• Is there a way to ‘join’ (block) in POSIX threads, without exiting the joinee?

  I’m buried in multithreading / parallelism documents, trying to figure out how to implement a threading implementation in a programming language I’ve been designing. I’m trying to map a mental model to the pthreads.h library, but I’m having trouble with one thing: I need my interpreter instances to continue to exist after they complete interpretation of a routine (the language’s closure/function data type), because I want to later assign other routines to them for interpretation, thus saving me the thread and interpreter setup/teardown time. This would be fine, except that pthread_join(3) requires that I call pthread_exit(3) to ‘unblock’ the original thread. How can I block the original thread (when it needs the result of executing the routine), and then unblock it when interpretation of the child routine is complete?

When a delegate is set, auto complete just stops working. • jQuery: Dynamic image handling (waiting for load)

  I'm trying to write a plugin that has a built in function to wait until all images that are on the page to be loaded before it executes itself. $(window).load() only works if it's the initial load of the page, but if someone wants to pull down some HTML through AJAX that contains images, it doesn't work. Is there any good way of doing this AND implementing it so that it can be self-contained in the plug-in? I've tried looping over $('img').complete, and I know that doesn't work (the images never load, and the browser crashes under a "script takes too long to complete" bug). For an example of what I'm trying to do, visit the page I'm looking to house the plugin at: http://www.simplesli.de If you go to the "more uses" section (click it on the nav bar), you'll see that the image slideshow won't load properly. I know the current code doesn't work, but it's just holding place until I figure something out.

  I used the auto-complete function in jquery. It's data source are the results from a php-back-end. $("#ice_id").autocomplete("ice-ver.php", { extraParams : { flavour_id: $("#flavour_id").val() } }); Let us take following example: We type in the flavour ID 3992 ...(and 3992 exists in the database and is properly returned by the php backend). If we type in now 3992999 the auto-complete function should top showing anything up ...but unfortunately it still does, (could the problem lie within the fact that I am using integers instead of strings or chars?)   UPDATE (3/8/2010) I installed Xdebug and have it tracing my code. I have installed everything the same way on a local server and it works fine. To say I am at a complete loss would be putting it lightly. *NOTE: I ran make test and it returned FAIL on every test. I never ran this on my working machine to see if it reports the same errors. Any idea why make test would report FAIL but make doesn't report any error? I've installed the Oracle Instantclient with no reported errors along with the OCI8 PECL package and at a loss. Whenever I try to open a connection with oci_connect, it halts my entire PHP script. EXAMPLE: <?php ini_set ("display_errors", "1"); error_reporting(E_ALL); echo "before"; $conn = oci_connect("username", "password", "host"); echo "after"; ?> Returns a complete blank page.   We are developing some stress and strain analysis software at university. Now it's time to move from rectangles and boxes and spheres to some real models. But I still have little idea where to start. In our software we are going to build mesh and then make calculations, but how do I import solid bodies from CAD/CAE software? 1) How CAD/CAE models are organised? How solid bodies are represented? What are the possibilities of DWG, DXF, IGES, STEP formats? There is e.g. a complete DXF reference, but it's too difficult for me to understand without knowing basic concepts. 2) Are there C++ libraries to import solid bodies from CAD/CAE file formats? Won't it be too difficult to build a complete model to be able to import comprehensive file?

  Hi, I'm trying to learn some aspects of the CH ( chomsky hierarchy ) which are related to PL ( programming languages ), and i still have to read the Dragon Book. I've read that most of the PL can be parsed as CFG ( context free grammar ). In term of computational power, it equals the one of a pushdown non deterministic automaton. Am I right ? If it's true, then how could a CFG holds a UG ( unrestricted grammar, which is turing complete ) ? I'm asking because, even if PL are CFG they are actually used to describe TM (turing machines ) and through UG. I think that's because of at least two different levels of computing, the first, which is the parsing of a CFG focuses on the syntax related to the structure ( representation ? ) of the language, while the other focuses on the semantic ( sense, interpretation of the data itself ? ) related to the capabilities of the pl which is turing complete. Again, are these assumptions rights ? thanx a lot.

  When I call a function, a local scope is erected for that call. Is there any way to directly reference that scope as an object? Just like window is a reference for the global scope object. Example: function test(foo){ var bar=1 //Now, can I access the object containing foo, bar, arguments and anything //else within the local scope like this: magicIdentifier.bar } Alternately, does anyone have a complete list of what is in the global scope on top of custom variables? Background: I'm trying to get down to a way of completely shifting to global scope from within a function call, the with statement is a joke, call works a little better, but it still breaks for anything declared in function scope but not in global scope, therefore I would declare these few cases in global scope, but that requires me to know what they are. The IE function execScript makes a complete shift, but that only solves the problem for IE. Note: To anyone loading JavaScript dynamically, setTimeout(code,1) is a simple effective hack to achieve global scope, but it will not execute immediately.

  Recently, I began reading about agile methodologies and XP in particular. I am a bit confused, though, about what are considered the practices involved in extreme programming. More precisely: Wikipedia reports 12 practices, which I someway believe to be the "classic" ones. Both Kent Beck and Ron Jeffries indicate 13 practices (you can find the links at the bottom of wikipedia page about "Extreme Programming Practices", I cannot post them here since I am new user of Stack Overflow), while this review of Kent Beck's "XP explained" (2nd edition) report more than 20 somewhat different practices. As a complete beginner in the topic (and basically as a complete beginner as a programmer), I would like to be enlightened on the matter. My impression is that I should look at Beck's book, since the second edition has been written after several years of XPerience, but I can find a lot less material based on that.

  I'd like to be able to write Inquisit scripts in Vim. In the standard Inquisit application for writing scripts, I can press F1 and it brings up help on the topic related to the word under the cursor. I'd like to set up the same functionality through Vim. The help file for Inquisit is stored in a Windows .CHM file. I figured there must be a set of command-line options for doing a keyword search in a chm file, but I haven't been able to find a complete list of the command-line options, presumably for HH.exe. I did find this page with a few pointers, but it does not have a full listing of command-line options. I also found this discussion on AutoHotKey discussion board. It mentions keyhh. I also just found a vimscript designed to do exactly what I want Questions: Is there a complete list of command-line options for HH.exe? Is there a better way of going about what I am trying to do?

  Hi Google Chrome version (8.0.552.224 (Official Build 68599)) I have developed a web site using asp.net mvc and jquery. it uses a lot of ajax. I noticed that occasionally a web page does not complete loading all files from the server. Browsing through forums It seems that this also happens to other people. Looking in to the Chromium Net-Internals ( type: chrome://net-internals/ as a url in the chrome browser ) I noticed that the pages do not complete loading if a NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED event occurred. Any files that were not fetched from the server before the time of the NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED event failed to arrive with error (-3) Do you know why the NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED event occurs? • What is the need of functional programming?

  I have read about functional programming which is stateless, gives the same result invocation after invocation, about closures and other related concepts. I still feel that I have very little idea what these things are about. Thinking about this, right now, I feel complete in C, C++, and Java. Any programming problem and I start thinking in one of these languages. So, I never feel and understand the need for functional languages. A good starting point therefore would be to try to understand some things that are not possible in imperative languages but possible in functional languages. I feel unless I understand where exactly functional languages fit inside my already complete world of C, C++ and Java, I would never be able to appreciate and understand them. So, can somebody help me understand the real need for functional programming? Where exactly do they fit in?

  Hi, I've already found a good site to convert HTML character codes to their respective glyphs: http://www.public.asu.edu/~rjansen/glyph_encoding.html However, I need a bit more information. Does anyone know of a site like the one above that also provides information on what type of character code it is? Meaning, is it a special character? Is the glyph visible? Etc... So far I have found some tables with this information, but they aren't as complete as the resource above. I would really like to get my hands on a complete table. Thanks, -Ben

  I have a perl array of to-do tasks that looks like this: @todos = ( "1 (A) Complete online final @evm4700 t:2010-06-02", "3 Write thank-you t:2010-06-10", "4 (B) Clean t:2010-05-30", "5 Donate to LSF t:2010-06-02", "6 (A) t:2010-05-30 Pick up dry cleaning", "2 (C) Call Chris Johnson t:2010-06-01" ); That first number is the task's ID. If a task has ([A-Z]) next to, that defines the task's priority. What I want to do is sort the tasks array in a way that places the prioritized items first (and in order): @todos = ( "1 (A) Complete online final @evm4700 t:2010-06-02", "6 (A) t:2010-05-30 Pick up dry cleaning", "4 (B) Clean t:2010-05-30", "2 (C) Call Chris Johnson t:2010-06-01" "3 Write thank-you t:2010-06-10", "5 Donate to LSF t:2010-06-02", ); I cannot use a regular sort() because of those IDs next to the tasks, so I'm assuming that some sort of customized sorting subroutine is needed. • Terminate long running thread in thread pool that was created using QueueUserWorkItem(win 32/nt5).

  I am programming in a win32 nt5 environment. I have a function that is going to be called many times. Each call is atomic. I would like to use QueueUserWorkItem to take advantage of multicore processors. The problem I am having is I only want to give the function 3 seconds to complete. If it has not completed in 3 seconds I want to terminate the thread. Currently I am doing something like this: HANDLE newThreadFuncCall= CreateThread(NULL,0,funcCall,&func_params,0,NULL); DWORD result = WaitForSingleObject(newThreadFuncCall, 3000); if(result == WAIT_TIMEOUT) { TerminateThread(newThreadFuncCall,WAIT_TIMEOUT); } I just spawn a single thread and wait for 3 seconds or it to complete. Is there anyway to do something similar to but using QueueUserWorkItem to queue up the work? Thanks!
