  • Print from Linux to Windows networked printer

    I want to print from a Debian (Lenny) workstation to a Windows networked printer. I'm not even sure what type of Windows network this is. Our tech-support is friendly but doesn't want to get involved with supporting Linux. I need to use it for a variety of reasons and am completely stumped because I know nothing about Windows networking. They gave me URI smb://msprint.ourorg.edu as the "address" of the printer and further confirmed that the domain is "OURORG" and the share is "PHYS-PRI". I've installed CUPS and made sure that it's running as a daemon, I've clicked on the system-config-printer[1] icon, selected the printer as a Windows printer shared via SAMBA and entered the above URI. Attempting to print a testpage just sees it sit in the queue. I attempted to see if I could access the share using two other methods. Method 1. First I tried the "smbclient" from the CLI: $ smbclient -L //msprint.ourorg.edu -U user23 timeout connecting to 192.168.44.3:445 timeout connecting to 192.168.44.3:139 Connection to msprint.ourorg.edu failed (Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED) Method 2. I tried to use the GUI tool Smb4K. This shows me four other toplevel (I'm assuming they're domains?) groupings one of which is the one which our IT department supplied to me. Clicking them shows a bunch of other machines with (what I assume are NetBIOS names?) including my own. I see all sorts of other networked printers belonging to other departments but none within mine. Certainly not the PHYS-PRI one suggested to me by the IT folks. I realize that I'm probably using the wrong terminology for the windows network, but can anyone help me with this? What steps should I be taking in debugging this? Do I need to actually run my machine as a SAMBA server to authenticate to the printer or should I just be able to communicate using CUPS?   • Can't print elements in a DIV tag

    I am using a Drag-able and re-sizeable DIV's in this HTML file. Where the user will place the DIV tag to his desired place in a main parent DIV tag. Now I want to print this main DIV tag, but the problem is that the code which I'm using to PRINT this main DIV is printing in a sequence, like not the way user has arranged the DIV's. Also it doesn't take up the main DIV background IMAGE. here is the code. When I restart Xorg everything is fine again and the problem doesn't occur until next reboot. I tried to upgrade the kernel from stock 2.6.32 to 2.6.39 from unstable repository but that didn't help. Booting with irqpoll option only seems to prolong the initial time period after which the problem occurs. I'm using latest NVIDIA drivers and Realtek firmware from firmware-realtek package. I have two GTX 560Ti that run in SLI. Disabling SLI or taking out one card completely doesn't solve the problem either.     I'm using Windows 7 64bit (RTM version). I bought myself a new Brother MFC6490CW but I'm having troubles with installing the drivers.   • Error when connecting to shared Windows Printers

    I'm replacing our Windows 2003 print server with one running on Windows 2008 R2. I have connected and configured all of our printers and can successfully print to them from the server itself. All of the printers are shared and user's have permission to print on all of them. Whenever one of our clients attempts to connect through the shares they receive the following error message: Operation could not be completed (error 0x0000709). Double check the printer name and make sure that the printer is connected to the network. No messages are generated on the client Event Log nor is anything generated on the server. I have reinstalled the drivers as suggested by a few forum posts I came across and it didn't solve the issue. There are twelve different printer drivers and they are all experiencing this issue so I believe it is unrelated to the driver. I have disabled UAC on both the client and server since that has caused so many headaches before, but it too did not solve this problem. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this?

  • Sharp flat panel scaling with Nvidia drivers

    I have a Samsung 226BW flat panel with a 1680x1050 native resolution. As my PC is rather dated (Athlon XP 2600+ and GeForce 6600 GT), I need to run more recent games (but still old) on a lower resolution. Unfortunately, scaling low resolutions to 1680x1050 results in a very blurry image (bilinear scaling). I have created a custom resolution of 840x525 in the Nvidia control panel. Technically, this resolutions allows perfect upscaling to 1680x1050 without the need for bilinear interpolation. Unfortunately, the Nvidia driver always seems to do bilinear scaling, again resulting in a blurry image. However, I seem to remember that I did obtain crisp images using this resolution in the past (before a Windows re-install). Maybe only some driver versions support integer upscaling without bilinear filtering? Or perhaps there are other solutions?

If NTFS has been successfully reverse engineered to a useful degree, then why is the kernel driver still only read-only, with write support being very dangerous.....just as it was 5 years agi?

    In PowerPoint (2007), it is possible to print multiple slides on a paper as a handout. However, there is quite a lot of whitespace in between them and around them. Is there another way to enlarge the slides (I'm using the "6 per page" option)? And I don't mean "Adjust to paper size" (or whatever that's called in English), because the difference is just minimal.

    I have installed Windows XP on my machine (Company CQ5020NL). Before I was able to do that, I set the SATA controller to IDE in the bios. Now I want to install Windows 7 upgrade. The DVD boots into the installation setup, but when I click "Install now" and am asked to load "A required CD/DVD drive device". When I click "Browse" I can browse the installation dvd and the drive I want to install to. I have tried all the SATA options in the bios already. I have no idea what to do... can anybody help me out?

    When I try to print a web page in either IE or Firefox - it just crashes? Any ideas? Printer works with other applications fine - like Word etc. It's only browser related for some strange reason. I am running XP SP3 - the printer is a Canon Laser Shot LBP 1120
