• Document/Scripts management for R code

  Hi useRs, I am looking for a solution that allows me to keep a track of a multitude of R scripts that I create for various projects and purposes. Some scripts are easily tracked to specific projects, whereas others are "convenience" functions created to serve a set of tasks. Is there a way I can create a central DB and query it to find which scripts match most appropriately? I could create a system using a DBMS manually, but are users aware of anything in general or specific to R, that comes in the form of a software tool (maybe FOSS) ?

• Is there a way to show a 3-D surface plot in the browser?

  I've got a bunch of data for 3-D surface plots. I want to build a quick web interface to let me browse through that data. Are there any (free) packages out there that can easily show surface plots? I found this question but the suggested libraries did not support surface plots. If it requires a plugin like flash / java that is fine. This is for prototyping so a quick 'n dirty solution is preferred. Right now, the only option I have come up with is to use gnuplot to serve up static images. It would be awesome if there was some way to provide an interactive 3-D surface plot in the browser.

• What elegant method callback design should be used ?

  Hi, I'm surprised this question wasn't asked before on SO (well, at least I couldn't find it). Have you ever designed a method-callback pattern (something like a "pointer" to a class method) in C++ and, if so, how did you do it ? I know a method is just a regular function with some hidden this parameter to serve as a context and I have a pretty simple design in mind. However, since things are often more complex than they seem to, I wonder how our C++ gurus would implement this, preferably in an elegant and standard way. All suggestions are welcome !

• How to host a naked domain on a CDN?

  If I have a domain that I wish to serve "naked" eg http://examp.le/, and efficiently with a CDN, what are my options? The issue is that the CDNs I looked at all want you to use a CNAME so that they can do geo ip lookup. CNAMES are not meant to be served at the same level as other records, and this apparently breaks some dns resolvers. You at least need SOA and MX records at the same level for a naked domain. The only solutions are: having A records in your own dns, thus skipping the geo ip, or finding a cdn who will allow delegation of the whole domain so they can do geo ip things for the A record directly. I've tried googling and can't find any Cdn who offers this. Any ideas? I looked closely at Amazon cloudfront and rackspace cloudfiles. I couldn't work it out for those.

• event vs thread programming on server side.

  We are planning to start a fairly complex web-portal which is expected to attract good local traffic and I've been told by my boss to consider/analyse node.js for the serve side. I think scalability and multi-core support can be handled with an Nginx or Cherokee up in the front. 1) Is this node.js ready for some serious/big business? 2) Does this 'event/asynchronous' paradigm on server side has the potential to support the heavy traffic and data operation ? considering the fact that 'everything' is being processed in a single thread and all the live connections would be lost if it got crashed (though its easy to restart). 3) What are the advantages of event based programming compared to thread based style ? or vice-versa. (I know of higher cost associated with thread switching but hardware can be squeezed with event model.) • Where should common static resources (images, js, css, etc) go in DotNetNuke?

  Is there a recommended location to store static resources (images, css, js, etc) in a DotNetNuke 5.x installation? There are /images and /js folders as well as a /Resources folder that contains resources. There appears to be some overlap as MicrosoftAjax.js is in multiple locations (but might be different versions?). I also could put resources in a /DesktopModule/ModuleX location. Does anyone know if there is a difference in using any of these folders? I kinda like the idea of all static resources being under a common folder (/Resources) so I could set caching rule headers, permissions, etc on them in one place. • Interview Programming Questions - In house Exam

  I have a company that would like to bring me in to serve me an hour long exam. No resources other than a pencil and paper. I really couldn't get any sort of feedback on the type of exam (implementation or generic) beside that it would test a few specific areas. Have you done anything like this? What sort of questions did they ask? What's a good way to prepare? I'll probably go in a couple weeks before school starts back up. A time sensitive exam structure is a weak point for me, so what should I absolutely focus down on? If they like the exam, that's when I'll get a face-to-face meeting. • Configure Symfony for use with Memcached

  I have 2 Symfony applications (1 using 1.2.x, another using 1.4.x and both using Propel) that need to share some specific session information. Although I have no experience with memcached, my sense--after some reading--is that it may be able to serve as an external (FAST) repository that each app could read and write to. Unfortunately, I can't find much information about how to use it with Symfony in any capacity, much less in the quasi-cache, quasi-messaging server I'm envisioning. My questions, I suppose, are: Am I mistaken in believing that memcached be used in this manner and access by multiple systems? How can I configure Symfony to access a memcached repository? Thanks.

• Integer v/s int

  Read this on the oracle docs java.lang page: Frequently it is necessary to represent a value of primitive type as if it were an object. The wrapper classes Boolean, Character, Integer, Long, Float, and Double serve this purpose. I'm not sure I understand why these are needed. It says they have useful functions such as equals(). But if I can do (a==b), why would I ever want to declare them as Integer, use more memory and use equals()? How does the memory usage differ for the 2?

• What's the deal with char.GetNumericValue?

  I was working on Project Euler 40, and was a bit bothered that there was no int.Parse(char). Not a big deal, but I did some asking around and someone suggested char.GetNumericValue. GetNumericValue seems like a very odd method to me: Takes in a char as a parameter and returns...a double? Returns -1.0 if the char is not '0' through '9' So what's the reasoning behind this method, and what purpose does returning a double serve? I even fired up Reflector and looked at InternalGetNumericValue, but it's just like watching Lost: every answer just leads to another question.

• Flash Media Server dynamic file naming

  I'm trying to figure out most efficient/safe way to name recorded streams on FMS. The case is to get listing of recorded streams from the server (eg. rec_001, rec_002...) and dynamically add rec_003 filename to the new stream that is being recorded. I'm thinking about either using FMS File Object and put everything in array of files every time I start recording procedure or to create XML file that would serve as a database of file names. I'm searching for a solution efficient for MULTIPLE connections at a time and large amount of files. Which one of presented would be the best for this purpose? Or do you have any better suggestions of solving this problem?

• PHP speed optimisation.

  Hi, Im wondering about speed optimization in PHP. I have a series of files that are requested every page load. On average there are 20 files. Each file must be read an parsed if they have changed. And this is excluding that standard files required for a web page (HTML, CSS, images, etc). EG - client requests page - server outputs html, css, images - server outputs dynamic content (20+/- files combined and minified). What would be the best way to serve these files as fast as possible?

• is it possible to write data to a collection in wpf?

  Hello. In looking through samples I have seen a number of examples where it is possible to present data within a wpf applicaiton by binding to collections. However I was wondering is it possible to write to a collection from an applicaiton. Say for example i have 2 or more fields such as names and I wanted to have hte ability to add up to three names in my application ( all stored in memory). Will collections serve this purpose. In the past with asp.net I have done this by creating data tables and storing values on the fly or during the session. I am trying to learn WPF and I was wondering if collections work in the same fashion? If so could you please post an example or point me to references that show examples of this? • How to find root cause for "too many connections" error in MySQL/PHP

  I'm running a web service which runs algorithms that serve millions of calls daily and run some background processing as well. Every now and than I see "Too many connections" error in attempts to connect to the MySQL box" for a few seconds. However this is not necessarily attributed to high traffic times or anything I can put my finger on. I want to find the bottleneck causing it. Other than in the specific times this happens the server isn't too loaded in terms of CPU and Memory, and has 2-3 connections (threads) open and everything works smoothly. (I use Zabbix for monitoring) Any creative ideas on how to trace it?

• Check something before django server starts

  I am running my api behind a django server and say I have a one time token that is needed by the django application and used through out its existence until the process quits. To check if I can proceed and serve requests (using the django server) I need to validate this token against a database entry. Now, I can have a script that hits the db, then issues the run server command if the token is valid. But if the db used by the django applications change, I will have to change the script also to point to the same db. Is there a way I can pass this token into the runserver command as an additional parameter (along with hostname:port) and validate this before django serves any requests? How can I access this parameter that is sent into ./manage.py runserver. Thanks.

  Hi, I am trying to figure out what exactly is Appdomain recycling? When a aspx page is requested for the first time from a DotNet application, i understand that an appdomain for that app is created, and required assemblies are loaded into that appdomain, and the request will be served. Now, if the web.config file or the contents of the bin folder, etc are modified, the appdomain will be "recycled". My question is, at the end of the recycling process, will the appdomain be loaded with assemblies and ready to serve the next request? or a page has to be requested to trigger the assemblies to load?.

  I occasionally hear things about how SQL sucks and it's not a good language, but I never really hear much about alternatives to it. So, are other good languages that serve the same purpose (database access) and what makes them better than SQL? Are there any good databases that use this alternative language? EDIT: I'm familiar with SQL and use it all the time. I don't have a problem with it, I'm just interested in any alternatives that might exist, and why people like them better. I'm also not looking for alternative kinds of databases (the NoSQL movement), just different ways of accessing databases.

• Rails: How can I log all requests which take more than 4s to execute?

  I have a web app hosted in a cloud environment which can be expanded to multiple web-nodes to serve higher load. What I need to do is to catch this situation when we get more and more HTTP requests (assets are stored remotely). How can I do that? The problem I see from this point of view is that if we have more requests than mongrel cluster can handle then the queue will grow. And in our Rails app we can only count only after mongrel will receive the request from balancer.. Any recommendations?

• Ideal way/architecture to deliver large data over Web Services

  We are trying to design 6 web services, which will serve another client component. The client component requires data from the web service we are implementing. Now, the problem is, there is not 1 WS we are implementing, there is one WS which the client component hits, this initiates a series (5 more) of WSs which gather data from their respective data stores and finally provide the data back to the original WS, which then delivers the data back to the client component. So, if the requested data becomes huge, then, this will be a serious problem for our internal communication channel. So, what do you guys suggest? What can be done to avoid overloading of the communication channel between the internal WS and at the same time, also delivering the data to the client component.

  The framework I'm using on my project follows the MVC Pattern. I"M building JSON feeds and need to structure them in a different way then what the system gives me by default from the ORM. Where should I be handling the task of mangling and shaping my data that I'll serve up, in the model, view or controller? Right now I'm doing it in my controller, then passing that data to the view. I can see this fitting better under the Model or the View but not sure which one.

I have say a few thousand text documents and I want to create a web based system to serve them up to users in a OS X application. It's just a tiny aside for my family's small business, so it doesn't need to be amazing at the moment, we just want to see if we can can anyone to use it. I can't believe it can be that hard to do this? -Some sort of SQL backend database to manage permissions for users? -Download through the application? -For the moment just want to view the raw text files. -If we want people to pay, how would we go about incorporating that? • How to represent datetime of different time zomes in C#

  I have a .NET WebService (written in C#), that is supposed to serve people around the world. With each request I get the user's datetime in his own time zone with the format : yyyy/MM/dd HH:mm ZZZZ. I have to convert the string to something representing the original date and time and specifying the time zone in GMT. I have to make some logical calculations and keep it in the database. The regular DateTime doe's not support this. it does not have a property specifying the time zone. When I try to convert my string into DateTime - it simply converts it to my local time. I do not want to keep my time in UTC, because I have some logic that has to run per user by his own time. Does anyone know a C# class that handles this?

• How to create custom CSS "on the fly" based on account settings in a Django site?

  So I'm writing a Django based website that allows users select a color scheme through an administration interface. I already have middleware/context processors that links the current request (based on domain) to the account. My question is how to dynamically serve the CSS with the account's custom color scheme. I see two options: Add a CSS block to the base template that overrides the styles w/variables passed in through a context processors. Use a custom URL (e.g. "/static/dynamic/css//styles.css") that gets routed to a view that grabs all the necessary values and creates the css file. I'm content with either option, but was wondering if anyone else out there has dealt with similar problems and could give some insight as to "Best Practices".

• Content cacheing with PHP and CodeIgniter

  I have a couple of things I'm working on, namely a page that issues five or six cURL requests and processing content on them. I'm working with CodeIgniter on a LAMP stack but am open to other options. Naturally I would prefer to not rewrite the application. I would like to know if there are any ready-made / easily learned caching methods. Primarily I'd like to check if the page has changed since I last scrapped it. If it has, redownload and present. If it hasn't, serve up a cached copy.

• HTML5 video element non-seekable when using Django development server

  Hey everyone. I've got a Django app serving a webpage with an HTML5 element. There's a wierd "feature", turning the video element to be non-seekable: video.seekable returns a timeRanges object with length=0, whereas it should be length=1. This means I can't edit the video. JavaScript can't do anything either. The thing is, when I upload the problematic webpage, statically - no Django, just plain HTML/JS/CSS - to my website for testing, it works fine - length=1. However, if I try to serve the same static page on my Django dev server still gives the same problem. I am using Django's static serving for dev/debug purposes - Do you have any idea what is causing this, or how can I fix it? Thanks.
