  • Windows 7 UAC elevation

    I have a single thread that I'd like to run as an administrator in my application. The rest of the application I can happily run as the default user level (asInvoker). Is this possible? I notice there is an "ImpersonateLoggedOnUser" function. Can I somehow use this to log the administrator on and then get the thread to impersonate that person? It seems as though this ought to be something pretty trivial to do ... but there doesn't appear to be any obvious way to do it. Can anyone help me out?

    I'm trying to get to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameUX\, but the only subkey being returned in C# is MachineSettings - even though there are additional subkeys, including Games and several keys named for different user SIDs. How can I access these other keys? Even a standard user account can read the content of both Games and that account's own SID (when looking in regedit)...

  • Routing for remote gateway over VPN in Vista/7 broken?

    Hi, Situation is as follows. Home computer running Windows 7, sets up VPN connection (LT2P + IPSec, "use remote gateway" disabled) to office. Subnet is 192.168.64.x Office has Draytek Vigor 2920 router, subnet is 192.168.32.x What happens? - VPN connection itself works fine - Can ping any machine on the remote network - When trying to open a webpage from a host in the remote network, the remote server logs the incoming request, but the browser hangs on "waiting for..." and eventually times out. I have observed this problem on Windows Vista and Windows 7. On Windows XP however there is no problem like described above. The only clue I have is that there is a difference in the routing between XP and Vista/7. The output of "route print" on Windows XP looks like this: (See www.latunyi.com/routing_xp.png) So here the gateway for the 192.168.32.x subnet is the IP address that the local computer has in the remote network. The output of "route print" on Windows 7 (and Windows Vista) looks like this: (See www.latunyi.com/routing_win7.png") Now the gateway for the 192.168.32.x subnet is the IP address of the VPN router (32.1). I don't know if that causes this trouble, but it seems a bit strange. Enabling "use default gateway on remote network" doesn't make a difference. Using the new option "Disable class based route addition" in Windows 7 only makes the route to the VPN router disappear. I am really puzzled here. I assume the VPN routing can't be broken in both Vista and Windows 7, and this should just work without manually adding routes. I hope someone has a solution for this problem :-). Thanks!

  • How to make a Windows Vista boot / recovery cd from a running system without using an original CD / DVD

    I have just repaired a friends computer (replaced motherboard) and now I am trying to repair the Windows (Windows Vista) partitions. Unfortunately, probably due to the fact that he tried to start it several times after the old motherboard had stopped working (no signal on video) now the partition table or the file systems (or both?) appear to be damaged. I managed to boot Windows a couple of times but could not complete the boot. I tried to repair the partition table and file systems using Linux RIP (booting from USB stick) but the Linux utilities say that the file system is damaged and I should run chkdsk /f from Windows. So I now need a Windows boot CD from which I can boot and run chkdsk or any other Windows utilities that can repair the file system. Is there an easy way to create such a CD? Or can I download it for free somewhere? All the links to Windows Vista boot / repair CD's I have found on the internet refer to non-free stuff. Any hint? EDIT I have a working laptop with Windows Vista installed. So one solution would be to make a bootable CD or USB from it so that I can boot the desktop and run the repair utilities. However, I do not have the Windows Vista installation DVD, because both computers were bought with Windows pre-installed.

  • Why am I having so many problems installing Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Vista?

    I am trying to setup my laptop to dual boot Ubuntu 13.10 and Windows Vista. I get as far as the drive table and it either freezes up or I get an error saying "unable to satisfy partition parameters" or something very similar. Now I just have a black screen with alternating indications that a request for cache data failed and something to do with a "write through". Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

    This has probably been asked before, but I want to be 100% sure before buying: if I have a laptop with an OEM version of Windows Vista Home Premium installed, can I buy the Windows 7 professional upgrade and install it ? I don't care whether it will be an actual upgrade or a clean install (that would actually be even better), what I'm curious is whether this is actually legal (going from home to professional). And if this is possible, how does it work ? Do I have to have Vista installed when upgrading so that the installer can check that I actually do own a genuine copy or does it ask for the vista key (which I'm not sure I have, since it's an OEM version) ?

    I Installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a dell Inspiron 1501 with an AMD 64 along side windows vista using the windows installer but it wont boot into Ubuntu. It shows that Ubuntu is on the system when my computer boots up but when I select it to load it goes into a black screen and displays some error messages and tells me that the is no operating system installed. this is the error that i get: Try (hdo, 0):FAT16:no WUBILDR try (hdo, 1)NTFS: error: "Prefix" is not set. symbol not found:'grub_file_get_device_name' Aborted.     What happened I decided to install Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit side by side with Vista Home Premium (I guess on another partition) with a USB stick. I found instructions on how to do this here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick To create the bootable USB drive I had to download a program called Unetbootin. That process was simple enough. All I had to do was just choose the disk image option, select the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso image, make sure it recognizes my USB drive and then press OK. It takes only like a few minutes to create a working bootable USB drive. Then I have to restart my computer, enter the BIOS, select my USB drive as the first boot drive, save options and continue with booting up. After this Ubuntu actually loads up. I think this is known as the Live version of Ubuntu so you can try it out before fully installing it. Any ways, on the Ubuntu 10.04 desktop I saw an installer. I click it and begin the installation process. Just so you know, I tried installing it 2 times. I will explain what happened each time: The first time I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 I got stuck at step 4 of 7. I remember selecting the last option in the window which was Specify Partitions Manually (Advanced) I made my partition for Ubuntu like 52 gigs. I clicked forward and a little pop up window appeared saying Please Wait. So the installation process stalled on this window so I closed out of it and quit the installation process. So at this point I was worried because I had already selected the partition size and assumed it started making it. Since it stalled I had to quit out though. Anyways, once again I reached step 4 of 7 a decided to select the first option which is Install them side by side choosing between them each startup. I figured this was the safe way to go. I did that and the pop up window saying Please Wait popped up again but lasted only like 10 seconds. Then I got to I guess step 6 where it asks you to enter your desired name and password. Did that and clicked forward. The Ubuntu 10.04 installation load screen appeared and the loading bar at the bottom started filling up. So I got to 83% and stalled during the Importing other profile information (I think it was called this. I had the option to do this during I think step 6) process. So at this point I decided to get stop the installation process. I was getting very nervous. I tried to restart the computer but all that happened was that Ubuntu restarted. I finally got the computer to restart. I was pretty sure I had screwed something up big time by this point. As my computer was restarting I entered BIOS again and switched back to it booting from my main hard drive containing Vista. Saved it and continued the boot process. My worst fears were confirmed as Vista would not boot up. I mean I saw the little Microsoft Windows choppy animated green loading bar at the bottom of the screen and then boom! It decided to restart. When it restarted I had the option to run a memory test check to see if there was anything that needed to be repaired. That took like 20 minutes and at the end I saw that I did indeed have to repair something. I had to go through 2 repair processes. After each I had to restart the computer. The 2nd time it went through the repair process it said that it could not fully repair the damage. I was scared and restarted but Vista did load up. I got to my desktop and saw a message saying something like Repairs have been made, Please restart for changes to take effect I noticed that some Notification icons were missing and I could not hear volume in a video. Things were a bit funky. So I did restart and here I am. Now what?! So since I got back into Vista and thankfully have a working Internet connection I am trying to find answers to my problem (that is why I am writing this post). I am scared that I have partioned my hard drive 2 times after researching Installing Ubuntu 10.04 and seeing this post http://techie-buzz.com/foss/ubuntu-10-04-lts-installation-guide.html The author shows screen shots of installing Ubuntu 10.04. He shows the image of step 4 of 7 with a caption at the bottom. I will recreate it below: Select a partitioning option. Unless you want to format all the hard drive and install Ubuntu afresh, select the last option and proceed. Questions If I have indeed partitioned my HD 2 times (which I am sure it is), how do I get to a point where I can see all my bad, unfinished Ubuntu partitions and get rid of them? How do I clean this big mess up? & How can I ensure that this mess will not happen next time I try installing Ubuntu 10.04? Thank you Adam

    This has always been a bothersome matter for me. Some devices (printers, scanners, etc.) have drivers for older versions of Windows (Vista, XP, 2000, NT) but no driver for Windows 7. What are my chances to install such devices on Windows 7? Example case: I have a Sharp printer & scanner (Sharp AR-122E N) which I have used for my old Windows XP based PC. Now I want to install it on a Windows 7 x64 based PC. Windows 7 cannot load its driver. I used the original driver CD but when I run the setup.exe (which is included in AR122EN111.exe, 6713KB), it says Cannot install driver on this operating system. Supported operating systems are: Windows 2000, XP, Vista. I tried to install the driver using compatibility settings. I tried Windows Vista and Windows XP SP3, but to no avail. The setup gave the same error. I also googled for Windows 7 driver for "Sharp AR-122E N" but it only listed the original driver that I tried. The official site of Sharp does not even list the driver for this product. In the past, the compatibility setting workaround did work for some devices, but this time it failed. What else can I do to overcome this problem?

    I think this mostly happens when trying to open files opened by other users. In the XP/2003 days you would get some kind of warning about a locked/read only file. With 7/Vista/2008 I'm just seeing clients hang (Word just sits there) and if I go into the file share and attempt to right-click on the file, explorer hangs for several minutes. I tried disabling AV on the file server as well as locally. No luck. I've read that SMB2.0 might be the culprit here, but even testing that solution means disabling it on both the client and server, and requires a server reboot. Does this sound like an SMB2 issue? The server is 2008 SP1. The clients are Win7 vanilla and Vista SP2 with all the current updates. Office 2007 SP2 with all updates. Thanks.

I need a service where I could rent a Virtual OS in the cloud and connect via Remote Dektop. Use for couple of hours and then discard all the stuff I have been doing there. I tried using Amazon S3 but they only have Windows Server 2003 Anyone knows of such a service that would offer different XP/Vista/7 versions ?

    I've been working to set up a Windows Vista Media Center and I noticed that when I play certain DVDs, the video is scrambled. After watching this video, I think it is because Windows Vista considers Component Cables to be untrusted and therefore scrambles the video. The video says that VGA is a trusted video type, but I was curious of which other types are trusted? If I were to use a DVI to HDMI cable, would that be trusted? Edit: Scrambled as in: The video looks like a rainbow checkerboard. The audio plays as expected. I'm using component cables for the connection to my TV.

    Looking for your recommendations for a free temperature-monitoring utility, for my PC (Core 2) and graphics card for Vista. (Question reposted with the hyperlinks now I have 10 reputation). I don't want all the geeky details, I don't overclock, I don't see the need to mess with my fan speeds or motherboard settings, I just want something fairly basic to help with basic troubleshooting of intermittent overheats on video card and/or mobo: must run on Windows Vista (yes, don't laugh). ideally displays temperature when minimized to toolbar, and/or: automatically alerts me when temperature on either core or the video card exceeds a threshold ideally measures temperature of video card and system as well, not just the cores. HDD temperature is not necessary I think. logging is nice, graphs are also nice portability to Linux and Mac is nice Apparently Everest is the best paid option, but I'm not prepared to spend $40. I found the following free options, but no head-to-head at-a-glance comparison: CoreTemp (only does cores, not video card?) Open Hardware Monitor (nice graphs, displays when minimized to toolbar, no alerts) RealTemp (has alerts, works minimized, lightweight install) HWMonitor (no alerts, CNET: "[free version is] simple but effective") from CPUID CPUCool (not free: 21-day trialware, then $18) SpeedFan from Almico (too geeky, detail overload; CNET: "most users won't be able to make head or tail of the data this utility provides") Motherboard Monitor (CNET: not recommended, requires expert knowledge of your mobo, dangerous) Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (only does cores, not video card? has logging) Useful discussions I found: hardwarecanucks.com , superuser.com 1, 2 , forums.techarena.in (Update: I downloaded Real Temp 3.60 and it meets all my needs, the customizable alert temperature is great.     I have a C# program that works correctly on xp and vista but it needs to be used on windows 7, I have not been able to come up with a solution, it appears that getpixels just doesn't work right on windows 7. I am getting one of the RGB values because I am dealing with tiff grayscale images. System.Drawing.Bitmap image;// this is in a separate class image = new Bitmap(destination);// this is in the constructor Color t = image.GetPixel(j, i); // this is in a separate function int s = t.R when I print s, for example, image(0,0), it is supposed to be 220, it will be 221 I am doing edge detection on an image and I have to go through the image pixel by pixel, I have run the exact same program on XP,Vista,windows7 and windows 7 got different values. It wouldn't let me post images at all and only one link. The first image is the original image, the second is the correct image, also the one I get with XP and Vista, the final image is the image when running the same program in Windows 7. There is not much of a visible difference but it matters for what I am doing. Thanks for the help, it seems that I am having a hard time explaining my problem.
