  • Growing your VirtualBox Virtual Disk

    Don't you just hate it when this happens: Fortunately, if you're running inside VirtualBox, you can resize your virtual disk and magically make your guest have a bigger disk very easily. There are 2 steps to doing this... 1. Resize the virtual disk Use the VBoxManage command line tool to extend the size of the Virtual Disk, specifying the path to the disk and the size in MB: VBoxManage modifyhd <uuid>|<filename> [--type normal|writethrough|immutable|shareable| readonly|multiattach] [--autoreset on|off] [--compact] [--resize <megabytes>|--resizebyte <bytes>]   If you booted up your guest at this point, the extra space is seen as an unformatted area on the disk, like this: So we now need to tell the guest about the extra space available. 2. Extend the guest's partition to use the extra space How you do this step depends on you guest OS type and the tools you have available. Linux guests often include the excellent gparted partition editor, whereas Windows 7 and 8 provide the Computer Management tool which can resize partitions. Unfortunately, my Windows XP vm has no such tool. But I do have a couple of other options: Most Linux installable .isos include the aforementioned gparted tool, so I could simply attach, say, an Ubuntu.iso as a Virtual CD/DVD in my Windows XP vm and boot off that. Then use gparted to extend the Windows XP partition, before finally rebooting. But I took another route and attached my resized virtual disk to a Windows Server 2012 vm I had lying around. Then I used the Computer Management tool in Windows Server 2012 to extend the partition of the Windows XP disk, before shutting down, unplugging the disk and reattaching to my Windows XP vm. (Note that if your vm's use different disk controllers, Windows will check the disks on booting). When I finally boot up my Windows XP guest I see the available disk space and all is well.   • WPF/MVVM - keep ViewModels in application component or separate?

    Hi all, I have a WPF application where I'm using the MVVM pattern. I get the VM activated for actions that require user input and thus need to activate views from the VM. I've started out separating the VMs into a separate component/assembly, partly because I see them as the unit testable part, partly because views should rely on VM, not the other way round. But when I then need to bring up a window, the window is not known by the VM. All introductions I find place the VM in the WPF/App component, thus eliminating the problem.     At the end of November 2010 we released a new version of the Windows Azure SDK which contains many new features driven by the great feedback of early adopters plus a shiny new portal. New Portal implemented in Silverlight: The new portal is implemented using Silverlight and replaces the (IMHO rather clunky) original HTML + JavaScript portal.     I currently have two physical Ubuntu Server 10.10 servers at home: one serves as our firewall/router/DHCP/VPN server and the other performs double-duty as a file server and a VirtualBox host for an Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 machine which I use from remote connections (via NoMachine) for many thin-client purposes which are irrelevant to my question. What I'd like to accomplish is to consolidate the two physical machines into one which is a dedicated VirtualBox host (most likely running Ubuntu Server 10.10). Note that I'd like to stick with VirtualBox (if possible) because I'm most comfortable with it and use it on a daily basis at both home and work. Specifically, I plan to have one VM set up as file server, another as the firewall/router/DHCP/VPN (or possibly split those a bit) and a third, which is the only current VM (already VirtualBox), which is the thin-client host. My question comes down to performance and/or recommendations about the file server VM. The file server hosts about 6 terabytes of data across 4 drives. What I'd like to do is use raw disk access from the VM directly to the existing disks. However, I'm curious what performance advantage/disadvantage that would have as compared to using shared folders from the VM host and basically just have the whole drive served as a shared folder to the VM which would then serve it to the other machines on the network. I don't know if virtual disks would even work in this scenario and I certainly wouldn't want a drive to be filled with just a single file which is 1.5 TB (disk image). To add understanding of context, but not to get additional advice, I want to virtualize these machines because I intend to regularly use the snapshot capabilities of VirtualBox for the system disks (which will be virtual drives) of the VMs and I have some physical space/power needs to address (as I mentioned, this is at home).

  • Use one NIC to create multiple interfaces for Linux KVM

    I am working on a thesis research project, and I am having some difficulty figuring out how to make one NIC spawn several "bridge" interfaces such that each KVM VM can be seen on the local network. I am very new to KVM, and am still exploring what it can do. Below is the scenario that I am attempting to make (on a CentOS/RHEL 6 system): Linux KVM Host has 1 NIC (eth0) connected to a switch. Create multiple "bridge" or equivalent interfaces that are spawned off of eth0 that would provide a unique IP for each VM. This is so that each VM can communicate with other hosts on the network, and that other hosts on the network can communicate with the VM. IMPORTANT: I would like iptables on the KVM host to be able to manipulate/control/restrict the traffic that would be sent on those "bridge" interfaces. I would like to create a minimum of three VM's, each using their own unique "bridge" interfaces. I have previously made a br0 interface off of eth0, but unfortunately, I am unable to add any more to it. It appears that you can only bridge 1 interface to the NIC. I would like to bridge many to one. Would a tap device be able to do this? If so, how would it be set up? Effectively, I am attempting to replicate what can easily be created with VirtualBox on Windows, where each VM is given a "bridged" interface, and can live on the network. I want to achieve this very same thing with Linux KVM.   • tomcat start service NoClassDefFoundError?

    I am trying to redeploy my server on a new server with a different DNS and IP address. Therefore, I think my problem is in the configuration to find JAR files. Is there a way to get more detail as to which class is being requested so I can narrow down my problem. Does anyone have any suggested troubleshooting guidance for such problem? BTW - the configuration was working on the original server, and I tried to find all the locations in the files: conf/, worker.properties, server.xml, catalina.policy, web.xml. The jarkarta.log repeats the starting... error initializing ... forever. Very boring, therefore, the problem has to be fundamental.   • vmdk Recovery after migration from 3.5 to 4 and fallback tentative.

    Hy, I've tryed to migrate some VM from my 3.5i environment to a brand new vSphere 4.0 U1. The two platforms are running simultaneously, sharing the same SAN. I Migrate my VM by stopping it, unregistering in vcenter (esx ver. 3.5, i call it esx3), register in vSphere (esx ver. 4, i call it esx4), and migrate upgrade virtual hardware before powering it up (First mistake). vMotion was enabled on esx4, seem to be a second mistake. After a day or so, i encountred problems joigning the esx server (esx4) and decided to unregister my server for esx4 and fallback to esx3. esx3 refused to boot, i supposed this was due to virtual hardware in Version 7 so i recreated a new VM pointing to the vmdk of the old VM. Everithing seemed fine until i log into the server and discover that i was running on the original disk ith every snapshots ignored even those created on esx3. I tried to reboot VM on esx4 but VM doesn't power up because "The parent virtual disk has been modified since the child was created". I've got a copy of a later state of the drive but generated between two snapshots (ovf generated with canverter standalone) as a backup. Do i have a chance to recover at least some files on the virtual drive or (as i tink) all is played, i've done enought mistakes for this time. Thanks for your help.

  • How can I copy a VMware Fusion virtual machine to a FAT32 partition?

    I created the virtual machine on a host running OS X. I then moved the machine to a FAT32 partition on an external drive. It moved the first time without error. Then I moved it from the external drive to a host running Ubuntu 9.10. I had to move to a FAT32 partition first because Ubuntu doesn't recognize Mac OS Extended partitions on the drive. So, the virtual machine (vm) ran on the ubuntu host for a while and then I moved it back to the FAT32 partition and from there back to the OS X host. I worked on the vm for a while on the OS X host and then attempted to move it back to the FAT32 partition. I get the following system error: The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “my-virtual-machine” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36) Interestingly, I can move the file to another OS X partition, just not FAT32. I also perused VMware's forums and found advice to set permissions on all files and folders to 777. I did this, but have had no success. I notice the the files within the vm package are 777 now, but there is an extended attributes symbol on their permission details "rwxrwxrwx@" Since I can copy the vm between OS X partitions, but not to non OS X partitions, and all files and folders withing the vm package and the package itself have permissions of 777, I speculate that the "@" is the problem. How can I remove the "@" or is there something else I need to modify to allow me to copy/move the vm to other hosts?

  • How does VirtualBox's memory usage work?

    I've been running several VM's with VirtualBox, and the memory usage reported from various perspectives, and I'm having trouble figuring how much memory my VMs actually use. Here is an example: I have a VM running Windows 7 (as the Guest OS) on my windows XP Host machine. The Host Machine Has 3 GB of RAM The Guest VM is setup to have a base memory of 1 GB If I run Task Manger on the Guest OS, I see memory usage of 430 MB If I run Task Manger on the host OS, I see 3 processes that seem to belong to VirtualBox: VirtualBox.exe (1), using 60 MB of memory (This one seems to have the most CPU usage) VirtualBox.exe (2), using 20 MB of memory VBoxSvc.exe, using 11.5 MB of memory While running the VM, the Host OS's memory usage is about 2 GB When I shut down the VM, the Host OS's it goes back to memory usage goes down to about 900 MB So clearly, there are some huge differences here. I really don't understand how the GuestOS can use 400+ MB, while the Host OS only shows about 75 MB allocated to the VM. Are there other processes used by VirtualBox that aren't as obviously named? Also, I'd like to know if I run a machine with 1 GB, is that going to take 1 GB away from my host OS, or only the amount of memory the Guest machine is currently using? update Somene expressed distrust over my memory usage numbers, and I'm not sure if that distrust was directed at me, or my Host OS's Task Manager's reporting (which is perhaps the culprit), but for any skeptics, here is a screenshot of those processes on the host machine:

  • Memory Usage of SQL Server

    SQL Server instance on my server is using almost full memory available in my Physical Server. Say if i am having 8GB of RAM than SQL Server is using 7.8 GB of RAM from system. I also have read articles and also read many similar questions regarding same on this forum and i understand that memory is reserved and it is using memory. But i have 2 same servers and 2 SQL Servers, why this is happening on a single SQL Instance not on other. Also when i run DBCC MemoryStatus than it is showing up... VM Reserved 8282008 VM Committed 537936 so from this we know that SQL reserved whole 8GB memory, but why this VM Committed keeps increasing. What i understand is VM Committed is: VM Committed: This value shows the overall amount of VAS that SQL Server has committed. VAS that is committed has been associated with physical memory. So this is the memory SQL Server has committed (from this i understand that physical memory actually SQL Server is using at instance). So like to know the reason behind this ever increasing VM Committed memory on my server and not on another. Thanks in Advance.

  • Should an HA failover occur in this scenario?

    I'm running vSphere 5 in an HA cluster across two hosts (vsphereA and vsphereB). I have the HA cluster configured for host monitoring and datastore heartbeat monitoring with admission control disabled (hopefully I rightfully understand that datastore heartbeat monitoring prevents inadvertent and unwanted HA failovers due to management network isolation). Each host has a single connection to a dedicated iSCSI network and iSCSI target (no MPIO). All vmdk's for all VM's exist on the iSCSI datastore. As a test of HA I disconnected the iSCSI connection on vsphereB and was surprised to see that the running VM's on vsphereB continued to run on vsphereB. The powered off VM's were showing as inaccessible (which I expected due to the fact that they weren't running and the connection from vsphereB to the iSCSI target was severed) but the running VM's continued to run and continued to be "owned" by vsphereB. I expected to see an HA failover occur for those VM's and expected to see them "owned" by vsphereA after the HA failover (which didn't occur). I'm at a loss to understand why an HA failover didn't occur for those VM's. Am I misunderstanding in which cases an HA failover should occur?

  • Win 8.1 Hyper-v Full Screen and VPN problems

    I need to connect to my office using Cisco VPN software (RSA). Once connected all my internet traffic goes through the employer's VPN and this prevents me from listening to spotify. As a way around this I created a Win 2012 VM that I run in hyper-v from my Windows 8.1 Client. First I RDP to the VM, then I connect to the VPN. This forces the RDP session between my host laptop and the VM to close. I then open the hyper-v manager and double-click my VM to get a connection back (not great because I don't get the use of copy & paste this way). Previously when I opened my VM this way I would have full screen. I'm using a 1920x1080 monitor. Today when I re-open my connection to the VM it is displayed in a window that uses maybe 75% of the full screen. I have tried the menu option View\Full Screen Mode only centres the screen and apply black borders around the outside. Could anyone please suggest how I may solve the VPN or Full Screen problems?   • How can I get mouse capture to work in virtualbox when I move guest window to second monitor?

    I'm running VirtualBox on a Win7 host. Guest OS is Centos. My setup is a laptop (screen 1) with a huge external monitor (screen 2). I'm only telling Centos there is one monitor though. When I start up VirtualBox on screen 1, the mouse capture works fine. I don't have mouse integration because (I think) the kernel on Centos is too old to support it. That's fine, I don't mind doing the Right-Control thing. The problem I have is that when I drag the whole VM window over to my second monitor, the mouse capture doesn't work right anymore. I click inside the VM and can move the VM cursor a little bit, but I can't always get to the edges of the VM screen -- before I get all the way to an edge, the cursor will escape from the VM as if I had hit right-control. But it's still captured according to the icon, and if I then hit right-control, the guest cursor jumps to a different screen location. My workaround: if I have the VM window mostly on screen 2, but a small corner of it still on screen 1, then the mouse capture works correctly. Is there a setting to make this work better?

  • Run as another user, but also as administrator

    I am trying to debug a virtual machine (VM) running on a remote computer from my workstation (A). Both VM and A are running Windows 7 Enterprise. Apparently, I need to start the Remote Debugger Service (RDS) on VM as an administrator. Apparently, I also need to run RDS as the user Tewr logged in on A (domain: DOM). VM runs the services i need to debug, as well as the remote desktop interface with an account VMUSER in a domain called VMDOMAIN. I manage to start RDS as administrator, but then the RDS process is owned by VMUSER and that's not good enough. I also manage to run RDS as DOM\Tewr, but then not as an administrator. I have Added DOM\Tewr as an administrator on VM, but thats not good enough becuase the process is still not run as administrator. How can I run the RDS process as DOM\Tewr and "As Administrator", while logged on in windows as VMDOMAIN\VM? (note: I have tried creating an account with the same credentials / password as VMUSER, as hinted in the ms article above, but with no luck...)

  • VirtualBox bridged network not working as expected

    I am having hard time getting Bridged network to work with VirtualBox. Idea is to have host as well as one or more guests on same LAN. Using NAT (default) I do get access to internet and any node on the LAN when working from one of the VM guests. However, no LAN node including host can access (or ping) guest in VM. I need to be able to use any guest as if it was a physical computer on the network (need to be accessed by any machine on LAN). According to my understanding of the VirtualBox documentation, this should be Bridged mode. I think I set it correctly, well, actually there is not much to it: 1. select Bridged mode in VM network setup 2. select physical NIC of the host to connect bridge to 3. start VM When I do this, each VM does get new IP address that corresponds to LAN settings : 192.168.1.100 192.168.1.102 192.168.1.103 etc. where host is 192.168.1.80 / 255.255.255.0 (IP addresses above 100 are served by DHCP server). This seem to be correct based on what I know about ethernet. From VM I can ping other nodes like 192.168.1.50 etc. and I still get ethernet access. So far so good... But I STILL cannot ping any of the other VMs (running ones of course). I cannot ping them from other VMs, from host or from other nodes on the LAN. Aside from fact that IP addresses handed to guests are now local, this still acts same as NAT. What is going on? What am I missing? Regards, I

  • IPtables and Remote Desktop with Proxy

    So I setup a windows 2008 web server R2 on VirtualBox. Currently using Bridged Network. I can remote desktop to the machine hosting the VM (10.0.0.183) but cannot remote desktop to the VM itself (10.0.0.195). The remote port on the VM set to 5003. VM setup to accept remote connections (windows side). We also use a proxy for our internet, and I added these rules under NAT. (centOS 5) on our proxy box. -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 3389 -j ACCEPT -A REROUTING -i ppp0 -p tcp --dport 3389 -j REDIRECT --to-port 5003 -A FORWARD -d 10.0.0.195 --dport 5003 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT I've been trying for hours and hours and just cannot get it to work. I also used freedns so that we can use a domain name to connect too this VM over the internet. (the DNS points to our external IP address). If we don't get this right we will have to purchase a PPoE from an ISP to connect to this VM remotely, but I know that there is an alternative route if I can just get this port forwarding right!

  • Performance of external USB disk with ESXi5

    I have a new HP DL120 G7 server with ESXi5. One VM is a Win2003 instalation and I have an external USB2.0 drive attached by USB Controller and USB Device. I copy a 4GB file from external USB to server disk. In the VM that takes up to 10 minutes. On a native Win2003 that takes aprox. 3 minutes. I have no explaination for that diference: In any case the bottleneck is the USB connection, much slower than the disks (SAS, RAID1). If the USB connection on the VM would be USB1.1 and not USB2.0 it would take much more time. (The disk performance between server partitions on the VM is correct. - see update) Could be that my native box is extremely fast and the VM is the normal case. ??? Update I try with passtrough and a first run copy the same data in aprox. 7 minutes. Still 2 times slower than the native connection. I also did another messure and the copy between partitions on the same VM takes 3 minutes.

    At work, I use Gmail's chat, since it's encrypted and logs chats without installing or saving anything to the hard drive. At home, I use Pidgin. When I log into GMail at home, I have to log out of chat, or messages will end up in the wrong place. When I log into GMail at work, I have to log back in to chat. In other words, when I start Firefox at home, I want Gmail's chat disabled automatically. When I start Firefox at work, I want Gmail's chat enabled automatically. Is there a way to use a Greasemonkey script or similar to force logging in and logging out on specific machines? It would seem simple enough; just follow a URL or simulate clicking a link. Unfortunately, Gmail doesn't use actual links. I subclassed the delegates from QStyledItemDelegate to take advantage of stylesheets, enabling the designers to style the UI outside of the code.   • MYSQL Merging 2 results into 1 table

    Im building a c# program and am currently stuck at fetching data from MYSQL database and bind them to a grid view. I had been researching for a few days now but to no avail. I have 4 table in the database. table 1 - alpha table 2 - bravo table 3 - charlie table 4 - delta attributes of alpha (id, type, user, role ) attributes of bravo (id, type, date, user) attributes of charlie (id,type, cat, doneby, comment) atttibutes of delta (id,type, cat, doneby) * the pk of alpha and bravo is (id) * the pk of charlie and delta is (id, type) i did a query1 before by inner joinning alpha, bravo and charlie which leads to the sucessful result of (id, type, date, user, role, cat, doneby, comment) and i also did a query2 before by inner joinning alpha, bravo and delta which leads to the sucessful result of (id, type, date, user, role, cat, doneby) Right now, im trying to built a query3 which will merge the result from query1 and query2 together. the result of my attempts leads to (id, type, date, user, role, cat, doneby, comment,id, type, date, user, role, cat, doneby) As i do not want the repeated columns, I would like to seek advice on how to get the result to become like the one below by placing the records as a new tuple in the result table. (id, type, date, user, role, cat, doneby, comment) Thanks! P.S: the PK would not pose a problem due to (id, type)
