  • How to figure out how much RAM each prefork thread requires for maximum Wordpress performance on an EC2 small instance

    Just read Making WordPress Stable on EC2-Micro In the "Tuning Apache" section, I can't quite figure out how he comes up with his numbers for his prefork config. He explains how to get the numbers for an average process, which I get. But then: Or roughly 53MB per process...In this case, ten threads should be safe. This means that if we receive more than ten simultaneous requests, the other requests will be queued until a worker thread is available. In order to maximize performance, we will also configure the system to have this number of threads available all of the time. From 53MB per process, with 613MB of RAM, he somehow gets this config, which I don't get: <IfModule prefork.c> StartServers 10 MinSpareServers 10 MaxSpareServers 10 MaxClients 10 MaxRequestsPerChild 4000 </IfModule> How exactly does he get this from 53MB per process, with 613MB limit?     I have a client who has several WordPress 2.9.2 blogs that he hosts. They are getting a deface kind of hack with the Elemento_pcx exploit somehow. It drops these files in the root folder of the blog: -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 default.htm -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 default.php -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 index.asp -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 index.aspx -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 index.htm -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 index.html -rwxr-xr-x 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 index.php* It overwrites index.php. A keyword inside each file is "Elemento_pcx". It shows a white fist with a black background and the phrase "HACKED" in bold letters above it. We cannot determine how it gets in to do what it does. The wp-admin password isn't hard, but it's also not very easy either. I'll change it up a little to show you what the password sort of looks like: wviking10. Do you think it's using an engine to crack the password? If so, how come our server logs aren't flooded with wp-admin requests as it runs down a random password list? The wp-content folder has no changes inside it, but is run as chmod 777 because wp-cache required it. Also, the wp-content/cache folder is run as chmod 777 too.

    Instead of www.example.com/author/xyz, I want to use www.example.com/artist/xyz. I was hoping it was as easy as copying author.php to artist.php in my theme directory, but no such luck. Where does wordpress handle the special processing for the author archive pages? .htaccess rewriting is another option, but I wasn't able to get anything to work with the existing wordpress rewrite rules.   • Where are certain Wordpress files that I want to programmatically edit?

    I have a simple perl script that via ftp uploads files to the server hosting our website. After I do that I have to login as a Wordpress admin and use the GUI to edit a page so that it reflects the new file I just uploaded. I want to programmatically edit that file to save a few steps, but I can't find the file. Are any Wordpress files sitting on the server? The file in question is basically a subpage of the main site.

  • Are there any programs to aid in the mass-editing of Visual SourceSafe checkin comments?

    I know that in Visual SourceSafe you can go in and drill down to the history of an individual file and then drill down to an individual check-in and apply a comment to the check-in that way but that's tedious and time consuming - if you have a lot of files that were checked in at the same time and you want the same comment to apply to all of them this will take forever. I use the tool VSSReporter to generate reports of checkins and other stuff from VSS, but it cannot edit anything, only report on them. Are there any tools which will let you go back and retroactively apply comments to check-ins in an efficient and easy manner?

    In TextMate 1.5.10 r1623, you get little arrows that allow you to fold method blocks: Unfortunately, if you have a multi-lined Python comment, it doesn't recognize it, so you can't fold it: def foo(): """ How do I fold these comments? """ print "bar" TextMate has this on their site on how to customize folding: http://manual.macromates.com/en/navigation_overview#customizing_foldings ...but I'm not skilled in regex enough to do anything about it. TextMate uses the Oniguruma regex API, and I'm using the default Python.tmbundle updated to the newest version via GetBundles. Does anyone have an idea of how to do this? My personal opinion is that code should be descriptive and mostly not require comment's unless the code cannot be self describing. In the example given // Get the extension off the image filename $pieces = explode('.', $image_name); $extension = array_pop($pieces); The author said this code should be given a comment, my personal opinion is the code should be a function call that is descriptive: $extension = GetFileExtension($image_filename); However in the comments someone actually made just that suggestion: http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/php/why-youre-a-bad-php-programmer/comment-page-2/#comment-357130 The author responded by saying the commenter was "one of those people", i.e, a bad programmer. Especially when commenting the else clause the comments always feel out-of-place for me.     Using rails 2.3.2 I have a partial _foo.rhtml that begins with a comment as follows: <% # here is a comment %> <li><%= foo %></li> When I render the partial from a view in the traditional way, e.g. <% some_numbers = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] %> <ul> <%= render :partial => "foo", :collection => some_numbers %> </ul> I found that the <li> and </li> tags are ommitted in the output -- i.e. the resulting HTML is <ul> 1 2 3 4 5 </ul> However, I can solve this problem by fixing _foo.rhtml to eliminate the space between the <% and the # so that the partial now reads: <%# here is a comment %> <li><%= foo %></li> My question: what's going on here? E.g., is <% # comment %> simply incorrect syntax for including comments in a template? Or is the problem more subtle? Thanks!

    Hello, I'm making a image website with a bunch of images on the website, and below every image there is possibility of commenting the image and after that comments gets displayed without page loading and the comment content, the problem is when I have long comments which break the current line they don't get displayed since my comment box css overflow is hidden. Here is example : This is a comment - This is displayed properly This is a comment This is a comment This is a comment - this is not displayed properly since it break line.     Depending on the feedback I get, I might raise this "standard" with my colleagues. This might become a custom StyleCop rule. is there one written already? So, Stylecop already dictates this for summary, param, and return documentation tags. Do you think it makes sense to demand the same from comments? On related note: if a comment is already long, then should it be written as a proper sentence? For example (perhaps I tried too hard to illustrate a bad comment): //if exception quit vs. // If an exception occurred, then quit. If figured - most of the time, if one bothers to write a comment, then it might as well be informative. Consider these two samples: //if exception quit if (exc != null) { Application.Exit(-1); } and // If an exception occurred, then quit. if (exc != null) { Application.Exit(-1); } Arguably, one does not need a comment at all, but since one is provided, I would think that the second one is better. Please back up your opinion. Do you have a good reference for the art of commenting, particularly if it relates to .Net? Thanks.

Any Help is appreciated! (I'm using wordpress btw)

    I need a sanity check on this .htaccess (from a WordPress site) I inherited from a 5 month+ old site. What's the symptom? Google + Bing crawl, but don't index any of the pages. Let me be clear: I'm not mad about "not ranking high." I think something is (accidentally) rejecting search engine indexing. I am not an expert on .htaccess, but one part especially looked funny, the Limit GET POST line. Is it not weird to have both Allow and Deny all, with no parameters?   • Is Movable Type among the most secure PHP blogs? How secure are the various PHP blog applications?

    Basically I'm trying to find a blog for a website, and security is the highest priority in our case. We don't need any features that I would imagine are special. Wordpress was our first idea, but its reputation precedes it, and though it may have cleaned up its act lately, I'm not seeing much solid evidence. I get the impression that Movable Type (at least the Perl version) has a much better reputation for security than Wordpress (historically at least). I'm not sure I want to take a chance with Wordpress at this point, but is there some objective source I can got to to back up (or counter) the notion that MT is at least among the best? Secunia doesn't recommend using their stats for comparisons, and securityfocus.com doesn't have stats at all that I can see. Searching here http://web.nvd.nist.gov makes MT look way better than WP (at least in 2007), but this site was referenced by MT's own page boasting about their security, so I don't know how relevant it is or how seriously people take it. Any suggestions on sites where I could/should make a somewhat objective comparison?
