• Random DNS Client Issue with BIND9/Windows Server 2003 DNS

  Within our office, we have a local server running DNS, for internal related "domains", (e.g. .internal, .office, .lan, .vpn, etc.). Randomly, only the hosts configured with those extensions will stop resolving on the Windows-based workstations. Sometimes it'll work for a couple weeks without issue on one machine, then suddenly stop working, or it'll happen on another 15 times per day. It's completely random for all workstations. When troubleshooting, I have opened up a command prompt, and issued various nslookup commands for some of these hosts, and they resolve, however I've been told that nslookup uses different "libraries" for name resolution than other applications such as web browsers, email clients, etc. The only solution thus far, is manually restarting the Windows DNS Client on each workstation when this happens. Issuing the ipconfig /flushdns command multiple times helps every now and then, but is not successful enough to even attempt before restarting the DNS Client. I have tried two different DNS servers; BIND9, and Windows Server 2003 R2 DNS, and the behavior is the same. We have a single Netgear JGS524 switch all workstations and servers are connected to within the office, and a Linksys SR224G switch in another department with workstations attached.

• Silverlight 4 with WCF RIA architecture applying DDD

  Hello, In my ASP.NET MVC applications I use DDD and it works very well. I'm new to Silverlight development and would like to know how could I apply DDD to build a new architecture. I had a look on WCF RIA Services and what is exposed by default it's the simple CRUD methods. I would like to use MVVM pattern. I thought about general architecture and don't know if what I'm thinking about make sense in Silverlight development. I thought about creating Domain Model on the top of SVC. I would than expose by WCF RIA some operation that deals with aggreates in my Domain Model instead of simple CRUD. What I would aloso expose is the ViewModel entieties that could be used by the view. I don't know if it's make sense, if I'm going in a good direction or if applying DDD in Silverlight 4 development is a good practice. I didn't find much informations on Internet. I'll appreciate if you could point me to some interesting links or if you can give me some hints. Thanks for your help.

• TFS Build errors TF224003, TF215085, TF215076

  Hi, I am using TFS2008 and VS2008. I run nightly builds for about 20 applications using one build agent and the builds are scheduled for either 1am or 2am. Most of the build succeed, however 6 of them fail regularly with similar errors. Technical information (for administrator): The operation has timed out It looks to me like some kind of communication error, maybe the port gets over loaded - can this happen? Should I spread the builds out a bit more? In the build definition it says "Queue the build on the default build agent at", so I figured if I scheduled them to start at the same time they would be queued and occur sequentially. Most of the suggestions I've found online for these errors are for all or nothing scenarios where no builds work at all whereas my problem is most build but some consistently do not. Judging by the dates of the last successful builds of these 6 failing builds I believe it is the same 6 failing every night. (I'm editing the build definitions now to keep the failed builds so I can get some more info on the problem) Any help on this would be much appreciated. James.

• Interpret Objective C scripts at runtime on iPhone?

  Is there anyway to load an objective c script at runtime, and run it against the classes/methods/objects/functions in the current iPhone app? The reason i ask is that I've been playing around with iPhone wax, a lua interpreter that can be embedded in an iPhone app, and it works very nicely, in the sense that any object/method/function that's publically available in your Objective C code is automatically bridged, and available in lua. This allows you to rapidly prototype applications by simply making the core of your app be lua files that are in the users documents directory. Just reload the app, and you can test out changes to your lua files without needing to rebuild the app in XCode - a big time saver! But, with Apples recent 3.1.3 SDK stuff, it got me thinking that the safest approach for doing this type of rapid prototypeing would be if you could use Objective C as the interpreted code... That way, worst case scenario, you could just compile it into your app before your release, instead. I have heard that the lua source can be compiled to byte code, and linked in at build time, but I think the ultimate safe thing would be if the scripted source was in objective c, not lua. This leads me to wondering (i've searched, but come up with nothing) if there are any examples on how to embed an Objective C Interpreter in an iPhone app? This would allow you to rapidly prototype your app against the current classes that are built into your binary, and, when your about to deploy your app, instead of running the classes through the in app interpreter, you compile them in instead.

• iPhone: Can access files in documents directory in Simulator, but not device

  Hi there! I'm writing an app that copies some contents of the bundle into the applications Document's directory, mainly images and media. I then access this media throughout the app from the Document's directory. This works totally fine in the Simulator, but not on the device. The assets just come up as null. I've done NSLog's and the paths to the files look correct, and I've confirmed that the files exist in the directory by dumping a file listing in the console. Any ideas? Thank you!   Hi guys, I've hit a bit of a wall. Any help would be appreciated. I have an app that I want to use DexClassLoader to load another apk file. Here is my code: DexClassLoader dLoader = new DexClassLoader("/sdcard/download/test.apk","/sdcard/download",null,ClassLoader.getSystemClassLoader().getParent()); Class calledClass = dLoader.loadClass("com.test.classname"); Intent it=new Intent(this, calledClass); it.setClassName("com.test", "com.test.classname"); startActivity(it); Now I had already installed test.apk so when I ran the above code it worked fine and launched the application. However I want to be able to run this without test.apk being installed already (as that would defeat the entire point of the application) . So I uninstalled it and when I ran the my app again I get this error: android.content.ActivityNotFoundException: Unable to find explicit activity class {com.test/com.test.classname}; have you declared this activity in your AndroidManifest.xml. So I'm a bit stumped here. This activity is declared in the Manifest of the apk I am trying to run. I can't declare it in my applications Manifest. Any ideas? Thanks, Craig

There is System.Speech.Recognition from the assembly System.Speech (in System.Speech.dll). System.Speech.dll is a core DLL in the .NET Framework class library 3.0 and later There is also Microsoft.Speech.Recognition from the assembly Microsoft.Speech (in microsoft.speech.dll). Microsoft.Speech.dll is part of the UCMA 2.0 SDK I find the docs confusing and I have the following questions: System.Speech.Recognition says it is for "The Windows Desktop Speech Technology", does this mean it cannot be used on a server OS or cannot be used for high scale applications? The UCMA 2.0 Speech SDK ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd266409%28v=office.13%29.aspx ) says that it requires Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 as a prerequisite. However, I’ve been told at conferences and meetings that if I do not require OCS features like presence and workflow I can use the UCMA 2.0 Speech API without OCS. Is this true? If I’m building a simple recognition app for a server application (say I wanted to automatically transcribe voice mails) and I don’t need features of OCS, what are the differences between the two APIs?

  Summary: One of our web applications requires write access to C:\Windows\Temp. However, no matter how much I weaken the NTFS permission, procmon shows ACCESS DENIED. Background (which might or might not be relevant for the problem): We are using OLEDB to access an MS Access database (which is located outside of C:\Windows\Temp). Unfortunately, this OLEDB driver requires write access to the user profile's TEMP directory (which happens to be C:\Windows\Temp when running under IIS 7.5), otherwise the dreaded "Unspecified Error" OleDbException is thrown. See KB 926939 for details. I followed the steps in the KB article, but it doesn't help. Details: This is the output of icacls C:\Windows\Temp. For debugging purposes I gave full permissions to Everyone.   We just got TFS installed and ready go. I'm trying to decide on the disk structure. Let's suppose I have two BizTalk projects called Common and BookTransfer (in actuality I have 7). [At this client, we adopted the style of having schemas, orchs, maps in one project called BizTalk.Artifacts]. A folder with the name "components" is C# code. We are using a CodePlex tool called BizTalk deployment framework which somewhat dictates part of the structure. • How to make Delphi Prism indexed properties visible to C# when properties are not default

  I have several Delphi Prism classes with indexed properties that I use a lot on my C# web applications (we are migrating a big Delphi Win32 system to ASP.Net). My problem is that it seems that C# can't see the indexed properties if they aren't the default properties of their classes. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I'm completely lost. I know that this question looks a lot like a bug report, but I need to know if someone else knows how to solve this before I report a bug. If I have a class like this: TMyClass = public class private ... method get_IndexedBool(index: Integer): boolean; method set_IndexedBool(index: Integer; value: boolean); public property IndexedBool[index: Integer]: boolean read get_IndexedBool write set_IndexedBool; default; // make IndexedBool the default property end; I can use this class in C# like this: var myObj = new TMyClass(); myObj[0] = true; However, if TMyClass is defined like this: TMyClass = public class private ... method get_IndexedBool(index: Integer): boolean; method set_IndexedBool(index: Integer; value: boolean); public property IndexedBool[index: Integer]: boolean read get_IndexedBool write set_IndexedBool; // IndexedBool is not the default property anymore end; Then the IndexedBool property becomes invisible in C#. The only way I can use it is doing this: var myObj = new TMyClass(); myObj.set_IndexedBool(0, true); I don't know if I'm missing something, but I can't see the IndexedBool property if I remove the default in the property declaration. Besides that, I'm pretty sure that it is wrong to have direct access to a private method of a class instance. Any ideas?

• Embedded pdf object steals focus and will not let it go

  Hi guys, I was given the task of adding some usability to one of our applications, ie. make sure that every controll has a shortcut key, and that they can be reached by "tabbing" through the page. The gui runs in a IE. control on a winform, and consists of asp.net pages, so basically it is just asp.net always running in internet explorer. My problem is that one of the pages has an embeded pdf in it, like so: <object tabindex="-1" height="273" width="663" visible="false" type="Application/pdf" data="showpdf.ashx#navpanes=0"></object> showpdf.ashx is an httphandler, that streams the pdf contents to the response. It does not handle focus in any way. Now when I run this page, the pdf application steals focus, no matter what I do to set it to another control. And when it takes focus, I cannot take it back with the keyboard. Only a mouseclick on the page will set it to another control. I have tried to set focus in code behind OnPreRender, or in jevescript, but no luck. It seems that the http handler always runs after all the other code, and it sets focus on the pdf object. Any thought would be greatly appreciated.

• How can I use Window.ShowActivated = false with Maximized window?

  I have an application that has a splash screen shown before I create my main window. I want to avoid the main window stealing the focus when it gets created if the user has focused another application while the splash screen was shown. My application's startup looks like this: private void Application_Startup(object sender, StartupEventArgs e) { SplashScreenService.Start(); // Initializing stuff... ... // Ready to open the main window. MainWindow mainWindow = MainWindow(); mainWindow.ShowActivated = SplashScreenService.HasFocus(); mainWindow.ShowDialog(); } To prevent the main window from getting activated, I'm setting Window.ShowActivated to false, only if the splash screen has lost the focus. But this causes an exception: InvalidOperationException: Cannot show Window when ShowActivated is false and WindowState is set to Maximized. Indeed, my MainWindow sets the WindowState to Maximized (restored from previous session settings). I don't understand why there is such a limitation with the ShowActivated feature. I couldn't find any documentation about this issue. I tried forcing WindowState to Normal when ShowActivated is false, and it prevents the exception, but it also activates the window! Maybe changing the window state actually causes an activation? Is there a trick I can use to work around this? I want to restore my main window in a maximized state, and not have the main window steal focus away from other applications if the user has focused away from my app during the splash screen.

• Eclipse Helios - Not Stopping at Breakpoints (Help!)

  Dear Eclipse Expert, I recently upgraded from Eclipse Galileo to Helios. Helios stops at breakpoints ONLY when debugging "as a PHP Script", but not when debugging "as a Web Page". When debugging as a web page, it looks like the correct debug query string to start a debug session is getting tacked on to the url, like so: http://localhost/hello.php?XDEBUG_SESSION_START=ECLIPSE_DBGP &KEY=129798139020511 but elipse does not stop at the breakpoints. It just zooms thru the code and displays the output in the browser. • Coding a parser for a domain specific language in Java

  We want to design a simple domain specific language for writing test scripts to automatically test a XML-based interface of one of our applications. A sample test would be: Get an input XML file from network shared folder or subversion repository Import the XML file using the interface Check if the import result message was successfull Export the XML corresponding to the object that was just imported using the interface and check if it correct. If the domain specific language can be declarative and its statements look as close as my sentences in the sample above as possible, it will be awesome because people won't necessarily have to be programmers to understand/write/maintain the tests. Something like: newObject = GET FILE "http://svn/repos/template1.xml" reponseMessage = IMPORT newObject newObjectID = GET PROPERTY '/object/id/' FROM responseMessage (..) But then I'm not sure how to implement a simple parser for that languange in Java. Back in school, 10 years ago, I coded a language parser using Lex and Yacc for the C language. Maybe an approach would be to use some equivalent for Java? Or, I could give up the idea of having a declarative language and choose an XML-based language instead, which would possibly be easier to create a parser for? What approach would you recommend?

• Invoking WCF functions using Reflection

  I am pretty new to WCF applications. I have a WCF application that is using NetTcpBinding. I wanted to invoke the functions in WCF service using the System.Reflection's Methodbase Invoke method. I mean I wanted to Dynamically call the Function by passing the String as the Function name. Reflection works great for Web Service or a Windows application or any dll or class. So their is certain way to do this for WCF also but I am not able to find that. I am getting the Assembly Name than it's type everything fine but as we cannot create an instance of the Interface class I tried to open the WCF connection using the binding and tried to pass that object but it's throwing the exception as : "Object does not match target type." I have opened the connection and passed the object and type is of interface only. I don't know whether I'm trying wrong thing or in wrong way. Any idea how shall I accomplish this??? The NetTCPBinding all are properly given while opening the connection. And one more thing I am using WCF as a Windows Service using NETTCPBinding.

• Returning Meaningful Exceptions from a WCF Project

  I am pretty new to WCF in general. What little experience I have comes from using fairly simple .SVC services in ASP.NET web applications. I tried experimenting with using a WCF Project for the first time, and ran into a major show-stopper. As I’m sure most are aware, for some strange reason, in a web application in which the customErrors mode is set to On , services (both .ASMX and .SVC) will not return exception details to the client. Instead, the exception and stack trace are emptied, and the message always reads “There was an error processing the request”, which is not at all helpful. When services are directly hosted inside the web application itself, it’s easy to work around this restriction by placing the services in a dedicated folder, and setting for that folder. However, I’m running into this same issue with exceptions not being returned from services that live in a separate WCF project. Thing is, I don’t know how to work around that. In a nutshell: I need to get my WCF Project services to bubble REAL exceptions to the client – or at least, the original exception message, instead of “There was an error processing the request”.

• Windows services with windows forms in the same process

  Hello, I have a c# application that runs as a windows service controlling socket connections and other things. Also, there is another windows forms application to control and configure this service (systray with start, stop, show form with configuration parameters). I'm using .net remoting to do the IPC and that was fine, but now I want to show some real traffic and other reports and remoting will not meet my performance requirements. So I want to combine both applications in one. Here is the problem: When I started the form from the windows service, nothing happened. Googling around I've found that I have to right click the service, go to Log on and check the "Allow service to interact with desktop" option. Since I don't want to ask my users to do that, I got some code googling again to set this option in the user's regedit during installation time. The problem is that even setting this option, it doesn't work. I have to open the Log On options of the service (it is checked), uncheck and check again. So, how to solve that? How is the best way to have a windows service with a systray control in the same process, available to any user logging in? UPDATE: Thanks for the comments so far, guys. I agree it is better to use IPC and I know that it is bad to mix windows services and user interfaces. Even though, I want to know how to do that.
