• Cannot locate Ubuntu Software Center via Firefox to open APT links

  I'm trying to locate where the Ubuntu Software Center is to choose as default for handling APT links in Firefox. I can click on the links, and I get the pop-up, but Ubuntu Software Center is not there. I tried to choose an application through Firefox's settings and through the pop-up, but I don't know the path. As you can see by my screen shot for the pop-up I chose the wrong one as that doesn't work. What is the correct path I need to select the correct file? EDIT - I added a fourth screen shot. I don't have it in that location. This is what I have. My view is in ABC order, and it's showing hidden files.

• Wireless card power management

  I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this? • Some Adsense domain's ads are causing document.write() statements that remove the html from the page

  All that is output on the page is the domain name of the advertiser, for example 'www.solar-aid.org'. The rest of the content is stripped, I believe because of a document.write() statement. I'd like to know if this is a common issue or something wrong with our setup. There are three domains causing the issue, which we've blocked from Adsense as a result. solar-aid.org kiva.org grameenfoundation.org Given the type of organizations I think they may be within the default group of 'public service ads' within the Backup Ads setting. If the issue doesn't completely resolve itself soon (one customer of ours complained today, even though I blocked them 5+ days ago), I'll disable public service ads and select the 'fill space with a solid color' option.

The error is quite obscure and you have to enable WCF error reporting in order to have the error details and you’ll discover that they are related to some missing permission in MDS and DQS_STAGING_DATA database.   Oracle SQL Developer version 3.2.1 is now available. I recommend that everyone now upgrade to this release. It features more than 200 bug fixes, tweaks, and polish applied to the 3.2 edition. The high profile bug fixes submitted by customers and users on our forums are listed in all their glory for your review. I want to highlight a few of the changes though, as I recognize many of you lack the time and/or patience to ‘read the docs.’ That would include me, which is why I enjoy writing these kinds of blog posts. I’m lazy – just like you! No more artificial line breaks between CREATE OR REPLACE and your PL/SQL In versions 3.2 and older, when you pull up your stored procedural objects in our editor, you would see a line break inserted between the CREATE OR REPLACE and then the body of your code. In version 3.2.1, we have removed the line break. 3.1 3.2.1 Trivia Did You Know? The database doesn’t store the ‘CREATE’ or ‘CREATE OR REPLACE’ bit of your PL/SQL code in the database. If we look at the USER_SOURCE view, we can see that the code begins with the object name. So the CREATE OR REPLACE bit is ‘artificial’ The intent is to give you the code necessary to recreate your object – and have it ‘compile’ into the database. We pretty much HAVE to add the ‘CREATE OR REPLACE.’ From now on it will appear inline with the first line of your code. Exporting Tables & Views When exporting data from your tables or views, previous versions of SQL Developer presented a 3 step wizard. It allows you to choose your columns and apply data filters for what is exported. This was kind of redundant. The grids already allowed you to select your columns and apply filters. Wouldn’t it be more intuitive AND efficient to just make the grids behave in a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) fashion? In version 3.2.1, that is exactly what will happen. The wizard now only has two steps and the grid will export the data and columns as defined in the visible grid. Let the grid properties define what is actually exported! Select many tables, put them in in a single Excel worksheet If you try this in previous versions of SQL Developer it will just write the first table to the Excel file. This is one of the bugs we addressed in v3.2.1.   For various reasons we are required to add feeds to our product. The main reason is to be able to say to potential buyers that "yes, we have feeds". We do not actually expect the feature to be used that much. Ideally we would like to provide both RSS and Atom feeds. However, at the moment we are severely pressed for time and are forced to select just one of these. Should we use Atom or RSS? Feature-wise we are fine with either, so I am only looking for information about the popularity and support for the various formats. Are there many feed readers out there without Atom support?

• Ubuntu CD Boots to Black Screen

  I have a new Asus N76 Notebook and just downloaded the lastest ubuntu 12.10 desktop CD (x64). When I boot from the CD, I get to the selection asking to try or install Ubuntu (the text screen not the one with the Ubuntu logo). When I select one of these options, I get only a black screen. I have tried nomodeset, acpi=off but it does not change anything. I also tried booting a CD and an USB stick (same result). I have no idea what to try next. I have installed Ubuntu on several computers yet, never had this problem. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Thomas

  I'm writing a very basic turn based strategy game which allows a player to select units and attack enemy units on their turn. The game is written in Java using the slick2d library and I plan to use kyronet for the networking api. I want the game to be networked, but I do not know how I should go about it. My current idea is to connect two users together, and the first one to join the game becomes the game host, while the other becomes the client. However after reading http://gafferongames.com/networking-for-game-programmers/what-every-programmer-needs-to-know-about-game-networking/ it seems my game would be suited to a peer to peer lockstep model. Would that make programming the networking side much easier? Any suggestions on how I should structure my networking would be greatly appreciated

• Can't boot into windows7 after installling Ubuntu-12.04 (LTS) on HP 6735s laptop 12.04

  I installed Ubuntu-12.04 (LTS) through a USB drive and when it's done i cant load Windows 7 (Loader)(on/dev/sda1) in GRUB. When I select that, it displays a black screen and then returns to GRUB but i'm still able to boot into 12.04. Help me to solve this, I installed Boot-repair,I checked reinstall grub in the main option tab and checked place boot flag on sda1 windows7 in other options tab , re booted and it wasnt working this is was bootinfo summary http://paste.ubuntu.com/1206875/, i also tried sudo grub-install "(hd0)" sudo update-grub in the terminal and i gave me found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1 and rebooted but i still wasnt able to boot into windows 7, this is my bootinfoo summary after i typed those two commands http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/1206955/ please help me,I'm at wits end thanks Dimeji

• Trash Destination Adapter

  The Trash Destination and this article came from early experiences of using SSIS and community feedback at the time. When developing a package it is very useful to have a destination adapter that does nothing but consume rows with no setup requirement. You often want run a package part way through development, or just add a path so you can set a Data Viewer. There are stock tasks that can be used, but with the Trash Destination all columns are treated as selected automatically (usage type of read-only), so the pipeline knows they are required. It is also obvious that this is for development or diagnostic purposes, and is clearly not a part of the functional design of the package. It is also ideal for just playing around and exploring concepts in SSIS, and is often used in conjunction with the Data Generator Source. Using these two components it is easy to setup a test of an expression in the Derived Column Transformation for example. The Data Generator Source provides some dummy data, and the Trash Destination allows you to anchor the output path and set a Data Viewer to examine the results. It can also be used when performance tuning packages. It is a consistent and known quantity that has no external influences, so it is ideal as a destination when breaking the data flow into sections to isolate a bottleneck. The adapter is really simple to use and requires no setup. Simply drop it onto the pipeline designer and use it to terminate your data flow path. Installation The component is provided as an MSI file which you can download and run to install it. This simply places the files on disk in the correct locations and also installs the assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache as per Microsoft’s recommendations. You may need to restart the SQL Server Integration Services service, as this caches information about what components are installed, as well as restarting any open instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. Finally, for 2005/2008, you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox manually. Right-click the toolbox, and select Choose Items.... Select the SSIS Data Flow Items tab, and then check the Trash Destination transformation in the Choose Toolbox Items window. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component? We recommend you follow best practice and apply the current Microsoft SQL Server Service pack to your SQL Server servers and workstations.   We recently re-designed Developer Fusion and as part of that we needed to ensure that any external links were not broken in the process. In order to monitor this, we used the awesome LogParser tool. All you need to do is open up a command prompt, navigate to the directory with your web site's log files in, and run a query like this: "c:\program files (x86)\log parser 2.2\logparser" "SELECT top 500 cs-uri-stem,count(*) FROM u_ex*.log WHERE sc-status=404 GROUP BY cs-uri-stem order by count(*) desc" -rtp:-1 topMissingUrls.txt And you've got a text file with the top 500 requested URLs that are returning 404. Simple!

• Installing Ubuntu 14.04 on macbook pro EFI

  Macbook pro: mavericks, 5.2, graphics: nvidia geforce 9600M I followed the guides from here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFIBooting#Detect_.28U.29EFI_firmware_processor_architecture and http://www.rodsbooks.com/ubuntu-efi/. What I have is the following: /dev/sda apple partitions /boot / (root) swap When installing ubuntu, I did not install the boot loader during installation but did so in a chroot environment after installing grub-efi. I installed grub to /dev/sda1 (efi) which created the grub64.efi file in efi/ubuntu. This allows the refined boot manager to bring up grub and select ubuntu however, the graphics does not work. Even after adding nomodeset and removing quiet/splash from the kernel parameters. Any ideas on what could be wrong? To be clear, if I remove quiet/splash, I can see all the text startup messages being printed out however, the display manager doesn't appear to start (the screen stays black). Oddly enough though, the ubuntu startup sound can be heard.

  I’m currently working for a client on a PowerBuilder to WPF migration.  It’s one of those “I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you” kind of clients and the quick-lime pits are currently occupied by the EMC tech…but I’ve said too much already. At approximately 3 or 4 pm that day users of the Batman[1] application here in Gotham[1] started to experience problems accessing the application.  Batman[2] is a document management system here that also integrates with the ERP system.  Very little goes on here that doesn’t involve Batman in some way.  The errors being received seemed to point to network issues (TCP protocol error, connection forcibly closed by the remote host etc…) but the real issue was much more insidious. Connecting to the database via SSMS and performing selects on certain tables underlying the application areas that were having problems started to reveal the issue.  You couldn’t do a SELECT * FROM MyTable without it bombing and giving the same error noted above.  A run of DBCC CHECKDB revealed 14 tables with corruption.  One of the tables with issues was the Document table.  Pretty central to a “document management” system.  Information was obtained from IT that a single drive in the SAN went bad in the night.  A new drive was in place and was working fine.  The partition that held the Batman database is configured for RAID Level 5 so a single drive failure shouldn’t have caused any trouble and yet, the database is corrupted.  They do hourly incremental backups here so the first thing done was to try a restore.  A restore of the most recent backup failed so they worked backwards until they hit a good point.  This successful restore was for a backup at 3AM – a full day behind.  This time also roughly corresponds with the time the SAN started to report the drive failure.  The plot thickens… I got my hands on the output from DBCC CHECKDB and noticed a pattern.  What’s sad is that nobody that should have noticed the pattern in the DBCC output did notice.  There was a rush to do things to try and recover the data before anybody really understood what was wrong with it in the first place.  Cooler heads must prevail in these circumstances and some investigation should be done and a plan of action laid out or you could end up making things worse[3].  DBCC CHECKDB also told us that: repair_allow_data_loss is the minimum repair level for the errors found by DBCC CHECKDB Yikes.  That means that the database is so messed up that you’re definitely going to lose some stuff when you repair it to get it back to a consistent state.  All the more reason to do a little more investigation into the problem.  Rescuing this database is preferable to having to export all of the data possible from this database into a new one.  This is a fifteen year old application with about seven hundred tables.  There are TRIGGERS everywhere not to mention the referential integrity constraints to deal with.  Only fourteen of the tables have an issue.  We have a good backup that is missing the last 24 hours of business which means we could have a “do-over” of yesterday but that’s not a very palatable option either. All of the affected tables had TEXT columns and all of the errors were about LOB data types and orphaned off-row data which basically means TEXT, IMAGE or NTEXT columns.  If we did a SELECT on an affected table and excluded those columns, we got all of the rows.  We exported that data into a separate database.  Things are looking up.  Working on a copy of the production database we then ran DBCC CHECKDB with REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS and that “fixed” everything up.   The allow data loss option will delete the bad rows.  This isn’t too horrible as we have all of those rows minus the text fields from out earlier export.  Now I could LEFT JOIN to the exported data to find the missing rows and INSERT them minus the TEXT column data. We had the restored data from the good 3AM backup that we could now JOIN to and, with fingers crossed, recover the missing TEXT column information.  We got lucky in that all of the affected rows were old and in the end we didn’t lose anything.  :O  All of the row counts along the way worked out and it looks like we dodged a major bullet here. We’ve heard back from EMC and it turns out the SAN firmware that they were running here is apparently buggy.  This thing is only a couple of months old.  Grrr…. They dispatched a technician that night to come and update it .  That explains why RAID didn’t save us. All-in-all this could have been a lot worse.  Given the root cause here, they basically won the lottery in not losing anything. • Mouse Cursor Freezes Randomly on Ubuntu 10.10

  Hi, I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 its installed using Wubi, dual boot with Windows. It's fresh install. Randomly mouse cursor freezes and cant click anything on the screen. I can move mouse but cant click. "It causes when select a text something" So I'm using keyboard to to reboot system. Then it back to normal after reboot. Tried with unplugging-plugging mouse don't work. PC: Asus laptop with Intel GMA 950 graphic card. A4 tech optical mouse. Ubuntu 10.10 completely updated and upgraded. How can I get around this? Thanks.

  I received following question: “How do we know how many pending IO requests are there for database files (.mdf, .ldf) individually?” Very interesting question and indeed answer is very interesting as well. Here is the quick script which I use to find the same. It has to be run in the context of the database for which you want to know pending IO statistics.
