• Does anyone know how to appropriately deal with user timezones in rails 2.3?

  We're building a rails app that needs to display dates (and more importantly, calculate them) in multiple timezones. Can anyone point me towards how to work with user timezones in rails 2.3(.5 or .8) The most inclusive article I've seen detailing how user time zones are supposed to work is here: http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/howtos/time-zones... although it is unclear when this was written or for what version of rails. Specifically it states that: "Time.zone - The time zone that is actually used for display purposes. This may be set manually to override config.time_zone on a per-request basis." Keys terms being "display purposes" and "per-request basis". Locally on my machine, this is true. However on production, neither are true. Setting Time.zone persists past the end of the request (to all subsequent requests) and also affects the way AR saves to the DB (basically treating any date as if it were already in UTC even when its not), thus saving completely inappropriate values. We run Ruby Enterprise Edition on production with passenger. If this is my problem, do we need to switch to JRuby or something else? Additionally, checking the database reveals that the test action when run after test2 saved a JunkLead record with a date of 2010-12-22 15:00:00, which is clearly wrong.

• Python - Bitmap won't draw/display

  I have been working on this project for some time now - it was originally supposed to be a test to see if, using wxPython, I could build a button 'from scratch.' From scratch means: that i would have full control over all the aspects of the button (i.e. controlling the BMP's that are displayed... what the event handlers did... etc.) I have run into several problems (as this is my first major python project.) Now, when the all the code is working for the life of me I can't get an image to display. • Is it possible to implement bitwise operators using integer arithmetic?

  Hello World! I am facing a rather peculiar problem. I am working on a compiler for an architecture that doesn't support bitwise operations. However, it handles signed 16 bit integer arithmetics and I was wondering if it would be possible to implement bitwise operations using only: Addition (c = a + b) Subtraction (c = a - b) Division (c = a / b) Multiplication (c = a * b) Modulus (c = a % b) Minimum (c = min(a, b)) Maximum (c = max(a, b)) Comparisons (c = (a < b), c = (a == b), c = (a <= b), et.c.) Jumps (goto, for, et.c.) The bitwise operations I want to be able to support are: Or (c = a | b) And (c = a & b) Xor (c = a ^ b) Left Shift (c = a << b) Right Shift (c = a b) (All integers are signed so this is a problem) Signed Shift (c = a b) One's Complement (a = ~b) (Already found a solution, see below) Normally the problem is the other way around; how to achieve arithmetic optimizations using bitwise hacks. However not in this case. Writable memory is very scarce on this architecture, hence the need for bitwise operations. The bitwise functions themselves should not use a lot of temporary variables. However, constant read-only data & instruction memory is abundant. A side note here also is that jumps and branches are not expensive and all data is readily cached. Jumps cost half the cycles as arithmetic (including load/store) instructions do. On other words, all of the above supported functions cost twice the cycles of a single jump. Some thoughts that might help: I figured out that you can do one's complement (negate bits) with the following code: // Bitwise one's complement b = ~a; // Arithmetic one's complement b = -1 - a; I also remember the old shift hack when dividing with a power of two so the bitwise shift can be expressed as: // Bitwise left shift b = a << 4; // Arithmetic left shift b = a * 16; // 2^4 = 16 // Signed right shift b = a >>> 4; // Arithmetic right shift b = a / 16; For the rest of the bitwise operations I am slightly clueless. I wish the architects of this architecture would have supplied bit-operations. I would also like to know if there is a fast/easy way of computing the power of two (for shift operations) without using a memory data table. A naive solution would be to jump into a field of multiplications: b = 1; switch (a) { case 15: b = b * 2; case 14: b = b * 2; // ... exploting fallthrough (instruction memory is magnitudes larger) case 2: b = b * 2; case 1: b = b * 2; } Or a Set & Jump approach: switch (a) { case 15: b = 32768; break; case 14: b = 16384; break; // ... exploiting the fact that a jump is faster than one additional mul // at the cost of doubling the instruction memory footprint. case 2: b = 4; break; case 1: b = 2; break; }

• Problem with memset after an instance of a user defined class is created and a file is opened

  I'm having a weird problem with memset, that was something to do with a class I'm creating before it and a file I'm opening in the constructor. The class I'm working with normally reads in an array and transforms it into another array, but that's not important. The class I'm working with is: #include <vector> #include <algorithm> using namespace std; class PreProcess { public: PreProcess(char* fileName,char* outFileName); void SortedOrder(); private: vector< vector<double > > matrix; void SortRow(vector<double> &row); char* newFileName; vector< pair<double,int> > rowSorted; }; The other functions aren't important, because I've stopped calling them and the problem persists. Essentially I've narrowed it down to my constructor: PreProcess::PreProcess(char* fileName,char* outFileName):newFileName(outFileName){ ifstream input(fileName); input.close(); //this statement is inconsequential } I also read in the file in my constructor, but I've found that the problem persists if I don't read in the matrix and just open the file. Essentially I've narrowed it down to if I comment out those two lines the memset works properly, otherwise it doesn't. Now to the context of the problem I'm having with it: I wrote my own simple wrapper class for matrices. If it helps I'm running GCC 64-bit version 4.2.4 on Ubuntu.I assume there's some functionality of memset that I'm not properly understanding.

• handling filename* parameters with spaces via RFC 5987 results in '+' in filenames

  I have some legacy code I am dealing with (so no I can't just use a URL with an encoded filename component) that allows a user to download a file from our website. Since our filenames are often in many different languages they are all stored as UTF-8. I wrote some code to handle the RFC5987 conversion to a proper filename* parameter. This works great until I have a filename with non-ascii characters and spaces. Per RFC, the space character is not part of attr_char so it gets encoded as %20. I have new versions of Chrome as well as Firefox and they are all converting to %20 to + on download. I have tried not encoding the space and putting the encoded filename in quotes and get the same result. I have sniffed the response coming from the server to verify that the servlet container wasn't mucking with my headers and they look correct to me. The RFC even has examples that contain %20. Am I missing something, or do all of these browsers have a bug related to this? Many thanks in advance. The code I use to encode the filename is below. • Polymorphism problem: How to check type of derived class?

  Hi, this is my first question here :) I know that I should not check for object type but instead use dynamic_cast, but that would not solve my problem. I have class called Extension and interfaces called IExtendable and IInitializable, IUpdatable, ILoadable, IDrawable (the last four are basicly the same). If Extension implements IExtendable interface, it can extend itself with different Extension objects. The problem is that I want to allow the Extension which implements IExtendable to extend only with Extension that implements the same interfaces as the original Extension. I want to do this because when e.g. Update() will be called on some Extension which implements IExtendable and IUpdateable, it will be also called on these Extensions which extends this Extension. So when I'm adding some Extension to Extension which implements IExtendable and some of the IUpdatable, ILoadable... I'm forced to check if Extension that is going to be add implements these interfaces too. So In the IExtendable::AddExtension(Extension*) I would need to do something like this: void IExtendable::AddExtension(Extension* pEx) { bool ok = true; // check wheather this extension can take pEx // do this with every interface if ((*pEx is IUpdatable) && (*this is_not IUpdatable)) ok = false; if (ok) this->extensions.push_back(pEx); } But how? • Unable to connect SQL Server instance from Visual Studio 2008 Version 9.0

  I am getting the below error from VS on an 32-bit XP Professional server even though I set Tools-Options-Database Tools-Data Connections to "SIDEKICK", which is the name of my computer. In other words SIDEKICK should default to the full SQLSERVER. In other words, I want VS to use SQLSERVER instead of SQLSERVER EXPRESS. And I can clearly see my database both from VS in the Server Explorer and also in SSMS 2008. Furthermore, I can view the tables of this database in Server Explorer from VS. I do not get any build errors. And it looks like all of the naming is consistent in my web.config file. I am developing my website according to a Microsoft tutorial, so I should not be getting an error. • seg fault caused by malloc and sscanf in a function

  Hi, I want to open a text file (see below), read the first int in every line and store it in an array, but I get an segmentation fault. I got rid of all gcc warnings, I read through several tutorials I found on the net and searched stackoverflow for solutions, but I could't make out, what I am doing wrong. It works when I have everything in the main function (see example 1), but not when I transfer it to second function (see example 2 further down). In example 2 I get, when I interpret gdb correctly a seg fault at sscanf (line,"%i",classes[i]);. I'm afraid, it could be something trivial, but I already wasted one day on it. Thanks in advance. • Help to restructure my Doc/View more correctly

  Edited by OP. My program is in need of a lot of cleanup and restructuring. In another post I asked about leaving the MFC DocView framework and going to the WinProc & Message Loop way (what is that called for short?). Well at present I am thinking that I should clean up what I have in Doc View and perhaps later convert to non-MFC it that even makes sense. My Document class currently has almost nothing useful in it. I think a place to start is the InitInstance() function (posted below). I'm tired of feeling embarrassed about my code. I either need correction or reassurance, or both. :) Also, all the miscellaneous items are in no particular order.   So I starting the project of writing a simplified sheel for linux in c. I am not at all proficient with c nor with Linux that's exactly the reason I decided it would be a good idea. Starting with the parser, I have already encountered some problems. The code should be straightforward that's why I didn't include any comments. I am getting a warning with gcc: "comparison with string literals results in unspecified behaviour" at the lines commented with "WARNING HERE" (see code below). I have no idea why this causes an warning, but the real problem is that even though I am comparing an "<" to an "<" is doesn't get inside the if... I am looking for an answer for the problem explained, however if there's something that you see in the code that should be improved please say so. Just take in mind I am not that proficient and that this is still a work in progress (or better yet, a work in start).   I wish to send multiple requests to the server, simultaneously. The problem statement will be: Read a text file containing multiple URL’s. Open each URL in the web browser. Collect the Cookie information for each call, and store it to a file. Send another call: http://myserver.com:1111/cookie?out=text Store the output (body text) of this file to a separate file for each call made in 4 Open the next URL in the text file given in 1 and repeat steps 1-6. The above is to be run with multi-threading, so that I can send around 5-10 URL requests simultaneously. I have implemented something in Selenium using Java, but have not been able to do the multi-threading approach. Then when I capture the cookie information from here and store it, I open another window to output all the cookie information for that server to my browser window. This works fine when I do outside of Selenium code, but when I do it within the above code, it opens a "Save As..." popup and my tests stop. :-( I wish to save the contents of that second call to a new file, but have not been able to do the same. Also, if I have to send multiple such requests to the server, how would that be possible in Java using a Selenium Framework. Currently, I am opening multiple instances of the framework and running them with different parameters :-(
