• NVelocity ASP.NET Examples

  I'm looking to use NVelocity in my ASP.NET MVC application, not as a view engine, just for rendering some email templates. However, I cannot for the life of me get it to work. I have downloaded it from the castle project and followed the example at http://www.castleproject.org/others/nvelocity/usingit.html#step1 No matter what I try I don't seem to be able to load a template located in my site. The example suggests using the absolute path, which I have tried to no avail: Template t = engine.GetTemplate("/Templates/TestEmail.vm"); So please can someone give me two examples. One of loading a template located in the web site directory and secondly one parsing a string variable (as it is likely that my templates will be stored in a database). Many thanks Ben

• 2D colliding n-body simulation (fast Collision Detection for large number of balls)

  Hello I want to write a program for simulating a motion of high number (N = 1000 - 10^5 and more) of bodies (circles) on 2D plane. All bodies have equal size and the only force between them is elastic collision. I want to get something like but in larger scale, with more balls and more dense filling of the plane (not a gas model as here, but smth like boiling water model). So I want a fast method of detection that ball number i does have any other ball on its path within 2*radius+V*delta_t distance. I don't want to do a full search of collision with N balls for each of i ball. (This search will be N^2.) PS Sorry for loop-animated GIF. Just press Esc to stop it. (Will not work in Chrome).

• How do you use any2mobi command line tool (part of Calibre) to make mobi files from HTML?

  I am on MAC OS X 10.5.5. I installed Calibre, a tool for converting e-book files from one format to another. It has a GUI as well as command line tools. I am trying to run the command line tool "any2mobi" to convert HTML files to MOBI pocket format or Kindle AZW format, with a TOC. I get the error "-bash: any2mobi: command not found". Clearly, any2mobi is not in my path. Where is it? I tried searching but came up empty. I installed version 0.6.0b6 of Calibre.

  Hi, I'm having difficulties animating my custom layer property using Core Anmiation. My question is how the presentation of a CALayer is generated. Here is what I have now: @interface MyLayer : CALayer { NSMutableDictionary* customProperties; } @property (nonatomic, copy) NSMutableDictionary* customProperties; @end And when I try to animate the key path "customProperties.roll" using CABasicAnimation and addAnimation:forKey:, it seems that the customProperties variable doesn't get copied from the model layer to the presentation layer, and the customProperties of the presentation layer appears to be nil, failing to update the value for the key "roll". Is there a way to animate values in a dictionary correctly? What is the exact relationship between a model layer and a presentation layer while being animated? Thanks!

  Developing a multilingual application in VB.Net 2008, Im able to add resources to forms and create a multilingual forms depending on uiculture. On reading Msdn on creating the multilingual string values for messagebox contents, have added the .resource file to the project files path as specified.   Hi, On my SSAS 2008 instance if a backup/restore of any database is made to/from a UNC path I get an error : The following system error occurred from a call to GetOverlappedResult for Physical file: '\server\share\OLAPDB.abf', Logical file: '' : Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. . Server: The operation has been cancelled. (Microsoft.AnalysisServices) Creating/copying/moving a file on the share of any size on the share using explorer or the command prompt works. The most useful link I could find is : http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Development/microsoft.public.win32.programmer.kernel/2004-07/0475.html Can anyone shed more light on what could be causing this error ? • Best Practise for Writing a POS System

  Hi, I'm putting together a basic POS system in C# that needs to print to a receipt printer and open a cash drawer. Do I have to use the Microsoft Point of Service SDK? I've been playing around with printing to my Samsung printer using the Windows driver that came with it, and it seems to work great. I assume though that other printers may not come with Windows drivers and then I would be stuck? Or would I be able to simply use the Generic/Text Driver to print to any printer that supports it? For the cash drawer I would need to send codes directly to the COM port which is fine with me, if it saves me the hassle of helping clients setup OPOS drivers on there systems. Am I going down the wrong path here? Thanks, Gary

• Making the domain-model of tic tac toe

  I am trying to make the domain model of a Tic Tac Toe game. I'll try then to go on through the various steps of the Unified Process and later implement it in some language (C# or Java). I'd like to have some feedback if I'm going on the right path: I've defined the game with two actors, Player O and Player X. I'm not sure about defining both a Tile and a Tile State. Maybe I should only define a Tile and have the 3 possible states specialize from it? I'm not sure what is best: to have both Player O and Player X be associations with Tic Tac Toe or have them inherit from Player that is associated with Tic Tac Toe. Following the design shown on the pic, in theory we could have a Tic Tac Toe concept with 2 Player O's, which wouldn't be correct. What is your opinion on this? Also, am I missing something in the diagram? Although I can't see any other actors for Tic Tac Toe, should I have any other? Thanks

• Play video in UIWebView from NSData

  Hello there, Does anybody know how to play a video in a UIVebView ? The video comes from the iphone library, when I pick it, I store it in core data as binary data. If i use the local url of the video it's working fine, the problem I have is that the this url refers to a folder named "tmp", and I don't know the lifetime of it. If I can get the real url of the video file it will be ok. //attachment is the core data object containing the data NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:attachment.path]; [self.webView loadRequest:[NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url]]; I tried a solution that doesn't work: (i tried MIMETypes : "video/quicktime" and "video/mp4") [self.webView loadData:attachment.data MIMEType:@"video/mov" textEncodingName:nil baseURL:nil]; I think the second solution is the closest, and the problem comes from the MIMEType. • Getting Rails Application Running Under IronRuby Rack

  Anyone else playing with ironruby? I have successfully got the IronRuby.Rails.Example project running on my local machine under IIS 5.1. I am now attempting to get my own demo rails site running in the same way. My web.config is slightly different from the example project. I am attempting to only use what was distributed with IronRuby 1.0 and what I have installed using gems. • Simultaneously calling multiple methods on a WCF service from silverlight

  A while back I had to debug some performance issues in an existing Silverlight app, as the problem / solution was a bit obscure and finding info about it was quite tricky, I thought I’d share, maybe it can help the next person with this problem. The App On start, the app would do a number of calls to different methods on a WCF service, this to populate the UI with the necessary data. Recently one of those services had been changed and was now taking quite a bit longer than it used to. This was resulting in quite a long loading time for the whole UI, which was set up so it wouldn’t let the user interact with anything, until all the service calls had finished. First I broke out the longer running service call from the others, then removed the constraint that it had to be loaded for the UI in general to become responsive. I also added a loading indicator just on that area of the UI, thinking that the main UI would load while this particular section could keep loading independently. The Problem However this is where things started to get a bit strange. I found that even after these changes, the main UI wouldn’t activate until the long running call returned. So now, I did what I should have done to start with, I got Fiddler out and had a look at what was really happening. What I found was that, once the call to the long running service method was placed, all subsequent call were waiting for that one to return before executing. Not having really worked with WCF previously or knowing much about it in general, I was stumped… I knew of the issues where Silverlight is restricted by the browsers networking features in regards to number of simultaneous connections etc. However that just didn’t seem to be the issue here, you can clearly see in Fiddler that there’s numerous calls, but they’re just not returning. I thought of the problem maybe being in the WCF service, but the calls were really not that complicated and surely the service should be able to handle a lot more than what I was throwing at it! So I did what every developer does in this type of scenario, I hit the search engines. I did a whole bunch of searching on things like “multiple simultaneous WCF calls from Silverlight” and “Calling long running WCF services from Silverlight” etc. etc. This however, pretty much got me nowhere, I found a whole heap of resources on how to do WCF calls from Silverlight but most of them were very basic and of no use what so ever. The fog is clearing It wasn’t until I came across the term “ WCF blocking calls” and started incorporating that in my searches I started to get somewhere. Those searches quite quickly brought me to the following thread in the Silverlight forum “Long-running WCF call blocking subsequent calls” which discussed the exact problem I was facing and the best part, one of the guys there had the solution! The short answer is in the forum post and the guys answering, has also done a more extensive blog post about it called “Silverlight, WCF, and ASP.Net Configuration Gotchas” which covers it very well.  So come on what’s the solution?! I heard you ask, unless you’ve already gone to the links and looked it up ;) The Solution Well, it turns out that the issue is founded in a mix of Silverlight, Asp.Net and WCF, basically if you’re doing multiple calls to a single WCF web-service and you have Asp.Net session state enabled, the calls will be executed sequentially by the service, hence any long running calls will block subsequent ones. So why is Asp.Net session state effecting us, we’re working in Silverlight, right? We'll as mentioned earlier, by default Silverlight uses the browsers networking stack when doing service calls, hence to the WCF service, the call looks like it might as well be coming from a normal Asp.Net. To get around this, we look to a feature introduced in Silverlight 3, namely the Client HTTP Stack. The Client HTTP Stack to the rescue By using the following syntax (for example in our App.xaml.cs, Application_Startup method) WebRequest.RegisterPrefix("http://", WebRequestCreator.ClientHttp); we can set our Silverlight application to use the Client HTTP Stack, which incidentally solves our problem! By using Silverlights own networking stack, rather than that of the browser, we get around the Asp.Net - WCF session state issue. The above code specifies that all calls to addresses starting with “http://” should go through the client stack, this can actually be set more granular and you can specify it to be used only for certain domains etc. Summary The actual solution is well covered in the forum and blog posts I link to above. This post is more about sharing my experience, hopefully helping to spread the word about this and maybe make it a bit easier for the next poor guy with this issue to find the solution.   I'm looking for some options to programmatically create a Word document from within a Silverlight 4 application. I found two approaches which seemed promising at first but don't look like they will work. OpenXML SDK The OpenXML SDK isn't available for Silverlight at this time. Word Automation via COM Interop dynamic wordApplication = AutomationFactory.CreateObject("Word.Application"); Apparently this requires that the Silverlight 4 application be granted permission to run with elevated privileges, which is only available for out-of-browser applications (which ours isn't) My other thought is to hand off the request to a back-end service which doesn't have these limitations. Wanted to check for any ideas before going down that path. Thank you!

No source control -- Developers simply storing code in local filesystems and emailing code in order to integrate Design-driven Design -- The need for some developers to cram every design pattern from the Gang of Four (GoF) book into their source code All of which raises the question: If these practices are so bad, why do developers engage in them? “I've seen a wide gamut of reasons,” said Verburg, who lists them as: * They were never taught at high school/university that their bad habits were harmful.* They weren't mentored in their first professional roles.* They've lost passion for their craft.* They're being deliberately malicious!* They think software development is a technical activity and not a social one.* They think that they'll be able to tidy it up later.A couple of key confusions and misconceptions beset Java developers, according to Verburg. “With Java and the JVM in particular I've seen a couple of trends,” he remarked. “One is that developers think that the JVM is a magic box that will clean up their memory, make their code run fast, as well as make them cups of coffee. The JVM does help in a lot of cases, but bad code can and will still lead to terrible results! The other trend is to try and force Java (the language) to do something it's not very good at, such as rapid web development. So you get a proliferation of overly complex frameworks, libraries and techniques trying to get around the fact that Java is a monolithic, statically typed, compiled, OO environment. It's not a Golden Hammer!”I asked him about the keys to running a good Java User Group. “You need to have a ‘Why,’” he observed. “Many user groups know what they do (typically, events) and how they do it (the logistics), but what really drives users to join your group and to stay is to give them a purpose. • Workflows for User Profile properties

  Hi Guys, I have a requirement from a client with regards to user profile properties. The requirement is as follows: We would like to setup custom user profile properties such that these values are editable by individuals via their my site. When a user edits this user profile property value, it should not be immediately visible to other users that happen to go to the individual's my site, but rather go through an approval workflow. If the value submitted is approved the user profile property value is updated. As far as I know this is not possible. I do have a work around for this but I want to ensure that I haven't missed anything before going down this path. Thanks in Advance

• Opening a local file in Eclipse from the web

  Right now, when I notice a problem on a page on my PHP web site, I have to look at the URL, mentally deduce what file is responsible for displaying that page, then navigate the Eclipse PDT file tree to open that file. This is annoying and uses brain power that could have been applied to solving the issue instead. I would like my PHP web site to display on every page a link that I could click to automatically open the correct file in Eclipse. I can easily compute the complete absolute path for the file I need to open (for example, open C:/xampp/htdocs/controllers/Foo/Bar.php when visiting /foo/bar), and I can make sure that Eclipse is currently open with the correct project loaded, but I'm stuck on how I can have Firefox/Chrome/IE tell Eclipse to open that specific file.

• eclipse debugger: attaching source-code of maven managed libraries

  I'd like to use the source code of maven-managed dependencies when debugging our webapp in eclipse. I have managed to attach the sources to the libraries in the "Maven Managed Depedencies" classpath container, i.e. when I open a class file from a depedency (e.g. using Ctrl-Shift-T), I see the source code. However, when I launch the tomcat within eclipse, and execution halts on a breakpoint in that same class, the editor pane only displays the text "source not found", and a button to edit the "source lookup path". I have attempted to manually add the "Maven Managed Dependencies" classpath container, only to be told "Use maven project settings to configure depedency resolution". However, I see no useful setting in that property pane ... How can I attach those sources?

• Building a directory tree from a list of file paths

  I am looking for a time efficient method to parse a list of files into a tree. There can be hundreds of millions of file paths. The brute force solution would be to split each path on occurrence of a directory separator, and traverse the tree adding in directory and file entries by doing string comparisons but this would be exceptionally slow. The input data is usually sorted alphabetically, so the list would be something like: C:\Users\Aaron\AppData\Amarok\Afile C:\Users\Aaron\AppData\Amarok\Afile2 C:\Users\Aaron\AppData\Amarok\Afile3 C:\Users\Aaron\AppData\Blender\alibrary.dll C:\Users\Aaron\AppData\Blender\and_so_on.txt From this ordering my natural reaction is to partition the directory listings into groups... somehow... before doing the slow string comparisons. I'm really not sure. I would appreciate any ideas. Edit: It would be better if this tree were lazy loaded from the top down if possible.
