  • Perl daemon script for message queue hanging for 20 seconds after each process. Why?

    I have daemon script written in Perl that checks a database tables for rows, pulls them in one by one, sends the contents via HTTP post to another service, then logs the result and repeats (only a single child). When there are rows present, the first one is posted and logged immediately, but every subsequent one is delayed for around 20 seconds. There are no sleep()'s running, and I can't find any other obvious delays. Any ideas?

    Hello, in my web page a user fill a form who send information to a MySql database. One of the data inputs sent is a date/time, in the format date('l jS \of F Y h:i:s A'); (I can change the format as needed) So when the user submits the form i wanna check if the actual time/date is 30 seconds more than the sent time/date in order to allow or not the submission of the form.     It's just nonsense for me personally. I can't see any performance boost by using NoSQL instead of SQL. Maybe SQL over NoSQL, yes but not in that way. I think that if I answer "I have no idea" or something like that it will be bad answer because this doesn't really look like a fake-question, it's a serious question on interview but how should be looking correct answer on this question? Or am I missing something about NoSQL?

    At times a Database Administrator, or even a developer is required to wear a spy’s hat. This necessity oftentimes is dictated by a need to take a glimpse into a black-box application for reasons varying from a performance issue to an unauthorized access to data or resources, or as in my most recent case, a closed source custom application that was abandoned by a deserted contractor without source code. It may not be news or unknown to most IT people that SQL Server has always provided means of back-door access to everything connecting to its database. This indispensible tool is SQL Server Profiler. This “gem” is always quietly sitting in the Start – Programs – SQL Server <product version> – Performance Tools folder (yes, it is for performance analysis mostly, but not limited to) ready to help you! So, to the action, let’s start it up. Once ready click on the File – New Trace button, or using Ctrl-N with your keyboard. The standard connection dialog you have seen in SSMS comes up where you connect the standard way: One side note here, you will be able to connect only if your account belongs to the sysadmin or alter trace fixed server role. Upon a successful connection you must be able to see this initial dialog: At this stage I will give a hint: you will have a wide variety of predefined templates: But to shorten your time to results you would need to opt for using the TSQL_Grouped template. Now you need to set it up. In some cases, you will know the principal’s login name (account) that needs to be monitored in advance, and in some (like in mine), you will not. But it is VERY helpful to monitor just a particular account to minimize the amount of results returned. So if you know it you can already go to the Event Section tab, then click the Column Filters button which would bring a dialog below where you key in the account being monitored without any mask (or whildcard):  If you do not know the principal name then you will need to poke around and look around for things like a config file where (typically!) the connection string is fully exposed.   • How to reduce bubble-notification time in empathy?

    empathy shows a bubble notification message on top right corner if a user comes online or goes offline (obviously we can change them from the preferences), but is there any way we can reduce the time for which the bubble notification remains on screen. By default it remains fro 3-4 seconds, is there any way we can change it to 1 or may be 2 seconds (I know the matter is of few seconds only but 4 seconds looks too long and I want to reduce it).     I have an application with numerous WCF services that make use of LINQ-To-SQL as the data access model. I am having lots of problems with the "DataContext accessed after Dispose" exception. I understand what this exception is and that it is occurring because I have not "initialised" the data that is trying to be accessed. I've read many articles that suggest that I called ToList() on any arrays before the parent object is returned by the service. My issue is that I am getting this exception and I don't know where it is originating from and therefore I don't know what hasn't been initialised. Can anyone advise how best to identify the root cause? (I have used the MS Service Trace Viewer and this doesn't seem to give me any further information)

    Hi, I want to synchronize two SQL databases. But since one of the databases only requires a subset of the data I am looking for a filter option. Is there a possibility to add a Filter to the SyncOrchestrator or do I have to add the filter to the SyncProvider? According to this: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/uklaunch2007ado.net/thread/35d4deb8-a861-4fe3-a395-d175e14c353f it is not possible to filter with the DbSyncProvider. Quote: "I understand your scenario, and the hebavior of the DbSyncProvider is due to the current limitation. DbSyncProvider is built on top of the Microsoft Sync Framework that can support filtering. Unfortunately, DbSyncProvider does not yet." But that post is quite old, maybe that has changed now. I am working with this example at the moment: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc807255.aspx but I can't figure out how to add filtering here.

    i'm using linq-to-sql and i'm use complied linq for better performance. I have a users table with a INT field called "LookingFor" that can have the following values.1,2,3,12,123,13,23. I wrote a query to return the users based on the "lookingFor" column i want to return all users that contains the "lookingFor" value (not only those equal to it). In example if user.LookingFor = 12 , and query paramter is 1 this user should be selected. private static Func<NeDataContext, int, IQueryable<int>> MainSearchQuery = CompiledQuery.Compile((NeDataContext db, int lookingFor) => (from u in db.Users where (lookingFor == -1 ? true : u.LookingFor.ToString().Contains(lookingFor) select u.username); This WORKS on non complied linq but throws error when using complied. How do i fix it to work using complied linq? I get this error: Only arguments that can be evaluated on the client are supported for the String.Contains method.

    We are experimenting with Crystal Reports viewers such as this one: http://www.thereportviewer.com/ ... which can actually re-connect to the data source and re-run a Crystal Reports RPT file with live data. However when running the report the viewer asks for a password to connect to the data source (in this case SQL Server). Does Crystal Reports have some way of embedding a connection password into a RPT file to avoid this? Or should I be using a System DSN from the Control Panel/ODBC thing to get around this? I figure someone else must have had this problem.

  • SSIS Configuration error: Cannot retrieve configuration table schema

    I'm trying to add a simple configuration to a SSIS package, of type SQL Server, so stored in a table. At the end of the wizard, when it goes to try and write a new row to the nominated table to store the configuration it fails with the error: TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio Could not complete wizard actions. Cannot retrieve configuration table schema. (Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Wizards) I can't seem to resolve this. The configuration connection has full permissions on the table, and it sees it and can read from it as it reports there is no current data for the filter I provide. It just wont write to it. A Google search of the error message above in quotes returns literally no hits! Any suggestions? Glenn

    I read other posts on similar problem on using SingleOfDefault on Linq-To-Entity, some suggested using "First()" and some others suggested using "Extension" method to implement the Single(). This code throws exception: Movie movie = (from a in movies where a.MovieID == '12345' select a).SingleOrDefault(); If I convert the object query to a List using .ToList(), "SingleOrDefault()" actually works perfectly without throwing any error. My question is: Is it not good to convert to List? Is it going to be performance issue for more complicated queries? What does it get translated in SQL? Movie movie = (from a in movies.ToList() where a.MovieID == '12345' select a).SingleOrDefault();

  • Why does select SCOPE_IDENTITY() return a decimal instead of an integer?

    So I have a table with an identity column as the primary key, so it is an integer. So, why does SCOPE_IDENTITY() always return a decimal value instead of an int to my C# application? This is really annoying since decimal values will not implicitly convert to integers in C#, which means I now have to rewrite a bunch of stuff and have a lot of helper methods because I use SQL Server and Postgres, which Postgres does return an integer for the equivalent function.. Why does SCOPE_IDENTITY() not just return a plain integer? Are there people out there that commonly use decimal/non-identity values for primary keys?

In a search function, I need to create a Linq To Entities (L2E) query with a "where" clause that compare several strings with the data in the database with these rules : The comparison is a "Contains" mode, not strict compare : easy as the string's Contains() method is allowed in L2E The comparison must be case insensitive : I use ToLower() on both elements to perform an insensitive comparison. All of this performs really well but I ran into the following Exception : "Argument data type ntext is invalid for argument 1 of lower function" on one of my fields. It seems that the field is a NText field and I can't perform a ToLower() on that. What could I do to be able to perform a case insensitive Contains() on that NText field ?

The column name in each database is "ID" and "Value". I want to search by "ID" and return "Value". Any help is greatly appreciated.
