• Desktop forgets theme?

  I am running Ubuntu in VirtualBox (on a Windows 7 host). Several times now, the top-level menu bar, the task bar — and seemingly every system dialog — have forgotten the out-of-the-box "Ambiance" theme they conform to when I first installed the system. Window captions still preserve the theme, but pretty much nothing else does. I have searched high and low on Google for assistance with this problem. Everything I've found suggests either running some gconf reset or deleting .gconf* .gnome* and other similar directories. I have followed all this advice and nothing works. I still get a boring Windows-95-style gray 3D look and feel. On previous occasions, after much messing around I've given up and rebooted the VM instance, and been pleasantly suprised to see the original "Ambience" theme restored throughout the UI, but invariably it disappears again some time later, usually after a reboot, so I can never figure out what I did that broke it. Here's a sample from Ubuntu's site of what I want it to look like. And here's a screenshot of my system as it currently looks. Also note that my GNOME Terminals normally have a nice purple semi-translucent look, and as can be seen from the screenshot, they are now just a solid matte white. This last time (just yesterday), trying numerous combinations all the usual tricks and rebooting several times hasn't fixed it, so here I am on SU wondering: How do I recover the out-of-the-box theme for my Gnome/Ubuntu desktop, noting that blowing away all config files — as suggested in many places online — fails to achieve this? It might help to know that it seems to fail either after I resize the VM instance, forcing the Ubuntu desktop to resize itself, or after I play around with Compiz settings. I haven't been able to figure out which of these it is, and it could be neither. Given the amount of pain I have had to go through to get things back to normal (and given that I am at a loss as to how to do so), it has proven difficult to definitively isolate the cause.

  I had to remove some file headers in a bigger project which were all of the form #region File Header /*[ Compilation unit ----------------------------------------------------------       Name            : Class1.cs       Language        : C#     Creation Date   :      Description     : -----------------------------------------------------------------------------*/ /*] END */ #endregion I know that would be a cool thing to write a simple C# program use a recursive file search, read all lines skip the first n lines and write the files back to disc. But I wanted to test things first before I ruin my source files with one little typo. There comes the Visual Studio Search and Replace in Files dialog into the game. I can test my regular expression to do a multiline match with the Find button before actually breaking anything. And if something goes wrong I have the Undo button.   There is a nice blog post from Paulo Morgado online who deals with Multiline Regular expressions. The Visual Studio Regular expressions are non standard so you have to adapt your usual Regex know how to the other patterns. The pattern I cam finally up with is \#region File Header:b*(.*\n)@\#endregion The Regular expression can be read as \#region File Header Match “#region File Header” \# Escapes the # character since it is a quantifier. :b* After this none or more spaces or tabs can follow (:b stands for space or tab) (.*\n)@ Match anything across lines in a non greedy way (the @ character makes it non greedy) to prevent matching too much until the #endregion somewhere in our source file. \#endregion Match everything until “#endregion” is found I had always knew that Visual Studio can do it but I never bothered to learn the non standard Regex syntax. This is powerful and it is inside Visual Studio since 2005!

• Nautilus file share for multiple users is not working. Only owner gets access.

  I have always had trouble setting up samba shares with ubuntu. In the past I've tried getting it to work by configuring /etc/samba/smb.conf but never achieved what I wanted. Last time I managed to get it working by making a share with nautilus built in file sharing (which utilises samba). Now when I try do it again I doesn't work. (running ubuntu 10.10 Desktop x64) What I'm trying to achieve is a share which is available for multiple users (those who are in the same group) and not just the owner (who also is included in the group). As it is now I can connect with only the owner, the others are getting an error when I try to connect with windows 7. All the users are within the same group and the folder permissions are 770. The files and folders have the correct group settings. I think there is no restrictions in the User Settings for the other users blocking them and I marked "make available to other users (or whatever it says)" in the file sharing dialog. What can I do?

• Config import on network-manager-openvpn

  I'm trying to use a free service using the OpenVPN protocol using OpenVPN's GUI module in the network manager. The config worked perfectly well as .ovpn on Windows. The behavior in Windows is such that I ran OpenVPN GUI and chose to connect to this particular VPN. It would then show the activity in the attempt to connect and opens a dialog box for username/password authentication. I've successfully imported all the configurations by changing the file type to .conf and using the import feature in network manager. However, attempting to connect would simply display the network manager's attempting to connect animation, but ultimately end with a notification of connection timing out. • Oracle JDK 7u10 released with new security features

  A few days ago, we released JRE and JDK 7 update 10. This release adds support for the following new platforms: Windows 8 on x86-64. Note that Modern UI (aka Metro) mode is not supported. Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) This release also introduces new features that provide enhanced security for Java applet and webstart applications, specifically: The Java runtime tracks if it is updated to the latest security baseline. If you try to execute an unsigned applet with an outdated version of Java, a warning dialog will prompt you to update before running the applet. The Java runtime includes a hardcoded best before date. It is assumed that a new version will be released before this date. If the client has not been able to check for an update prior to this date, the Java runtime will assume that it is insecure and start warning the user prior to executing any applets. The Java control panel now includes an option to set the desired security level on a low-medium-high-very high scale, as well as an option to disable Java applets and webstart entirely. This level controls things such as if the Java runtime is allowed to execute unsigned code, and if so what type of warning will be displayed to the user.   I am trying to install a multifunctional printer Laserjet M1212nf MFP on Ubuntu 12.04. I downloaded and install the hplip indicated by the official web site. At the end of the installation I chose reboot the whole system and next I call hp-setup in the terminal (as normal user and then as root). After select in the dialog box my printer I got the following error: Searching...   I just bought a Logitech M555b Bluetooth mouse today. My computer (a Macbook Pro 8,2) has a bluetooth connection, and it works perfectly fine on Mac OSX (I set up a new device, click the connect button on the mouse, and voilà, done in 5 seconds). I cannot get it to work on Ubuntu 12.04. When I follow the same steps as on Mac OSX under Ubuntu 12.04, Sometimes I will see the mouse name appearing for 1 second on the screen, and if I'm fast enough to click on "Continue", I will have a message telling me the pairing with my mouse failed. Here are the steps I follow: Turn off Bluetooth on Ubuntu Turn Bluetooth on. Bluetooth icon Set up new device... Turn on the mouse, and press the Connect button. Press "Continue" on the Bluetooth New Device Setup screen I see the mouse name for one second, but then it disappear. Click on PIN options... to select '0000'. ... nothing, Ubuntu won't see anything. • My card reader doesn't show up at all, but previously did in 10.10

  I bought a pin-based-USB powered internal media card reader and it worked perfectly when I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 a month ago. I used it a few times since and today I booted up the computer and it's not working. Here's how it used to work: In nautilus->computer, 5 "drives" would display even when no card was inserted. One for each slot (SD, XD, CF/MS, etc). Opening one w/o a card would initiate a "Please insert card." dialog. Inserting a card would automatically open nautilus. • Cannot authenticate to SBS 2003

  I am trying to connect my machine to my work's entirely windows network and I am having a few issues: Whenever I try to access the server, the authentication dialog just keeps popping back up. I cannot connect to the printers (it says connecting to device failed) I have tried setting up samba, winbind, kerberos, likewise open all to no avail. I have a feeling I am just setting them up wrong. My nautilus shows this when I go to Network Windows Network MASTERMAGNETS I can ping both MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL and 192.168.0.2 after modifying my /etc/hosts james@jamesmaddison:~$ cat /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost jamesmaddison 192.168.0.2 MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL 192.168.0.50 Sharp-Printer # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters I believe that's the correct domain (not sure if that's the correct term) as when I do nslookup MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL I get the following: james@jamesmaddison:~$ nslookup MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL Server: 192.168.0.2 Address: 192.168.0.2#53 Name: MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL Address: 192.168.0.3 Name: MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL Address: 192.168.0.2 It all worked fine before I reinstalled Ubuntu and now I just cannot get access to the server. All help is appreciated, I need to get this working or I fear I will be forced to develop in a windows environment :(

• Unity throws SynchronizationLockException while debugging

  I've found Unity to be a great resource for writing unit-testable code, and tests targeting it. Sadly, not all those unit tests work perfectly the first time (TDD notwithstanding), and sometimes it's not even immediately apparent why they're failing. So I use Visual Studio's debugger. I then see SynchronizationLockExceptions thrown by Unity calls, when I never did while running the code without debugging. I hit F5 to continue past these distractions, the line that had the exception appears to have completed normally, and I continue on to what I was trying to debug in the first place.In settings where Unity isn't used extensively, this is just one amongst a handful of annoyances in a tool (Visual Studio) that overall makes my work life much, much easier and more enjoyable. But in larger projects, it can be maddening. Finally it bugged me enough where it was worth researching it.Amongst the first and most helpful Google results was, of course, at Stack Overflow. The first couple answers were extensive but seemed a bit more involved than I could pull off at this stage in the product's lifecycle. A bit more digging showed that the Microsoft team knows about this bug but hasn't prioritized it into any released build yet. SO users jaster and alex-g proposed workarounds that relieved my pain--just go to Debug|Exceptions..., find the SynchronizationLockException, and uncheck it. As others warned, this will skip over SynchronizationLockExceptions in your code that you want to catch, but that wasn't a concern for me in this case. Thanks, guys; I've used that dialog before, but it's been so long I'd forgotten about it.Now if I could just do the same for Microsoft.CSharp.RuntimeBinder.RuntimeBinderException... Until then, F5 it is.

• Handy Tool for Code Cleanup: Automated Class Element Reordering

  You're working on an application and this thought occurs to you: "Wouldn't it be cool if I could define rules specifying that all static members, initializers, and fields should always be at the top of the class? And then, whenever I wanted to, I'd start off a process that would actually do the reordering for me, moving class elements around, based on the rules I had defined, automatically, across one or more classes or packages or even complete code bases, all at the same time?" Well, here you go: That's where you can set rules for the ordering of your class members. A new hint (i.e., new in NetBeans IDE 7.3), which you need to enable yourself because by default it is disabled, let's the IDE show a hint in the Java Editor whenever there's code that isn't ordered according to the rules you defined: The first element in a file that the Java Editor identifies as not matching your rules gets a lightbulb hint shown in the left sidebar: Then, when you click the lightbulb, automatically the file is reordered according to your defined rules. However, it's not much fun going through each file individually to fix class elements as shown above. For that reason, you can go to "Refactor | Inspect and Transform". There, in the "Inspect and Transform" dialog, you can choose the hint shown above and then specify that you'd like it to be applied to a scope of your choice, which could be a file, a package, a project, combinations of these, or all of the open projects, as shown below: Then, when Inspect is clicked, the Refactoring window shows all the members that are ordered in ways that don't conform to your rules: Click "Do Refactoring" above and, in one fell swoop, all the class elements within the selected scope are ordered according to your rules.

• My First Post with Windows Live Writer

  I receive daily newsletters from DotNetSlackers regarding various .NET topics.  Today I read an article from an apparent Microsoft employee who gave some insight to the organizational culture within the company.  Always on the lookout for new tools and technologies I noted that he used Windows Live Writer for editing and managing his blog content.  I thought I’d give it a try. Let’s try adding a picture and adjusting it’s placement within this blog post relative to this text. … Adding the image is quite simple using the “Insert” options given to the right of the blog content editor.  Inserting without using a table makes aligning text just so impossible, but that’s inherent with any WYSIWYG editor.  Instead using a table with at least 2 columns (1 for text and 1 for the image) works best.   Let’s try adding a map!   That’s pretty sweet!  You can map to any location within the editor itself.  A dialog opens which utilizes Bing! allowing you to enter the address, etc. Well, that’s enough for me.  Time to pimp this to my wife for use on our family blog.  BTW, Windows Live Writer allows you to post content to a number of blogging sites…fantastic!!!
