• Idea for a physics–computer science joint curriculum and textbook

  (I apologize in advance if this question is off topic or too vague) I want to write (and have starting outlining) a physics textbook which assumes its reader is a competent computer programmer. Normal physics textbooks teach physical formulas and give problems that are solved with pen, paper and calculator. I want to provide a book that emphasizes computational physics, how computers can model physical systems and gives problems of the kind: write a program that can solve a set of physics problems based on user input. Third party open source libraries would be used to handle most of the computation and I want to use a high-level language like Java or C#. Besides the fact I'd enjoy working on this, I think a physics-computer science joint curriculum should be offered in schools and this is part of a large agenda to make this happen. I think physics students (like myself) should be learning how to use and leverage computers to solve abstract problems and sets of problems. I think programming languages should be thought of as a useful medium for engaging in many areas of inquiry. Is this an idea worth pursuing? Is the merger of these two subjects in the form of an undergraduate college curriculum feasible? Are there any specific tools I should be leveraging or pitfalls I should be aware of? Has anyone heard of college courses or otherwise that assume this methodology? Are there any books/textbooks out there like the one I'm describing (for physics or any other subject)?

• Escaping Generics with T4 Templates

  I've been doing some work with T4 templates lately and ran into an issue which I couldn't find an answer to anywhere.  I finally figured it out, so I thought I'd share the solution. I was trying to generate a code class with a T4 template which used generics The end result a method like: public IEnumerator GetEnumerator()             {                 return new TableEnumerator<Table>(_page);             } the related section of the T4 template looks like this:  public IEnumerator GetEnumerator()             {                 return new TableEnumerator<#=renderClass.Name#>(_page);             } But this of course is missing the Generic Syntax for < > which T4 complains about because < > are reserved. using syntax like <#<#><#=renderClass.Name#><#=<#> won't work becasue the TextTransformation engine chokes on them.  resulting in : Error 2 The number of opening brackets ('<#') does not match the number of closing brackets ('#>')  even trying to escape the characters won't work: <#\<#><#=renderClass.Name#><#\<#> this results in: Error 4 A Statement cannot appear after the first class feature in the template. Only boilerplate, expressions and other class features are allowed after the first class feature block.  The final solution delcares a few strings to represent the literals like this: <#+    void RenderCollectionEnumerator(RenderCollection renderClass)  {     string open = "<";   string close =">"; #>    public partial class <#=renderClass.Name#> : IEnumerable         {             private readonly PageBase _page;             public <#=renderClass.Name#>(PageBase page)             {                 _page = page;             }             public IEnumerator GetEnumerator()             {                 return new TableEnumerator<#=open#><#=renderClass.Name#><#=close#>(_page);             }         } <#+  }  #> This works, and everyone is happy, resulting in an automatically generated class enumerator, complete with generics! Hopefully this will save someone some time :)

• Dim an Overly Bright Alarm Clock with a Binder Divider

  Love your alarm clock but hate how eye-searingly bright it is? Slice up a plastic binder divider to dim your alarm clock (or any other aggressively bright monochromatic display). At DIY site Curbly Chris Job shares a simple alarm clock hack. For years he had an alarm clock with a nice dim display. When it broke he went in search of a replacement but failed to find one that wasn’t . His solution came in form of a sliced up binder divider (the clear, usually tinted, plastic tabs you put in between paper in a binder). He sliced to fit the display, spritzed it with a little water to help it cling to the plastic, and pressed it in place. The plastic dims the display enough–as seen in the before/after picture above–that he doesn’t need to cover it up to get a good night’s sleep. • ASP.NET Meta Keywords and Description

  Some of the ASP.NET 4 improvements around SEO are neat.  The ASP.NET 4 Page.MetaKeywords and Page.MetaDescription properties, for example, are a welcomed change.  There’s nothing earth-shattering going on here – you can now set these meta tags via your Master page’s code behind rather than relying on updates to your markup alone.  It isn’t difficult to manage meta keywords and descriptions without these ASP.NET 4 properties but I still appreciate the attention SEO is getting.  It’s nice to get gentle reminder via new coding features that some of the more subtle aspects of one’s application deserve thought and attention too.  For the record, this is how I currently manage my meta: <meta name="keywords"     content="<%= Html.Encode(ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["Meta.Keywords"]) %>" /> <meta name="description"     content="<%= Html.Encode(ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["Meta.Description"]) %>" /> All Master pages assume the same keywords and description values as defined by the application settings.  Nothing fancy. Nothing dynamic. But it’s manageable.  It works, but I’m looking forward to the new way in ASP.NET 4.

At PyroElectro Projects they wanted to try something new with the whole electronics-in-mint-container genre. They opted to turn a container of Ice Breakers Frost mints (the Ice Breakers response to Altoid Mints, presumably) into a small FM bug. The most clever part of the design is that the container still holds mints. • Refactoring in domain driven design

  I've just started working on a project and we're using domain-driven design (as defined by Eric Evans in Domain-Driven Design: Tackling Complexity in the Heart of Software. I believe that our project is certainly a candidate for this design pattern as Evans describes it in his book. I'm struggling with the idea of constantly refactoring. I know refactoring is a necessity in any project and will happen inevitably as the software changes. However, in my experience, refactoring occurs when the needs of the development team change, not as understanding of the domain changes ("refactoring to greater insight" as Evans calls it). I'm most concerned with breakthroughs in understanding of the domain model. I understand making small changes, but what if a large change in the model is necessary? What's an effective way of convincing yourself (and others) you should refactor after you obtain a clearer domain model? After all, refactoring to improve code organization or performance could be completely separate from how expressive in terms of the ubiquitous language code is. Sometimes it just seems like there's not enough time to refactor. Luckily, SCRUM lends it self to refactoring. The iterative nature of SCRUM makes it easy to build a small piece and change and it. But over time that piece will get larger and what if you have a breakthrough after that piece is so large that it will be too difficult to change? Has anyone worked on a project employing domain-driven design? If so, it would be great to get some insight on this one. I'd especially like to hear some success stories, since DDD seems very difficult to get right. Thanks!

• How do you research while pair programming?

  I've recently started at a new job and pairing has helped me become effective there very quickly. I am, however, having a hard time when we must do brief joint research during our workflow, covering API features, code examples, or command options. My team lead urges us to do all research on our pairing station, rather than our individual laptops, and to synchronize our research by verbally negotiating the steps between different web resources. I research, read, and absorb information differently from my pairing partner, and I feel much more productive when I can follow a thread of research to the next web page exactly when I want to, rather than trying to keep exact pace and place with what my partner's reading. We're both smart and fast, but we can't help moving in different ways and instantaneous velocities when we're figuring stuff out. It seems so much easier to poke around individually for a minute until one of us says "I've got it," then get back together and code. When you pair program, how do you handle short research tasks? What works best for you, and how to you keep in sync with your partner?

  We had a very interesting .NET meeting in which i gave a short presentation on the new features of .NET 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010. The main presentation came from Jake Markhus @jmarkhus who talked about NHibernate (http://nhforge.org).   The membership for the group is growing each time we meet and its very encouraging. Some employers found candidates within our group for hiring, and this has resulted in a mutual benefit between the employers and job-seekers – really cool stuff.   Jake above giving us the soup and nuts of NHibernate. We were very excited since a number companies decided to support us in many ways. Some members won the licenses for Telerik Suite (http://www.telerik.com) while Intellisense LTD (http://www.intellisense.co.ug) agreed to sponsor us on domain registration and hosting of the community site. • Clarity of the cloud with Microsoft Learning Experience.

    while waiting for the Superbowl, I thought I would write this..... 2014 will not only see the release of a new version of SQL Server, but also accompanying this is the release of courses and certification tracks from Microsoft Learning Experience – formerly Microsoft Learning -- that will support the education of SQL Server and related technologies. The notable addition in the curriculum, is substantial material on cloud and big data features that pertain to data and business intelligence. There are entire module/chapters that are dedicated Power BI, SQL Azure and HDInsight. Certifications and courses from Microsoft can get stick – sometimes fair and sometimes unfairly. Whilst I am a massive advocate of community to get information and education. Microsoft’s new courses will bring clarity to the burning topics of the moment and help you to understand the capabilities of Power BI and HDInsight. From a business intelligence perspective there will be three courses: 20463C: Data warehousing in SQL Server 2014 20466C: data models and reports in SQL Server 2014 20467A: Designing Self-Service Business Intelligence and Big Data Solutions These are not the exact titles of the course, but will be confirmed prior to the release. And if you have already completed the SQL Server 2012 or 2008 curriculum, there is an upgrade course from 10977A: Upgrading business intelligence skills from 2008 to 2014. • Remastered King’s Quest Games Offer Classic Gaming on Modern Machines

  If you were a fan of the King’s Quest series of adventure games from the 1980s and 1990s, you’ll be thrilled to see them remastered with enhanced graphics, polished voice acting, and more. Gaming studio AGD Interactive has been engaged in a multi-year project to remaster and freely release the classic King’s Quest games. They started with King’s Quest I in 2001, moved on to King’s Quest II, and just recently released King’s Quest III (see in the screenshot above). The gameplay for all three games is excellent and really captures the feel of the original games (with better graphics, quality voice acting, and adjustments made for modern computers). When you run the game you first get a small pre-launch console. There you can make adjusts to the game before launching it. We’d recommend you enable the pixel doubling filter. It make the game a little blockier (hey you are playing a 1980s remake!) but it fills up high resolution monitors more effectively.   Introduction Have you ever experienced the challenge to map both your functional and technical assets in one software package? Finding a software package that is able to describe the metadata about these assets and their mutual relationships? And if you found the correct software package, was it maintainable? The Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) is a powerful SOA repository. Its core task is to map and visualize the interaction between technical assets generated by the SOA Suite and OSB. However, OER can be configured to not only contain these technical assets, but also to contain functional assets, i.e.: functional designs, use cases and a logical data model. Now that’s interesting! OER is able to show all the assets in your system and, if necessary, zoom in on one of the assets and their mutual relationships (Figure 1). • Platform Builder: PBWorkspaces CESysgen.bat Not Used?

  One of the things that I like about Windows CE is that I am always learning new things, but in this case it is a bit disturbing. We working with Multi UI (MUI) this week and discovered some problems with Windows CE 5.0 and Chinese language support. These problems don’t exist in CE 6.0. The problem was that in the batch files in Public\CEBASE\oak\misc, specifically weceshellfe.bat, some of the shell components needed are only included if certain LOCALs are selected. English is not one of them, I suppose this is because someone didn’t think that we would ever use them and English – doh. No problem, just work around this in PBWorkspaces\<workspace>\WINCE500\<BPS>\cesysgen.bat. But that didn’t work. After a lot of trial and error, what I determined is that this cesysgen.bat isn’t actually used by Platform Builder any more.  Instead, in that same folder is a <workspace>.bat file that is called by Public\CEBASE\oak\misc\cesysgen.bat. That leads to some new problems though, but solvable, in that what I really wanted to do was add a fix after the batch files in CEBASE run, but <workspace>.bat runs before the other batch files in CEBASE. So what I finally came up with was to add the fix to the PASS2 handling in <workspace>.bat. Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

• .NET 4.5 now supported with Windows Azure Web Sites

  This week we finished rolling out .NET 4.5 to all of our Windows Azure Web Site clusters.  This means that you can now publish and run ASP.NET 4.5 based apps, and use  .NET 4.5 libraries and features (for example: async and the new spatial data-type support in EF), with Windows Azure Web Sites.  This enables a ton of really great capabilities - check out Scott Hanselman’s great post of videos that highlight a few of them. Visual Studio 2012 includes built-in publishing support to Windows Azure, which makes it really easy to publish and deploy .NET 4.5 based sites within Visual Studio (you can deploy both apps + databases).  With the Migrations feature of EF Code First you can also do incremental database schema updates as part of publishing (which enables a really slick automated deployment workflow). Each Windows Azure account is eligible to host 10 free web-sites using our free-tier.  If you don’t already have a Windows Azure account, you can sign-up for a free trial and start using them today.
