• FTP error 424 failed to establish connection

  Getting "ftp error 425 failed to establish connection" when trying to connect to ftp server. Tried 2 ftp clients on 3 machines on same network and none work. However FTP works from home / mobile broadband. No ip blocks on ftp sever. Other ftp servers(differrent ip/hosts) work okay. firewall setup correct, no ports blocked. Is it possible to use a proxy for ftp a i think it's something with the ISP but taking too long to fix?

• What is Cloud Computing?

  This is a question that we discuss quite often at Edentity.  It’s one of those things, kind of like “web services” where the terminology has been thrown around by a ton of people and means a lot of different things. Here’s my favorite diagram so far, which is a visual breakdown of the material presented here by NIST, visualized by the folks at Cloud Security Alliance.     What I like about this diagram is that is shows several different ways that we can differentiate our definitions of cloud computing, from the essential characteristics, or which “Broad Network Access" and “On-Demand Self-Service” (which often are used on their own to define cloud computing) are but a couple of things that help make something “cloud”. The most important section from my point of view is the middle one – the Service Models.  This represents the different ways that cloud computing can be exposed from the ground up.  It can be an Infrastructure, a Platform or a piece of Software that an end user interacts with. • reverse nslookup fails for single machine

  I have a computer on a windows Active Directory network for which reverse dns lookup fails. It doesn't matter which machine runs the lookup. • Migrate wireless settings from xp to windows 7

  I'm trying to migrate the settings of my old machine (Win XP Professional) to the new one (Win 7 Professional) and I would like to keep my saved passwords for various wireless networks. How can I export them from XP and import in Win7? A few things that are mentioned a lot in chat groups but don't work: netsh can export/import wlan profiles on Vista/Win7, but not on XP; the Wireless Network Setup Wizard can only export settings for networks created by me; the best method I found was via http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_wep_key_faq.html which can list hex keys, but cannot load them nor save them in a useful format; I would rather not copy them one-by-one by hand.

• Why do my gvfs mounts not show up under ~/.gvfs?

  From what I read, when mounting a network share via nautilus or gvfs-mount the mount point should be in ~/.gvfs. This seems not to be the case for me: I tried mounting both an FTP and SMB share via both nautilus and gvfs-mount under both Ubuntu Maverick and Natty and in none of the cases did I see any mount point under ~/.gvfs. I can access the shares just find in nautilus, but I want to have access via the command line, which is why I need a mount point in the file system. Edit: Debugging following James Henstridge's answer and enzotib's comment revealed that on my laptop gvfs-fuse-daemon is running and consequently gvfs mounts show up in ~/.gvfs, whereas on the 2 workstations where ~/.gvfs remained empty gvfs-fuse-daemon was not running. On all 3 machines there are other gvfs processes running: gvfsd, gvfs-afc-volume-monitor, ... On the laptop, mount | fgrep gvfs yields gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/xxx/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon (rw,nosuid,nodev,user=xxx) That raises the questions: How are shares mounted without gvfs-fuse-daemon running? Is there no mount point created in that case and is every access to the share a gvfs library call? Which daemon is responsible? gvfsd? What's the role of gvfs-fuse-daemon? Does it only create a fuse mount point in ~/.gvfs?

• Corsair Hackers Reboot

  It wasn't easy for me to attend but it was absolutely worth to go. The Linux User Group of Mauritius (LUGM) organised another get-together for any open source enthusiast here on the island. Strangely named "Corsair Hackers Reboot" but it stands for a positive cause: "Corsair Hackers Reboot Event A collaborative activity involving LUGM, UoM Computer Club, Fortune Way Shopping Mall and several geeks from around the island, striving to put FOSS into homes & offices. The public is invited to discover and explore Free Software & Open Source." And it was a good opportunity for me and the kids to visit the east coast of Mauritius, too. Perfect timing It couldn't have been better... Why? Well, for two important reasons (in terms of IT): End of support for Microsoft Windows XP - 08.04.2014 Release of Ubuntu 14.04 Long Term Support - 17.04.2014 Quite funnily, those two IT dates weren't the initial reasons and only during the weeks of preparations we put those together. And therefore it was even more positive to promote the use of Linux and open source software in general to a broader audience. Getting there ... Thanks to the new motor way M3 and all the additional road work which has been completed recently it was very simple to get across the island in a very quick and relaxed manner. Compared to my trips in the early days of living in Mauritius (and riding on a scooter) it was very smooth and within less than an hour we hit Centrale de Flacq. Well, being in the city doesn't necessarily mean that one has arrived at the destination. But thanks to modern technology I had a quick look on Google Maps, and we finally managed to get a parking behind the huge bus terminal in Flacq. From there it was just a short walk to Fortune Way. The children were trying to count the number of buses... Well, lots and lots of buses - really impressive actually. What was presented? There were different areas set up. Right at the entrance one's attention was directly drawn towards the elevated hacker's stage. Similar to rock stars performing their gig there was bunch of computers, laptops and networking equipment in order to cater the right working conditions for coding/programming challenge(s) on the one hand and for the pen-testing or system hacking competition on the other hand. Personally, I was very impresses that actually Nitin took care of the pen-testing competition. He hardly started one year back with Linux in general, and Kali Linux specifically. Seeing his personal development from absolute newbie to a decent Linux system administrator within such a short period of time, is really impressive. His passion to open source software made him a living. Next, clock-wise seen, was the Kid's Corner with face-painting as the main attraction. Additionally, there were numerous paper print outs to colour. Plus a decent workstation with the educational suite GCompris. Of course, my little ones were into that. They already know GCompris since a while as they are allowed to use it on an IGEL thin client terminal here at home. To simplify my life, I set up GCompris as full-screen guest session on the server, and they can pass the login screen without any further obstacles. And because it's a thin client hooked up to a XDMCP remote session I don't have to worry about the hardware on their desk, too. The next section was the main attraction of the event: BYOD - Bring Your Own Device Well, compared to the usual context of BYOD the corsairs had a completely different intention. Here, you could bring your own laptop and a team of knowledgeable experts - read: geeks and so on - offered to fully convert your system on any Linux distribution of your choice. And even though I came later, I was told that the USB pen drives had been in permanent use. From being prepared via dd command over launching LiveCD session to finally installing a fresh Linux system on bare metal. Most interestingly, I did a similar job already a couple of months ago, while upgrading an existing Windows XP system to Xubuntu 13.10. So far, the female owner is very happy and enjoys her system almost every evening to go shopping online, checking mails, and reading latest news from the Anime world. Back to the Hackers event, Ish told me that they managed approximately 20 conversion during the day. Furthermore, Ajay and others gladly assisted some visitors with some tricky issues and by the end of the day you can call is a success. While I was around, there was a elderly male visitor that got a full-fledged system conversion to a Linux system running completely in French language. A little bit more to the centre it was Yasir's turn to demonstrate his Arduino hardware that he hooked up with an experimental electrical circuit board connected to an LCD matrix display. That's the real spirit of hacking, and he showed some minor adjustments on the fly while demo'ing the system. Also, very interesting there was a thermal sensor around. Personally, I think that platforms like the Arduino as well as the Raspberry Pi have a great potential at a very affordable price in order to bring a better understanding of electronics as well as computer programming to a broader audience. It would be great to see more of those experiments during future activities. And last but not least there were a small number of vendors. Amongst them was Emtel - once again as sponsor of the general internet connectivity - and another hardware supplier from Riche Terre shopping mall. They had a good collection of Android related gimmicks, like a autonomous web cam that can convert any TV with HDMI connector into an online video chat system given WiFi. It's actually kind of awesome to have a Skype or Google hangout video session on the big screen rather than on the laptop. Everyone was pretty busy during the whole day LUGM: The hacking competition, here pen-testing a wireless connection and access point between multiple machines LUGM: Well prepared workstations to be able to 'upgrade' visitors' machines to any Linux operating system Final thoughts Gratefully, during the preparations of the event I was invited to leave some comments or suggestions, and the team of the LUGM did a great job. The outdoor banner was a eye-catcher, the various flyers and posters for the event were clearly written and as far as I understood from the quick chats I had with Ish, Nadim, Nitin, Ajay, and of course others all were very happy about the event execution. Great job, LUGM! And I'm already looking forward to the next Corsair Hackers Reboot event ... • can connect to wifi router but not the internet 12.10

  I believe i have tried every trick in the book ! I am able to access my router from my ubuntu desktop but not even a single site on the internet. i have installed the drivers for my pci wifi card following this procedure : http://steveswinsburg.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/how-to-install-a-d-link-dwa-525-wireless-network-card-in-ubuntu-10-04/ Earlier it didn't connect to the internet and kept prompting me for the password. after i installed the driver it got connected ! but now i cant access the internet and can only access my router. i deleted the resolv.conf file. I have also tried the "rkill" command and it shows it is unlocked. I have even tried pinging the ip's 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 and i get replies from both. I have also added them on my wifi configuration setup on ubuntu desktop. I am new to ubuntu but learning fast :-) These are the things i don't like about ubuntu, the simple tasks are difficult for a person coming from windows. I am using ubuntu 12.10. please reply at the earliest i would be very thankful.

• I Blame SNMP!

  Anyone who has been reading my blog would have noticed that I have deviated slightly from my original post plan! This post was meant to be on uploading files in Silverlight, so what happened you may ask? Well last weekend I had some friends over for a LAN and one of them brought a managed switch with, which he had just been purchased for work. He proceeded show me how cool it was, how he planned on improving his work network and how it can be monitored remotely via SNMP. After this explanation he started to google for a free SNMP graphing tool. After a few hours of hearing disgruntled mutterings from him I asked what was wrong, he proceeded to rant about how he couldn’t find any tools that suited his needs. It was at this point I though the most dangerous thing a programmer can ever think “I wonder how hard it would be to make one”, of course the answer at the time is always “It can’t be that hard”, and so started my journey into SNMP. I am still in the early stages of this journey so I don’t have to much to report yet, but once I have finished the first version of my SNMP graphing tool I will definitely be posting about it! For now if there are any of you who are interested in doing any SNMP development in C# I would recommend looking at the #Sharp project on CodePlex (http://sharpsnmplib.codeplex.com/), it is the SNMP library I have decided to use and thus far it works beautifully.

• 1Gigabit vs 1.25Gibabit mismatch

  I need to re-connect the network to a small old outbuilding that hasn't been used in several years. I have to use the existing 62.5um multi-mode fiber run. This end of the fiber is already connected. For the end in the building, I was looking at this pair: http://www.tp-link.com/products/productDetails.asp?class=switch&content=spe&pmodel=TL-SM311LM http://www.tp-link.com/products/productDetails.asp?class=&content=spe&pmodel=TL-SL2210WEB If you look at the sfp first (first link), it's listed at 1.25Gpbs. That's odd, because IIRC the fiber should really only do 1Gbps. It's also supposed to work with the switch I posted (2nd link), but the gbic port on the switch also only shows 1Gbps. What am I missing here?

  Hello all, quick question. I'm a software guy and networking is all black magic to me! I have a laptop which I use at home and at the office. In order to be able to more easily reference our servers at work, I have our domain name in the DNS suffixes on my TCP/IP settings on my wireless connection. This all works beautifully and I can reference our servers simply by name only. Now the problem... When I go home, it still has those suffixes in there, and I cannot access other servers because it appends the DNS suffixes to the server names. Is there a way I can set up DNS suffixes so that they are only applied when connected to a certain wireless network (I'm thinking by SSID).

• Group policy issues

  We are having an issue on one of our clients relatively new sbs installs. The domain consists of a single SBS 2011 server with 4 windows 7 clients and 3 xp clients. Most of the time everything is fine however roughly every 3 days windows 7 clients start timing out when trying to receive computer group policy. This results in hour long delays before getting to the login screen in the morning. This is accompanied by event ID 6006, win login errors stating it took 3599 seconds to process policy. Once they've booted they can log in without issue however gpupdate fails again on computer policy and gpresult comes back with access denied, even when run as domain admin... At this point if we restart the server the network is fine for 3 days. I thought perhaps it might be ipv6 or smb2, but disabling ipv6 on the clients doesn't help and the clients can browse the sysvol folder freely on smb2 anyway. Does anyone have any ideas or routes I can take to further diagnose the issue? Thanks in advance :)

  I recently encountered a problem getting a headache, need help... System consists of: Two subsystems, called A, B (each running on a standalone tomcat instance), currently running on the same machine. A invoke B's service via spring httpInvoker(http). B system also invoke other system's services via http. Symptoms: 1, the system starts to run normally after 10-15 days; 2, the system will run for a period of time after an exception: org.springframework.remoting.RemoteAccessException: Could not access HTTP invoker remote service at [http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/remoting/call]; nested exception is java. net.SocketException: Permission denied: connect 3, when the exception occour, it continues, not only occasional .(it looks like some resources exhausted, but cpu rate < 5%, memory < 15%, network < 5%) 4, A, B when the system call fails, B system via http call to an external service also failed for the same exception. 5, closed two tomcat services, restart, and working properly. So repeatedly (step 1 - 5), has not found the root reason. Emvironment: windows 2008 R2 tomcat7.0.42 x86_64 oralce-jdk-1.7.0_40 Any ideas?

• unable to access shared drives n win7

  OK, this is doing my head in. Not your usual Win7 sharing problem. Just built a win 7 comp to go onto my home lan and be accessed by all on the network, mostly running XP SP3. Installed it as a single HD+DVD system, got it happy, then added my storage drives, set them up in the right order and letters, rebooted, and shared them. Couldn't access the computer at all from any XP machine. Set the pasword thingy in win7 to NO, and now I can "see" all four shared drives from any machine, but can access only two of them. Please tell me whats going on as I've done nothing different from one drive to the other, just installed and set up drive letters as normal, then shared the damn things. The odd thing about it? the two 1.5T drives that have a lot of data on board are accessable, the two nearly empty 500G ones are not. ANY ideas? Cheers, Colin

This is the rule that forward all 80 traffic to my squid3.1 server at DMZ DNAT loc:!10.0.0.126 dmz:172.16.0.198:3128 tcp 80 - !172.16.0.198 Ok, I need to add more ips to avoid transparent proxy. I tried loc:!10.0.0.134,!10.0.0.126...but didnt work (also similars like [ip0,ip1]. I tried to google the answer cant find it (sorry no matches, not searching the right keywords) also I tried to read the docs, but they are really long (and indexes dont help me). Thanks!

• Can I force NFS automounts to use NFSv3?

  I have a linux server that is exporting NFSv4 as well as NFSv3. I have a Fedora14 client that is defaulting to NFSv4 when automounting NFS shares off of the linux server, and it seems to be causing some problems. All my other linux clients on the network are mounting via NFSv3 without issue, so is there a way I can tell automount to mount the share via v3? I am pulling my automount maps via LDAP, with an entry in my /etc/auto.master file like so: +auto_master, so I assume it's a bit different than listing options with a regular automount map? (.i.e. /home --nfsvers=3 fileserver:/DATA)

• How to secure Firefox traffic (+DNS) through SOCKS proxy under Ubuntu 10.04?

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, and starting a SOCKS proxy with 'ssh -D', and setting Ubuntu to use it with "System - Preferences - Network Proxy". Firefox uses the proxy, and the proxy's IP appears when I visit a site like http://www.whatismyip.com/. My question is, is Firefox resolving DNS requests through this proxy? Is my web-browsing truly secure? (That is, until I exit the other end of the proxy. I know it's insecure after that.) (And I've verified the keys, I'm not being man-in-the-middled) (And--screw it. You know what I mean. Is it resolving DNS requests through the proxy?) I don't know how I would go about verifying such a thing for myself. Using additional hardware such as another debugging proxy is not an option. If Firefox isn't resolving my DNS requests through the SOCKS proxy, how do I go about fixing it?

• My HP-Vista based laptop has become very slow recently

  My HP laptop which has Vista Home premium. When I try to start Firefox, internet explorer, it becomes very slow. No other app. When i checked the Performance in Task Manager. It shows the Physical memory , Free as 0 bytes, almost always. This has been recently. Earlier it didn't used to be zero. Laptop has 2GB of RAM. I have nothing running in my tray except - Sound control, Laptop power plan indicator,Network status indicator. There are no other processes whose memory usage adds up to so high to make Free memory as 0. Then what could be hogging the memory and make the laptop very slow. Any pointers would help as it is crawling at the moment.

• Win 7 laptop taking a long time to log on when off the domain

  I've clicked through on a few forums but unable to find a suggestion for this issue. I have a user with a HP laptop which will boot perfectly fine whilst connected to the network but at home it will take 4 minutes to log on. Some suggestions I have had is that its looking for the DNS server of the domain. Another was that it was suggested it was a roaming profile (it isn't). So hoping someone has encountered Windows 7 acting like this and has some suggestions. The other users on this domain don't have the issue and its a mix of XP and Win 7 client PCs.
