  I have Entity Framework (.NET 4.0) going against SQL Server 2008. The database is (theoretically) getting updated during business hours -- delete, then insert, all through a transaction. Practically, it's not going to happen that often. But, I need to make sure I can always read data in the database. The application I'm writing will never do any types of writes to the data -- read-only. If I do a dirty read, I can always access the data; the worst that happens is I get old data (which is acceptable). However, can I tell Entity Framework to always use dirty reads? Are there performance or data integrity issues I need to worry about if I set up EF this way? Or should I take a step back and see about rewriting the process that's doing the delete/insert process?

  Just wondering if there is a way to take some of the repitition out of a LINQ to SQL projected type. Example: Table: Address Fields: AddressID, HouseNumber, Street, City, State, Zip, +20 more Class MyAddress: AddressID, HouseNumber, Street (Only 3 fields) LINQ: from a in db.Addresses select new MyAddress { AddressID = a.AddressID, HouseNumber = a.HouseNumber, Street = a.Street } The above query works perfectly, and I understand why something like this will return all 20+ fields in each row: from a in db.Addresses select new MyAddress(a); class MyAddress { public MyAddress(Address a) { this.AddressID = a.AddressID, this.HouseNumber = a.HouseNumber, this.Street = a.Street } } Which leads me to my Question: Is it possible to implement some kind of helper function or extension method to "map" from the LINQ model to MyAddress yet only return the necessary fields in the query result rather than all of the fields?

  I have a folder where files are going to be dropped for importing into my data warehouse. \\server\share\loading_area I have the following (inherited) code that uses xp_cmdshell shivers to call out to the command shell to run the DIR command and insert the resulting filenames into a table in SQL Server. I would like to 'go native' and reproduce this functionality in SSIS. Thanks in advance guys and girls. • SQLCe local db in temp- path in connectionstring?

  Hi, I have SQL Ce db in my app, which is included in my app directory. While debugging its OK, but when published and run with setup.exe, it retrieves "file not found" in temporary directory the app is ran from. I would like to run from standard location, but I dont know how to change it. I am using this string: SqlCeConnection connection = new SqlCeConnection("Data Source=database.sdf;Persist Security Info=False;"); When I run setup.exe, the app never starts, stating that in its temporary directory the db file was not found. When I run app.exe, it works. I do not understand it...:( EDIT: I can see that in the VS project settings, there is connection string and there is "Data Source=|DataDirectory|\Database.sdf" The path should be something like local directory?   I have a web application made for several groups of people not connected with each other. Instead of using one database for all of them, I'm thinking about making separate databases. This will improve the speed of the queries and make me free from checking to what group the user belongs. But since I'm working with LINQ to SQL, my classes are explicitly connected with the databases, so I will have to make separate DataContexts for all of the databases. So how can I solve this problem? Or should I just not bother and use one database only?

  Hello, I'd like to get the value of the id column for an object just after I've created it. But I don't want to run another query for that. My book for beginner (SQL Server 2008 for Dummies) says that there are 2 tables (inserted and deleted) that hold the last row(s) that have been inserted, updated, or deleted. Unfortunately, only Triggers (says the book) can access those tables. But, if I use triggers, they will go off each time I "insert" a row even when I don't need them that functionality. Can I obtain the same effect with a Store Procedure (without having to run a separate query?)   I have a couple of tables that are joined by GUIDs in SQL Server. Now, I've found a few custom fields to add support for GUIDs in django, but I tend to shy away from using code in blog posts if at all possible. I'm not going to do anything with the GUID other than join on it and maybe assign a GUID on new entries (although this is optional). Is there any way to allow this using django's built-in types? Like can I use some kind of char field or binary field and "trick" django into joining using it? If it's any help, I'm using django-pyodbc.

  Postgres is getting quite annoying lately. I have checked the documentation provided by Oracle and found a way to do this without dropping the table. Problem is, it errors out at modify as it does not recognize the keyword. Using EMS SQL Manager for PostgreSQL.   Hi all, I have a sql query which is executing a LEFT JOIN on 2 tables in which some of the columns are ambiguous. I can prefix the joined tables but when I try to prefix one of the columns from the table in the FROM clause, it tells me Unknown column. I even tried giving that table an alias like so ...From points AS p and using "p" to prefix the tables but that didn't work either. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong.   My firm was delivered a 20+ GB .sql file in reponse to a request for data from the gov't. I don't have many options for getting the data in a different format, so I need options for how to import it in a reasonable amount of time. I'm running it on a high end server (Win 2008 64bit, MySQL 5.1) using Navicat's batch execution tool. It's been running for 14 hours and shows no signs of being near completion. Does anyone know of any higher speed options for such a transaction? Or is this what I should expect given the large file size? Thanks

  I have a SSIS package that I am programming and my script component won't allow null column inputs. I have checked the box to keep nulls in the flat file source component. My program is running well until my script component where I get the error "The column has a null value" (super vague, I know). The column currently throwing the error is an "int" valued column and is used for aggregations in my script. I could make the null values 0s or to say "NULL" but I'd prefer to just leave them blank.   Hi all, I have a set of data that contains garbled text fields because of encoding errors during many import/exports from one database to another. Most of the errors were caused by converting UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1. Strangely enough, the errors are not consistent: the word 'München' appears as 'München' in some place and as 'MÃœnchen'. Is there a trick in SQL server to correct this kind of crap? The first thing that I can think of is to exploit the COLLATE clause, so that ü is interpreted as ü, but I don't exactly know how. If it isn't possible to make it in the DB level, do you know any tool that helps for a bulk correction? (no manual find/replace tool, but a tool that guesses the garbled text somehow and correct them)

Only for one record, the result is very strange. For this record ColumnA=2010-04-23 08:00:00 ColumnB=2010-04-22 17:00:00 It would display kpi_r, it displayed kpi_y. I have checked the value of DateDiff(d,Fields!ColumnA.Value,Fields!ColumnB.Value) in the SSMS, the value is -1. Why does it display kpi_y? Does anyone meet this problem before? Best Regards,

  I'm writing reports on SQL Server Reporting Server that have a number of hours grouped by, say, user, and a total calculated based on the sum of the values. Currently my query runs a stored proc that returns the hours as in HH:MM format, rather than decimal hours, as our users find that more intuitive. The problem occurs when I try and add up the column using an SSRS expression, because the SUM function isn't smart enough to handle adding up times in this format. Is there any way to: Display a time interval (in minutes or hours) in HH:MM format while having it calculated in decimal form? Or split up and calculate the total of the HH:MM text values to arrive at a total as an expression? I'd like to avoid having to write/run a second query just to get the total.
