  When I write programs I using pass by value or pass by reference always seem to be logical methods. When learning about different programming languages I came across pass by name. Pass by name is a parameter passing method that waits to evaluate the parameter value until it is used. See Stack Overflow pass by name question for more information on the method. What I would like to know is: what are some good examples and/or reasons to use pass by name and should it be re-introduced into some more modern languages.

  Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say? • What is a right datatype in C++ for OpenGL scene representation with use of GLSL

  I am programming in C++ OpenGl with GLSL. Until now I have been using a data structure that is composed of std::vector filled with structures of vertexes and with their parameters (position , normal, color ...) as a global variable for all the code. My question is, as I am using VBOs for drawing - is this a good approach to this problem? I am asking because I happen to have a lot of memory related trouble with this structure. I am trying to generate a terrain with a lot of vertices - more than 1 million. This seems to work, but as I refill the buffer I get memory related issues (crushes that occur, more or less randomly). So again the question is, is this a good data structure to use / and look for the faults in my code, or should I change to something else? Or what data structure would be advisable?

  I have an experience in Java language and in JEE related Framework for about 5 years. In these 5 years i have worked on Core java, Spring, Hibernate, JPA, Struts 1. Now just to be prepared for the near future, i am thinking to learn some new programming language or some new technology, this will help me out to be a more elligible employee. So my question to you is, which new technology or language should i learn, my target is for next 3 years. So just in case if Java fades out (thought it won't) than i can jump on to this newly learned stuff. Where should i start from ? Should i learn some other language in JVM like Scala, Clojure, Groovy, JRuby ? Or should i learn some altogether different language like Python or Erlang, Perl ?   In some computer master program online application, it says: Please list the programming languages in which you have written programs. For each language, indicate the length in lines of the longest working program you have written in that language. You may approximate, but only count those parts of the program that you wrote yourself. I don't quite remember that, and I have never counted the lines of each program. Do programmers always know approximately how many lines in each of his programs, and keep record of them? What is the relation between " lines of the longest working program " in a language and familiarity with it? Typically, how many lines will indicate the programmer being excellent, good, fair, or unfamiliar with the language? Is knowing "lines of the longest working program" really helpful?

  Is C# a good choice for ubuntu programming? E.g unity, or applications that will run on ubuntu? Am I doing good wanting to learn C# when I'm determined to stick with ubuntu and develop on it or for it? If not, can you give me reasons why? And which languages would be better than c# for ubuntu development? I already know c, c++, java(basics), php, mysql, python(basics). I like to learn new stuff, but stuff that worth my time. Does C# worth my time? If c# worth my time, here's what I have done and what I need: I installed all mono packages I could find on the ubuntu standard repositories. Now I want a good tutorial to get me started. I'm a complete noob with c# so a basic tutorial and how to compile run under ubuntu 12.04 would be great.

  I have some free time on my hands and I was thinking about learning a new language. I do not plan to use it in my day-to-day job, but I rather want to expand my way of thinking to get a better sense where the dev world is heading from a language perspective and to don't get stuck in my way when programming by rather try new approaches. I was thinking either a functional language, like Haskell or F# (which is a bit more 'pragmatic from a .NET dev standpoint) or something dynamic (like Python, that in my oppinion has nicer syntax than Ruby). What can you recommend that is enjoyable, at least a bit practical, but most of all, new (from a c# dev perspective). I appreciate any answers.

  What are some famous programs or video games that were written in the following languages? C C++ Java Python I'm asking this particularly so I know how powerful impact did those languages have on our lives. I believe Windows was also written in C/C++ but I'm not sure if fully. Also if you are kind enough you can mention some other language impacts besides programs/video games. These languages are by far the most common so that's why I've picked them. Besides the impact on our lives I'd also like to see the power these languages have. I'm studying programming and I've learned bits of all those languages and I think if I knew some famous examples of programs written in those languages I could understand the power of them, as well as inspire me further in my career.

• All windows decorations disappear after I maximize any window

  When I maximize some of the windows all decorations disappear (by all, I mean on all windows)... Is that common issue on Unity or I'm just unlucky to have some prone to that bug configuration? Anyone have idea how to fix this? It won't fix after unmaximize. It seems like maximazing window simply crashes window decorator. Decoration isn't displayed for all existing windows and any new ones. Only way I found to fix this is to run compiz --replace (but this ruins current windows placement - all windows end up on same desktop). It happens almost every time I maximize window.

  I'm hoping there's a book or something out there for me to get... If I have a class that has Collection as an instance variable, what is that method of coding called? A design pattern? If so, where can I find more information on it? As I've been working with this mentor, he's really helped me understand my programming weakness and that weakness is thinking in terms of collections or relationships between objects. It just seems so difficult for me right now and I need to read to become smarter. • Is it OK to live without knowing how the program you created works?

  I mean, there are really useful libs that can solve problems when you are stuck and do not know how to solve this or that with your knowledge of programing language you use... For example, Boost for C++ or JQuery for JavaScript or Spring for Java... They solve problems in seconds and you do not really care how they did it (despite that they are written in the very same language you are programming in)... So I wonder am I alone use libs not being capable to write solutions for my problems from scratch or its standard practice?

  I have a friend who has the specific problem of building a case against the use of a custom HTML <wrapper> tag in some site's markup. Now, intuitively we can answer that use of such a tag is risky, as future HTML specs may define a wrapper tag with semantics that conflict with its use on the site. We can also appeal to a particular section of the HTML5 spec which also recommends against the use of custom tags for this reason. And while I agree with the conclusion, I find these arguments a little on the weak side, on their own. Is there some well grounded and proven theory in computer science from which we can derive this conclusion? Have programming language theorists created proofs about the properties of vocabulary versioning, or some such thing?

What does a logic programming language bring to the table with respect to NLP? Is the declarative nature of prolog used to define grammars? Is it used to define associations between words? That is, somehow mine logical relationships between words (this I imagine would be pretty hard to do)? Any examples of what prolog uniquely brings to NLP would be highly appreciated.

  I want to make a particle explosion, after something gets destroyed, but somehow only one line of mixed colors show up on the screen. PS: "Uint32 delta" is needed to update the pixels based on time. PSS: Maybe I should add that it's programmed in C and includes SDL. EDIT: Found the problem. It was the "drawParticles" function. The problem was, that I passed a double to "offset" (as particles[i].x, etc are all doubles). So I ended up with values like ~MAX_INT because I didn't cast the doubles properly to ints.

  I am considering buying a new computer with Windows 7 (64-bit) pre-installed. Would it be possible to install Ubuntu (preferably 64-bit) dual-boot on such a machine, and then, using VirtualBox / VMWare, etc. under Ubuntu, make a virtual machine that "points to" the existing Windows 7 OS (without making a copy of it)? Just to be clear... at the end of this process: I would have a machine that dual-booted both Windows 7 (64-bit) and Ubuntu (64-bit). If I choose to boot Ubuntu, I would then have the possibility of running a visualization of Windows 7 within Ubuntu. There would only be 1 copy of Windows 7 on the hard disk.

  I want to make an iPhone game and I was wondering if somebody could point me to some resources. Before you rage and close this, I am not looking for just a tutorial on programming, I could just google that. I need to find a tutorial on how to actually make a game, as in how to organize your code, what type of methods to run in separate threads, how to manage these threads in a game, etc. I already know everything I need; I can write a physics engine from scratch, I can write a 3D graphics pipeline from scratch, and so on. What I cannot figure out is how to combine all of this knowledge into correctly and efficiently making a game. Obviously for this one would probably go to college, but seeing as I am still in high school, that is not an option. If anyone would know some tutorials or resources, any pointers would be appreciated.

  I'm very confused about choosing the programming langage to follow in the next step of my life. I'm right now so familiar with C++, VB.NET and PHP, but to jump to a higher level I must choose between JEE(JSP, Servlets, JSF, Spring, EJB, Struts, Hibernate,...) and .NET(ASP.NET, C#). Because I cant learn them at the same time. And you realize that, when I mentioned JEE a lot of things comes to the head. In my personnal experience I prefere the .NET, but Java seems to be a better choice. believe me, i'm not writing a subjective topic. I just want to know what must I follow to get succes in my life. The question here is : Is there any things that can be done with Java, and cannot be done with .NET.   A newbie here. I am trying to set up Eclipse for Linux Kernel Programming. The guide says set the project location as the root directory of the kernel. Where's the root directory of the kernel now? According to Linux file hierarchy system, it lists /lib as the root directory for shared libraries and kernel modules. I also see /lib32 and /lib64. However, I tried proceeding selecting /lib as the location and eclipse doesn't allow me to create the project.
