• What's your advise on a potential legal suit? [closed]

  I [xxx app developer] received an email from Apple that a developer [of yyy app] believes I am "infringing their copyright." Description of Issue: [xxx developer] copied my application (my application is [yyy]) feature by feature. Even their donation model is completely copied from my application. Their first release was significantly later than mine, which implies copying of the application rather than parallel development. I suffered significant financial losses because of their actions, in additional to promotion problems as many people are confused with their product. My advertising was based around the idea of a "free [yyy] application for an iPhone" and they have just taken that as a title for their application. I would appreciate if someone takes a look at their release schedule and compare it to my releases. Additionally, please take a look at their functionality and how it point by point copies the functionality of my older releases. I am asking Apple to remove their application from the App Store, and ban them from resubmitting it. Thank you for your time! [yyy developer], the developer of the [yyy] application. My response was: The code of [xxx] is written by myself, using Apple public API. The graphics elements are designed by myself. The user interface and app control are independently designed and different from other [similar type] apps (please judge yourself). In-app Purchase is iOS Apple standard API. iAd is Apple iOS standard API. I don't think features can be owned exclusively. In fact, my app comes with fewer features, as I prefer minimalist design. I don't think idea can be owned exclusively. Apple responded: Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, Apple cannot serve as arbiter for disputes among third parties. Please contact [yyy developer] directly regarding your actions. You can reach [yyy developer] through: [...]. We look forward to confirmation from both parties that this issue has been resolved. If this issue is not resolved shortly, Apple may be forced to pull your application(s) from the App Store. Then I sent my response above to [yyy developer]. [yyy developer] then asked me "to provide (my) legal address and contact details that (his) lawyer requires to file a copyright infringement suit." IMO, I don't think the [yyy developer]'s claim on "feature by feature" copy is valid. I have fewer features, completely different user interface design. However, I don't think I can afford a legal action for an app of so little financial return. So what's your advise on this? Should I just let Apple pull my app?   In my bash scripts I have been using something like: until fping -u google.com; do echo "$0[$$] Network/DNS down?? $(date)" 1>&2 && sleep $(($RANDOM%(1 + ++trynum * 1) +1)).222; done to test for online connectivity. It halts in place, sleeping growing random intervals, until it can ping google.com again. Problem: At some sites ICMP pings are blocked altogether, and web pages are still reachable. What's a short way to test for this general case? Based on that test I will switch over to an http-based test like the exit status of curl -s google.com >/dev/null if that is a good one.

• Using XML in a Flex Website to Improve SEO

  Hi, I've got a Flex 3 site called www.brainpinata.com that's a trivia game. Basically, everything in the site is pulled from a database-- the questions, choices, and answers. So, unfortunately, Google doesn't index my content. So, I'm trying to think of ways to improve the situation: A) If I took my database data and put it in an XML file which was in the website's root directory, would this work? Would it violate any Google policy? (The info would be the same as in the db-- so nothing shady.) Would I have to "wire" the XML into my site or would it be enough to just have the XML sitting in the root directory? B) Another idea is to use the noscript tag and load the XML content there. As I understand it Google indexes content that people who have Javascript turned off would see. I know Flex/Actionscript 3, and unfortunately, I don't know how to load XML content with HTML. Does anyone know of an example where a Flex site uses XML for the noscript content? Thank you. -Laxmidi

  I've been researching this on google for literally 3 weeks, racking my brain and still not quite finding anything. I can't believe this is so elusive. (I'm a complete beginner so if my terminology sounds stupid then that's why.) I have a database in mysql/phpmyadmin on my web host. I'm trying to create a front end that will allow a user to specify criteria for querying the database in a way that they don't have to know sql, basically just combo boxes and checkboxes on a form. Then have this form 'submit' a query to the database, and show the filtered tables. I've tried google fusion tables - doesn't filter right with numerical data or empty cells in rows, can't relate tables I've tried DataTables.net, can't filter right with numerical data and can't use SQL without a bunch of indepth knowledge, not even sure it can if you have that.. I've looked into using jQuery with google spreadsheets, doesn't work at all either I have no idea how I'm supposed to build a front end with my database. Every place that looks promising (like zohocreator) is asking for money, and is far too simplified to be able to do the LIKE criteria or SELECT DISTINCT stuff.

• How to represent a tree structure in NoSQL

  I'm new to NoSQL and have been playing around with a personal project on the MEAN stack (Mongo ExpressJs AngularJs NodeJs). I'm building a document editor of sorts that manages nodes of data. Each document is actually a tree. I have a CRUD api for documents, to create new trees and a CRUD api for nodes in a given document. Right now the documents are represented as a collection that holds everything, including nodes. The children parent relationship is done by ids. So the nodes are an map by id, and each node has references to what nodes are their children. I chose this "flat" approach because it is easier to get a node by id from a document. Being used to having a relation table between nodes and documents, a relation table between nodes and children nodes I find it a bit weird that I have to save the entire "nodes" map each time I update a node. Is there a better way to represent such a data type in NoSQL?

• Representing and executing simple rules - framework or custom?

  I am creating a system where users will be able to subscribe to events, and get notified when the event has occured. Example of events can be phone call durations and costs, phone data traffic notations, and even stock rate changes. Example of events: customer 13532 completed a call with duration 11:45 min and cost $0.4 stock rate for Google decreased with 0.01% Customers can subscribe to events using some simple rules e.g. When stock rate of Google decreases more than 0.5% When the cost of a call of my subscription is over $1 Now, as the set of different rules is currently predefined, I can easily create a custom implemention that applies rules to an event. But if the set of rules could be much larger, and if we also allow for custom rules (e.g. when stock rate of Google decreses more than 0.5% AND stock rate of Apple increases with 0.5%), the system should be able to adapt. I am therefore thinking of a system that can interpret rules using a simple grammer and then apply them. After som research I found that there exists rule-based engines that can be used, but I am unsure as they seem too complicated and may be a little overkill for my situation. Is there a Java framework suited for this area? Should we use framework, a rule engine, or should we create something custom? What are the pros and cons?

• Java2Days 2012 Trip Report

  Java2Days 2012 was held in beautiful Sofia, Bulgaria on October 25-26. For those of you not familiar with it, this is the third installment of the premier Java conference for the Balkan region. It is an excellent effort by admirable husband and wife team Emo Abadjiev and Iva Abadjieva as well as the rest of the Java2Days team including Yoana Ivanova and Nadia Kostova. Thanks to their hard work, the conference continues to grow vigorously with almost a thousand enthusiastic, bright young people attending this year and no less than three tracks on Java, the Cloud and Mobile. The conference is a true gem in this region of the world and I am very proud to have been a part of it again, along with the other world class speakers the event rightfully attracts. It was my honor to present the first talk of the conference. It was a full-house session on Java EE 7 and 8 titled "JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond". The talk was primarily along the same lines as Arun Gupta's JavaOne 2012 technical keynote. I covered the changes in JMS 2, the Java API for WebSocket (JSR 356), the Java API for JSON Processing (JSON-P), JAX-RS 2, JCache, JPA 2.1, JTA 1.2, JSF 2.2, Java Batch, Bean Validation 1.1 and the rest of the APIs in Java EE 7. I also briefly talked about the possible contents of Java EE 8. My stretch goal was to gather some feedback on some open issues in the Java EE EG (more on that soon) but I ran out of time in the short format forty-five minute session. The talk was received well and I had some pretty good discussions afterwards. For the demo, I converted the well-known DDD sample application (http://dddsample.sourceforge.net/) written mostly in Spring 2 and Hibernate 2 to Java EE 6. My eventual plan is to make the code available via a top level java.net project. Even despite the broad topic and time constraints, the talk went very well. It was a full house, the Q & A was excellent and one of the other speakers even told me they thought this was the best talk of the conference! • Merging multiple top-level domains into a single domain

  My client had multiple top-level-domains. Each one represented an insurance program within a specific vertical. For all the sites at these alternate domains, there was a 30/70 mix of duplicate vs. original content. Some of the alternate domains ranked very well for their target keyphrase groups, where others were absent in results pages. We advised the client to merge multiple domains into their existing main domain, for usability and SEO reasons. We recently ran the merger. Here was our process: On the main domain, transfer the content such that it matches 1-for-1 content on the various alternate domains Setup Google Webmaster Tools on the main domain Push the new content on the main domain live and submit a corresponding sitemap to Google Establish 301 redirects on the alternate domains, such that each alternate domain URL points to its respective page on the main domain We did this 12 days ago, and pages (previously on the alternate domains) that had ranked well on Google have now plummeted or are entirely non-existent. Did we do the right thing by merging multiple top-level domains into a single domain? Is this initial dip in rankings normal? How soon should we expect to see it return to its normal rankings?

• What's the best practice for async APIs that return futures on Scala?

  I have started a project to write an async PostgreSQL driver on Scala and to be async, I need to accept callbacks and use futures, but then accepting a callback and a future makes the code cumbersome because you always have to send a callback even if it is useless. Here's a test: "insert a row in the database" in { withHandler { (handler, future) => future.get(5, TimeUnit.SECONDS) handler.sendQuery( this.create ){ query => }.get( 5, TimeUnit.SECONDS ) handler.sendQuery( this.insert ){ query => }.get( 5, TimeUnit.SECONDS ).rowsAffected === 1 } } Sending the empty callback is horrible but I couldn't find a way to make it optional or anything like that, so right now I don't have a lot of ideas on how this external API should look like. It could be something like: handler.sendQuery( this.create ).addListener { query => println(query) } But then again, I'm not sure how people are organizing API's in this regard. Providing examples in other projects would also be great.

• Integrating eBay and PayPal inventory

  Say I have an item for sale on eBay, and the same item for sale on another site via PayPal. Is it possible to have sales on one site reflected in the inventory for the other site, and vice-versa? In other words, if I have ten items for sale, and I buy one on either site, it should show that there are nine items left on both sites. I know that PayPal has an API for setting the inventory level of an item associated with a button. eBay also has an API for controlling an item's inventory. I'm wondering if anyone has tried to integrate them.

• How do I handle having too many links on a webpage because of my menu

  I am developing a website that has a drop-down menu at the top of it. The Menu has around 100 links in it that are repeated on every page. Every page also has some number of links below the Menu that may or may not be in the menu itself. My issue is that Google says they generally don't like pages with more than 100 links on them. Is there any way to change the links on the menu so that they no longer "count" towards my max of 100 links? It seems like there should be an easy way to do this but their really doesn't seem to be. the rel=nofollow still counts towards the number of links on the page at least according to Google, so what other options do I have? I looked into where the 100 comes from and I found that it used to be here: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769#2 but that is no longer the case. I found a more definitive and frankly muddier answer here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/questions-answers-with-googles-spam-guru from Matt Cutts from 2007. Long story short, in 2007 they still felt 100 links was a good number but they stated you could go far beyond that. In fact, they said that pages with high PageRank could have 2-300. It did sound like having many links could reduce the PageRank of the page with all of the links or possibly all of the items linked to. Also, I know IIS7's SEO 1.0 toolkit suggests that pages should have no more than 250 links.

Architecture The following figure represents a high-level overview of the system's desired features: The most basic usage would be as follows: The user visits a web site. The system presents a map (having regions, cities, and buildings). The user drills-down on the map to a particular building. The system provides a basic CRUD interface. The user can view and modify information about personnel (e.g., their assigned teams), equipment (e.g., network appliances), applications, and the building itself (e.g., contact and phone numbers). Ideally, all the components should be open-source (or otherwise free). Problem This must be a small project that needs a quick (but functional) prototype, mostly to confirm whether or not such a system would be useful in the long term. Questions What software components would you use to quickly develop a working prototype? What open-source solutions already exist, if any? • Informing Googlebot for deprecated pages

  I publish timetables in my website. For example last year I published Number 2 bus Summer 2013 timetable. I has pretty good ranking on Google SERPs for number 2 bus timetable But this year I added a new page with the name "Number 2 bus Summer 2014 timetable". When users search number 2 bus timetable in Google, they find 2013 timetable in first page of SERPs. But I want them to find 2014 timetable. Thy can reach 2014 page with the keywords number 2 bus timetable 2014. But most of the users doesn't write year name. So what's the proper way to say Googlebot that 2013 page is deprecated and newer version is 2014 page ? I created a link from 2013 page to 2013 page and added a deprecation alert for visitors. But I still see 2013 timetable in first page of Google SERPs. Of course it is possible to 301 redirect, 2013 page to 2014 page. But I want users to reach old pages to compare the differences between years. (As you would guess I have many pages like this.) Edit: Why I don't put timetables on same page and show different years' timetables with sorting. Because my old pages has good pagerank scores or SERPs. Removing these old page will remove them.

• Where does Windows 8 put the exe of the default browser for Modern UI?

  I was trying to some hack with Win-8 and I found something which is really gonna out my mind. When I set the default browser to the IE then its icon become Modern UI and I can't see the option Open file location at the bottom when I select it by right click. But if I don't set it default then it became a desktop version icon and show up the option when I select it. Same is for the Google Chrome when I checked it. IE icon when it is not set to default, I can see the option open file location. Google Chrome icon when it is set to default. Google Chrome of desktop version when it is set to default. So my question is where does Modern UI keep exe of the default browser? And why the default browser has Modern UI icon and non-default browser has desktop version icon.

• Can not access Internet (DNS names do not resolve) after update today

  I have been using Precise for a few weeks now for work with no problem. Today, I am not able to access any website using either wired or wireless connections. I installed the updates today which included nautilus, xserver, and a new kernel (3.2.0-24). After restarting I no longer was able to browse the Internet using firefox or chrome. Trying to ping google in terminal gives ping: unknown host google.ca I have tried: Connecting to wireless or wired networks (both working on other machines) Restart the machine and boot with previous Kernel Manually configure opendns on my wired connection Restart the network and the laptop and the wireless card Without any success so far. I am not sure where to go next. Please let me know the cause of the issue or help me troubleshoot it. Note that the laptop does receive an ip address, and it can ping ip address of google.ca (74.125.127.94) but not the domain name, or any domain name for that matter. This system was upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 more two weeks ago.
