  • Python: How efficient is subtring extraction?

    - by Cameron
    I've got the entire contents of a text file (at least a few KB) in string myStr. Will the following code create a copy of the string (less the first character) in memory? myStr = myStr[1:] I'm hoping it just refers to a different location in the same internal buffer. If not, is there a more efficient way to do this? Thanks!

  • If I can ping my DB server, is my SQL Server connection guaranteed to work?

    - by Matt
    If I can ping my DB server, is my SQL Server connection guaranteed to work? I am using a default connection string in my code. My program runs fine locally but overseas sites are having issues and I am wondering if SQL might be using a TCP or UDP port that is still blocked. Here is the connection string "Data Source=xxxx.xxxx.com; Initial Catalog = xxxxx; User ID=xxxxx;password=xxxxx"

  • How to properly test Hibernate length restriction?

    - by Cesar
    I have a POJO mapped with Hibernate for persistence. In my mapping I specify the following: <class name="ExpertiseArea"> <id name="id" type="string"> <generator class="assigned" /> </id> <version name="version" column="VERSION" unsaved-value="null" /> <property name="name" type="string" unique="true" not-null="true" length="100" /> ... </class> And I want to test that if I set a name longer than 100 characters, the change won't be persisted. I have a DAO where I save the entity with the following code: public T makePersistent(T entity){ transaction = getSession().beginTransaction(); transaction.begin(); try{ getSession().saveOrUpdate(entity); transaction.commit(); }catch(HibernateException e){ logger.debug(e.getMessage()); transaction.rollback(); } return entity; } Actually the code above is from a GenericDAO which all my DAOs inherit from. Then I created the following test: public void testNameLengthMustBe100orLess(){ ExpertiseArea ea = new ExpertiseArea( "1234567890" + "1234567890" + "1234567890" + "1234567890" + "1234567890" + "1234567890" + "1234567890" + "1234567890" + "1234567890" + "1234567890"); assertTrue("Name should be 100 characters long", ea.getName().length() == 100); ead.makePersistent(ea); List<ExpertiseArea> result = ead.findAll(); assertEquals("Size must be 1", result.size(),1); ea.setName(ea.getName()+"1234567890"); ead.makePersistent(ea); ExpertiseArea retrieved = ead.findById(ea.getId(), false); assertTrue("Both objects should be equal", retrieved.equals(ea)); assertTrue("Name should be 100 characters long", (retrieved.getName().length() == 100)); } The object is persisted ok. Then I set a name longer than 100 characters and try to save the changes, which fails: 14:12:14,608 INFO StringType:162 - could not bind value '12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890' to parameter: 2; data exception: string data, right truncation 14:12:14,611 WARN JDBCExceptionReporter:100 - SQL Error: -3401, SQLState: 22001 14:12:14,611 ERROR JDBCExceptionReporter:101 - data exception: string data, right truncation 14:12:14,614 ERROR AbstractFlushingEventListener:324 - Could not synchronize database state with session org.hibernate.exception.DataException: could not update: [com.exp.model.ExpertiseArea#33BA7E09-3A79-4C9D-888B-4263314076AF] //Stack trace 14:12:14,615 DEBUG GenericDAO:87 - could not update: [com.exp.model.ExpertiseArea#33BA7E09-3A79-4C9D-888B-4263314076AF] 14:12:14,616 DEBUG JDBCTransaction:186 - rollback 14:12:14,616 DEBUG JDBCTransaction:197 - rolled back JDBC Connection That's expected behavior. However when I retrieve the persisted object to check if its name is still 100 characters long, the test fails. The way I see it, the retrieved object should have a name that is 100 characters long, given that the attempted update failed. The last assertion fails because the name is 110 characters long now, as if the ea instance was indeed updated. What am I doing wrong here?

  • Auto-generating toString Method

    - by Gordon
    Is it good or bad practice auto-generating toString methods for some simple classes? I was thinking of generating something like bellow where it takes the variable names and produces a toString method that prints the name followed by it's value. private String name; private int age; private double height; public String toString(){ Formatter formatter = new Formatter(); return formatter.format("Name: %s, Age: %d, Height %f", name, age, height).toString(); }

  • How to search for alphanumeric word before or after a keyword in perl?

    - by aliocee
    I have sentences as shown in the below examples: $sen1 = "The quick brown fox jump KEYWORD over123 the3 lazy dog, fox is quick"; $sen2 = "The quick brown fox jump123 KEYWORD over the lazy dog, fox is quick"; i want to use the keyword 'KEYWORD' as my search string to extract the alphanumeric words before and after the search string using Perl regular expression. sample output: over123 jump123 NB: The word 'the3' is left out because i'm only searching for alphanumeric words exactly before or after the 'KEYWORD'. Thanks

  • How Do I Convert Pipe Delimited to Comma Delimited with Escaping

    - by Russ Bradberry
    Hi, I am fairly new to scala and I have the need to convert a string that is pipe delimited to one that is comma delimited, with the values wrapped in quotes and any quotes escaped by "\" in c# i would probably do this like this string st = "\"" + oldStr.Replace("\"", "\\\\\"").Replace("|", "\",\"") + "\"" I haven't validated that actually works but that is the basic idea behind what I am trying to do. Is there a way to do this easily in scala?

  • Easy to get a test file into JUnit

    Can somebody suggest an easy way to get a reference to a file as a String/InputStream/File/etc type object in a junit test class? Im going to decrypt a plaintext with two keys. As you see in the picture were have one encrypted file wich contains KEY1(128 bytes),KEYIV(128 bytes),key2(128bytes) wich is not used in this case then we have the ciphertext. The error I get here is "Exception in thread "main" java.security.InvalidAlgorithmParameterException: Wrong IV length: must be 16 bytes long. but it is 64 bytes." • When are references declared in a switch statement?

    - by sandis
    To my surprise this code works fine: int i = 2; switch(i) { case 1: String myString = "foo"; break; case 2: myString = "poo"; System.out.println(myString); } But the String reference should never be declared? Could it be that all variables under every case always are declared no matter what, or how is this resolved?

  • Me.Invoke in VB.NET doesn't actually "Invoke" - threads stall on Invoke statement

    - by rwmnau
    I've got the following code: Public Delegate Sub SetStatusBarTextDelegate(ByVal StatusText As String) Private Sub SetStatusBarText(ByVal StatusText As String) If Me.InvokeRequired Then Me.Invoke(New SetStatusBarTextDelegate(AddressOf SetStatusBarText), StatusText) Else Me.labelScanningProgress.Text = StatusText End If End Sub The problem is that, when I call the "SetStatusBarText" sub from another thread, InvokeRequired is True (as it should be), but then my threads stall on the Me.Invoke statement - pausing execution shows them all just sitting there, not actually invoking anything. Any thoughts about why the threads seem to be afraid of the Invoke?

  • php regular expression help finding multiple filenames only not full URL

    - by jason
    I am trying to fix a regular expression i have been using in php it finds all find filenames within a sentence / paragraph. The file names always look like this: /this-a-valid-page.php From help i have received on SOF my old pattern was modified to this which avoids full urls which is the issue i was having, but this pattern only finds one occurance at the begging of a string, nothing inside the string. /^\/(.*?).php/ I have a live example here: http://vzio.com/upload/reg_pattern.php

  • jQuery multiple running totals

    - by Benjamin Randal
    0I am using jQuery to calculate a running total on multiple textboxes. Just found an awesome response on how to get that working a few days ago, but now I am running into another problem. When using one selector, the total for GetTotal is calculated perfectly. However, when I include the second selector, the totals begin to conflict with one another, and no longer calculate properly. I have been searching for a solution to this for some time now, does anyone have any ideas? Here is the selector i am currently using: function GetTotal(txtBox) { var total = 0; $('input:text').each(function(index, value) { total += parseInt($(value).val() || 0); }); $("#chkTotal").html(total); } My view uses these txt boxes <div class="editor-field"> @Html.TextBox("Field1", String.Empty, new {InputType = "text", id = "field1", onchange = "GetTotal(this)" }) </div> <div class="editor-field"> @Html.TextBox("Field2", String.Empty, new {InputType = "text", id = "field2", onchange = "GetTotal(this)" }) </div> <div> <h3>Total Checked</h3> </div> <div id="chkTotal"></div> Now I am trying to implement another selector which will total two additional editor fields... function GetTotal1(txtBox) { var total1 = 0; $('input:text').each(function (index, value) { total1 += parseInt($(value).val() || 0); }); $("#disTotal").html(total1); } View: <div class="editor-field"> @Html.TextBox("Field3", String.Empty, new {InputType = "text", id = "field3", onchange = "GetTotal1(this)" }) </div> <div class="editor-field"> @Html.TextBox("Field4", String.Empty, new {InputType = "text", id = "field4", onchange = "GetTotal1(this)" }) </div> <div> <h3>Total Distributed</h3> </div> <div id="disTotal"></div>

  • Efficiency questions

    - by rayman
    Hi, I have to manage XML documents and Strings in my app. In terms of efficiency and memory usage, will a collection like ArrayList be much more expensive than String[]? Also, I could store the content as a regular String or XML. Is working with XML also more expensive? (When I say expensive, I am referring to the use of system resources.) If there are differences, are they significant? Thanks, Ray.
