  • Is it possible to print on a networked Windows Print server from an AIX server, without using remote

    - by Stringent Software
I have an application on an AIX server (v5.3) that needs to print via a Windows Print Server over the LAN. The simplest way to do this is to use SMIT to setup a remote print queue - which I've done on the test environment - but the IT department have refused to set up a remote print queue on the Production server. I don't have root access to the Production server. Is there any other method for connecting the app to the print server that doesn't involve print queues on the AIX box?

  • Why do Chinese filenames displays as boxes in Windows 7?

    - by Roddy
I'm running Windows 7 Professional (UK), and trying to get filenames containing Chinese characters to display correctly in Explorer. I can create Chinese filenames in explorer by pasting text from a webpage or using the Chinese IME to rename files, but the characters just display as boxes (Unicode 'missing character' glyph). The Chinese fonts are installed on the system, and web pages display OK in the browser. In particular, I can see the correct Chinese filenames by pointing chrome at file://C:\, for example.

  • Which free VNC server works well with Windows 7 and how to advertise it via Bonjour for control by a

    - by GJ
Hi I need to control a Windows 7 PC via VNC from a Mac in an office LAN. Since the IPs are dynamically assigned, I'd like the PC to appear in my "Places" and in the automatically detected nearby servers in VNC client I'm using -- both of which require the PC to advertise its VNC server via Bonjour (right?). I tried installing ultravnc, which works when I access it directly by IP, but it doesn't seem to advertise itself in the network. Any ideas?

  • Can I set a default domain for a Windows Authenticated website in IIS7?

    - by Michael Haren
I have an intranet site using Windows Authentication. When users are prompted for credentials, they enter: User: domain\username Pass: SomePassword It'd be nice if they could leave off the domain\ part which would be filled in with a default domain. I'm willing to give up the ability to login with a server/machine account (non-domain) because we don't use that anyway. This seems to be possible with BasicAuth but I can't seem to find a reference for how to do it with WindowsAuth.

  • Windows 7 XP Mode - Is it possible to have multiple XP Mode Virtual PCs?

    - by Yoooder
Win7's XP Mode virtual PC supports some features that aren't 'stock' with an XP Virtual PC such as a different start-up dialog, no Shutdown button, etc. Possibly the most significant is that applications installed within the XP Mode VM appear within the Windows 7 start-menu. I have a need for multiple XP Mode VM's--is it possible to have 2 or more XP Mode vm's, or to otherwise enable these extra integration features in an XP Virtual PC?

  • Why does a hard disk suddenly look to Windows as if it "needs to be formatted"?

    - by pufferfish
This is more of a theory question, but what are the reason(s) for a disk to suddenly cause Windows to start saying it "needs to be formatted"? It happens to an IDE disk that I have in a cheap external enclosure, and I can usually get most of the data back by using software like recuva. It's now happened to an internal disk I have. I'm not looking for software to fix this (although links would be appreciated), but rather a low-level explanation as to what gets corrupted on the disk.

  • How to stop Windows Server Standard from booting me while remoted in?

    - by Mike Pateras
I'm using Remote Desktop connection to connect to a Windows Server box, on which I am an admit. If I'm idle for a few minutes, it locks me out (killing file transfers, which is a problem), and a few minutes after that, it severs my connection. Where can I find the settings that govern these things to stop that from happening? I want it to let me stay connected, regardless if I'm idle.

  • How to bind old user's SID to new user to remain NTFS file ownership and permissions after freshly reinstall of Windows?

    - by LiuYan ??
Each time we reinstalled Windows, it will create a new SID for user even the username is as same as before. // example (not real SID format, just show the problem) user SID -------------------- liuyan S-old-501 // old SID before reinstall liuyan S-new-501 // new SID after reinstall The annoying problem after reinstall is NTFS file owership and permissions on hard drive disk are still associated with old user's SID. I want to keep the ownership and permission setting of NTFS files, then want to let the new user take the old user's SID, so that I can access files as before without permission problem. The cacls command line tool can't be used in such situation, because the file does belongs to new user, so it will failed with Access is denied error. and it can't change ownership. Even if I can change the owership via SubInACL tool, cacls can't remove the old user's permission because the old user does not exist on new installation, and can't copy the old user's permission to new user. So, can we simply bind old user's SID to new user on the freshly installed Windows ? Sample test batch @echo off REM Additional tools used in this script REM PsGetSid http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897417 REM SubInACL http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=23510 REM REM make sure these tools are added into PATH set account=MyUserAccount set password=long-password set dir=test set file=test.txt echo Creating user [%account%] with password [%password%]... pause net user %account% %password% /add psgetsid %account% echo Done ! echo Making directory [%dir%] ... pause mkdir %dir% dir %dir%* /q echo Done ! echo Changing permissions of directory [%dir%]: only [%account%] and [%UserDomain%\%UserName%] has full access permission... pause cacls %dir% /G %account%:F cacls %dir% /E /G %UserDomain%\%UserName%:F dir %dir%* /q cacls %dir% echo Done ! echo Changing ownership of directory [%dir%] to [%account%]... pause subinacl /file %dir% /setowner=%account% dir %dir%* /q echo Done ! echo RunAs [%account%] user to write a file [%file%] in directory [%dir%]... pause runas /noprofile /env /user:%account% "cmd /k echo some text %DATE% %TIME% > %dir%\%file%" dir %dir% /q echo Done ! echo Deleting and Recreating user [%account%] (reinstall simulation) ... pause net user %account% /delete net user %account% %password% /add psgetsid %account% echo Done ! %account% is recreated, it has a new SID now echo Now, use this "same" account [%account%] to access [%dir%], it will failed with "Access is denied" pause runas /noprofile /env /user:%account% "cmd /k cacls %dir%" REM runas /noprofile /env /user:%account% "cmd /k type %dir%\%file%" echo Done ! echo Changing ownership of directory [%dir%] to NEW [%account%]... pause subinacl /file %dir% /setowner=%account% dir %dir%* /q cacls %dir% echo Done !
