• Can I still right click on an app to move it to the left or right workspace like in 11.04 and before? What about one click switcher?

  In 11.04(classic edition) and before, one of the best features of Ubuntu was the workspace switcher, none of the other major OS had something like that built natively. I work with 2 workspaces, one left and the other right. I will right click apps from left workspace and throw them to the right and vice versa. In 11.10, I have to: Open workspace from the launcher Drag the app to the other workspace Double click back on my original workspace What used to take 2 clicks, now takes 1 click, 1 double click and a drag. Is that the modern way to switch apps between workspaces? In older Ubuntu, I had the 2 workspace icons at the bottom right corner of my screen. I can then single click on the left or right workspace for switching. I'm now doing step 1 and 3 from above to perform that single. Are there any shortcuts or customization to reduce the number of events I have to go through to perform those simple actions?

  For testing, I am planning to run a continuous integration testing. There are mainly two options: hosted, or own desktop/server. I will break it into 3 options I have: Hosted: Economical, $10-20/month for a small app Less setup, the CI company manage all hardware and software Desktop: I could just buy a simple, cheap desktop as a test server (about $500). Used server: My current office is offloading some old Dell rack server (Probably dual core Xeon, which I can purchase for $50 or less Please advise me which best serves me for a small team of 2-3 developers.   What is the best way to build an open source database? I would like to build a database of all vehicles and the related maintenance information (i.e Oil Weight, Quantity, Tire Pressure, Windshield wipers etc). Currently this information is fragmented or just not put on line in an open way. Once collection began I would want to import into a DB and then be able to distribute freely. Is there a process (site or group) that I can start gathering this information in a reliable and verifiable way? Is there any issues that I should watch out for?

• Ubuntu 12.04 boot freezes

  I installed win7 on one of my machines. It works without any problem. Now I can not install Ubuntu 12.04 (11.10, 11.04) because the installation process stops in a very early stage: I can see that ISOLinux was loaded, then I can see some very simple icons, then I can see text messages of the kernel. The last message I can see: [6.177983] sr 5:0:0:0: attached scsi general ss1 type 5 At that point the system stops. I tried different versions (11.04) , I disabled, and then disconnected the hdd, but the same problem occured independently from my actions. I can boot a gparted live cd, but that system can not see my hdd. On the other hand, I can boot the installation cd of the latest stable Debian distribution without any problem, but I would prefer to use Ubuntu, because I use that distribution on all of our machines.s Configuration: Asus P8H61-MLE motheboard, Gigabyte GTS 450, Intel i5, 4gb ram, wd 1T sata hdd Any idea? • Is Ubuntu running well on an usb hdd? Need suggestions

  Dear Linux and Ubuntu pros, I have here a company notebook, and because the hdd is full encrypted I cannot install an extra partition for another system that I would like to use in my free time. And I really need another system, because this crap windows here with that much of antivirus, antispyware, anti-whatever on it is sooo slow and anoying. What can I do? I could use an external usb hdd with another system. Because I would like to handle big files and so on, I dont want to use an sub stick. An usb 2.5hdd + ubuntu is what I think the best option. Here are my question: Do I have to note something? Is Ubuntu running well on an external hdd? Do I have big performance problems (because of the usb hdd)? Should I buy a very fast hdd for much money or is it not that important? Any suggestions? Thank you :)

• Scrum Board for a distributed team

  I am looking for recommendations on a digital Scrum Board which can be shared over the internet. I imagine something like a big tablet on which you can draw and which remote users can access, too. I dislike Scrum software because I think one major benefit of a Scrum Board is its physical presence. It should be hard to ignore. The best solution would be two big tablets on which you can draw and which can be synchronized. Has anyone got product recommendations for something like this? Or would you rather use a software? • Changing default application

  Hey i have recently installed Sublime text 2 and i must say it's one of the best text editors i've ever used or even seen in use. So i managed to install everything and added to the unity menu and also change all the entries of gedit.desktop to sublime.desktop and it works just fine for most files but i realised that some files still open in gedit, for example php files, i checked the default list for php but there isn't anything in there. So how would i set the default for opening php files? Update:Also Sublime doesn't show up in them properties menu where i can usually select the default program. Thanks for the help. I'm using 12.10.

• would a composite design pattern be useful for group membership?

  I'm trying to think about the best way to handle group memberships on a website. People sign up and select checkboxes in a list of interests. Every week we send out interest-themed emails to those members that indicated that interest. however i store the information in the database, while i am working with the lists and generating lists of email addresses or manipulating group memberships, the composite design pattern looked interesting. it would be easy to populate the group, then do some aggregating functions that say... generate the list of email addresses based on the interests. but i'm not sure i'm seeing any other advantages. i do need something scalable, and flexible. thoughts?

• How can you become a real programming polyglot?

  I work as a Java programmer, but C and C++ were always my favourite languages during studies. Unfortunatelly I don't have an opportunity to work with them as often as I would like to. As a result I sometimes get realized that I don't remember something quite important (today example: inherited protected members cannot be accessed in derived class constructors). The other example could be Python and Haskell which I enjoy using but don't use everyday. I got an idea to write my own wiki with easy to forget things (e.g. bash tricks & tips) but I find no sense in writing there everything I can forget about coolest programming languages. I know that the best way would be having a side projects (I want to start working on some C/C++ open source project after graduation), but currently I have to write my graduation thesis and work so I merely don't have time to do this. How do you stay sharp in languages that you don't use everyday?

  For instance, I was making my first mobile web-application about a year ago, and half-way through, someone pointed me to jQuery Mobile. Obviously this induced a total revolution in my app. Rewrote everything. Now, if you're in the field long enough, maybe that seems like common knowledge, but I was totally new to it. But this set me wondering: there are so many libraries and extensions and frameworks. This seems particularly crucial in the category of security. I'm afraid I'm going to find myself doing something in a professional setting eventually (I'm still a student) and someone's going to walk over and be like, My god, you're trying to secure user data that way? Don't you know about the Gordon-Wokker crypto-magic-hash-algorithms library? Without it you may as well go plaintext. How do you know what the best ways are to maximize security? Especially if you're trying to develop something on your own...

• E-commerce + CMS: 2 sites or one?

  Ok, let's say that a customer already has a CMS managed web site but now wants to sell goods online using an E-commerce platform (Magento in this case). My question is, does it make any difference between choosing to have just one site running both CMS and E-commerce (www.mycompany.com, or to have one site for the CMS (www.mycompany.com) and another (www.mycompany-shop.com) for E-commerce? I'd like to know the pros and cons of these approaches, so that I can advice the customer for the best. --EDIT I forgot to say that I'd prefer to have 2 separated web sites. This way I shouldn't have to learn how to integrate them together (one in Python, the other in PHP).

• Associative array challenges, or examples?

  I understand well when and how to use an associative array, but I'm trying to teach a friend to program and I'm having some trouble with this particular concept. I need a good set of problems whose solutions are best implemented through the use of maps/hashes/associative arrays/dictionaries. I googled all over and couldn't find any. I was hoping someone might know of some, or perhaps get a community wiki sort of answer. That way I can say, here's our problem, and here's how we could effectively solve it through the use of an associative array... It's one of those cases where when I'm programming and I run into a situation that calls for a dictionary, I recognize it, but I can't seem to make up any such situations to use for a demonstration.

• Inexpensive Business Checks

  One of the most annoying things when setting up a business is paying the outrageous fees for business checks.  When starting out, rather than pay the $150 for the handful of computer printable checks, I had bought software that would create the checks for me.  But if you didn’t know, those little digits at the bottom of a check are magnetically encoded and requires special ink. Fortunately, my current bank has one of the best bill pay websites, so I have exclusively used it.  But since I recently had to open a new bank account, I went off in search of a cheap alternative for business checks.  A bit wary of some of the printers, I opted for TechChecks and was extremely surprised a few days later when my checks arrived in perfect condition.  (I recommend the diamond prismatic red-blue-green checks.  Beautiful and very professional looking.) It was perfect timing as well, since I now have to reorder some checks for another account.

Now I want to grab all directories with the name test in that directory tree and move them into a new directory called tests, e.g.: src->com->a1 -> A.java -> B.java -> test -> test1.java -> test2.java to src->com->a1 -> A.java -> B.java tests->com->a1->test -> test1.java -> test2.java How would I best do that?

• SQL Server - Rebuilding Indexes

  Goal: Rebuild indexes in SQL server. This can be done one at a time or with the example script below to rebuild all index for a specified table or for all tables in a given database. Why? The data in indexes gets fragmented over time. That means that as the index grows, the newly added rows to the index are physically stored in other sections of the allocated database storage space. Kind of like when you load your Christmas shopping into the trunk of your car and it is full you continue to load some on the back seat, in the same way some storage buffer is created for your index but once that runs out the data is then stored in other storage space and your data in your index is no longer stored in contiguous physical pages. To access the index the database manager has to "string together" disparate fragments to create the full-index and create one contiguous set of pages for that index. Defragmentation fixes that. What does the fragmentation affect?Depending of course on how large the table is and how fragmented the data is, can cause SQL Server to perform unnecessary data reads, slowing down SQL Server’s performance.Which index to rebuild?As a rule consider that when reorganize a table's clustered index, all other non-clustered indexes on that same table will automatically be rebuilt. It replaces the fill factor when the index was created, becoming the new default for the index and for any other nonclustered indexes rebuilt because a clustered index is rebuilt. When fillfactor is 0, DBCC DBREINDEX uses the fill factor value last specified for the index. This value is stored in the sys.indexes catalog view. If fillfactor is specified, table_name and index_name must be specified. If fillfactor is not specified, the default fill factor, 100, is used.How do I determine the level of fragmentation?Run the DBCC SHOWCONTIG command. However this requires you to specify the ID of both the table and index being. • How many hours can you be really productive per day? How?

  I find that I'm having a great deal of trouble staying alert 8 hours per day. I've heard of people who've negotiated work contracts of just 4 hours/day, arguing that they won't be able to do much more in eight hours. I am often overwhelmed with drowsiness, boredom, distraction. Some days, I seem to blaze through eight hours in a furious explosion of productivity; other days, I hardly get anything done at all. Most days, it's somewhere in between, and I feel bad for wasting a lot of time because I can't muster the concentration to be my best throughout much of the day. I'd like to hear your experiences (tell me I'm not alone!), and, if found, your solutions to this dilemma. Are you productive 8 hours/day almost every day? How?

• How to program something with the expectation that it will work the first time?

  I had a friend in college who programmed something that worked the first time, that was pretty amazing. But as for me, I just fire up the debugger as soon as I finally get whatever I'm working on to compile - saves me time (kidding of course, I sometimes hold out a little bit of hope or use a lot of premeditated debug strings). What's the best way to approach the Dijkstrain ideal for our programs? -or- Is this just some sort of pie-in-the-sky old fools quest for greatness applicable only to finite tasks that no one should hope for in our professional lives because programming is just too complex?

I would really like to start writing apps using MVC, but they fear any type of change. How is the best way to convince/ease them into using MVC? I guess this can go for moving to any new technology. Update Decided to go the rogue developer route and just started using it. I recreated a small app in MVC and learned the ropes that way, and moved up from there.
