Announcement: Oracle Database Appliance 2.4 patch update now available

The Oracle Database Appliance 2.4 patch is now available from My Oracle Support (MOS). If you search for the Oracle Database Appliance 2.4.0.0.0 Kit under Patches it will display the newly uploaded bundles. The patch highlights include: Normal redundancy (double-mirroring) option providing 6TB of usable storage Enhanced Diagnostics - Trace File Analyzer and ODACHK Also, if you review the README, you may see content that says: "The grid infrastructure and database patching, both are rolling upgradable. During our patching, we patch the node 1 first and when completed, we patch the node 2." I would like to clarify that the 'infrastructure' updates (OS, Firmware, ILOM, etc) will require a short downtime of the ODA while it is applied. When you update the grid infrastructure (--gi), the appliance manager verifies that the infrastructure was updated so you cannot just patch the GI without first updating the infrastructure. The high level update patch steps include (but not limited to): Download patch update to your ODA The --infra (infrastructure) is updated and ODA Databases are down and the ODA is/may be rebooted ODA and GI/Databases are restarted Issue the command to update the Grid Infrastructure/databases (The order of the steps are completed automatically and you cannot control when the nodes are brought up and down during the patching) Node 1 -- shutdown databases and GI Node 1 -- patch GI/database Node 1 -- bring up databases and GI Node 2 -- shutdown databases and GI Node 2 -- patch GI/database Node 2 -- bring up databases and GI A replay from Friday's with Sohan on the 2.4 release can be found here. Creating Multiple Users on Single PHP-FPM Pool

Have PHP-FPM/FastCGI up and running on my cPanel/WHM server but I'd like have it allow for multiple users off of a single pool. Getting all vhosts to run off a single pool is simple by adding this to the Apache include editor under Global Post Vhost: <IfModule mod_fastcgi.c> FastCGIExternalServer /usr/local/sbin/php-fpm -host 127.0.0.1:9000 AddHandler php-fastcgi .php Action php-fastcgi /usr/local/sbin/php-fpm.fcgi ScriptAlias /usr/local/spin/php-fpm.fcgi /usr/local/sbin/php-fpm <Directory /usr/local/sbin> Options ExecCGI FollowSymLinks SetHandler fastcgi-script Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </IfModule> But I'd like to find a way to implement php running under the user, but sharing the pool. I manage and control all the domains that run under the pool so I'm not concerned about security of files per account, I just need to make sure all scripting can be executed by the user who owns the files, instead of needing to change file permissions for each account, or having to create tons of vhost include files.

Microsoft Silverlight Analytics Framework - Day 2 Part 2 of MIX 2010

I went to the session on Microsoft Silverlight Analytics Framework (MSAF) today while here at MIX 2010. It was a great walk through the features, ideas, and what the end goal is. Michael Scherotter did a great job of lining up the ideas, intentions, and the functional ideas behind the framework. The framework is built around the Silverlight Behaviors. If you aren't sure what behaviors are, check out these entries from Nikhilk.net Silverlight Behaviors, Silverlight 3 Drag Behavior, An Introduction to Behaviors, Triggers, and Actions, and of course the MSDN Documentation on the matter. Some of the key features of the framework is to support out-of-browser scenarios, which works perfectly with out Webtrends DX Web Services. Offline scenarios, which again, we have worked toward supporting at Webtrends DC Web Services via caching and other criteria as needed. Another feature that I was really stoked about is the Microsoft Expression Blend integration that removes the need for coding, thus simplifying the addition of analytics components based on events or other actions within a Silverlight Application. This framework also easily supports A/B Testing (again, something we do quit a bit of at Webtrends with Webtrends Optimize. The last thing I really wanted to point out was the control support that this framework has support in already from Telerik RadControls, Smooth Streaming Media Element, and Microsoft Silverlight Media Framework Player 1.0. These are implemented with behaviors and handlers exposed via MEF (Managed Extensibility Framework). All in all, great second day, great analytics framework for Silverlight, and great presentation. On a router, how do I block wan access for a particular machine without blocking its access to the local network?

On my tp-link TL-WR1043ND router I want to prevent a particular machine from having access to the WAN while still allowing that machine to access other machines on the LAN. My assumption is that I need to do something in the "Access Control" section, however the problem is that it wants an ip range or domain name for the target of the rule. The router uses DHCP to get an address from the WAN, so I don't have any guarantee what the ip address of the wan will be. If the answer is that it's not possible with this router, could someone describe how to do it using OpenWRT instead?

IBM Bladecentre H Bootup

I have a bladecentre with blades, network and a SAN in a single rack. What I'd like to do is control the startup of the bladecentre so that when the rack is powered on that the blades will delay their bootup until the SAN is powered on correctly. Is this even possible? We have an AMM in the chassis if that helps. Basically we are looking into the reboot that occurs after power is restored to a UPS. I sincerely apologise for the noobness of this question, but I am a software guy trying to help :)

Trouble with NFS file sharing on Synology 211 NAS and Ubuntu Client

I'm attempting to set up NFS file sharing and keep getting the error... mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.1.110:/myshared Here is the exact command I'm using to mount sudo mount -o nolock 192.168.1.110:/myshared /home/emiller/MyShared I have set 'Enabled NFS' in DSM and set nfs priviledges in the the Shares section of the control panel. Here is the /etc/exports entry from the NAS. volume1/myshared 192.168.1.*(rw,sync,no_wdelay,no_root_squash,insecure_locks,anonuid=0,anongid=0) I read some things about the hosts.allow and hosts.deny but it seems like if they are empty they aren't used for anything. I can see the share when I run ... showmount -e 192.168.1.110 Any help would be appreciated in this matter.

Problem installing Ubuntu One in Windows XP

I've just had to reinstall my Ubuntu One client for Windows XP Service Pack 3 and whenever I do it uninstalls my previous attempt then comed up with the following error message c:\Program Files/ubuntuone\dist\ubuntuone-control-panel-qt.exe This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling this application may fix this problem. The only option I have is "ok" then nothing happens. I've tried downloading Ubuntu One several times and tried Windows 2000 compatibility mode, Administrator mode and nothing. The only thing that I make happen is for Windows NT 5 mode, a small box appears with nothing showing and nothing else. I really need Ubuntu 1 on my computer as it has everything on it so I'm wondering if I can do anything to make it install or if it's a lost cause. The last time I tried to install U1 on Windows XP I had the same problem but after about 10 tries it installed. I've tried about 30 times now and nothing. My computer is a Dell OptiPlex SX280 with 2gb ram and 340GB Hard disk Intel Pentium 4 HT Processor

Debuggin in Eclipse - Run till breakpoint

I am trying to debug my java code in eclipse. By using break points and Debug mode, the control hits the break point after which I can use F6 to navigate through my code. Consider I have my break point inside a for loop. In Visual Studio 2005, if we hit Execute (F5), it would stop at next breakpoint. How can I achieve the same in eclipse. Also consider, if I make a change while debugging. So I want to Stop the execution and restart it again from beginning. Like we have Stop Execution in VS 2005. Mainly for those who have extensively used Visual Studio 2005, how does eclipse provide similar functionality.

How to find location of installed library

Background: I'm trying to build my program but first I need to set up libraries in netbeans. My project is using GLU and therefore I installed libglu-dev. I didn't note location where the libraries were located and now I can't find them.. I've switched to Linux just a few days ago and so far I'm very content with it, however I couldn't google this one out and becoming frustrated.. Is there way to find out where files of package were installed without running installation again? I mean if I got library xxx and installed it some time ago, is there somecommand xxx that will print this info? I've already tried locate, find and whereis commands but either I'm missing something or I just can't do it correctly.. for libglu, locate returns: /usr/share/bug/libglu1-mesa /usr/share/bug/libglu1-mesa/control /usr/share/bug/libglu1-mesa/script /usr/share/doc/libglu1-mesa /usr/share/doc/libglu1-mesa/changelog.Debian.gz /usr/share/doc/libglu1-mesa/copyright /usr/share/lintian/overrides/libglu1-mesa /var/lib/dpkg/info/libglu1-mesa:i386.list /var/lib/dpkg/info/libglu1-mesa:i386.md5sums /var/lib/dpkg/info/libglu1-mesa:i386.postinst /var/lib/dpkg/info/libglu1-mesa:i386.postrm /var/lib/dpkg/info/libglu1-mesa:i386.shlibs Other two commands fail to find anything. Now locate did it's job but I'm sure none of those paths is where the library actually resides (at least everything I was linking so far was in /usr/lib or usr/local/lib). The libglu was introduced just as example, I'm looking for general solution for this problem.

Stop Your Mouse from Waking Up Your Windows 7 Computer

If you use Sleep Mode on your PC, have you ever noticed that moving your mouse will wake the computer from sleep mode? If you would prefer to only have the PC wake up when you hit a key instead, there’s a simple tweak. Just type Mouse into the start menu search box, or the Control Panel search box, and then open up the Mouse Properties panel. Find the Hardware tab, select your mouse in the list, and then click the Properties button. You’ll have to click the “Change settings” button before you can see the Power Management tab… And now, you can uncheck the box from “Allow this device to wake the computer”. Content Highlights Our Application Composer series had fresh articles on the related internal data model and lots more on Groovy, including how to manipulate your data and a useful table showing you when and where groovy scripting can be used. For those just getting started with Fusion Applications user security, this article gave some handy examples to get your going. Jani's Java Cloud Service series continued strongly, with examples of integration using ADFbc, a Web Service Proxy client, and the ADF Data Control. From Other Teams The Oracle A-Team provided a broad set of articles during May, with various topics related to Fusion Applications including patching and performance management for on-premises deployments, and generic content on both integration and data extraction via web services. As part of their presentation to Oracle Israel User Group, our AppsUX colleagues explained the fresh new type of interface to Oracle Sales, through the voice mobile apps. This was in addition to demonstrations of the newer Release 8 Simplified UI customization options. Finally Angelo, our colleague in Platform Technical Services, explained in his blog how to use the findCriteria element included in all Oracle Sales web services to reduce the data returned, making response payloads much more specific, lightweight and therefore usable. Events and Announcements Oliver explained in this post about the new set of code samples on OTN for extending Sales Cloud using Oracle Platform as a Service. Samba networking with a domain-joined computer

I have two computers connected to the same linksys router - one running Ubuntu 8.04 and one running Windows 7. The Windows computer is part of a work domain (when connected via VPN). I'm trying to also create a home network so I can access the linux server from Windows. From what I understand, I have to first create a Windows workgroup and then configure Samba on linux to join the Windows network. So in Windows, I went to Control Panel - Network and Internet - HomeGroup and got the following message: There is currently no homegroup on your network. Because this computer also belongs to a domain, you can't create your own homegroup, but can join one created by someone on your network. Can I use Samba to create a homegroup? Is there any other way to create a Windows workgroup? Or am I barking up the wrong tree completely?

AutoHotkey cannot interact with Windows 8 Windows…or can it!

If you’ve installed Windows 8 and are trying to use AutoHotkey (AHK) to interact with some of the Winodws 8 Windows (such as the Control Panel for example), or with apps that need to be Ran As Administrator, then you’ve likely become very frustrated as I did to discover that AHK can not send any commands (keyboard or mouse input) to these windows. This was a huge concern as I often need to run Visual Studio as an administrator and wanted my hotkeys and hotstrings to work in Visual Studio. After a day of fighting I finally realized the answer (and it’s pretty obvious once you think about it). If you want AHK to be able to interact with Windows 8 Windows or apps running as administrator, then you also need to have your AHK script Run As Administrator. If you are like me then you probably have your AHK scripts set to run automatically at login, which means you don’t have the opportunity to right-click on the script and manually tell it to Run As Administrator. Luckily the work around is simple. First, if you want to have your AHK script (or any program for that matter) run when you log in, create a shortcut to the application and place the shortcut in: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup Note that you will need to replace “[User Name]” with your username, and that “AppData” is a hidden folder so you’ll need to turn on viewing hidden folders to see it. So by placing that shortcut there Windows will automatically run your script when you log on. Now, to get it to run as an administrator by default, right-click on the shortcut and go to Properties. Under the Shortcut tab, click on the “Advanced…” button and check off “Run as administrator”. That’s it. Now when you log onto Windows your script will automatically start up, running as an administrator; allowing it to interact with any application and window like you had expected it to in the first place. Next generation of command shells?

I am curious about if there is any project about a replacement for the current unix-shells (like bash, ash, rsh ...), at least adding some new ideas or paradigm in this area. I was searching but i found very few information, this project http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendly_interactive_shell seems interesting, but not so diferent from the nowadays solutions. What do you think? Do you imagine a linux-distribution on 2020 that still having bash? How can be an evolution of this programs? Br To be clearer, about new ideas, i was talking of something like: control-Z functionality Colaboration features (like remote desktop) so you can invite someone to join and participate on your shell session Possibility to see the result of a command before to really apply it to your system (this is closely related with the 1st point ctl-Z) etc...

SQL Query for Determining SharePoint ACL Sizes

When a SharePoint Access Control List (ACL) size exceeds more than 64kb for a particular URL, the contents under that URL become unsearchable due to limitations in the SharePoint search engine. The error most often seen is The Parameter is Incorrect which really helps to pinpoint the problem (its difficult to convey extreme sarcasm here, please note that it is intended). Exceeding this limit is not unheard of – it can happen when users brute force security into working by continually overriding inherited permissions and assigning user-level access to securable objects. Once you have this issue, determining where you need to focus to fix the problem can be difficult. Fortunately, there is a query that you can run on a content database that can help identify the issue: SELECT [SiteId], MIN([ScopeUrl]) AS URL, SUM(DATALENGTH([Acl]))/1024 as AclSizeKB, COUNT(*) AS AclEntries FROM [Perms] (NOLOCK) GROUP BY siteid ORDER BY AclSizeKB DESC This query results in a list of ACL sizes and entry counts on a site-by-site basis. You can also remove grouping to see a more granular breakdown: SELECT [ScopeUrl] AS URL, SUM(DATALENGTH([Acl]))/1024 as AclSizeKB, COUNT(*) AS AclEntries FROM [Perms] (NOLOCK) GROUP BY ScopeUrl ORDER BY AclSizeKB DESC

AWStats on Plesk consumes all of CPU and crashes server - how do you disable plesk.

Hello, I have Plesk 9.0.1 running on a Red Hat server. Every week or so at about 4:10am the server locks up. At this time the server CPU usage shhots from 4% to 90% at the same time as a mass of awstats.pl processes start (I can't see how many as my datat only shows the top 30 processes, but all of these are awstats.pl). I turned off awstats through the Plesk control panel for all but 5 domains but I still get 90% CPU usage and at least 30 instances of awstats.pl happening at 4:10am as usual. Does anyone know why this may be? Does anyone know how to disable awstats (I have stats covered using piwik)? Thanks

Detect and monitor changes to MySQL database

I use Drupal, and instead of having to use the formal interface to make small changes to a site all the time, I am wondering if there is a way to determine what modifications Drupal makes to the database so that I can make them manually the next time. For example, if I use Drupal’s interface to add a module to the site, I would like to be able to find out what database entries it changes/adds so that if I want to add another module, I can add or change the file or database entry myself instead of having to go through Druapl. This way, I can have better control over the system as well as gain a greater understanding of how it works underneath. My environment is Windows XP, MySQL latest stable, phpmyadmin.

Add a Real-Time Earth Wallpaper App to Ubuntu with xplanetFX

Are you tired of the same old wallpaper on your Ubuntu desktop? Now you can go from blah to literally spacious, real-time styled views of Earth with the xplanetFX Wallpaper App for Linux. You can conveniently access the “file type” downloads, screenshots, and jump-to links all on the front page. For our example we downloaded the .deb setup file on our system. The setup file will need to download three additional files to complete the setup process. After those are downloaded all dependencies will have been met and you can complete the installation process. Once that is done you can find xplanetFX by going to the Accessories Section of your Ubuntu Menu. This is what the main control window looks like when you start xplanetFX for the first time. Are project managers useful in Scrum?

There are three roles defined in Scrum: Team, Product Owner and Scrum Master. There is no project manager, instead the project manager job is spread across the three roles. For instance: The Scrum Master: Responsible for the process. Removes impediments. The Product Owner: Manages and prioritizes the list of work to be done to maximize ROI. Represents all interested parties (customers, stakeholders). The Team: Self manage its work by estimating and distributing it among themselves. Responsible for meeting their own commitments. So in Scrum, there is no longer a single person responsible for project success. There is no command-and-control structure in place. That seems to baffle a lot of people, specifically those not used to agile methods, and of course, PM's. I'm really interested in this and what your experiences are, as I think this is one of the things that can make or break a Scrum implementation. Do you agree with Scrum that a project manager is not needed? Do you think such a role is still required? Why?

Best security practice for small networks - wifi, lan,

We regularly setup small networks for clients in different locations to allow them to work on different products now the question what should be the best security practice. Currently we have a wifi enabled with WPA2 and most laptops connect to this but some will connect to a cabled switch connecting to the router. We are thinking on what we should do to increase the security on our small networks - We do have have security on the laptops so you can share directly to the other persons drive by a simple Windows user account. Some suggestions are: We get a LAN switch with ACL control and mac filtering for the hard wired connections? We get acl working on the wifi via a good Cisco router? ipSec policies on all machines? IP filtering and fixed IPs? I suppose people are worried that anyone can plug into the switches and get the access to the network . Summary: Maintain a level of decent security that can be replicated easily to every setup that we do for clients

We are offering multiple SSL-enabled services in our local network. To avoid certificate-warnings we bought certificates for server.ourdomain.tld and firewall.ourdomain.tld. We now created a zone in our local DNS-server in which we pointed the hosts to the corresponding private-ips. Now, each time another record for ourdomain.tld, like for example www.ourdomain.tld or alike are changed, we need to update it on both our public-dns-server AND the local dns-server. I would like our local bind-dns to serve all the information from our public-dns but serve different information for these 2 hosts. I know I could possibly have our private-ips in our public-dns but I don't want that for security reasons. The internet dns-server is being managed by a third party, while we have full control of the intranet one. Because of this I am looking for a solution which lets the intranet retrieve the records from the internet one.
