• Why is C++ predominant in programming contests and competitions?

  I understand that C++ is a very fast language, but ain't C just as fast, or faster in some cases? Then you might say that C++ has OOP, but the amount of OOP you need for most programming puzzles is not that big, and in my opinion C would be able handle that. Here's why I am asking this: I am very interested in programming contests and competitions, and I am used to coding in C on those. However, I noticed that the vast majority of people use C++ (e.g., 17 out of 25 finalists on Google Code Jam 2011 used it, while no one used C), so I am wondering if I am at a disadvantage going with C. Apart from the Object Orientation, what makes C++ a more suitable language for programming competitions? What are the features of the language I should learn and use to perform better on the competitions? For background, I consider myself pretty proficient in C, but I am just starting to learn C++.

  It was brought to my attention that if you search for the name of one of our directors (with the intent to find there profile page on our site) They come up as the first link in most search engines as you would expect but the link text is just pure spam. the three search string I have tested on Google, Bing, Ask, and Yahoo have all returned similar results.   Recently I installed Google Analytics on a Blogger account. I was shocked when I saw load times for the landing pages between 10 and 60 seconds. The blog uses Facebook like-box, twitter recent messages box, live traffic feed widget and Lockerz share buttons.   I have a survey with the following form fields: Country Age Male/Female Undergraduate/Graduate Question? Yes No If No, what about this and that? Yes No Google Forms and SurveyMonkey don't seem to allow things like the above. For question one I could ask, "What country are you from?" with a textbox as an answer section and work around it. But how do I go about creating questions five and six? I am not able to figure out how to do it except for having one more question that says "If your answer to the previous question was No, then blah blah (else skip this question)".   Is there any tool or method that will load a localhost page a number of times, and return the averaged data for load times, onload events, Dom ready events, etc? I'd like to work on page speed optimization, but need a baseline before I begin. I have used both Google analytics and Webmaster tools, but I'd like an automated solutions that runs locally. My ideal solution would be a program or script that would take the path/file, number of iterations, and then take several minutes to load the page n times without cache and crunch numbers to create a baseline.

On a site like http://p2theme.com/ as you scroll down you see that content is arranged into screen-sized chunks, each with its own chunk of content, each with a different background color, making them visually distinctive. I've seen this used more and more frequently on websites, but don't know what it's called. People have tried telling me "responsive design" or "flat UI" or "infinite scroll" or "parallax" -- but those are completely different things. What do you call this technique?

• Does a "nofollow" attribute on a link prevent URL discovery by search engines?

  I know that nofollow prevents link juice from being passed across a link. But if search engine robots discover a link with a nofollow on it, will they add that link to their crawl queue? In other words, if I create a link to a brand new page and put a rel=nofollow attribute on that link, will it prevent search engine bots (particularly Googlebot) from crawling the page. (Assuming that this link remains the only link into that page.) I've read conflicting reports about this over the years and I'm looking for authoritative references about the current state of affairs. Official statements from Google or published results of independent testing would be ideal.

• Ubuntu touch flashing failed/taking to long. Black screen! Redeploy help!

  So i'm brand new to the whole unlock, root and flashing thing. I just tried flashing Ubuntu touch on my Galaxy Nexus (international GSM/HSPA+) and everything seamed fine until the very end when i got this ERROR message. ERROR:phablet-flash:Installation is taking too long or an error occured along the way. I didn't know what to do so i disconnected my device (which was in Ubuntu recovery) and tried rebooting it from there, it worked "sort of". i got the Google logo with the unlocked icon then it continued to a black screen. In the installation guide on http://www.ubuntu.com/phone/install said i should: "try wiping the /data partition on your device and redeploy". the problem is that i don't know how to do this and i'm basically sitting here with a useless phone right now. I would be extremely grateful for some proffeexpert help.

  In Google Webmaster Tools, I noticed that my front page was indexed two times: example.com/ example.com/?chocaid=397 I know that I could fix this with the use of link type canonical, but I wonder: Where does this parameter come from? There are various sites that have pages indexed with this very parameter/value: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=chocaid%3D397. I looked for similarities between these sites. but couldn't find a conclusive one: It's often the front page, but not in every case. Some are NSFW, but not all.   I want to start doing freelance work, but no matter how I look at it, it seems like the best way to get customers and to have work most of the time, you have to already be in the freelancing game. Most freelancers I've talked to have had the same customers over the years or got new customers because their satisfied clients referred them. What I'd like to know from the successful people here that work as freelancers is how do you start doing business when you haven't yet set foot in freelancing? I want to start small, creating websites that won't require me to hire other people other than maybe a designer I already know. (I'd like to create desktop applications as well, but I think I should keep that for later when I'm more experienced) . I thought about localized Google ads or visiting companies and meeting the people in charge there, but I wouldn't know which kind of businesses to look for or if it's even a good way to approach this. • Flash Webcam non responsive

  I've got the same problem as this gentleman: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+question/176541 Where the webcam settings / access does not work at all / is completely unresponsive in Ubuntu 11.10. I've tried webcam access in Facebook, Google+, my own code + a number of tutorials/demos and none work. What happens is the settings dialogue is completely unresponsive. Clicking tabs or buttons does nothing. In the question linked to a suggested answer is to run Unity 2D. Unfortunately this does not work for me (the exact same thing happens). I've also tried Gnome 3 which also does not work. Note that it is only the webcam settings that don't work. YouTube videos and annoying banners work just fine. Does anyone know of a workaround for this (except going back to 11.04) or if they've fixed this in 12.04? - also, are any of you experiencing the same thing?
