• How to sort a list by the 2nd tuple element in python and C#

  I had a list of tuples where every tuple consists of two integers and I wanted to sort by the 2nd integer. After looking in the python help I got this: sorted(myList, key=lambda x: x[1]) which is great. My question is, is there an equally succinct way of doing this in C# (the language I have to work in)? I know the obvious answer involving creating classes and specifying an anonymous delegate for the whole compare step but perhaps there is a linq oriented way as well. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

• Alternative to nesting for loops in Python

  I've read that one of the key beliefs of Python is that flat nested. However, if I have several variables counting up, what is the alternative to multiple for loops? My code is for counting grid sums and goes as follows: def horizontal(): for x in range(20): for y in range(17): temp = grid[x][y: y + 4] sum = 1 for n in temp: sum += int(n) return sum This seems to me like it is too heavily nested. Firstly, what is considered to many nested loops in Python ( I have certainly seen 2 nested loops before). Secondly, if this is too heavily nested, what is an alternative way to write this code?

• Selecting an item in an HTML SELECT list using keyboard doesnt trigger the CLICK event

  I have an HTML select list which, when an item is selected, must show different information beneath it. The onclick or JQuery change events are triggered when a select list item is selected by being clicked on (mouse), but not when the user uses key presses (keyboard). Any idea what event to watch in order to determine when the selected list item has changed?   I have a situation that demands, passing the registry path as a parameter for application launch, say I have IE as default launcher for http types HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command\ Default = iexplore %1 Any shell launch of a URL would invoke iexplore <<"URL String". My requirement is additionally pass the registry path as parameter, so when a launch happens (note no change in the launch) iexplore <<"URL String" should translate into something like iexplore <<"URL String" "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command\" How should my registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command\ modified so as to get the extra registry path appended for all shell launches ?   In Hibernate HQL, how would you query through a many-to-many association. If I have a Company with multiple ProductLines and other companies can offer these same product lines, I have a Company entity, a ProductLine entity and an association table CompanyProductLine. In SQL, I can get what I need like this: select * from company c where c.companyId in (select companyId from companyProductLine cpl, productline pl where cpl.productLineId = pl.productLineId and pl.name= 'some value'); My problem sees to lie with the association I defined in the Company.hbm.xml file: <set name="productLines" cascade="save-update" table="CompanyProductLine"> <key column="companyId"/> <many-to-many class="com.foo.ProductLine" column="productLineId" /> </set> Any HQL I seem to come up with will throw a: 'expecting 'elements' or 'indices"' Hibernate exception. • Reliably detect caller domain over cURL request?

  OK so server-side security is not my forte. Basically, I'm building a service which users may use (via an SDK) only on the domain they stipulated when they signed up. The SDK calls my web service over cURL in PHP. Would I be right in thinking I cannot reliably detect the caller domain, i.e. enforce that it is the same domain they stipulated when signing up? cURL of course sends this over headers, but headers can always (?) be faked. Is there a better course of action to enforce domain for this sort of thing? (NB I'm already using an API key, too - it's just I wanted to restrict domain, too) Thanks in advance

• Storing cvs data for further manipulation using Ruby

  I am dealing with a csv file that has some customer information (email, name, address, amount, [shopping_list: item 1, item 2]). I would like work with the data and produce some labels for printing... as well as to gather some extra information (total amounts, total items 1...) My main concern is to find the appropriate structure to store the data in ruby for future manipulation. For now I have thought about the following possibilities: multidimensional arrays: pretty simple to build, but pretty hard to access the data in a beautiful ruby way. hashes: having the email as key, and storing the information in different hashes (one hash for name, another hash for address, another hash for shopping list...) (getting the cvs data in to a Database and working with the data from ruby??) I would really appreciate your advice and guidance!!

• DB2 Child Table - Auto Delete With Parent

  I have a bit of a task before me. (DB2 Database) I need to create a table that will be a child table (is that what it is called in SQL?) I need it so that it has a foreign key constraint with my other table, so when the parent table is modified (record deleted) the child table also loses that record. Once I have the table, I also need to populate it with the data from the other table (if there is an easy way to UPDATE this). I want to build an invoice web application, an invoice can have many items, and each user can have an inventory list of product items that they can store and choose to add to an invoice item. My questions are: 1. Should I store all product inventory for all users using my application under one single table? Or have a separate product inventory table created for each user? 2. Is this even possible? 1 table is easier, but what if this single table grows too big, will I have a problem? (primary key INT).

  Hi all I have a scenario in which I need to design online keyboard with buttons implementing different mathematical functions in ASP.NET. For example 1) A button called "Fraction" Onclicking= should display A numerator and a denominator separated by '-' with empty fields. Just as we write fractions manually. Now when the user clicks on this button the cursor should focus on numerator displaying 'the division line' and then by pressing 'Down' arrow key(on computr keyboard) should focus on denominator allowing users to enter both fields. Keeping it simple the user should be able to toggle between numerator and denominator. Please help me with some sample code. I have got no idea. Thanks in advance

  The problem: let's say I have two tables Client, and Product, in which Client has its primary key and a column called products (that points to pk's in Product table)... ok, if I need products to point only one row, it's nice, but if I need it to point for... 1000 rows in Product table, the products column would have to be larger enought... but I can't predict this situation. So, how could I design my table and how would I use hibernate with it, to achieve that "pointing" in a optmized and maybe "easy" way. NOTE: I excluded some columns of the "design" presented here, just to keep the simplicity.

• PHP/MySQL: Storing and retrieving UUIDS

  I'm trying to add UUIDs to a couple of tables, but I'm not sure what the best way to store/retrieve these would be. I understand it's far more efficient to use BINARY(16) instead of VARCHAR(36). After doing a bit of research, I also found that you can convert a UUID string to binary with: UNHEX(REPLACE(UUID(),'-','')) Pardon my ignorance, but is there an easy way to this with PHP and then turn it back to a string, when needed, for readability? Also, would it make much difference if I used this as a primary key instead of auto_increment? EDIT: Found part of the answer: $bin = pack("h*", str_replace('-', '', $guid)); How would you unpack it?

• FBConnect Demo Application

  I am running the demo application that is supplied with the facebook-ios-sdk. The application starts in the emulator, with a LogIn button. I click the button which then launches safari to grant access to the application. I log in with my fb creds and allow the application. I am the administrator for the application and I have verified I put in the right app key. After I allow access, it says "Safari cannot open the page because the address in invalid"...this is the url it's trying to go to: http://www.facebook.com/connect/uiserver.php... So am I missing something because the breakpoint for (void)fbDidLogin never gets hit...

  I'm trying to add user submitted articles to my website, (only for admins). With each article comes an option to upload up to 3 images. My database is set up like this Articles id user_id title body date_added last_edited Photos id (auto_increment) article_id First I save the article in the database, then I upload the photo (temporarily) then I create a new photo record in the database saving the article_id. Then I rename the uploaded photo to be the same as the primary key of the photo record, and to be a png. $filename = $photo->id . '.png'; I figured this would be a good way to prevent files form being overwritten. This seems flawed to me. Any suggestions on how I should save my records and photos? Thanks

The C# compiler doesn’t really do any optimisation. The C# compiler just spits out IL… and at the runtime it’s the JITer that does all the optimisation. The JITer does have a Debug/Release mode and that makes a huge difference to performance.   I have a Dictionary of objects I have created in smalltalk, which I am iterating over by enumerating it based on the key/value pairs. For value object in the dictionary, I am calling a method on that object. Based on certain conditions, I would like for this object to be able to add a new member to dictionary, and possibly delete another one. I've been looking at the 'Perform' and 'Messages' facilities in Smalltalk, but I'm not sure if it is even possible to do what I'm trying to do - is it possible to return a message (or multiple messages), which another object can process and perform? For example, could my method return 'removeKey: 19' and 'add object' at the same time? I am using GNU Smalltalk, if it matters.

• How to use Map element as text of a JComboBox

  I am populating a JComboBox (using addItem()) with all the elements of a collection. Each element in the collection is a HashMap (so its a ComboBox of Hashmaps..). My question is - Given that I need each item to be a HashMap how do I set the text to apear in the combobox on the GUI? It needs to be the value of a certain key in the map. Normally if I am populating a combobox with my own type, I would just overide the toString() method...but I am not sure how to acheive this since I am using a Java HashMap. Any ideas (if possible, without implementing my own HashMap)? Update: It seems like there isn't anyway to avoid having the object int the JComboBox overide toString() if I want custom functionality..I wish there was a way to (1) specify the objects to be loaded into the JComboBox and (2) specify how these objects are to appear in the GUI.

  I am wondering where the hibernate second level cache works as expected if I put a where clause in the hbm.xml class definition: <hibernate-mapping> <class name="com.clazzes.A" table="TABLE_A" mutable="false" where="xyz=5" > <cache usage="read-only"/> <id name="id" /> ... Will hibernate still put the id as key into the cache, or do I have enable the query cache? E.g. when I then execute a HQL query like from A where id=2 that results in an SQL similar to select * from TABLE_A where id=2 and (xyz=5). If I execute this query twice, will it consider the second level cache, or will it nevertheless execute the SQL twice?
