  • Are Ruby on Rails / Grails the fastest frameworks for getting sites up quickly?

    - by Jon
I'm considering using Grails for a new website, but am open to other/new programming languages and frameworks. I have done development using J2EE/JSF2, ASP.NET, and PHP. Is Grails or Ruby on Rails pretty much the best way to get functionality up and running quickly? Some initial thoughts: DJango looks similar to RoR/Grails and I'd consider it GWT is an interesting concept but it doesn't seem like turnaround time is quite as fast Thanks, -Jon

  • StackUnderflow.js: A JavaScript Library and Mashup Tool for StackExchange

    - by InfinitiesLoop
StackUnderflow.js is a JavaScript library that lets you retrieve – and render – questions from the StackExchange API directly on your website just by including a simple, lightweight .js script. The library is fully documented, so for technical details please check out the StackApps entry for it , and follow the links to the GitHub repository. The rest of this post is about my motivation for the library, how I am using it on the blog, and some other thoughts about the API. StackExchange (e.g. StackOverflow...(read more)

  • SQL University: Parallelism Week - Introduction

    - by Adam Machanic
Welcome to Parallelism Week at SQL University . My name is Adam Machanic, and I'm your professor. Imagine having 8 brains, or 16, or 32. Imagine being able to break up complex thoughts and distribute them across your many brains, so that you could solve problems faster. Now quit imagining that, because you're human and you're stuck with only one brain, and you only get access to the entire thing if you're lucky enough to have avoided abusing too many recreational drugs. For your database server,...(read more)

  • Android market going down the drain?

<b>Ian's Thoughts:</b> "You can search the Android Market for the following keywords and see quite a bit of content that I feel shouldn't be available to customers, and definitely not to children: nude, sex, porn, 18+, adults only, boobs, the android market seems to be turning into a porn hub."

  • VS20 next, test frameworks and what you want to see?

    - by andrewstopford
VS2010 is right around the corner and thoughts now turn to the next version of VS. One thing I am seeking dear reader is how in the next version you would like to improve how VS interacts with test frameworks and tools, could that be made better and what would you most want to see (better reporting, better interaction with TFS, better templating support for test frameworks etc)?

  • Google adwords API - credit card safety question

    - by user5650
Google is asking me to fax credit card xerox in order to activate adwords API in MCC. 1) Are there alternatives to this - is there a 3rd party provider who will give me this service without me sending them the credit card info? 2) How secure is it to send my credit card fax via some online fax service? 3) Do you think they will reject the application if I hide my CVV number in the fax? Any other thoughts appreciated.

  • Database Design - Surrogate keys: Part 1 of many (Rules for Surrogate Keys, E. F. Codd and C J Date

    - by tonyrogerson
I started writing an article for my blog on surrogate keys drawing in the original research by E F Codd and C J Date, its getting a bit big :) so I'm going to chop it up into a number of posts over the coming weeks depending on my time. I'm interested in your thoughts and if you disagree please let me know but more importantly give me references back to papers stating why you take that position. Hope it makes sense. • DNS lookup when using a CDN

    - by Steven Wu
Using a CDN can vastly improve the load time of a website. I been thinking of using it to host all my external files like CSS, JS, Images, Videos etc. However I was thinking when linking to a CDN, wouldn't the browser have to use additional DNS lookup? So wouldn't this be counter productive? Or is the benefit to host every external files on a CDN out weighs the additional cost of a DNS lookup? What are your thoughts?

  • Apostrophe in fstab

    - by Hamy
Can's get a window's directory to mount due to an apostrophe. The relevant bit of fstab: # Auto-mount windows drive UUID=0C1C51021C50E86A /media/windows ntfs defaults 0 0 # Auto-mount the Music folder /media/windows/Documents\040and\040Settings/Foo\040Name/My\040Documents/My\040Music/Foo's\040Music /home/foo/Music none bind 0 0 Note that I'm using the \040 to escape spaces, but man ascii doesn't (from what I see) have an escape character for a '. • Pre-Conference Sessions at the PASS Summit

    - by andyleonard
Introduction I have some thoughts on the selection of pre-conference and post-conference session presenters at the PASS Summit. PASS pre-conference and post-conference sessions are $395. Trainers and speakers in the various SQL Server fields (relational engine, business intelligence, etc.) are selected to deliver these day-long seminars before and (now) after each PASS Summit. I have attended a few and the quality and amount of the training easily justifies the $395 price tag. Full Disclosure I've...(read more)

  • Can I use silverlight for building SocialNetworking applicaiton?

    - by dimmV
Hi all, I am wondering: how feasible it would be to start developing a social networking website entirely based on silverlight; This has been fairly discussed over the years in favor of HTML. Has something changed with silverlight improvements over the years? What about: * Performance -- active users -- technology used, MVVM + MEF (possibility of lags, server memory overflow...) * Security --- WCF Ria Services & EF What are your thoughts on this subject?

  • Nuget Dependencies and latest Versions

    - by Rick Strahl
NuGet is a great component distribution mechanism and it's awesome for consuming components and getting them into projects. However, creating NuGet packages and getting the version dependencies worked out reliably has been a challenge. Specifically the way dependency versions are pulled in by NuGet are somewhat counterintuitive. In this post I look at some of the issues and bring up some thoughts of how this could work better.

  • Don Knuth and MMIXAL vs. Chuck Moore and Forth -- Algorithms and Ideal Machines -- was there cross-pollination / influence in their ideas / work?

    - by AKE
Question: To what extent is it known (or believed) that Chuck Moore and Don Knuth had influence on each other's thoughts on ideal machines, or their work on algorithms? I'm interested in citations, interviews, articles, links, or any other sort of evidence. It could also be evidence of the form of A and B here suggest that Moore might have borrowed or influenced C and D from Knuth here, or vice versa. (Opinions are of course welcome, but references / links would be better!) Context: Until fairly recently, I have been primarily familiar with Knuth's work on algorithms and computing models, mostly through TAOCP but also through his interviews and other writings. However, the more I have been using Forth, the more I am struck by both the power of a stack-based machine model, and the way in which the spareness of the model makes fundamental algorithmic improvements more readily apparent. A lot of what Knuth has done in fundamental analysis of algorithms has, it seems to me, a very similar flavour, and I can easily imagine that in a parallel universe, Knuth might perhaps have chosen Forth as his computing model. That's the software / algorithms / programming side of things. When it comes to "ideal computing machines", Knuth in the 70s came up with the MIX computer model, and then, collaborating with designers of state-of-the-art RISC chips through the 90s, updated this with the modern MMIX model and its attendant assembly language MMIXAL. Meanwhile, Moore, having been using and refining Forth as a language, but using it on top of whatever processor happened to be in the computer he was programming, began to imagine a world in which the efficiency and value of stack-based programming were reflected in hardware. So he went on in the 80s to develop his own stack-based hardware chips, defining the term MISC (Minimal Instruction Set Computers) along the way, and ending up eventually with the first Forth chip, the MuP21. Both are brilliant men with keen insight into the art of programming and algorithms, and both work at the intersection between algorithms, programs, and bare metal hardware (i.e. hardware without the clutter of operating systems). Which leads me to the headlined question... Question:To what extent is it known (or believed) that Chuck Moore and Don Knuth had influence on each other's thoughts on ideal machines, or their work on algorithms?

  • TypeScript or JavaScript for noob web developer [closed]

    - by Phil Murray
Following the recent release by Microsoft of TypeScript I was wondering if this is something that should be considered for a experienced WinForm and XAML developer looking to get into more web development. From reviewing a number of sites and videos online it appears that the type system for TypeScript makes more sense to me as a thick client developer than the dynamic type system in Javascript. I understand that Typescript compiles down to JavaScript but it appears that the learning curve is shallower due to the current tooling provided by Microsoft. What are your thoughts?

  • Problem with user generated content

    - by grasshopper
In general, what do you think is better in regards to adding content to a site, to allow users to add content to the site and put a flag button to report it if it doesn't fit with the site, or should only I add the content and remove that option? It will be a small site but I don't know if I'll manage to scan the site constantly or deal with the flags and on the other hand I'm worried that the site wont move forward because there will be lot less content, thoughts?

  • Advice for a getting a job in algorithmic trading - writing faster code

    - by Alex
I am currently an intermediate Java developer working in the financial industry. I am considering trying to get into an algorithmic trading developer position. I am looking for any advice/resources that may help me obtain such a job. My naive initial thoughts are to concentrate on learning how to write faster, more memory efficient code whilst maintaining readability. Can anyone point me in the right direction of some useful resources for what I am aiming to achieve?
