• Recommendations for supporting both Oracle and MSSQL in the same ASP.NET app with NHibernate

  Our client wants to support both SQLServer and Oracle in the next project. Our experience comes from .NET/SQL Server platform. We will hire an Oracle developer, but our concern is with the DataAccess code. Will NHibernate make the DB Engine transparent for us? I don't think so, but i would like to hear from developers who have faced similar situations. I know this question is a little vague, because i don't have Oracle experience, so i don't know what issues we will find.

• Using LINQ to query database through a proxy server of some kind?

  Hey All Sorry for using (perhaps) the wrong lingo, but my question may be clearer if you view this diagram as you read it. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13256/DIAGRAM.PNG Our client is requiring us to adhere to the server configuration (poorly) diagrammed in the above image. The web server is accessible over port 80 and is where our web application is hosted - a second firewall permits this web server to access a second server which in turn is the only server permitted to access the database server. My question is: How do I deploy a web application that uses LINQ-to-SQL in this environment? Is there a way to proxy my LINQ queries through the app server so that the database connection goes through that server? This is uncharted territory for me, as we always have had access to the DB server directly from our web server in the past. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Mustafa

• Performance logging tips

  I am developing large data collecting ASP.Net/Windows service application-pair that uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005 through LINQ2Sql. Performance is always the issue. Currently the application is divided into multiple larger processing parts, each logging the duration of their work. This is not detailed and does not help us with anything. It would be nice to have some database tables that contain statistics that the application itself collected from its own behavior. What logging tips and data structures do you recommend to spot the parts that cause performance problems?

• SQLServer 2008 Pivot

  I need to show some information in a graph, the data is held in a SQL Server 2008 table. The graph is expecting 2 columns, one for QuestionNumber and the other for Score. The table containing the data has column names that correspond to the question numbers ie A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, B3, B4, C1, C2. Each question is given a score of 1 to 5. I need to show a graph where the X axis shows A1, A2, A3 etc and the Y axis shows the score. I'm thinking I somehow need to rotate the data to achive this, but I'm not sure how. Maybe a different technique can acheive this rather that a Rotate, so I'm open to any ideas.

  I need some T-SQL that will show missing records. Here is some sample data: Emp 1 01/01/2010 02/01/2010 04/01/2010 06/01/2010 Emp 2 02/01/2010 04/01/2010 05/01/2010 etc... I need to know Emp 1 is missing 03/01/2010 05/01/2010 Emp 2 is missing 01/01/2010 03/01/2010 06/01/2010 The range to check will start with todays date and go back 6 months. In this example, lets say today's date is 06/12/2010 so the range is going to be 01/01/2010 thru 06/01/2010. The day is always going to be the 1st in the data. • Sqlite: CURRENT_TIMESTAMP is in GMT, not the timezone of the machine

  I have a sqlite (v3) table with this column definition: "timestamp" DATETIME DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP The server that this database lives on is in the CST time zone. When I insert into my table without including the timestamp column, sqlite automatically populates that field with the current timestamp in GMT, not CST. Is there a way to modify my insert statement to force the stored timestamp to be in CST? On the other hand, it is probably better to store it in GMT (in case the database gets moved to a different timezone, for example), so is there a way I can modify my select SQL to convert the stored timestamp to CST when I extract it from the table?   I'm writing a multiuser application (.NET - C#) in which each user's data is separated from the others and there is no data that's common between users. It's critical to ensure that no user has access to another user's data. What are some approaches for implementing security at the database level and/or in the application architecture to to accomplish this? For example (and this is totally made up - I'm not suggesting it's a good or bad approach) including a userID column in all data tables might be an approach. I'm developing the app in C# (asp.net) and SQL Server 2008. I'm looking for options that are are either native in the tools I'm using or general patterns.

• VARCHAR does not work as expected in Apache Derby

  I'm having this same problem: How can I truncate a VARCHAR to the table field length AUTOMATICALLY in Derby using SQL? To be specific: CREATE TABLE A ( B VARCHAR(2) ); INSERT INTO A B VALUES ('1234'); would throw a SQLException: A truncation error was encountered trying to shrink VARCHAR '123' to length 2. that is already answered: No. You should chop it off after checking the meta-data. Or if you don't wanna check the meta-data everytime, then you must keep both your code and database in sync. But thats not a big deal, its a usual practice in validators. but my doubt is: isn't VARCHAR suppose to variate its size to fit the data? What's wrong with apache derby's VARCHAR?

We are storing the hash and the binary file in a SQL DB. This works fine when we upload the same instance of a file. But when we save a new instance of the file from the DB (with today's date as the create/modify) on the file-system and then check the new hash versus the MD5 stored in the DB they do not match, and therefor fail a duplicate check. How can we check for a file hash excluding the file attributes? or is there a different issue here?

• How to include associative table information and still retain strong typing

  I am using LINQ to SQL to create strongly typed objects in my project. Let's say I have an object that is represented by a database table. This object has a "Current State" that is kept in an associative table. I would like to make a single db call where I pull back the two tables joined but am unsure how I should be populating that information into some sort of object to preserve strong typing within my model so that the view using the information can just consume the information from the objects. I looked into creating a view model for this but it doesn't seem to quite fit. Am I thinking about this in the wrong way? What information can I include to help clarify my problem? Other details that may or may not be important: It's an MVC project....

• Can't Add LINQ to SQL classes to projects in VS2010

  I just ran into something in Visual Studio 2010 RC that wasn't previously happening (like, yesterday). No software changes here, but I did run into some muck yesterday when compiling that required a reboot. I am unable to add LINQ to SQL classes to any project through the add dialog. I have created ASP.NET web sites, ASP.NET MVC projects - both of these as 'templated' and as 'empty' - and there appear to be no templates installed or available. I have made sure that the project targets the 4.0 Framework. I can easily add a new database and the ADO.NET entity framework templates are there. As a workaround I can copy a DBML file to my project, delete all tables and sprocs, update the connection string and use the leftover shell (the designer works fine like this), but it's a pain. Has anyone else had their templates drop? Figured out how to reinstall them?

• What is the problem with the logic in my UPDATE statement?

  Hello, I would appreciate some help with an UPDATE statement. I want to update tblOrderHead with the content from tblCustomer where the intDocumentNo corresponds to the parameter @intDocumentNo. But when I run the my statement, the order table is only updated with the content from the first row of the customer table. What is the problem with my logic? I use Microsoft SQL Server. • Changing a table-valued function that a stored procedure calls is not recognized?

  Hey all I have a stored procedure sp that calls a table-valued function tvf. Sometimes I modify the tvf but when subsequently executing sp, the output from sp is the same as before the modification. It seems like it is cached or compiled or something. If I make some dummy change to the sp, then I get the right output of the sp. Is there some way, I can overcome this problem? In Oracle it is possible to re-compile all stored procedures, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do this in SQL Server? Any help is highly appreciated.

  I need to quickly replace a listings website which has the following characteristics: smallish database (10,000 items, < 1GB) < 10% of the items updated/created/removed daily most common activity is searching the whole dataset, returning 1-1000 items traffic peaks at 1m page impressions per day Scaling strategy for the existing app has been to separate read-only and read/write activity. Multiple slave databases are used for searching and writes are done to a master, which update the slaves using MS SQL replication. Since read activity is more common than write, this has proved to be a cheap way to do database load balancing, without true clustering. I now need to replace the app - are there any C# open-source apps which scale as neatly as this?

• DBLinq not generating where clause

  I'm testing out DBLinq-0.18 and DBLinq from SVN Trunk with MySQL and Postgresql. I'm only using a very simple query but on both database DBLinq is not generating a Where clause. I have confirmed this by turning on statement logging on Postgresql to check exactly what request DBLinq is sending. My Linq query is: MyDB db = new MyDB(new NpgsqlConnection("Database=database;Host=localhost;User Id=postgres;Password=password")); var customers = from customer in db.Customers where customer.CustomerUserName == "test" select customer; The query works ok but the SQL generated by DBLinq is of the form: select customerusername, customerpassword .... from public.customers There is no Where clause which means DBLinq must be pulling the whole table down before running the Linq query. Has anyone had any experience with DBLinq and know what I could be doing wrong?

  I am dealing with an interesting situation where I perform many database updates in a single transaction. If these updates fail for any reason, the transaction is rolled-back. IDbTransaction transaction try { transaction = connection.BeginTransaction(); // do lots of updates (where at least one fails) transaction.Commit(); } catch { transaction.Rollback(); // results in a timeout exception } finally { connection.Dispose(); } I believe the above code is generally considered the standard template for performing database updates within a transaction. The issue I am facing is that whilst transaction.Rollback() is being issued to SQL Server, it is also timing out on the client. Is there anyway of distinguishing between a timeout to issue the rollback command and a timeout on that command executing to completion? Thanks in advance, Ben

• Firewall will not play ball

  I'm running SQL Server 2008 Express on a windows 2012... or at least I'm trying to :) My problem is that I have opened the ports I thought I needed but still I cant manage to connect to the database from Visual Studio. As proof I have a screenshot of my firewall settings: Everything works fine if I turn the firewall off, but who wants that while connected to the internet? So I wonder what the heck is wrong? • HSQLDB Constraint Violation & SQL Query Log for an HSQLDB in-memory setup

  We have a setup where we are using an embedded HSQLDB for backing Hibernate/JPA unit tests in java, and we are using the in-memory database mode since we simply want the database thrown away after the test run. My problem is that one of the tests is failing due to a constraint violation and HSQLDB lists the column as SYS_CT_286, and the query that appears in the log is the prepared statement where I cant see what the actual parameter values are (they are replaced by '?'). My questions are: 1- Is there a way in which I can see the actual SQL being executed? (like the mysql query log for example?). 2- What exactly is SYS_CT_286? it is not one of my columns, is it a generated column? is there something obvious that may be wrong with it? Thanks.

• Visual Studio 2010 Database Projects: Are there any videos/tutorials or comments about the new Datab

  I have recently upgraded to Visual Studio 2010. I have kept database projects separate to application projects. The database project was converted from and old DPR project and added a whole lot of additional folder. I deleted those, but now I suspect I need to recreate the project as these new projects work very differently. Now that I have need to update scripts, it seems I can even paste new SQL files into the project so am a bit stuck. Are there any tutorials / walkthrough that show the basics on starting and creating a database project? Or even better a video? Also if there are any tips and tricks or comments on this, I will be happy to hear them?

  Is it possible for two or more ASP.NET MVC sites to use a single SQL Server database for authentication and other things? Here's how I'm thinking of setting it up: I will combine the current database of each site into one single database, prefixing the tables with the name of the site they belong to. I currently have authentication tables generated by the asp.net_regsql.exe utility. How should I combine those tables? I'm guessing that the way to do it is to somehow set the "application_id" column in those tables... Thanks in advance.
