Arguments for discouraging satellite sites?

I am working with a client who's read about satellite sites on a SEP book and has been building hundreds of keyword reach domains (buytoyotacorona1989cheap.com, brandnewsuvinred.com) with specific content about such domains. They all link to a main domain (CompanyName.com) where most of the information is either repeated(from other sites) or new. I told him to drop all the other domains and only focus on building good content for the main site as it is too difficult to maintain so many websites, plus they might look like link farms to Google. He told me to make a Google search for "Buy Toyota cheap " and two of his websites were listed among top 10. So it's seem to be doing some good, but I get the feeling that what he is doing is wrong. What other arguments are there to discourage this practice? or is he doing the right thing? My arguments have helped him to decide go down from hundreds to close to one hundred (because cost of maintainance) but I believe he should only have one or two sites. PS: The business is not actually about cars.

It says 07-08 02:10:03.755: W/ActivityManager(60): Unable to start service Intent { act=com.google.android.c2dm.intent.REGISTER (has extras) }: not found in the logcat.

Debugging HTML & JavaScript with Firebug

I made a JSONP widget. However, when one of the partner sites put it in their page, (1) it doesn't render at all in IE and (2) in other browsers (Firefox & Google Chrome), the HTML of the widget renders incorrectly: the <aside> closes prematurely, before the Financial Aid Glossary. It's something specific to that page because it works fine on this example college resource center page. To fix these two issues, I tried saving the page source to a local file and messing around with the local file and with Firebug, deleting DOM elements and stuff. I even tried fixing the errors that The W3C Markup Validation Service found. But, I still couldn't get it to render correctly. How should I tell them to change their page so that the widget renders correctly? Or, how should I update the widget script I wrote? Windows 2012/IIS 8 + ASP.NET MVC Applicaiton 403.14 (Forbidden) - The Web server is configured to not list the contents

I have a very simple MVC 4 application I'm trying to deploy to a Windows 2012 server. Inconsistently, when navigating to the root of the web application (http://localhost/app), it returns a 403.14-Forbidden: Detailed Error Information: Module: DirectoryListingModule Notification: ExecuteRequestHandler Handler: StaticFile Error Code: 0x00000000 Requested URL: http://localhost:80/test1/ Physical Path: c:\apps\test1\ Logon Method: Negotiate The web application is: Is a very vanilla VS2012 MVC4 Intranet template -- with only a tweak to a label to prove things were working. runs in an Integrated v4.0 application pool setup to use Windows authentication application pool has a custom AD Identity assigned (so it can gain access to a SQL server) application pool identity has read permissions in the c:\apps\test1 folder in which it is running It's an MVC4 application, targeting .NET 4.0 currently -There's no default document in an MVC4 application (like a default.aspx), as there shouldn't need to be one. I don't want to enable directory listings (as that's not the real error). Installed: Roles / Web Server (IIS) / Appliation Development / (.NET 4.5 Extensibility, Application Initialization, ASP.NET 4.5, ISAP Extensions, ISAPI Filters, WebSocket Protocol) Works locally on my machine in IISExpress on Windows 8 Has configured in web.config: <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" /> is set to precompiled during publish When I change the precompiled option to false, the web application does not fail (in my testing at least, it seems to work consistently). The reason I say it's inconsistent is that I've seen it work, then I've published, and the error returns. I can't find a pattern to the issue (and right now, I haven't been able to get it work again, at all). The 403 is returned from a local or remote web browser. I've had trouble finding a solution that isn't intended for older versions of Windows (like suggestions to reinstall ASP.NET which won't work on Windows 2012). I really don't know what else to try.

rpm file conflict after alien conversion

I have a program for which I generate a .deb file. The .deb file works fine on the systems I have tried it on (also tested with lintian). Previously it has worked to use alien to convert this to .rpm and install it on Suse. How can we configure the Bitnami Joomla stack to open a socket on startup?

I have deployed the Bitnami Ubuntu Joomla! 3.1.5-2 (64-bit) stack on Amazon Cloud: http://bitnami.com/stack/joomla/cloud/amazon By default, the stack is configured to run PHP using PHP-FPM. I have no problem getting the Joomla and phpmyadmin running as virtual hosts on Apache. But now, I would like to add another virtual host. Windows Authentication behaves oddly when VPN'd

Hi all We've got a few apps that rely on windows authentication - a couple of web apps with AD auth turned on and we usually connect to our SQL servers with windows auth. This normally runs without a hitch. It doesn't work so well if we're VPN'd to a client site though. SSMS Opening SSMS normally from the start menu, then picking a server that normally accepts windows auth, results in a message saying: Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) If I drop to a command prompt and use runas /user:domain\user to launch SSMS I can successfully windows auth to our SQL server instances with that ssms process. If I look in task manager, both copies of ssms.exe (start menu vs runas) have the same user, and I can see no discernible differences between the processes in procexp. AD Auth websites If I open IE and browse to any of our websites that require an authenticated windows user, I get the "who are you" prompt, and that dialog thinks I'm whoever the VPN user is. I can click "Use another account" and authenticate that way though. Outlook Even Outlook prompts for a username when we are VPN'd! It's affecting our Win7 and Vista machines. It's been a while since we had an XP box, but I don't recall having this issue on XP for what it's worth. The VPN connections are just using the built in windows VPN connections, they're not fancy cisco VPNs or anything of that nature. Does anyone know how to tell windows that I'd like to be my normal old primary domain user rather than the VPN user when authenticating to resources in our domain? Heck, I'd be happy with a solution that prompted me with the "who are you" if I was trying to access windows auth requiring resources on the client's VPN. Thanks! Apologies if this is more a superuser question, I wasn't sure which site it best suited. It's about networking and infrastructure and plagues all of our developers here, so I hope it's a serverfault Q.

Remote Sending of Emails via SMTP/EXIM Issue

I have been encountering a problem when sending messages via EXIM. Here is the scenario: I have 2 servers lets just say host1.com = where all my apps and programs are hosted. host2.com = is another server which handles some apps but is also my smtp mail server. whm and cpanel are installed in both hosts as well as exim. right now, messages are being sent out as [email protected] to clients. host1.com uses the [email protected] so that it can send messages outbound as well. here's the problem, after a few hours from a fresh reboot of host1.com, sending messages from host1.com is no longer possible because i encounter an error that states: system/vendor/swift/Swift/Connection/SMTP.php [309]: The SMTP connection failed to start [tls://mail.host2.com]: fsockopen returned Error Number 110 and Error String 'Connection timed out'` also note that this was working fine earlier (like 10 hours ago) but then it suddenly fails. everytime i restart the host1.com then sending messages will work again. i have checked logs and traces but to no avail the only means of fixing this problem is restarting host1.com.

How can MySQL be in GDAL's dependencies when it's already installed?

I'm trying to install GDAL on my CentOS 64 bits server to be able to make some GIS operations. I tried a simple: # yum install gdal First, the GDAL version is 1.4 (the last released one is 1.9) Then, I see in the dependencies list mysql. But I have mysql already installed, from another repository (remi), with a newer version than the one suggested by yum... Is it a problem of architecture (yum suggests i386)? I risked a yes, but still impossible to install it! Here's the error I have. Removing SCIM input method as default from gnome terminal

Hello - I am recently back into the Linux world after about a 10 year absence. While I can find my way around most things, terminals and desktop managers are different than I remember. One of the biggest problems that I am encountering today is that when running a gnome terminal (this is Suse 10.0 enterprise), I'm getting behavior in the window that I don't want. Specifically, when I type, my typing is underlined as if something is trying to spell check my window. Further, it seems as if when running vi or less, my keystrokes are only processed by these apps when I hit 'return'. I.e. if I'm running less and want to go back a page, I'll hit b, but nothing happens until I hit 'return'. I seem to have tracked this down to the 'input method". Right clicking in the Gnome terminal allows me to set my input method to one of a dozen values. It seems that currently, it's set to "SCIM Input Method". If I then select 'default' or 'X Input Method', apps (i.e. things like less, vi, and even the bash shell) behave as I would expect. Can someone tell me a) what is this SCIM input method b) how can I make it so that it is not the default? I've poked around various configuration files in my home directory as well as in /etc, but I can't see to find how this is set. I guess as a final question, can I just get rid of SCIM? Or is that tied into the window manager somehow? I do appreciate any clarifications that I can get. Thanks.

Linux group permissions getting overwritten by owner

I am not a user of Linux, but I am encountering some permissions problems with it that I hope someone can shed some light on. Bit of background: A colleague of mine has a Linux box (running Debian I believe) with an SVN repository on it. The repository directory and files 'owner' is my colleauge. We are both members of a group called 'users'. He manages several projects both Linux and Windows apps, while I have one Windows app. For the Windows apps, we both use TortoiseSVN via an SSH link to commit/update. Performing the command 'ls -l' shows the repository files and folders on the Linux box to have the following permissions: -rwxrwx--- john users However, when my colleauge commits to the repository, the permissions change to: -rwxrwx--- john john This then means I get 'Permission denied' when trying to access the repository myself as it appears that the group permissions have been overwritten with only 'owner' permissions. To fix this, a 'chown -R' command is applied to the files/folders to set the permissions back to owner/group, but each time he writes to the repository, the issue repeats. I'm not sure if this is solely an SVN problem, or a more fundamental owner/group issue. Anyone any clue on how to stop this happening, or where to go and look? I'm trying to help out my colleague who is having some trouble resolving this issue. Apologies for the vague info, I hope I have conveyed the problem clear enough. Like I say, I am not a Linux user, I have only put down what I have managed to pick up from looking over his shoulder. Thanks for any pointers I can pass on!

Apache, suexec, PHP, suPHP

While I'm quite comfortable as a Linux user, my Linux Admin-fu is a bit weak. Thus, I'm here looking for guidance with a CentOS server I'm about to build. I need to setup an Apache2 web server for a few of our clients. I want each client's web content to be under their home directory (USERDIR in apache.conf, right?) for the static HTML sites. I want Apache to run as the client (suexec?). Some of their stuff will be PHP apps and I'm under the impression I'll want to look at suphp as well then. So basically I want to look like a small version of a shared web hosting company. Considering how common those are I thought I'd easily find a nice current How-To guide on setting this all up but so far I've had very little luck. I suspect my search words are off. So the questions (feel free to answer any or all): Anyone have some solid links to current/modern guides that would help me set this all up? No, the apache documentation site is not a guide ;-) Since I have a mix of static sites and PHP apps do I want/need both suexec and suphp installed? If so, does that introduce any challenges I should be aware of? Should I be looking at other options instead of suexec and suphp? I plan to give the end users SSH, SFTP or SCP access to their stuff (if that affects anything). Thanks in advance for your help.

Tuning Windows 7 for use in a VM

I'm running Windows 7 in a VirtualBox Virtual Machine, and would like to make it run in a more streamlined fashion. I'll be using the install primarily for testing web apps, and have no need for it to run quickly. I would like it to run with minimal memory requirements, and with minimal changes to its virtual hard drive's contents. Changes to the hard drive contents, for example the paging file, result in larger snapshot sizes. Another recent post of mine seems to be related to this issue, but does not directly address issues with Windows. One concern that I have is that Windows seems to be using 17% of its paging file even with over 900MB of memory marked "Standby" or "Free". My uneducated guess is that this is being used to store indexes or some other data that helps to speed up the system but is not really necessary. I'm also wondering if it's normal for Windows to use over 500 MB of "In Use" memory with no apps running. Will this amount decrease if I reduce the amount of "installed" memory in the VM? What steps can I take to reduce the system's memory footprint without incurring an increase in paging file usage?

How can I debug user mode driver failures in Windows 8

I have a 32 GB SD Card. Whenever I insert this card in to my newly upgraded Windows 8 laptop the OS stops responding normally. Metro Apps won't work. The system may or may not log in. Desktop apps may or may not be able to do things. When I remove the card and restart then all is fine. As soon as I put the card back in, the system starts misbehaving again. I've run Windows Update, so I have the latest drivers from Microsoft. This does not occur with the 8 GB cards I have. Unfortunately I only have one 32 GB card, so I can't test with others. From examining the system event log I've determined this is happening due to a user mode driver failure. How can I best debug this issue from here? How can I figure out which driver this is related to? Will there be a Dr. Watson crash dump somewhere? The article Refresh and reset your PC mentions exactly what happens during the refresh and reset operations in Windows 8: Refresh The PC boots into Windows RE. Windows RE scans the hard drive for your data, settings, and apps, and puts them aside (on the same drive). Windows RE installs a fresh copy of Windows. Windows RE restores the data, settings, and apps it has set aside into the newly installed copy of Windows. The PC restarts into the newly installed copy of Windows. Reset The PC boots into the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE). Windows RE erases and formats the hard drive partitions on which Windows and personal data reside. Windows RE installs a fresh copy of Windows. The PC restarts into the newly installed copy of Windows. It is my understanding that Windows RE (Recovery Environment) is included as part of the System Reserved partition created by default on the first hard disk. The size of this partition has gone up to 350 MB from the 100 MB it used to be in Vista/Windows 7, no doubt as a result of adding these features. Now we have already discussed how to skip the creation of this System Reserved partition during Setup. Basically, the same techniques that used to work with Windows 7 work with Windows 8 as well. What I want to know is, what will be the exact repercussions of not having the System Reserved partition in place? I assume Troubleshoot / Advanced options should still be available as before: But what about the Troubleshoot menu itself? Will the Refresh and Reset options disappear? Will they remain but be unavailable? Or possibly they will throw an error if selected? Also, will it be possible to access and successfully execute these options if installation media is available? Anything else that might be affected?

Windows 7 - mysteriously missing free HDD space

I have Windows7 installed on 50GB (Oops, it should have been 45GB, sorry) partition, and every now and then it gets full, and I have to resize that partition. I always thought it is quite normal. But it happened again today and this time, I'm sure it is not normal, because since last resizing (35GB 45GB) I did not install any new apps or whatever. Also, sum of sizes off all, including hidden & system, root folders and files is ~18GB, yet windows is indicating that all 50GB are used up... Any idea what is going on? EDIT: Great tools everyone! (SourceForge appears to be offline at the moment, I'll check WinDirStat later) Alas, non of them solved my problem just yet... Screenshot from SpaceSniffer: On the right there is some kind of "Unknows Space", any idea what that could be? EDIT2: After those two apps failing to help much I didn't expect it, but WinDirStat actually helped. It showed that those missing 27GB are in my Temp folder (Well, that should have been my first guess anyway). There I found hundreds of ~100MB files, named like HTT????.tmp. After some googling it appears to be a problem with ESET NOD32 antivirus and it's ThreatSense feature. Thank you all for help! :)

Are applications optimized for XenApp?

Our IT dept are about to deploy virtualized apps using Citrix XenApp. One of these apps will be Dynamics AX 4.0 SP2, a ERP client (which I develop on). They have supposedly reached a roadblock because an external 'Dynamics AX Consultant' has told our IT Dept that Dynamics 4 will not work optimally on Citrix and will run very slow because it is not optimized for Citrix. We have it running in a Test environment now and seems ok. They have been told that the only 'solution' is to upgrade to Dynamics AX 2009 where supposedly this problem as been fixed. (not a small task for my team!) When I heard about this, I was quite surprised. From my brief knowledge of Citrix, I thought it would be application independent. How does the citrix app virtualization work, in that a particular app would work better than others on citrix? Would the speed of the virtualized app not just depend on the resources/network connection the citrix server has? FYI, Dynamics AX is a 3-tier client/server system, so the client will be accessing a AOS application server, which then accesses the database. Please enlighten me :)

Can gnome windows (in Ubuntu) be individually themed?

(Yes, "individually themed" is an oxymoron, but I still want it.) I've just moved from Windows to Ubuntu Linux, and although I am enjoying this new adventure playground, I've encountered something quite unexpected... and its bugging me. It is probably because there are so many gnome apps in Ubuntu (... how strange :) This is great. and the range of available apps is excellent! ...but because of this one-stop-shop scenario, most of the windows look remarkably similar. I'm certainly not after bling-maximus, but I would like a few differentiating colours for my not-so-young eyes to help identify an app at a glance (especially in the compiz lists) ... I love compiz :) I thought it was just a bit of razzle-dazzle, and that alone would be enough, but it is actually very practical to boot. So, basically, I'm wondering if there is a way to theme individual window components on a per app basis... especially the window decoration; menu bar, etc. Thanks.

Need help diagnosing my machine

I have something that just slows my computer to a crawl sometimes. Not running anything big. Yesterday all I had running (besides background apps) were Firefox & Windows Explorer and could barely even switch screens. Nothing showing up in the task manager as hogging CPUs. I have all non-essential services stopped (MySQl & MSSQL) unless I need them. I made some restore points not long ago, but they disappeared. This is a development mach with a LOT of apps installed, so I really, really do not want to re-install Windows. So, what I'm looking for are ideas or tools I can use to help diagnose this problem. The only clues I have is this started right after I installed Office 2013 (with Office 2010 still installed as well) installed Visual Studio 2012 (also keeping 2010 as a co-install) and installed MSSQL 2012 (upgrade from 2008, no co-install) Also, computer runs fine in Safe Mode. I've just ran out of ideas of what to check. Any help / suggestions would much appreciated. Thanks P.S. I'm running Win 7 Pro (x64). Office is also 64 bit. Visual Studio & MSSQL are 64 bit if that option was available (not sure).
