• wcf trying to set up tracing to debug, not writing to log file

  here's my web.config, running a WCF service in an application on IIS7, but nothing is being written to the specified file. permission on the file has been granted for everyone. </listeners> I can add a service reference just fine. I then try to call the service from a windows app and, after a few minutes, get an error on the machine running the windows app "Client is unable to finish the security negotiation within the configured timeout (00:00:00). The current negotiation leg is 1 (00:00:00)." but absolutely nothing is written to the trace log file specified in config. Is there something else I need to do to enable tracing? thanks for your help EDIT: "sources" section now matches the section recommended here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa702726.aspx I've added the "diagnostics and the event viewer shows: "Message Logging has been turned on. • ASP.net file operations delay

  Ok, so here's the problem: I'm reading the stream from a FileUpload control, reading in chunks of n bytes and writing the array in a loop until I reach the stream's end. Now the reason I do this is because I need to check several things while the upload is still going on (rather than doing a Save(); which does the whole thing in one go). Here's the problem: when doing this from the local machine, I can see the file just fine as it's uploading and its size increases (had to add a Sleep(); clause in the loop to actually get to see the file being written). However, when I upload the file from a remote machine, I don't get to see it until the the file has completed uploading. Also, I've added another call to write the progress to a text file as the progress is going on, and I get the same thing. Local: the file updates as the upload goes on, remote: the token file only appears after the upload's done (which is somewhat useless since I need it while the upload's still happening). Is there some sort of security setting in (or ASP.net) that maybe saves files in a temporary location for remote machines as opposed to the local machine and then moves them to the specified destination? I would liken this with ASP.net displaying error messages when browsing from the local machine (even on the public hostname) as opposed to the generic compilation error page/generic exception page that is shown when browsing from a remote machine (and customErrors are not off) Any clues on this? • Handle multiple db updates from c# in SQL Server 2008

  I like to find a way to handle multiple updates to a sql db (with one singe db roundtrip). I read about table-valued parameters in SQL Server 2008 http://www.codeproject.com/KB/database/TableValueParameters.aspx which seems really useful. But it seems I need to create both a stored procedure and a table type to use it. Is that true? Perhaps due to security? I would like to run a text query simply like this: var sql = "INSERT INTO Note (UserId, note) SELECT * FROM @myDataTable"; var myDataTable = ... some System.Data.DataTable ... var cmd = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand(sql, conn); var param = cmd.Parameters.Add("@myDataTable", System.Data.SqlDbType.Structured); param.Value=myDataTable; cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); So A) do I have to create both a stored procedure and a table type to use TVP's? and B) what alternative method is recommended to send multiple updates (and inserts) to SQL Server?

• Associate File Extension with Application

  I've written a program that edits a specific filetype , and I want to give the user the option to set my application as the default editor for this filetype (since I don't want an installer) on startup. • How to secure login and member area with SSL certificate?

  Background: I have a asp.net webapplication project that should contain a public and a member area. Now I want to implement a SSL decription to secure communication between the client and the server. (In the university we have a unsecured wireless network and you can use a wlan sniffer to read username/password. I do not want to have this security problem for my application, so I thought of a ssl decription) The application is running on a IIS 7.5. It it possible to have one webapp that has unsecured pages (like the public area) and a secured area (like the member area, which requires a login)? If yes, how can I relealise the communication between these too areas? Example: My webapp is hosted on http://foo.abc. I have pages like http://foo.abc/default.aspx and http://foo.abc/foo.aspx. In the same project is page like /member/default.aspx which is protected by a login on the page http://foo.abc/login.aspx. So I would need to implement SSL for the page /login.aspx and all pages in /member/ How can I do that? I just found out how to create SSL certificates in IIS 7.5 and how to add such a binding to a webapp. How how can I tell my webapp which page should be called with https and not with http. What is the best practise there?

• How do I create a new project in TFS from an existing project (breaking history)?

  My team is taking over a project from a previous team. We use a different TFS server than the original team, and we are also not interested in keeping the history of the project because we are accepting the latest version of the code as the beginning of our history with the project. Branching is not an option since we want to start our history from the current version of the code. We just want a fresh project with the existing code. I have not been able to create the new project from the old code successfully. I keep getting an error: "Source control cannot add the solution: Solution would span multiple workspaces" My process for attempting the new project creation: Create a workspace for the previous team's version of the code. Get latest version of that code into local mapped workspace directory Open the solution. Unbind all projects and solution. Close solution. Create a workspace for the new version of the code on our TFS server. Copy the unbound code on my local box to the new local workspace mapped folder. Open the solution from the new directory. "Add to source control" from the new solution. Then I get the error. I have tried removing the TFS security files out of the code directories in the unbound version and tried changing source control instead of adding to source control (but it just binds back to the original instead of letting me bind to the new). Is there any other way to do this besides recreating the solution/projects and adding back all the files and references? It doesn't seem like it should be this difficult... Any advice much appreciated!

• Javascript: I can get the text of a selection, now how do I get the text outside the selection?

  I have a bit of code that returns the text of a selection and I can assign that string to a variable, but now all I need are two variables, one for the text before the selection and one for the text after the selection. Here is the code for getting the selection: function findSelection(){ //returns the selection object. var userSelection; if (window.getSelection) {userSelection = window.getSelection();} // Mozilla Selection object. else if (document.selection){userSelection = document.selection.createRange();} //gets Microsoft Text Range, should be second b/c Opera has poor support for it. if (userSelection.text){return userSelection.text} //for Microsoft Objects. else {return userSelection} //For Mozilla Objects. } Then I find the anchorOffset and focusOffset to find the caret positions. I tried using these to modify a range object, like this: var range = document.createRange(); range.setStart(textdiv,0); range.setEnd(textdiv,5); Where textdiv is a variable holding the last div the user clicked on. The problem is firefox just gives me a "Security error" code: "1000" at the line range.setStart(textdiv,0);. Is there an easier way to go about doing this? I really just need the text and nothing more.

• Characters in usernames that cause trouble

  I am testing out security and reliability issues on my site. I have made \n and \r illegal. I created a user with null in the name which caused my PM system to not message the user. However \b worked and \t didnt allow copy/paste to work correctly. The browser (firefox which i am testing with) copied the tab as a single space causing the name not to be the same thus not recognizing the username. Since i cant copy paste easily i'll probably disallow it. \f works as well although i do see a symbol in the title but nowhere else because of the \f. What else should i try? It appears 0-31 127-159 (i dont understand this range) are illegal. What characters in legal range might i want to disallow? I heard there was a 0 width character space. That may be something i want to disallow? What else is there?

• Classloader issue (GWT)

  I'm currently working on a gwt app, where the server uses a few third party libs. recently I discovered that one of these libs isn't being properly loaded when running my app in deployed mode, and I just can't seem to figure out what out is I'm doing wrong. In my build script I have the following classpath declaration: <path id="project.class.path"> <pathelement location="${war.dir}/WEB-INF/classes"/> <fileset dir="${war.dir}/WEB-INF/lib" includes="**/*.jar"/> </path> and in a later target I copy the jar I need to the right location: <copy todir="${war.dir}/WEB-INF/lib" file="someJar.jar" /> The project builds as it should, without any errors. The jars are copied to where the should be, and are included in the resulting war file. In development mode everything is working as it should, everything gets loaded properly and I hear no complaints.   I've got a fully custom PHP site with a lot of database calls. I just got injection hacked. This little chunk of code below showed up in dozens of my PHP pages. <?php /**/ eval(base64_decode(big string of code.... I've been pretty careful about my SQL calls and such; they're all in this format: $query = sprintf("UPDATE Sales SET `Shipped`='1', `Tracking_Number`='%s' WHERE ID='%s' LIMIT 1 ;", mysql_real_escape_string($trackNo), mysql_real_escape_string($id)); $result = mysql_query($query); mysql_close(); For the record, I rarely use mysql_close() at the end though. That just happened to be the code I grabbed. I can't think of any places where I don't use mysql_real_escape_string(), (although I'm sure there's probably a couple. I'll be grepping soon to find out) There's also no places where users can put in custom HTML or anything. In fact, most of the user-accessible pages, if they use SQL calls at all, are almost inevitably "SELECT * FROM" pages that use a GET or POST, depending. Obviously I need to beef up my security, but I've never had an attack like this and I'm not positive what I should do. I've decided to put limits on all my inputs and go through looking to see if i missed a mysql_real_escape_string somewhere... Anybody else have any suggestions? Also... what does this type of code do? Why is it there?

• Opaque tenant identification with SQL Server & NHibernate

  Howdy! We're developing a nowadays-fashionable multi-tenanted SaaS app (shared database, shared schema), and there's one thing I don't like about it: public class Domain : BusinessObject { public virtual long TenantID { get; set; } public virtual string Name { get; set; } } The TenantID is driving me nuts, as it has to be accounted for almost everywhere, and it's a hassle from security standpoint: what happens if a malicious API user changes TenantID to some other value and will mix things up. What I want to do is to get rid of this TenantID in our domain objects altogether, and to have either NHibernate or SQL Server deal with it. From what I've already read on the Internets, this can be done with CONTEXT_INFO (here's a NHibernatebased implementation), NHibernate filters, SQL Views and with combination thereof. Now, my requirements are as follows: Remove any mentions of TenantID from domain objects ...but have SQL Server insert it where appropriate (I guess this is achieved with default constraints) ...and obviously provide support for filtering based on this criteria, so that customers will never see each other's data If possible, avoid SQL Server views. Have a solution which plays nicely with NHibernate, SQL Servers' MARS and general nature of SaaS apps being highly concurrent What are your thoughts on that?

• PHP in Wordpress Posts - Is this okay?

  I've been working with some long lists of information and I've come up with a good way to post it in various formats on my wordpress blog posts. I installed the exec-PHP plugin, which allows you to run php in posts. I then created a new table (NEWTABLE) in my wordpress database and filled that table with names, scores, and other stuff. I was then able to use some pretty simple code to display the information in a wordpress post. Below is an example, but you could really do whatever you wanted. My question is - is there a problem with doing this? with security? or memory? I could just type out all the information in each post, but this is really much nicer. • How can I get back my privilege to create a new database in MySQL?

  I can not use MySQL. MySQL is on my local computer. Currently I added skip-grant-tables in My.ini so I can use MySQL. But I have no privilege to create a new database. My problem is tough, although I asked related questions on SO, but no answer can resolve my problem. I almost give up. So I lower my expectation. I am developing a website, so I need to create database, tables and operate tables. You don't have to consider security. Is there a simple solution that can give me privilege to create a new database? Maybe by adding some command in my.ini or something? You won't need to completely resolve my problem. Maybe after the development, I will upload the database and tables to another server(The current database server is my personal computer, windows XP) so I can uninstall and reinstall MySQL. The root of problem is that I lack privileges.

• Destroy process-less console windows left by Visual Studio debug sessions

  A known bug with security update KB978037 can occur with Visual Studio 2003 (and 2008) where sometimes if you restart a debugging session on a console app then the console window doesn't get closed even though the owner process no longer exists. The problem is discussed further here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2402875/visual-studio-debug-console-sometimes-stays-open-and-is-impossible-to-close These zombie windows then can not be closed via the Taskbar or via the TaskManager, and typically require a power off/on to get rid of them. Over the period of even a single day you can accumulate quite a few of them, which clog up your TaskBar and are generally annoying. I thought I would knock up a simple C++ Win32 utility to attempt to call DestroyWindow() on these windows by passing the windows handle as a cmd-line argument and converting it to a HWND. I'm converting the handle from a string by parsing it as a DWORD then casting the DWORD to a HWND. This appears to be working as if I call GetWindowInfo() on the handle it succeeds. However calling DestroyWindow() on the handle fails with error 5 (access denied), presumably because the caller process (i.e. my app) doesn't own the window in question. Any ideas as to how I might get rid of the zombie windows, either via the above approach or any other alternative short of rebooting? I'm in a corporate environment so installing/uninstalling updates/service-packs etc isn't an option.

• Second Thread Holding Up Entire Program in C# Windows Form Application

  In my windows form application, I'm trying to test the user's ability to access a remote machine's shared folder. The way I'm doing this (and I'm sure that there are better ways...but I don't know of them) is to check for the existence of a specific directory on the remote machine (I'm doing this because of firewall/other security restrictions that I'm confronted with in my organization). If the user has rights to access the shared folder, then it returns in no time at all, but if they don't, it hangs forever. To solve this, I threw the check into another thread and wait only 1000 milliseconds before determining that the share can't be hit by the user. However, when I do this, it still hangs as if it was never run in the same thread. What is making it hang and how do I fix it? I would think that the fact that it is in a separate thread would allow me to just let the thread finish on it's own in the background. • "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON" error in Windows 7 (ASP.NET & Web Service)

  I have an asp.net web app which works fine in Windows XP machine in a domain. I am porting it to a Windows 7 stand alone machine. The app uses a web service which makes a call to sql server. The web server (IIS 7.5) and SQL Server are on the same stand alone machine. I enabled Windows authentication for the website and web service. The web service uses a trusted connection connection string. The web service credentials uses System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. I noticed username, password and domainname are blank after the call! The webservice and web site use an application pool with identity "Network Service". I am getting an exception "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON" in the database call in the web service. I am assuming it's related to the blank credentials. I am expecting ASPNET user to be the security token to the database. Why is this not happening? (Usually this happens when sql server and web server are on two different machines in a domain, delegation & double hopping, but in my case everything is on a dev box)

• How to best future proof my application that needs to connect to Outlook?

  I have a contact management application written in Delphi which has a “Sync with Outlook” feature that I developed 10 years ago. Now, I’m going back to add some features and fix some bugs. This sync feature uses the Outlook object model to get started, but it has an optional mode called “Use MAPI Enhancements” where it uses pure MAPI to speed up how it looks for changes, and it allows notes to be synced w/ RTF instead of just plain text. I'm wondering if supporting two parallel paths of execution is a good idea or not. If I went with all MAPI, I believe I'd avoid some security prompts, and I'd avoid situations where anti-virus has "script-blocking" features which block my app from connecting to Outlook. But I believe that on the down side, my 32-bit app would not be able to to connect with 64-bit Outlook 2010 using MAPI. And I wonder about the future of MAPI in general. If I stick with the Outlook object model, will my 32-bit app be able to connect to the Outlook object model (since it's out of process COM)? If so, this is a compelling reason to keep my Outlook object model execution path in place. But if not, and if my app needs to be compiled for x64, then why not just go with pure MAPI?

  Like many architects, I've developed coding standards through years of experience to which I expect my developers to adhere. This is especially a problem with the crowd that believes that three or four years of experience makes you a senior-level developer.Approaching this as a training and code review issue has generated limited success. So, I was thinking that it would be great to be able to add custom compile-time errors to the build process to more strictly enforce this and other guidelines. For instance, we use stored procedures for ALL database access, which provides procedure-level security, db encapsulation (table structure is hidden from the app), and other benefits. (Note: I am not interested in starting a debate about this.) Some developers prefer inline SQL or parametrized queries, and that's fine - on their own time and own projects. I'd like a way to add a compilation check that finds, say, anything that looks like string sql = "insert into some_table (col1,col2) values (@col1, @col2);" and generates an error or, in certain circumstances, a warning, with a message like Inline SQL and parametrized queries are not permitted. Or, if they use the var keyword var x = new MyClass(); Variable definitions must be explicitly typed. Do Visual Studio and MSBuild provide a way to add this functionality? I'm thinking that I could use a regular expression to find unacceptable code and generate the correct error, but I'm not sure what, from a performance standpoint, is the best way to to integrate this into the build process. We could add a pre- or post-build step to run a custom EXE, but how can I return line- and file-specifc errors? Also, I'd like this to run after compilation of each file, rather than post-link. Is a regex the best way to perform this type of pattern matching, or should I go crazy and run the code through a C# parser, which would allow node-level validation via the parse tree? I'd appreciate suggestions and tales of prior experience.

Through Synaptic Package Manager I am have installed the mysql version: mysql-client-5.1 I wonder that how was the database password set for the mysql-client software that I installed through the above way.It would be nice if you could enlighten me on this. • With the advent of HTML 5, is there a point in using COMET anymore?

  I am very tempted to use long wait http or periodic polling by the client to set up pseudo-sockets on the browser side, for an application that would be used publicly. But then on the 2nd thought, I am thinking HTML 5 is here. But on the 3rd thought, what is the percentage of browsers out there that remain non-HTML5 within 12 months, 24 months, 36 months? If there are at least 20% of browsers still incapable of HTML5, then I cannot depend on HTML5 because 20% of users not being able to access an application is a significant amount. What do you think, how would your advice be (to me and to developers in general)? Q1. Is there any point in rigging in COMET into an application anymore? I am thinking of gwt comet - http://code.google.com/p/gwt-comet/. Q2. Should we release a new public application within the next 2 months that is dependent on HTML5 sockets and tell non-HTML5 browser users "sorry, your browser version cannot access this application"? Or should we architect the apps to use communication like GWT RPC? Q3. I am also very distrustful of long wait http request. I have never used it before but I have a horrible feeling about it. I have been using 10 to 20 second client-side polling. Is long wait http request risky (risk of hanging a browser session)? Does long wait request present any additional security risk?

  I've have not had any trouble deploying through eclipse until now. I'm guessing it might have to do with all the stuff I've added today a folder of .pdf and .tex files (in war/web-inf directory) a bit of JDO stuff and a servlet that reads the files in the directory and indexes them into the JDO Is there any way to find out what exactly is the problem?
