  • Inline template efficiency

    I like inline templates, and use them quite extensively. Whenever I write code with them I'm always careful to check the disassembly to see that the resulting output is efficient. Here's a potential cause of inefficiency. Suppose we want to use the mis-named Leading Zero Detect (LZD) instruction on T4 (this instruction does a count of the number of leading zero bits in an integer register - so it should really be called leading zero count). Everything could be held in registers, so why is this happening? The problem is that the code is only inlined at the code generation stage - when the actual instructions are generated. Earlier compiler phases see a function call. The called functions can do all kinds of nastiness to global variables (like 'a' in this code) so we need to load them from memory after the function call, and store them to memory before the function call. Fortunately we can use a #pragma directive to tell the compiler that the routine lzd() has no side effects - meaning that it does not read or write to memory. The directive to do that is #pragma no_side_effect(<routine name), and it needs to be placed after the declaration of the function.   • Play Framework Plugin for NetBeans IDE

    The start of minimal support for the Play Framework in NetBeans IDE 7.3 Beta would constitute (1) recognizing Play projects, (2) an action to run a Play project, and (3) classpath support. Well, most of that I've created already, as can be seen, e.g., below you can see logical views in the Projects window for Play projects (i.e., I can open all the samples that come with the Play distribution). Right-clicking a Play project lets you run it and, if the embedded browser is selected in the Options window, you can see the result in the IDE. Make a change to your code and refresh the browser, which immediately shows you your changes: What needs to be done, among other things: A wizard for creating new Play projects, i.e., it would use the Play command line to create the application and then open it in the IDE. Integration of everything available on the Play command line. Maybe the logical view, i.e., what is shown in the Projects window, should be changed. Right now, only the folders "app" and "test" are shown there, with everything else accessible in the Files window, as can be seen in the screenshot above. More work on the classpath, i.e., I've hardcoded a few things just to get things to work correctly. Options window extension to register the Play executable, instead of the current hardcoded solution. Scala integrations, i.e., investigate if/how the NetBeans Scala plugin is helpful and, if not, create different/additional solutions. E.g., the HTML templates are partly in Scala, i.e., need to embed Scala support into HTML. Hyperlinking in the "routes" file, as well as special support for the "application.conf" file.   • How to debug a native Java crash on Linux?

    I've seen this question and this article on how to debug a native Java crash. The article is with respect to Windows. What are the equivalent debugging aids on Linux? Note: All I have is this crash log from a user in the field. I do not have access to the machine on which the crash occurred. Update: I am pretty sure the crash is due to JNI code we have. I never meant to imply that it was the JVM itself that was faulty.     I'm running VMWare Workstation 7 on Windows 7 x64. In the guest OS (also Windows 7 x64) I have VMWare Tools installed, but the VMWare Tools service is disabled. I run the VM in full screen mode and the VMWare toolbar at the top often displays this tooltip: To release input, press Ctrl+Alt This tooltip obscures a part of the VM (often the menu of a program I'm using) and it's annoying as hell. Going out of full screen mode and into it again gets rid of it, but only until I mouse over that toolbar and then it reappears! How do I get rid of it, once and for all? I tried adding hints.hideAll = "TRUE" to the .vmx file for the VM and to preferences.ini and neither of those helped.

  • Stretch VMWare Player guest OS to fullscreen

    I’m using VMWare Player to play an old 16-bit Windows game. Unfortunately the game uses only 640x480 and I cannot figure out how to stretch the VM window to full-screen on the host. I set the guest OS to 640x480, but the screen is still small, in the middle of the screen as seen in figure 1. I even tried setting the compatibility mode to Windows 95 and 640x480, but it has no effect (figure 2) and looks exactly the same as when I set the VM to full-screen (1366x768 on the laptop) and start the game normally. There are few references to stretching a VM. One page mentions setting a Stretch Guest option, but there is no such option, at least not in VMWare Player 4.0.3.     We've recently had a catastrophic raid failure on our servers, which were being backed up with shadow protect. After 3 days of copying I finally got our file server back in a VM. As we used a 'virtualboot' for the file server in the meantime, I effectively had two copies of the server on the network at once. In order to copy back the files that changed, I tried to rename the file server, and change its IP address (I should also mention, the file server is a backup DC). When I renamed it, it came up with an error, so I rebooted. Now I can't login, it says "an attempt was made to logon, but the network logon service was not started" I don't care if I have to recreate the Vm and reinstall windows, but I would like to be able to get the files off this VM. How can I get access to it?

    Although i know there are large no. of post already floating over same issue , but am having no luck so far. I am getting below error message when trying to connect desktop by vmware view client 4: "the desktop currently has no desktop sources............. " My configuration is listed below: using view manager server over VM box. successully deployed 10 desktop VM over View manager and they are persistent mode. previoulsy few users were able to coonect to these desktops successfully under desktop sources i am getting "Domain name\user ID" and under status its showing "Ready" So when any other user who is authenticated trying to access desktop getting above mentioned error message. The other users are unique one who previously never logged in. Also i tried to rebooth the VM desktops assuming they might be locked by another user , but still am getting the same error message. Please help.

    I have a VM with RHEL 5 without an X server. My host has Windows 7. I need to connect to the VM and redirect the X11 output of the commands to my host. I know that if my host were a GNU/Linux machine it would be as easy as ssh -X . I'm ussing PuTTy to connect by SSH to the VM, I tried enabling X11 forward option in PuTTy config, but nothing happened. Have you ever done this? I'm quite advanced with GNU/Linux, but a newbie with this toy of Winbug$ 7.

    I'm looking to use NVelocity in my ASP.NET MVC application, not as a view engine, just for rendering some email templates. However, I cannot for the life of me get it to work. I have downloaded it from the castle project and followed the example at http://www.castleproject.org/others/nvelocity/usingit.html#step1 No matter what I try I don't seem to be able to load a template located in my site. The example suggests using the absolute path, which I have tried to no avail: Template t = engine.GetTemplate("/Templates/TestEmail.vm"); So please can someone give me two examples.   • Citrix XenServer iSCSI shared disk?

    I am running Citrix XenServer Essentials 5.5, with VMs stored on an EqualLogic iSCSI shelf, using XenServer's StorageLink. I would like to create a "virtual disk" that can be attached to multiple VMs. This would be used for a cluster file system like OCFS2 or GFS. This doesn't seem possible using the XenCenter GUI and I can't find anything online about how to do it. I realize I could simply expose the iSCSI network to the VM and have the VM initiate its own iSCSI, but that creates a lot of security challenges. This was pretty easy to do on Oracle VM Server, which is Xen based, so I know it's not a limitation of Xen itself. Maybe there is an "xe-" command for this? Thanks for any suggestions you can provide.

  • Guides for PostgreSQL query tuning?

    I've found a number of resources that talk about tuning the database server, but I haven't found much on the tuning of the individual queries. For instance, in Oracle, I might try adding hints to ignore indexes or to use sort-merge vs. correlated joins, but I can't find much on tuning Postgres other than using explicit joins and recommendations when bulk loading tables. Do any such guides exist so I can focus on tuning the most run and/or underperforming queries, hopefully without adversely affecting the currently well-performing queries? I'd even be happy to find something that compared how certain types of queries performed relative to other databases, so I had a better clue of what sort of things to avoid. update: I should've mentioned, I took all of the Oracle DBA classes along with their data modeling and SQL tuning classes back in the 8i days ... so I know about 'EXPLAIN', but that's more to tell you what's going wrong with the query, not necessarily how to make it better. (eg, are 'while var=1 or var=2' and 'while var in (1,2)' considered the same when generating an execution plan? What if I'm doing it with 10 permutations? When are multi-column indexes used? Are there ways to get the planner to optimize for fastest start vs. fastest finish? What sort of 'gotchas' might I run into when moving from mySQL, Oracle or some other RDBMS?) I could write any complex query dozens if not hundreds of ways, and I'm hoping to not have to try them all and find which one works best through trial and error. I've already found that 'SELECT count(*)' won't use an index, but 'SELECT count(primary_key)' will ... maybe a 'PostgreSQL for experienced SQL users' sort of document that explained sorts of queries to avoid, and how best to re-write them, or how to get the planner to handle them better. update 2: I found a Comparison of different SQL Implementations which covers PostgreSQL, DB2, MS-SQL, mySQL, Oracle and Informix, and explains if, how, and gotchas on things you might try to do, and his references section linked to Oracle / SQL Server / DB2 / Mckoi /MySQL Database Equivalents (which is what its title suggests) and to the wikibook SQL Dialects Reference which covers whatever people contribute (includes some DB2, SQLite, mySQL, PostgreSQL, Firebird, Vituoso, Oracle, MS-SQL, Ingres, and Linter).

  • NAS4Free disk encryption and ZFS error

    I have installed a NAS4Free on a VM, and as recommended, i installed it on a 1GB virtual disk, and assigned another disk 500GB to this VM for file storage. I have created the disk, encrypted it, created a ZFS virtual disk, and then a ZFS storage pool. Everything was working. On every restart of this VM i needed to go on and mount the encrypted drive. Recently i upgraded the host machine, and now i cant mount or make it work. I have tried removing everything and setting up from scratch everything, with the exception of formating the disk, i have used an encrypted one without formating it. Does anybody have any suggestion on how can i at least get back my data, can i mount somehow the encrypted drive even in another utility, just need to get back the data that were on it.

    The OOM killer on Linux wreaks havoc with various applications every so often, and it appears that not much is really done on the kernel development side to improve this. Would it not be better, as a best practice when setting up a new server, to reverse the default on the memory overcommitting, that is, turn it off (vm.overcommit_memory=2) unless you know you want it on for your particular use? And what would those use cases be where you know you want the overcommitting on? As a bonus, since the behavior in case of vm.overcommit_memory=2 depends on vm.overcommit_ratio and swap space, what would be a good rule of thumb for sizing the latter two so that this whole setup keeps working reasonably?

My question, is there a way I can re-convert this again to Basic? I don't want to delete and recreate the disk volumes because of the application installed on the disk 2 Any solution or tips I can use?
