  • Postgresql has broken apt-get on Ubuntu

    On ubuntu 12.04, whenever I try to install a package using apt-get I'm greeted by: The following packages have unmet dependencies: postgresql-9.1 : Depends: postgresql-client-9.1 but it is not going to be instal led E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a so lution). apt-get install postgresql-client-9.1 generates: The following packages have unmet dependencies: postgresql-client-9.1 : Breaks: postgresql-9.1 (< 9.1.6-0ubuntu12.04.1) but 9.1.3-2 is to be installed apt-get -f install and apt-get remove postgresql-9.1 both give: Removing postgresql-9.1 ... * Stopping PostgreSQL 9.1 database server * Error: /var/lib/postgresql/9.1/main is not accessible or does not exist ...fail! invoke-rc.d: initscript postgresql, action "stop" failed. dpkg: error processing postgresql-9.1 (--remove): subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: postgresql-9.1 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) So, apt-get is crippled, and I can't find a way out.   • Unix sort keys cause performance problems

    My data: It's a 71 MB file with 1.5 million rows. It has 6 fields All six fields combine to form a unique key - so that's what I need to sort on. Sort statement: sort -t ',' -k1,1 -k2,2 -k3,3 -k4,4 -k5,5 -k6,6 -o output.csv input.csv The problem: If I sort without keys, it takes 30 seconds. If I sort with keys, it takes 660 seconds. I need to sort with keys to keep this generic and useful for other files that have non-key fields as well. The 30 second timing is fine, but the 660 is a killer. More details using unix time: sort input.csv -o output.csv = 28 seconds sort -t ',' -k1 input.csv -o output.csv = 28 seconds sort -t ',' -k1,1 input.csv -o output.csv = 64 seconds sort -t ',' -k1,1 -k2,2 input.csv -o output.csv = 194 seconds sort -t ',' -k1,1 -k2,2 -k3,3 input.csv -o output.csv = 328 seconds sort -t ',' -k1,1 -k2,2 -k3,3 -k4,4 input.csv -o output.csv = 483 seconds sort -t ',' -k1,1 -k2,2 -k3,3 -k4,4 -k5,5 input.csv -o output.csv = 561 seconds sort -t ',' -k1,1 -k2,2 -k3,3 -k4,4 -k5,5 -k6,6 input.csv -o output.csv = 660 seconds I could theoretically move the temp directory to SSD, and/or split the file into 4 parts, sort them separately (in parallel) then merge the results, etc. But I'm hoping for something simpler since looks like sort is just picking a bad algorithm. Any suggestions? Testing Improvements using buffer-size: With 2 keys I got a 5% improvement with 8, 20, 24 MB and best performance of 8% improvement with 16MB, but 6% worse with 128MB With 6 keys I got a 5% improvement with 8, 20, 24 MB and best performance of 9% improvement with 16MB. Testing improvements using dictionary order (just 1 run each): sort -d --buffer-size=8M -t ',' -k1,1 -k2,2 input.csv -o output.csv = 235 seconds (21% worse) sort -d --buffer-size=8M -t ',' -k1,1 -k2,2 input.csv -o ouput.csv = 232 seconds (21% worse) conclusion: it makes sense that this would slow the process down, not useful Testing with different file system on SSD - I can't do this on this server now.     Does anyone know how to disable the unknown publisher security warning when running an application in Windows Xp Home? It's pretty annoying to have to click run everytime... I have tried: Run gpedit.msc, and go to Local Computer Policy-User Configuration-Administrative Templates-Windows Components-Attachment Manager and enable "Default risk level for file attachments", and then enable "Inclusion list for low risk file types" and add to this list the file extensions that you want to open without triggering this crap. But this file 'gpedit.msc' doest not exist on my computer, i checked system32 folder also =/ maybe its for xp pro

  • alias gcc='gcc -fpermissive' or modifying ./configure script

    I am compiling quite big project from source. The compilation always ends with: error: invalid conversion from ‘const char*’ to ‘char*’ [-fpermissive] I have already compiled this project one year ago. So I know a solution to this. Actualy I found more solutions: Adding a typecast to appropriate line of cpp code (It went to endless number of changes in each file. So I found next solution.) Modifying a makefile to compile that file with -fpermissive option. (I had to modify a lot of lines in each makefile. So I find even better solution.) "g++" or "gcc" was stored in a variable so I added -fpermissive to these variables. This is the best solution I have. It is sufficient to add this option to each makefile once. Unfortunately this software has big number of subdirectories. So I need to modify more than 100 makefiles. It took me whole day one year ago. Is there a way how to do this faster. What about this? alias gcc='gcc -fpermissive' I am not familiar with aliases. But it should be easy to try this. Is the syntax correct? And is this one correct? alias g++='g++ -fpermissive' ? And do I need to export the alias somehow? Will the make program respect the alias? Should I maybe change ./configure script? Or the ./configure.in? Or other file?

  • First Request to IIS Express Fails with 503 Service Unavailable, Second Succeeds

    Each time I start my ASP.Net MVC 3 app from Visual Studio 2010, IIS Express launches and IE spins waiting. The request fails with HTTP 503 Service Unavailable. I hit Refresh in IE, and the request succeeds. All subsequent requests succeed until I stop debugging. The next time I go to start debugging, the first request fails again. Has anyone else experienced this? In IISExpress\applicationhost.config I have: <site name="ProjectName" id="6"> <application path="/" applicationPool="Clr4IntegratedAppPool"> <virtualDirectory path="/" physicalPath="c:\users\chris\dropbox\code\2010\SolutionName\ProjectName" /> </application> <bindings> <binding protocol="http" bindingInformation="*:80:laptop" /> </bindings> </site> I have this in my hosts file: 127.0.0.1 laptop And my Project is set to start with IIS Express, with Project Url set to: http://laptop It's very strange that only the first request fails, perhaps as though Visual Studio isn't waiting long enough for IIS Express to start? Is there some way to make it wait? Stopping debugging, making a change, and then starting again is one of the most common tasks I do so adding another step to get there is pretty annoying.

  • Check for updates of a specific Debian package list

    The setup I run a Debian Squeeze host that I use to build a multilanguage project (python, java, php...) and generate custom packages (debian and RPM) automatically (through jenkins) The problem The target distributions of those Debian packages are Etch, Lenny and Squeeze. But our project has some native dependencies that are available only through the DebianRelease + 1 repository (i.e Lenny + 1 == Squeeze, Squeeze + 1 == Wheezy). We for example, need the jetty packages from Squeeze in Lenny, and the cyrus-imapd-2.4 packages from Wheezy in Squeeze. Some additional info : Some package we can simply 'backport by hand' by mirroring the DebianRelease + 1 packages to our own repositories. For instance, the jetty package from Squeeze will run fine on Lenny because it doesn't need an s**tload of additional dependencies However we do need to rebuild some packages. For instance, cyrus-imapd-2.4 from Wheezy has a lot of unsatisfied dependencies on Squeeze. So we need to rebuild it in Squeeze and then upload it to our repo. The question I need to have a simple way of knowing if they are any updates on those extra packages (both "normal" and "security" updates). I could write a simple script that runs weekly, get some parameters from a file, and generate an update report. Let's say the file looks like this: jetty:squeeze cyrus-imapd-2.4:wheezy The script should run as normal user not to mess up the system apt configuration and issue the appropriate commands to generate that report. Does Debian has some built-in apt-* commands/options dedicated to that kind of problem I could use to write this script ? If not, can someone think of another clean solution to achieve what I need ?

  • Help building maya render node spec

    Hi there, I'm looking to build 4x Maya render slaves/nodes for a friend of mine when his project gets green lit. The project involves MentalRay and lots of glass. I'm unsure if the new i7's 9xx or 8xx with hyper threading will do any better than a core 2 quad of the same (or close enough) speed. Does hyper threading make a difference to Maya or is it more performance per core based? I'm sure he's prefer I'd build another render node than pay for a bleeding edge CPU that only adds fractionly more GHz. -- The rest of the spec so far: 4Gb - 8Gb ram 64 bit OS: Probably Windows 7 (I know Linux is free, but want to build something my friend can support himself as easily as he supports his own workstation) 1TB HDD to hold textures, Maya files and renders which will be copied to central storage later Mobo with on-board video, gigabit NIC 500 - 650 watt PSU Desktop case something like a: Cooler Master ATCS 840 The machines will sold afterwards if necessary. -- If anyone has had experience in Maya and has done any tests with the new CPUs vs. the older ones I'd really appreciate your input.

  • Cannot open files in Visual Studio but in Delphi and Notepad

    About an hour ago Visual Studio 2008 decided that it cannot find files any more. This is on 64 bit Windows Vista. When I right-click on a text file (source code or otherwise) and select "open with" and "Visual Studio 2008", I get the following error (example): Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\ajbrehm\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\Hello Prism\Hello Prism\Main.pas'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. When I right-click the same file and select "open with" and "Delphi 2010" or "Notepad" (both other options available for text files on my system), the file opens correctly. Oddly enough when the file is part of a Visual Studio project and I open the project itself with Visual Studio (this works), I can open the file from within Visual Studio. Any ideas what might be going on? This started about an hour after I made a complete backup of my Vista VM and after I installed IIS 7, SQL Express, and Sourcegear Vault. The first files I noticed couldn't be opened in Visual Studio any more where Pascal source files in checked-outed folders from Vault. And Vault also seems to be unable to see one of the sources files and claims they don't exist. I found out about Visual Studio not opening ANY files any more when I tried to recreate the file Vault refused to see. Update: I just checked. Another user, "administrator", can still open text files with Visual Studio 2008. Both users have administrator rights. Update: I just restored the hours-old backup. Same problem. Apparently whatever triggered this happened before the install of IIS 7 and SQL Express. Never noticed it before.

  • How to deal with DELL support system?

    We have purchased a Dell Optiplex 9010 SSFV for our organization's work. Since the first installation two of the USB keyboard keys were not working properly. I had to press those keys two times simultaneously, on first time keys did not work and for for second time it printed two characters (as it were buffering first character.) Two keys that were not working properly: Hexangrave (Below the ESC key: `) Double Quotes (Left the enter key ") We registered our complaint with DELL and they suggested (with some hard to understand and weird ENGLISH accent) some test and tricks, such as switching to different ports, checking keyboard on different PC, and it worked well with diff. PC(with Windows 7 Home Premium installed). It was clear that it is an OS fault, hence they suggested to re-install OS. Problem began here, we have a project on the run and currently a video editing project setup on our system, so can't re-install system in hurry and also DELL persons were not providing any other solution such as updating keyboard driver, etc. Arguments I am a Software Engg. and don't think it is a feasible solution to re-install entire system for simple problems. This prob is coming since the fresh system installation, so I don't think it will solve the problem. Finally, I had to find solution myself and got it here, now I want to show my disappointment to dell persons or at least tell them that they should improve there support system to not advice to re-install entire system for that simple problems. Notes We have purchased 5 years NEXT business day support from DELL for around 8000 INR (Not for that kind of solutions from DELL). It is Dell India Support System. So can anyone tell me how to tackle dell support system officially, so that they will pay more attention in near future. Thanks

However, whenever I mount a Truecrypt Volume and double-click that, it looks like this: Is there any way to default to the first view option for all types of folders? I tried view options in Finder, but it didn't seem to work.
