• How should I launch a Portable Python Tkinter application on Windows without ugliness?

  I've written a simple GUI program in python using Tkinter. Let's call this program 'gui.py'. My users run 'gui.py' on Windows machines from a USB key using Portable Python; installing anything on the host machine is undesirable. I'd like my users to run 'gui.py' by double-clicking an icon at the root of the USB key. My users don't care what python is, and they don't want to use a command prompt if they don't have to. I don't want them to have to care what drive letter the USB key is assigned. I'd like this to work on XP, Vista, and 7. My first ugly solution was to create a shortcut in the root directory of the USB key, and set the "Target" property of the shortcut to something like "(root)\App\pythonw.exe (root)\App\gui.py", but I couldn't figure out how to do a relative path in a windows shortcut, and using an absolute path like "E:" seems fragile. My next solution was to create a .bat script in the root directory of the USB key, something like this: @echo off set basepath=%~dp0 "%basepath%App\pythonw.exe" "%basepath%\App\gui.py" This doesn't seem to care what drive letter the USB key is assigned, but it does leave a DOS window open while my program runs. Functional, but ugly. Next I tried a .bat script like this: @echo off set basepath=%~dp0 start "" "%basepath%App\pythonw.exe" "%basepath%\App\gui.py" (See here for an explanation of the funny quoting) Now, the DOS window briefly flashes on screen before my GUI opens. Less ugly! Still ugly. How do real men deal with this problem? What's the least ugly way to start a python Tkinter GUI on a Windows machine from a USB stick?

• Change permission of files with the owner 'apache'

  Hay, i have some files on my server with the owner set to "apache", I'm not quite sure how this happened. Anyway, i need to change the permission of these files to 0777 so i can download/edit them. However i cannot. I'm using a 1and1 Linux server and use Plesk to administrate it. I have the ability to login via SSH. However, if i run chmod or chown i get a "permission denied" error, and if i try to sudo chmod or chown it says the command cannot be found. When i go to edit my domain details, i get this option Shell access to server with FTP user's credentials and have these options /bin/sh /bin/bash /sbin/nologin /bin/bash (chrooted) /bin/rbash Any idea's how i should go about changing the permissions or changing the owner? • replace a random word of a string with a random replacement

  I am developing a script that takes an article, searches the article for a "keyword" and then randomly replaces that keyword with an anchor link. I have the script working as it should, however I need to be able to have an array of "replacements" for the function to loop through and insert at the random location. So the first random position would get anchor link #1. The second random position would get anchor link #2. The third random position would get anchor link #3. etc... • A dynamic array of a class, inside another separate class?

  I'm working on a robot localization simulator and I created a class called "landmark". The end result is going to be a robot that is always centered and always faces the top of the screen. As it turns, the birds eye view map will rotate around the robot. To accomplish this, I'm assuming I can rotate one class and have all elements inside rotate as well. So, the landmark class has properties x,y, label, and radius. This is suppose to simulate a tree location in a forest. To test everything, I need "forest data," and I wrote a script to generate 100 trees in a 100m x 100m area. The script automatically generates values within an acceptable range for x,y, radius. The generated data is stored in an object called tempForest and is 100x3. Ideally, I want to create a class called "landmarks" (plural) that has 100 landmark instances inside. How would I instantiate 100 instances of landmark in one instance of landmarks using that randomly generated data? Ideally, I'd just type treeBeacons = landmarks(); and it would randomly populate 100 (user definable, set in config file) instances with x, y, radius data. I'm not sure how to deal with a dynamic array of class "Landmark", inside another single class "landmarks." Any ideas?

• "Fuzzy" Display Problems on New OpenSUSE 11.3 Install

  Hi, I have a old Desktop that has a new installation of OpenSUSE 11.3 on it. To get straight to the point, whenever I try to start-up OpenSUSE, my display goes "fuzzy" (almost like a badly tuned TV) and sometimes (not always) my monitor goes black and says "Out of Range: 15.6kHz/49Hz": I assumed that this was a driver problem, so I download the drivers from nvidia and ran the shell script, completed and rebooted. Then OpenSUSE failed to boot with something like "nscd failed to start". At that point I decided to re-install and I did, but this time I tried un-checking "Automatic Configuration" to see if that helped. Got through the install and still have a problem. Unfortunately, my Linux troubleshooting skills are non-existent, so has anyone got any ideas on what could be the problem (is it the display driver?) and how I can fix the problem?

• Letter spacing issue with 'overlapping' character

  I'm having some trouble with a font I found on Google Web Fonts. As you can see in the image posted below, the capital V in 'Versus' overlaps with the 'e' when i'm using Firefox. Though when i'm using Chrome (or IE) it does not overlap and leaves me with an ugly space between the two characters. Is there any way to fix this and make it look like the one in Firefox? Or should I start looking for another font? • Special characters stripped by mySQL/PHP JSON

  Hi, I have a simple PHP script to extract data from a mySQL database and encode it as JSON. The problem is that special characters (for example German ä or ß characters) are stripped from the JSON response. Everything after the first special character for any single field is just stripped. The fields are set to utf8_bin, and in phpMyAdmin the characters display correctly. • Major permission repair needed on Mac Os

  I made the fatal error of copying and pasting a sudo command into my terminal without double checking it, here it is. sudo -R mysql / What this does (for those that don't know) is recursively change the owner every file from the root down to mysql!! obviously not what i was intending This has of course played havoc with my system, the first thing i did was the apple permission repair but that only works for files that it has an idea of though it has changed a lot of file ownerships back to root. It seems that many library files are still owned incorrectly, as a lot of problems don't work. What i propose doing as a temporary fix until i can reinstall mountain lion is to recursively set all ownerships that are mysql to Luke. I'm not sure what they should precisely but this is still better than nothing. Is this possible using a shell script? I realise that this won't fix the problem properly and i will have to reformat but i need the machine in a workable state just for this week.

  Hi, There's a class 'Car' with brand and model as properties. I have a list of items of this class List<Car> myCars. I need to represent in a JSP website 2 ComboBox, one for brand and another for model, that when you select the brand, in the model list only appear the ones from that brand. • tmux: unbind C-[ as a prefix

  I have a fairly straight forward .tmux.conf file which does nothing more but to define a couple of options, such as history-limit. I have not added any custom key bindings yet. I find it extremely annoying that I cannot unbind C-[ as a prefix in tmux. I thought it might be a terminal or shell issue, but confirmed same behaviour on a configless machine using Bash and [Gnome] Terminal. So the question really is, how do I unbind the C-[ key from tmux? ** I have base-index 1 set.

• Deleting dynamic pageviews using Javascript

  Hi, I created dynamic tab creation application using telerik radstrip. I can delete the tabs that are creating dynamically using crossbar option. When i am deleting the tabs its just deleting the tabs but not pageview corresponding to the tab. I have tried to delete the pageviews but i am getting error like "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method" and pointing to multiPage.get_pageViews().remove(pageView); code. Can anyone help me how to delete pageviews. Thanks in advance. • Missing Right Click Menu Text After Sleep

  I have a laptop running Windows 7 and regularly close the lid to put it in sleep mode. Recently after resuming from sleep if I go to access the right click menu in the windows shell when I hover over the menu items the text disappears and doesn't re-appear without closing the menu and right clicking again. The only way to fix this is to restart. Any ideas what could be causing this? I have an nvidia 8600m gs graphics card which had a BSOD problem a while back at boot up but since I underclocked it slightly it has been running fine and I experience no other issues but this. This only affects right click menus that are part of the windows so not any programs right click menu. It's not a major problem just strange and a little annoying.

On click, the button submits data to a php file and then changes text and blurs according to the response from php file. The blur function and change text function in col5 is working well. But the change text function in button got really buggy. The button text should change accordingly. the text of button "Activate" should change to "Inactivate" and the text of button "Inactivate" should change to "Activate" on click / successful submission.. This is not working.. However, in Chrome the first alert returns 0 and the second returns the empty string. My intent is to grab a web page into a string for processing. • Django freezes when adding objects through the admin

  I have a Django 1.1 website running via Apache/mod_wsgi with a PostgreSQL 8.3.1 database. Recently, when I added objects through the admin interface, the connection froze up and I lost several worker processes, so I had to restart Apache. Upon trying to replicate this, I found that it only happens through the admin: if I go into the Django shell and issue the same insert, it works fine. Also, performing an UPDATE operation works without issues, so just INSERTs. I've rebuilt indexes on PostgreSQL and run a full VACUUM. Error logs don't show anything, and I can't figure out for the life of me what's wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

• How can I get ssh-agent working over ssh and in tmux (on OS X)?

  I have a private key set up for my github account, the passphrase to which is, I believe, stored in OS X's keychain. I certainly don't have to type it in when I open a terminal window and enter ssh [email protected]. However, when I'm running bash over an ssh session, or locally inside a tmux session, I have to type in the passphrase every single time I attempt to ssh to github. This question suggests that a similar problem exists with screen, but I don't really understand the issue well enough to fix it in tmux. • SEO google keyword position tools?

  Hi guys, I want to check our google postions for several keywords every day and make a note in a spreadseet. At the moment, we have a student doing it but it's a rubbish job and it doesn't seem fair on them! Are there any tools available to automate this process? I have tried rankchecker by seobook.com, but although that should be exactly what im looking for when i set scheduled tasks in that, it doesnt work. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks! peter EDIT: Liam has suggested a Python script to do this, which unfortunately isnt something I'm very familiar with! If anyone knows of a good tutorial or something to help us with this, that would be brilliant. Update: Found a php script at seoscript.net which looks like a step in the right direction. • PHP & MySQL Image deletion problem?

  I have this script that deletes a users avatar image that is stored in a folder name thumbs and another named images and the image name is stored in a mysql database. But for some reason the script deletes all the users info for example if the users id is 3 all of the users info like first name last name age and so are deleted as well, basically everything is deleted including the user how do I fix this so only the images and image name is deleted? • Javascript array of dates - not iterating properly (jquery ui datepicker)

  Hi I have some code which builds an array of date ranges. I then call a function, passing it a date, and compare that date with dates in the array. I'm doing it this way because the dates are stored in a cms, and I'm manipulating the JqueryUI datepicker. Unfortunately my code only checks the first date range in the array - and I can't figure out why! I think it's probably something simple (/stupid!) - if anyone can shed some light on it I'd be extremely grateful! • Given a main function and a cleanup function, how (canonically) do I return an exit status in Bash/Linux?

  Context: I have a bash script (a wrapper for other scripts, really), that does the following pseudocode: do a main function if the main function returns: $returncode = $? #most recent return code if the main function runs longer than a timeout: kill the main function $returncode = 140 #the semi-canonical "exceeded allowed wall clock time" status run a cleanup function if the cleanup function returns an error: #nonzero return code exit $? #exit the program with the status returned from the cleanup function else #cleanup was successful .... Question: What should happen after the last line? If the cleanup function was successful, but the main function was not, should my program return 0 (for the successful cleanup), or $returncode, which contains the (possibly nonzero and unsuccessful) return code of the main function? For a specific application, the answer would be easy: "it depends on what you need the script for." However, this is more of a general/canonical question (and if this is the wrong place for it, kill it with fire): in Bash (or Linux in general) programming, do you typically want to return the status that "means" something (i.e. $returncode) or do you ignore such subjectivities and simply return the code of the most recent function? This isn't Bash-specific: if I have a standalone executable of any kind, how, canonically should it behave in these cases? Obviously, this is somewhat debatable. Even if there is a system for these things, I'm sure that a lot of people ignore it. All the same, I'd like to know. Cheers!
