  Hello. I am having a real headache trying to set a node's local position to match a given world position. I was given a solution but, AFAICS, it only takes into account orientation and position but NOT scaling : node_new_local_position = node_parent.derivedOrientation().Inverse() * ( world_position_to_match - node_parent.derivedPosition() ); The node in question is a child of node_parent; node_parent local and derived properties (orientation, position and scaling) are known, as well as its full matrix transform. All the positions are 3d vectors; the orientation is a quaternion; the full transform is a 4x4 matrix. Could someone please help me to modify the solution to support scaling in the node hierarchy?   We would like to reserve a set of primary key identifiers for all tables (e.g. 1-1000) so that we can bootstrap the system with pre-loaded system data. All our JPA entity classes have the following definition for the primary key. @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = IDENTITY) @Column(name = "id", unique = true, nullable = false, insertable = false, updatable = false) private Integer id; is there a way to tell the database that increments should start happening from 1000 (i.e. customer specific data will start from 1000 onwards). We support (h2, mysql, postgres) in our environment and I would prefer a solution which can be driven via JPA and reverse engineering DDL tools from Hibernate. Let me know if this is the correct approach

• what does "Net user administrator /active:yes" do to a computer?

  i just purchased a new laptop and had some issues with it... I called tech support and they had me run this command in cmd prompt by right clicking the cmd icon and selecting "run as administrator" with root C:\windows\system32: "Net user administrator /active:no" after it was determined that it didn't fix the issue we ran this code "Net user administrator /active:yes" i then rebooted..and was asked for my windows login for my user account "Rees" as usual.. however ALL my settings where gone (including my desktop files) as though it was the first time I booted up. WHAT in the world happened with this command?? I desperately NEED my user accounts and files back to how they were!! (running windows 7) Please help!

  I'm looking for options that allow very high-level web site development with these special characteristics: not requiring the user to program in a complex programming language not requiring the user to use GUI-like administration areas allow the user to "program" in a lightweight markup language The last point is not only about look and structure of the output but also about creating simple dynamic output. For example: listing pages fetching the content of other pages doing a site search and displaying its output dynamically show or hide parts of the page depending on login status Of course, I am not expecting a solution that provides the same possibilities like a Ruby, Python or PHP web framework. Rather I am looking for support of the "basics" that are common for web sites. • Hierarchical data in Linq - options and performance

  I have some hierarchical data - each entry has an id and a (nullable) parent entry id. I want to retrieve all entries in the tree under a given entry. This is in a SQL Server 2005 database. I am querying it with LINQ to SQL in C# 3.5. LINQ to SQL does not support Common Table Expressions directly. My choices are to assemble the data in code with several LINQ queries, or to make a view on the database that surfaces a CTE. Which option (or another option) do you think will perform better when data volumes get large? Is SQL Server 2008's HierarchyId type supported in Linq to SQL?

• Chaining CSS classes in IE6 - Trying to find a jQuery solution?

  Right, perhaps I ask the impossible? I consider myself fairly new to Javscript and jQuery, but that being said, I have written some fairly complex code recently so I am definitely getting there... however I am now possed with a rather interesting issue at my current freelance contract. The previous web coder has taken a Grid-960 approach to the HTML and as a result has used chained classes to style many of the elements. The example below is typical of what can be found in the code: <div class='blocks four-col-1 orange highlight'>Some content</div> And in the css there will be different declarations for: (not actual css... but close enough) .blocks {margin-right:10px;} .orange {background-image:url(someimage.jpg);} .highlight {font-weight:bold;} .four-col-1 {width:300px;} and to make matters worse... this is in the CSS: .blocks.orange.highlight {background-colour:#dd00ff;} Anyone not familiar with this particular bug can read more on it here: http://www.ryanbrill.com/archives/multiple-classes-in-ie/ it is very real and very annoying. Without wanting to go into the merrits of not chaining classes (I told them this, but it is no longer feasible to change their approach... 100 hand coded pages into a 150 page website, no CMS... sigh) and without the luxury of being able to change the way these blocks are styled... can anyone advise me on the complexity and benefits between any of my below proposed approaches or possible other options that would adequately solve this problem. Potential Solution 1 Using conditional comments I am considering loading a jquery script only for IE6 that: Reads the class of all divs in a certain section of the page and pushes to an array creates empty boxes off screen with only one of the classes applied at a time Reads the applied CSS values for each box Re-applies these styles to the individual box, somehow bearing in mind the order in which they are called and overwriting conflicting instructions as required Potential Solution 2 read the class of all divs in a certain section of the page and push to an array Scan the document for links to style sheets Ajax grab the stylesheets and traverse looking for matching names to those in class array Apply styles as needed Potential Solution 3 Create an IE6 only stylesheet containing the exact style to be applied as a unique name (ie: class='blocks orange highlight' becomes class='blocks-orange-highlight') Traverse the document in IE6 and convert all spaces in class declarations to hyphens and reapply classes based on new style name Summary: Solution 1 allows the people at this company to apply any styles in the future and the script will adjust as needed. However it does not allow for the chained style to be added, only the individual style... it is also processor intensive and time consuming, but also the most likely to be converted into a plugin that could be used the world over Solution 2 is a potential nightmare to code. But again will allow for an endless number of updates without breaking Solution 3 will require someone at the companty to hardcode the new styles every time they make a change, and if they don't, IE6 will break. Ironically the site, whilst needing to conform to IE6 in a limited manner, does not need to run wihtout javascript (they've made the call... have JS or go away), so consider all jQuery and JS solutions to be 'game on'. Did I mention how much i hate IE6? Anyway... any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. I will continue to develop my own solution and if I discover one that can be turned into a jQuery plugin I will post it here in the comments. Regards, Mike.

• Incomplete results with Turkish characters in Indexing Service

  Finally I get to post my i's and I's as promised... I've found that MS Indexing Service returns incomplete results when searching for documents with Turkish content. It seems to choke especially regarding the (incorrectly-named) 4I problem. Apparently, MS has fixed this problem with a Windows 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325333 service pack, but the bug seems to be resurrected with Windows XP & 2003. Anybody uses Indexing Service in their line of work? Similar problems with other non-English locales? Any solutions?

• Relying on nhibernate's second level cache vs pushing objects into the session

  I have some big entities which are frequently accessed in the same session. For example, in my application there is a reporting page which consist of dynamically generated chart images. For each chart image on this page, the client makes requests to corresponding controller and the controller generates images using some entities. I can either use asp.net's session dictionary for "caching" those entities or rely on nhibernate's second level cache support with using cached queries for example. What is your opinion? By the way I will use shared hosting, is nhibernate's second level cache hosting friendly? Thanks.

  I feel like this question has been repeated here, but I couldn't find it. What open-source programmer's editor or IDE is best for writing code in C? A GUI and integration with Clang for static code analysis or git for version control would be convenient, but aren't necessary. I would ideally use two editors: one feature-filled IDE and one with a small memory footprint, but editors like jEdit, Geany, Diakonos, nano, etc. don't satisfy many of my needs, which include: Good support for refactoring and code completion. Extensibility in C or a "modern" scripting language (i.e. Ruby or Python) Relatively good performance and lack of bloated-ness

• Can HTTP URIs have non-ASCII characters?

  I tried to find this in the relevant RFC, IETF RFC 3986, but couldn't figure it. Do URIs for HTTP allow Unicode, or non-ASCII of any kind? Can you please cite the section and the RFC that supports your answer. NB: For those who might think this is not programming related - it is. It's related to an ISAPI filter I'm building. Addendum I've read section 2.5 of RFC 3986. But RFC 2616, which I believe is the current HTTP protocol, predates 3986, and for that reason I'd suppose it cannot be compliant with 3986. Furthermore, even if or when the HTTP RFC is updated, there still will be the issue of rationalization - in other words, does an HTTP URI support ALL of the RFC3986 provisos, including whatever is appropriate to include non US-ASCII characters?

  I know this question has been asked countless times, but answers are mixed, so I thought I'd test the waters and see what the latest verdict is out in the development community. I need a [preferably jQuery] rich text editor plugin that simply attaches itself to <textarea> elements and supports image uploads. It doesn't need to be too advanced. Just alignment, bold, italic, styles and image support. I tried CKEditor (along with CKFinder for image uploads), but it just has too many features and is too heavy for what I need. This is going to be used for simple webpage editing.

• Acer aspire 5735z wireless not working after upgrade to 11.10

  I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset. • iphone/ipad orientation handling

  This is more of a general question for people to provide me guidance on, basically Im learning iPad/iPhone development and have finally come across the multi-orientation support question. I have looked up a fair amount of doco, and my book "Beginning iPhone 3 Development" has a nice chapter on it. But my question is this, if I was to programatically change my controls (or even use different views for each orientation) how on earth to people maintain their code base? I can just imagine so many issues with spaghetti code/thousands of "if" checks all over the place, that it would drive me nuts to make one small change to the UI arrangement.   I am trying to understand how Facebook's chat feature receives messages without continuously poling the server. Firebug shows me a single GET XmlHttpRequest continuously sitting there, waiting for a response from the server. After 5 minutes, this never timed out. How are they preventing timeout? An AJAX request can just sit there like that indefinitely, waiting for a response? Can I do this with JSONRequest? I see this at json.org: JSONRequest is designed to support duplex connections. This permits applications in which the server can asynchronously initiate transmissions. This is done by using two simultaneous requests: one to send and the other to receive. By using the timeout parameter, a POST request can be left pending until the server determines that it has timely data to send. Or is there another way to let an AJAX call just sit there, waiting, besides using JSONRequest?

  We're using jQuery to get a JSON-string from our server (UTF-8 response, also UTF-8 request through jQuery) and put this JSON into a Google Gears WorkerPool. This workerpool processes the JSON and stores it into a Gears database (SQLite). It turns out that, apparently, SQLite stores data using iso-8859-1 rather than UTF-8. Since we're trying to store user names that might contain Cyrillic characters (and others that you might encounter in Europe), this goes horribly wrong. Can anyone tell me how to change the character encoding in either the Gears WorkerPool or the SQLite database that Gears employs? Of course, if I'm looking in the wrong direction with my problem, feel free to offer alternatives! Unfortunately, HTML5 isn't an option as we're supposed to support IE7 primarily.
