• Upgrading to Code Based Migrations EF 4.3.1 with Connector/Net 6.6

  Entity Framework 4.3.1 includes a new feature called code first migrations.  We are adding support for this feature in our upcoming 6.6 release of Connector/Net.  In this walk-through we'll see the workflow of code-based migrations when you have an existing application and you would like to upgrade to this EF 4.3.1 version and use this approach, so you can keep track of the changes that you do to your database.   The first thing we need to do is add the new Entity Framework 4.3.1 package to our application. This should via the NuGet package manager.  You can read more about why EF is not part of the .NET framework here. Adding EF 4.3.1 to our existing application  Inside VS 2010 go to Tools -> Library Package Manager -> Package Manager Console, this will open the Power Shell Host Window where we can work with all the EF commands. In order to install this library to your existing application you should type Install-Package EntityFramework This will make some changes to your application. So Let's check them. In your .config file you'll see a  <configSections> which contains the version you have from EntityFramework and also was added the <entityFramework> section as shown below. This section is by default configured to use SQL Express which won't be necesary for this case. So you can comment it out or leave it empty. Also please make sure you're using the Connector/Net 6.6.x version which is the one that has this support as is shown in the previous image. At this point we face one issue; in order to be able to work with Migrations we need the __MigrationHistory table that we don't have yet since our Database was created with an older version. This table is used to keep track of the changes in our model. So we need to get it in our existing Database. Getting a Migration-History table into an existing database First thing we need to do to enable migrations in our existing application is to create our configuration class which will set up the MySqlClient Provider as our SQL Generator. So we have to add it with the following code: using System.Data.Entity.Migrations;     //add this at the top of your cs file public class Configuration : DbMigrationsConfiguration<NameOfYourDbContext>  //Make sure to use the name of your existing DBContext { public Configuration() { this.AutomaticMigrationsEnabled = false; //Set Automatic migrations to false since we'll be applying the migrations manually for this case. SetSqlGenerator("MySql.Data.MySqlClient", new MySql.Data.Entity.MySqlMigrationSqlGenerator());     }   }  This code will set up our configuration that we'll be using when executing all the migrations for our application. Once we have done this we can Build our application so we can check that everything is fine. Creating our Initial Migration Now let's add our Initial Migration. In Package Manager Console, execute "add-migration InitialCreate", you can use any other name but I like to set this as our initial create for future reference. After we run this command, some changes were done in our application: A new Migrations Folder was created. A new class migration call InitialCreate which in most of the cases should have empty Up and Down methods as long as your database is up to date with your Model. Since all your entities already exists, delete all duplicated code to create any entity which exists already in your Database if there is any. I found this easier when you don't have any pending updates to do to your database. Now we have our empty migration that will make no changes in our database and represents how are all the things at the begining of our migrations.  Finally, let's create our MigrationsHistory table. Optionally you can add SQL code to delete the edmdata table which is not needed anymore. public override void Up() { // Just make sure that you used 4.1 or later version         Sql("DROP TABLE EdmMetadata"); } From our Package Manager Console let's type: Update-database; If you like to see the operations made on each Update-database command you can use the flag -verbose after the Update-database. This will make two important changes.  It will execute the Up method in the initial migration which has no changes in the database. And second, and very important,  it will create the __MigrationHistory table necessary to keep track of your changes. And next time you make a change to your database it will compare the current model to the one stored in the Model Column of this table. Conclusion The important thing of this walk through is that we must create our initial migration before we start doing any changes to our model. This way we'll be adding the necessary __MigrationsHistory table to our existing database, so we can keep our database up to date with all the changes we do in our context model using migrations. • OpenStack: How to make Cloudify use the floating IP instead of the fixed one?

  I have a problem with Cloudify (both 2.5 and 2.6-rc release). I have an All-In-One Openstack 2013.1.1 setup and I'm trying to use Cloudify to bootstrap a cirros 0.3.1 vm. My quantum configuration is: pool of fixed ip (10.0.0.0/24) for vm management; pool of floating ip (192.168.1.170-190) taken from 192.168.1.1/24 (my lan) When I deploy a vm first, an ip from 10.0.0.0/24 is given (I cannot reach it from my PCs because it is only for vm management) and then I associate a floating ip with which I can ping (and ssh) the deployed machine. The problem is when I do: bootstrap-cloud openstack because Cloudify stay forever into "attempting to access management vm 10.0.0.3" and this is due to the fact that 10.0.0.3 is not reachable. What can I do to get Cloudify take the floating ip instead of the fixed one?

  Some of our customers inform us that in some cases following error appears: System.Management.ManagementException: Blad dostawcy. at System.Management.ManagementException.ThrowWithExtendedInfo(ManagementStatus errorCode) at System.Management.ManagementObjectCollection.ManagementObjectEnumerator.MoveNext() The error is generated while trying to loop through a colection returned by Get() method of the System.Mamangment.ManagementObjectSearcher object. This is the code of my method: private bool PrinterExists(string printerName) { bool retVal = false; SelectQuery q = new SelectQuery("select caption from win32_printer"); using (ManagementObjectSearcher searcher = new ManagementObjectSearcher(q)) { foreach (ManagementObject printer in searcher.Get()) { if(printer["Caption"].ToString() == printerName) { retVal = true; break; } } } return retVal; } It seems that the problem appears only on Windows XP. The only workaround I know is reconstruction of WMI database. It sometimes helps, but unfortunatelly not always. Can anyone tell me what is the reason of this error and how can I fix it?

  I'm thinking of continuing my education and going for masters degree. I must decide between two programs. One is CS/IT and focuses on algorithms, math, multimedia, web technologies with optional interesting courses like AI and robotics. Second is about business process management, software architecture and project management. I have some experience in business software and I must say, I never though I need deeper understating of algorithms or program language but I always felt that I'm lacking in project planing or management knowledge. On the other side, CS/IT looks more interesting but what are the chances to find a job that require such skills?

• gnome-power-manager is running while trying to log in. How to get rid of it?

  After booting into the ubuntu login screen and clicking on my user name and entering the password, I get a dialog stating that gnome-power-manager is still running. The dialog presents 2 buttons, 1 to Cancel and other to Logout Anyway. This issue happens about 50% of the time and I don't remember doing anything related to power management recently. Also, even if I don't choose any option in the dialog it goes away after about 30s. This is happening on a desktop machine as well as a laptop. On the laptop I have configured power management for myself (not for gdm) whereas in desktop I have not configured power management for any user. This is only an annoyance but still I would like to fix it, especially on my desktop where I am interested in getting it auto-login ASAP into my userid. Any ideas why this could be happenning?

  Hello, I finished installation of PHPUnit, it works but I don't get a code coverage report. I'm working on windows. My phpunit.xml <phpunit bootstrap="./application/bootstrap.php" colors="false"> <testsuite name="Application"> <directory>./</directory> </testsuite> <filter> <whitelist> <directory suffix=".php">./application</directory> <directory suffix=".php">./library/Application</directory> <exclude> <directory suffix=".php">../application/libraries/Zend</directory> <directory suffix=".php">../application/controllers</directory> <directory suffix=".phtml">./application/</directory> <file>./application/Bootstrap.php</file> </exclude> </whitelist> </filter> <logging> <log type="coverage-html" target="./log/report" charset="UTF-8" yui="true" highlight="true" lowUpperBound="50" highLowerBound="80" /> <log type="testdox" target="./log/testdox.html" /> </logging> If I run on cmd phpunit --configuration phpunit.xml it works so far, but PHPUnit doesn't create a code coverage report. If I run phpunit --configuration phpunit.xml --coverage-html \log or phpunit --configuration phpunit.xml --coverage-html log I get the error The Xdebug extension is not loaded. But I installed it (version 2.0.5)! phpinfo() says I installed it, also var_dump(extension_loaded('xdebug')) I get true. I installed it as Zend Extension and I tried also as normal extension. Bot worked, but PHPUnit says everytime Xdebug is not loaded!

• MVC App Works in Visual Studio, but not IIS7

  Working on a an ASP.NET MVC Project, and I'm having some difficulties deploying to a shared dev server. Locally, when debugging using the local Visual Studio 2008 server, everything works peachy.   I am asking this in very general sense. Both from cloud provider and cloud consumer's perspective. Also the question is not for any specific kind of application (in fact the intention is to know which type of applications/domains can fit into which of the cloud slab -SaaS PaaS IaaS). My understanding so far is: IaaS: Raw Hardware (Processors, Networks, Storage). PaaS: OS, System Softwares, Development Framework, Virtual Machines. SaaS: Software Applications. It would be great if Stackoverflower's can share their understanding and experiences of cloud computing concept. EDIT: Ok, I will put it in more specific way - Amazon EC2: You don't have control over hardware layer. But you can take your choice of OS image, Dev Framework (.NET, J2EE, LAMP) and Application and put it on EC2 hardware. Can you deploy an applications built with Google App Engine or Azure on EC2? Google App Engine: You don't have control over hardware and OS and you get a specific Dev Framework to build your application. Can you take any existing Java or Python application and port it to GAE? Or vice versa, can applications that were built on GAE be taken out of GAE and ported to any Application Server like Websphere or Weblogic? Azure: You don't have control over hardware and OS and you get a specific Dev Framework to build your application. Can you take any existing .NET application and port it to Azure? • Project setup for an ADO.NET/WCF DataService

  I'd like to implement a ADO.NET/WCF DataService and I am wondering what's the best way to setup a project in VS2008 SP1 for this purpose. Currently I have an ASP.NET web application project (not of "WebSite" project type). The data access layer is an Entity model (EF version 1) with SQL Server database. I have the Entity Model in a separate DLL project and the web application project references to this assembly for all data accesses. The ADO.NET/WCF DataService needs to communicate with the Entity model/database as well. It has to be hosted on the same web server (IIS 7.5) together with the web application. Since the DataService is not directly related to that specific web application (though it will provide and modify data from/in the same database the web application uses as well) my basic idea was to separate the DataService in its own new project (which also references the Entity Model DLL). Now I have seen that there is no project type "ADO.NET/WCF DataService" in VS2008 SP1. It seems only possible to add a DataService as an element to other existing projects, for instance Web Application projects. Why isn't there a separate DataService project type? Does this mean now that I have to add the DataService as an element to my Web Application project? Or shall I create a new Web Application project and add a DataService to it? (I could delete the pregenerated default.aspx since I do not need any web pages in this project.) What's the best way? Thank you for suggestions in advance!

• Problem using UnhandledException in Windows Mobile app

  I have a Windows Mobile program that accesses an attached device through a third-party DLL. Each call to the device can take an unknown length of time, so each call includes a timeout property. If the call takes longer than the specified timeout to return, the DLL instead throws an exception which my app catches with no problem. The problem that I have is with closing the application. If my application has made a call to the DLL and is waiting for the timeout to occur, and I then close the application before the timeout occurs, my application locks up and requires the PDA to be rebooted. I can ensure that the application waits for the timeout before closing, under normal conditions. However, I am trying to use AppDomain.CurrentDomain.UnhandledException to catch any unhandled exceptions in the program and use the event to wait for this pending timeout to occur so the program can be closed finally. My problem is that this event doesn't seem to stick around long enough. If I put a MessageBox.Show("unhandled exception"); line in the event, and then throw a new unhandled exception from my application's main form, I see the message box for a split second but then it disappears without my having clicked the OK button. The documentation I've found on this event suggests that by the time it's called the application is fully committed to closing and the closing can't be stopped, but I didn't think it meant that the event method itself won't finish. What gives (I guess that's the question)? Update: In full windows (Vista) this works as expected, but only if I use the Application.ThreadException event, which doesn't exist in .Net CF 2.0.

• Facebook IOS SDK: Error in Publish Story Dialog

  I've successfully set up the "DemoApp" project from the Facebook IOS SDK to use my "OKC ThunderCast" Facebook application. I have also configured another "Tester" application from scratch to successfully use the Facebook SDK and publish stories to my news feed. However, in my production application, I always get this result when calling the "dialog" method. The full description of the error message is "Error on line 52 at column 17: Opening and ending tag mismatch: div line 0 and body" Here's a detailed walkthrough of all of my code to make sure nothing is missed. 1) A UIViewController calls the "authorize" method NSArray *fbPerms = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"read_stream", @"offline_access", nil]; [[FacebookSingleton sharedInstance].facebook authorize:fbPerms delegate:self]; Note: The FacebookSingleton is a class I wrote that always returns a single instance of the "Facebook" class. I am using it successfully in other applications. 2) Safari is opened and the user is successfully authenticated and authorized 3) The application is called back and the "handleOpenUrl" method is called, which calls the "fbDidLogin" method of the UIViewController - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application handleOpenURL:(NSURL *)url { Facebook *fb = [FacebookSingleton sharedInstance].facebook; return [fb handleOpenURL:url]; } 4) The same UIViewController handles the "fbDidLogin" event, and calls the "dialog" method - (void)fbDidLogin { [[FacebookSingleton sharedInstance].facebook dialog:@"feed" andDelegate:self]; } I also have the necessary "URL Schemes" and "URL Types" entries in the .plist file. To my eyes, I am using exactly the same code in the "DemoApp", "Tester", and production applications. But while the DemoApp and Tester work, I always see this HTML error in the feed dialog in my production application. Has anyone seen a similar issue? Could it be related to the Facebook "Bundle ID" setting in the Facebook application settings? Is there some build or .plist setting that is different? • I installed XAMPP in a virtual drive and now I can't run its services. Why?

  Hi, The description is quite long. Please spend some time to read it. ^:)^ I have an old PHP application and I'm trying to test and debug it. Unfortunately, the application uses important data so I can't just click this and that. Now, what I'm trying to do is create a copy of the application in a different computer. From now on, I will call the computer running my original PHP application as 'Computer A' and the computer which I'm going to use to run the copy of the application as 'Computer B'. To prevent missing link problems since the application contains static paths, such in images or tags, I have to copy all files and folder related to my PHP application from Computer A to the same path in Computer B. Unfortunately, Computer B only has drive C while Computer A has drive D and the files of my PHP application is located in 'D:\xampp\htdocs' in Computer A. OK, now I have to create drive D in computer B. At first, I tried to create a second partition in Computer B by using PowerQuest Partition Magic 8, but somehow Partition Magic doesn't run in Computer B. I have tried to reinstall it but it still doesn't run. So, another alternative is to create a virtual drive. That is what I did. I created a virtual drive by running the 'subst' command in Command Prompt. The virtual drive is D and it refers to a directory, which is 'C:\Virtual'. After I have drive D in Computer B, I installed XAMPP there. The installation was successful. Now, I also have 'D:\xampp\htdocs' in Computer B. However, when I ran the Apache, MySQL, or Filezilla service, I receive an error message "Error 3: The system cannot find the file specified.". In Computer B, there is no IIS or process using the port 80. What should I do? Please help me. Many thanks in advance, Haris
