• Ubuntu 12.10 installation. Hit or miss Booting

  I just recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 12.10. I also completely wiped the laptop. The Ubuntu OS will only boot part of the time but never on the first time. Always, the first start up will automatically go to a purple screen and stay there. At first I waited for 45 minutes and nothing changed. Once I held down the power button to turn it off, I turned it back on to see the Asus screen followed by the grub menu. I can select "Ubuntu" and then there is a white box blinking in the top left corner. Then, it will either keep blinking or transfer to the Ubuntu loading screen(everything works fine if it gets to the loading screen). This has never happened before with prior versions of Ubuntu. Any ideas are helpful. Thanks!

• Tricky mod_rewrite challenge

  I list about 9,000 records on my little site. At the moment I'm showing them with a dynamic page, like http://domain.com/records.php?id=019031 But I'd like to start using meaningful URLs like this one on Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Library-Mythology-Oxford-Worlds-Classics/dp/0199536325 where the title string on the root level gets ignored and requests are redirected to the records.php page, which accepts the ID as usual. Does anybody know how I could achieve that with mod_rewrite? I'm wondering how I'd deal with requests to my other root-level pages, like http://domain.com/contact.php, that I don't want to redirect to the records page.

  I'm hoping there's a book or something out there for me to get... If I have a class that has Collection as an instance variable, what is that method of coding called? A design pattern? If so, where can I find more information on it? As I've been working with this mentor, he's really helped me understand my programming weakness and that weakness is thinking in terms of collections or relationships between objects. It just seems so difficult for me right now and I need to read to become smarter. • VMware Player and Ubuntu 12.04 - Full Screen

  I have installed VMware Player 4.0.2 under Ubuntu 12.04 (Final) and, apart from having to patch the modules, everything went smoothly. However, there's an irritating behavior when toggling full screen mode: toggling full screen (using Virtual Machine Toggle Full Screen or Ctrl + Alt + Return), minimizing the player and maximizing it again changes the resolution of the guest to some strange one and the player gets "nested" between GNOME3's taskbar as every other of Ubuntu's native windows. To switch to full screen again I have to Ctrl + Alt + Return twice. Can anyone please tell me if this is the nromal, expected behavior? Is there any way of "correcting" it? The host operating system is Ubuntu 12.04 (Final) and the guest is Windows 7 (both 64 bits).

• Optical Character Recognition software recommendations?

  I have seen some ebooks/papers that were apparently scanned from their paper versions but the text in the ebooks/papers can amazingly be copied out. I suppose the directly-scanned versions must have been processed by some Optical Character Recognition software. So I would like to know what are the recommended Optical Character Recognition softwares? Especially those that are either for Ubuntu or free? If those for Windows are far more superior, please let me know as well. I am particularly interested in those OCRs that can accept a scanned pdf file as input and still produce as output another pdf file that looks the same as the input one but with its text copyable.   I wish to remove Ubuntu and I'm not quite sure how. I know it has something to do with partitions. I have 3 partitions. 1. OS [683 GB] 2. Recovery [14 GB] 3. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (E:) I know it says Ubuntu but when I installed Ubuntu I think I put 14 gigabytes for it so I think its the recovery one but I'm not sure. I could have sworn I put more than 700 megabytes for it. I have googled this and I can't seem to find an answer. Any help would be nice.

• Can exim be configured to send all emails externally?

  How do I configure exim4 to route all emails via a third-party SMTP server when the sender's domain, recipient's domain, and server hostname all match? I followed this great answer and have exim4 sending emails to addresses at other domains tested and working from an Ubuntu server. My only issue is that emails where both the sender and recipient share the same domain as the server hostname, they never leave the server (and this is the expected behavior). For example, sending from [email protected] -- [email protected] works fine, but sending from [email protected] -- [email protected] just routes the mail locally to /var/mail/account2, without passing through the third-party SMTP server. I'm using Google Apps at my own domain and want to send emails from [email protected] to [email protected] from a machine with the hostname example.com. I want to route them through Google's SMTP server so I see them in my other email clients. Is this possible? Very similar questions (but for postfix) here and here.

• SEO: Is promoting your backlinks a good strategy for improving search results for my site's name?

  I run a website that's been around for about three years in the sports space. I am successfully ranking well for targeted keywords, but searching for the name of my site itself returns very poor results - it shows my site, its FB/Twitter, and then 15 pages of unrelated spam that happen to contain two words that, when combined, form my website's name. After that, my backlinks begin to show up spordically. As far as I can tell, I simply don't have enough backlinks and the backlinks I do have are ranked worse than the spam. (Site Explorer lists 200 external links to any page on our domain and 20 external links directly to the front page). To counter this, my strategy is to promote my backlinks so they get a better page rank than the spam. Does that make sense? Am I going in the right direction or should I just focus on getting more backlinks pointing directly to my site? • Check if the vector is behind another or maybe opposite directions?

  I'm doing a network game and on the client side, i interpolate the client position with the server sent extrapolated position. The client has its own physics simulation wich is corrected by the server in steps. The problem is when it laggs and i 'kick' the ball, the server gets a delayed message and sends me the position backwards of the client position wich makes the ball goes back and forth. I want to ignore those and maybe compensate that on the server, not sure though. The problem is the clock difference on those case are 0.07ms or 0.10 ms wich isn't that high to ignore the message i guess. When i get the server position, i extrapolate with the clock interval * serverBallVelocity Can i check if my new ball server position is behind my actual ball vector position? I tried to use the dot product after normalized the two vectors to check if they are opposite but it ain't working properly. Any suggestions on checking that?

• Error after updating from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 10.10

  Note: This was posted 6 months ago. Please read my answer below. I updated to 10.10 from 10.04 last week. After rebooting it shows "error "prefix" not found" for half a second and then it's stuck at a flashing line forever!! I installed 10.04 again and I didn't upgrade to 10.10 directly because the flashing line looks creepy and I don't want to see it again. What should I do now?? PS: I want to upgrade to 10.10 I am using wubi I hate that flashing line

• Is there a program to manage movies and TV shows that supports mp4 tags?

  I'm looking for a media manager that will display and play movies and TV shows and will read data included in mp4 and m4v files. So far I've looked at XBMC, Moovida and Boxee and all of these seem to keep their own separate database or XML files for reading and storing tag information. I also looked at Banshee because of this answer, but it didn't read my tags. Banshee is also geared towards music videos instead of actual movies and TV shows. So I'm looking for software that Displays and plays movies and TV Shows Reads mp4 and m4v tags Preferably something with bulk import (i.e., I don't want to add 1,000 items to a new library) Bonus if it also has a tag editor Bonus if it's an XBMC extension

• Is C++ really a bad language for beginners? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Is C++ suitable as a first language? 24 answers I'm learning C++ right now, and it's the first language I'm learning. I keep seeing on stackexchange and other forums (Reddit, etc.) that I should drop C++ and learn a higher level language like Python or Java. The only arguments I see are that "C++ is harder to learn and is more low-level than others." which don't really give a reason NOT to learn it. I want to know if there are any actual reasons for dropping C++ and taking up another, "easier" language. Or if I should keep focusing on it, and just learn others later (which is what I plan on doing).

• No user/password boxes on login screen after updates today (June 30, 2012)

  Just installed today's batch of updates, including new kernel 3.2.0-26 and rebooted. Now the screen just has a logo in the middle and "Ubuntu 12.04 LTS" in bottom left corner, but no box to choose which user to log in as, or to enter a password. CTRL-ALT-F1 gets me to a "login:" prompt, and I can log in - but I have no idea what to look at to find out what is wrong, or to fix this. Tried older kernels and recovery mode for current kernel - no joy, still no way to log into the graphics console.

• Cloudflare displaying cached CSS in-line?

  I recently enabled CloudFlare on my domain, and when I make HTML statements like this: <link href="css/main.css" rel="stylesheet" /> The CSS gets displayed in-line, like this: <style>body{padding-top:40px}span.light{font-weight:lighter!important}span.title{font-size:60px;line-height:1;letter-spacing:-1px;color:inherit}</style> When I update the file via FTP, the changes are not reflected, which leads me to believe that this is a caching issue. Is this due to CloudFlare? If so, how do I disable the behavior? EDIT I also came to the conclusion that caching is behind the behavior after being able to see changes in the page after re-naming the CSS file.

• What exercises counter the back pain of sitting at a computer for 15 hours a day? [on hold]

  I work up to 15 hours a day (not everyday :)) programming. When I do this I get a very sore lower back. I don't want to spend $1000 on a special chair like Joel Spolsky says. I'm sure I'm not alone here. Has anybody encountered this and found an exercise/other method to combat it? Maybe somebody with more physical education than me about opposing muscle groups or something. PS (not working fifteen hours a day isn't an answer, it's how I work best) and it's not off topic as programming is about more than code - it's a verb.

• Alot of Pirated Material on Someone's Website - What Can Be Done?

  Hi, We've developed our website for over 10 years. Recently a website in China has begun to pirate our images and product descriptions (they are showing "new" March offerings). Nearly all of the items they "offer" are ours. Their whois leads to an outfit in France which by chance also hosts a website for Steroids, and both the Steroid and the pirate site share an 800 phone number (coincidence??). The pirate site lists "their" products as being available in mass quantities, though very often the actual product is one-of-a-kind. The images they've stolen appear in google searches alongside our own!! Clicking on any product at the pirate site leads to nowhere. Calls to the 800 number lead to a recorded answer.   I am about to design a video conversion service, that is scalable on the conversion side. The architecture is as follows: Webpage for video upload When done, a message gets sent out to one of several resizing servers The server locates the video, saves it on disk, and converts it to several formats and resolutions The resizing server uploads the output to a content server, and messages back that the conversion is done. Messaging is something I have covered, but right now I am transferring via FTP, and wonder if there is a better way? is there something faster, or more reliable? All the servers will be sitting in the same gigabit switch or neighboring switch, so fast transfer is expected.

  So I did some research and a found Box2d. I then proceeded to download it and the testbed. Now that i have it, I don't know how to properly use it.
