• Apache+LDAP auth on Ubuntu says "Can't contact LDAP server" while ldapsearch is perfect

  Hi Gurus, I'm migrating from an existing apache+LDAP+mysql+php server to a new hardware platform. Old server is running Debian Lenny, which I have no config documentation available (was done by previous sysadmin); New server is running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS 32bit. After installing Apache and configured LDAP client on the new server, ldapsearch to the LDAP master (another dedicated server) returns results just fine. However, when using apache with https, logs complain that "Can't contact LDAP server". I'm authenticating using ldaps and can confirm that 636 port is open on the LDAP master. I can't understand why apache would fail while regular ldapsearch is working! • Compiling a program with a legacy version of gcc

  This is probably a very difficult problem to troubleshoot with the information I can practically provide, but I'm hoping someone might be able to at least point me in a possible direction. I'm trying to install HTK (http://htk.eng.cam.ac.uk/), which, according to this page needs to be installed using gcc 3.4. Their method of implementing backwards compatibility: #yum install compat-gcc-34-c++ compat-gcc-34 won't work for me as I'm running Ubuntu (On that note, I take it I can't simply install YUM and the subsequent package, since it's an entirely different distro, but if I'm wrong I'd love to hear it). I instead installed two versions of gcc 3.4 - 3.4.0 and 3.4.6 using instructions from this site. I then added the lines suggested by that page to the top of the makefile (on this note, what's the difference between makefile and makefile.in? I tried adding the lines to the top of both files regardless), both for version 3.4.0 and 3.4.6, but both failed. I also tried, on the off-chance, compiling it with my current version (4.4.1), but that also failed. • ubuntu: Installed php-mcrypt but it doesn't show up in phpinfo()

  A web app I'm trying to install on my ubuntu 10.04 LTS requires mcrypt, and is generating this error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function mcrypt_module_open(). I know this is the same question as this one: Installed php-mcrypt but it doesn't show up in phpinfo(), but I tried several things, none of which worked, and have additional questions. I would comment on the original thread but don't have enough reputation to do so; forgive me for the duplicate question. My versions of php and mcrypt are (both installed via apt-get): php: 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10 mcrypt: 5.3.2-0ubuntu Doing a php -m shows that the mcrypt module is installed. I installed mcrypt and php5-mcrypt via apt-get. Also, I'm using nginx as my web server. I have tried reinstalling mcrypt and restarting nginx, but still can't get mcrypt to show up on phpinfo() and calls to mcrypt are still broken. Here is some more info: $ php -i | grep "mcrypt" /etc/php5/cli/conf.d/mcrypt.ini, mcrypt mcrypt support => enabled mcrypt.algorithms_dir => no value => no value mcrypt.modes_dir => no value => no value I also checked that mcrypt is on in /etc/php5/cli/conf.d/mcrypt.ini and /etc/php5/cgi/conf.d/mcrypt.ini. Lastly, I'm using fastCGI with nginx. I googled around and saw suggestions to restart php5-fpm. I couldn't find php5-fpm in apt-get, I'm not sure if I still need php5-fpm since I already have fastCGI. Is there anything else I'm missing?

  This morning some sites which are hosted on the server as me started triggering malware alerts and started to redirect traffic to external sites. I've found out that a line of packed javascript was added to many js files across the server. What the script does is pretty simple, but what I would like to know is if this malware is well known and how it infect servers and propagate. For the curious here's the javascript line in question: • Deploying a Django application in a virtual Ubuntu Server

  I have a virtualbox machine running Ubuntu Server 10.04LTS. My intention is to this machine to work like a VPS, this way I can learn and prepare for when I get a VPS service. Apache+mod_wsgi for deploying the Django app seems the right choice to me. I have the domain (marianofalcon.com.ar) but nothing else, no DNS. The problem is that I'm pretty lost with all the deployment stuff. I know how to configure mod_wsgi(with the django.wsgi file) and apache(creating a VirtualHost). Something is missing and I don't know what it is. I think that I lack networking skills ant that's the big problem. Trying to host the app on a virtualbox adds some difficulty because I don't know well what IP to use. • Single Sign On 802.1x Wireless - saying “Connecting to <SSID>”, hangs for 10 seconds, fails with “Unable to connect to <SSID>, Logging on…”.

  We are implementing WiFi on Windows 7 machines in our corporate environment. Machines should be able to log into the domain by WiFi as the Machine (Pre-Logon), and as the User (Post-Logon). We have everything working correctly except for 2 things: 1) Sometimes the login scripts don't run 2) The user VLAN is sometimes different than the machine vlan, and no DHCP renew occurs after user logon. I am clear that both these problems should be fixable by using the "Single Sign On" Option under the 802.1x Wireless Vista GPO, and setting the wireless to connect immediately before user logon and also by enabling "This network uses different VLAN for authentication with machine and user credentials" If I enable these GPO settings in a lab, the computer does authenticate & gets WIFI before the user logs on, so when the login box is displayed, it says “Windows will try to connect to ”, even though it is already connected (which should be ok?). Enter the user credentials and it goes to a screen saying “Connecting to ”, hangs for 10 seconds, fails with “Unable to connect to , Logging on…”. Desktop fires up and then the user re-authenticates with no problem as himself instead of the machine, but by that point, we defeat the point of the WiFi SSO “before user logon”. Also by that point, no DHCP renew seems to occur, and the user is still stuck with the wrong IP address for the new VLAN. When the “Connecting to ” screen comes up, there’s no indication on the AP or the Radius server that anything whatsoever is happening after credentials are entered until after the domain logon. Also with this policy enabled, sometimes windows hangs on a black screen indefinitely until I disable the Wireless NIC, so something is knackered for sure. What have I missed? Suggestions are much appreciated... /P

• How LINQ to Object statements work

  This post goes into detail as to now LINQ statements work when querying a collection of objects. This topic assumes you have an understanding of how generics, delegates, implicitly typed variables, lambda expressions, object/collection initializers, extension methods and the yield statement work. I would also recommend you read my previous two posts: Using Delegates in C# Part 1 Using Delegates in C# Part 2 We will start by writing some methods to filter a collection of data. Let us change it so that it is capable of doing different types of filtering and lets give our method the name Where ;-) We will add another parameter to our Where method. This additional parameter will be a delegate with the following declaration. public delegate bool Filter(Employee emp); The idea is that the delegate parameter in our Where method will point to a method that contains the logic to do our filtering thereby freeing our Where method from any dependency. We can do this, like before, with lambda expressions. Our Select method is changed to accept a delegate as shown below. TSource will be the type of data that comes in and TResult will be the type the user chooses (shape of data) as returned from the selector delegate. 1:  2: static IEnumerable<TResult> Select<TSource, TResult>(IEnumerable<TSource> source, Func<TSource, TResult> selector) { 3: foreach (var x in source) { 4: yield return selector(x); 5: } 6: } We see the new changes to our app. On line 15, we use lambda expression to specify the shape of the data. On line 14 we filter our data and on line 15 we project our data. What if we wanted to be more expressive and concise? We could combine both line 14 and 15 into one line as shown below. This is exactly what extension methods give us. Extension methods have to be defined in a static class. • How do I resize partitions using the simple installation wizard (installing a second Ubuntu)?

  I'm running 11.10 and installing 12.04 LTS Beta 1 off a DVD. Using the installation wizard, I picked "Install 12.04 LTS alongside 11.10". I am presented with a slider with approx 240GB on the left side and 60GB on the right. No other labels are present. I don't want to use the advanced partitioning tool. Which side is which Ubuntu? If it's relevant: I am installing only for testing purposes (I've been caught by kernel regressions before), so I want to give 12.04 the minimal amount of space required. Once the final release is made, and I've tested that too, my plan is to remove the second partition and upgrade 11.10 to 12.04.

  I could use some assistance to trying to get a Belkin N600 DB Wireless Dual-Band USB Adapter to work on a Dell Inspiron 1525 with 64-Bit Ubuntu 12.04. The device won't work out of the box. Tried to go the NDISWrapper route, but using the GUI, received the following message: Module could not be loaded. Error was: FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found. Is the ndiswrapper module installed? Despite the fact that it showed up listed in the GUI, the device still did not function properly. How should I proceed from here?
