  • CUDA instructions ask to stop GDM but it doesn't exist

    I am trying to install and run some CUDA exemples in Ubuntu 12.04. First of all, I downloaded all .run files from http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-downloads, then followed the instructions at http://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-gpu-computing-, until I got hung up on the first step: Exit the GUI if you are in a GUI environment by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. Some distributions require you to press this sequence twice in a row; others have disabled it altogether in favor of a command such as sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop . Still others require changing the system runlevel using a command such as /sbin/init 3 to exit the GUI. When I type the command sudo /etc/init.d/gdmstop, it returns: gdm command not found Can anybody help me exit my GUI in order to continue? Thank you in advance.

  • Exim redirect all unexisting accounts for local domains to a specific account

    I want to route all incoming emails for local domains only to a single account if an account is not setup for that user. I would also like each email to be written in it's own file in user folder. I have a catchall user with /home/catchall/ path where I have a mail folder made for this but so far emails wither fail to deliver (thus my rule did not work) or they do deliver to /etc/mail/catchall file. I have been trying to put something together from the Exim configuration but so far nothing seem to work. http://exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/ch20.html

  • Windows8, JavaScript and HTML5 - A good thing?

    Most of us have seen the Windows 8 news regarding support for native HTML5/JavaScript applications. The press has pushed this as a potential threat to the .NET developer community because JavaScript and HTML5 were called "our new developer platform". The press release refers to "Web-connected and Web-powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript that have access to the full power of the PC.".Microsoft has also been hush on details related to these comments. Before we buy the hype and start worrying about a world where we drop our Visual Studio licenses and buy DreamWeaver - let's think about how Windows 8 HTML/JavaScript applications would be implemented. The HTML5 spec offers support for offline applications, but this won't offer the OS-integrated experience the press release refers to. MS has to be planning a way to extend access beyond the traditional JavaScript feature set. Microsoft has a similar option today: HTML Applications or HTAs. They come close to required features, but HTAs need ActiveX or Java integration to provide the promised OS-level access. I'm guessing that Microsoft's future OS strategy isn't built on developers cranking out ActiveX controls or Java applets. So where is Microsoft headed? One possibility is that MS builds a new JavaScript framework from the ground up outside their current APIs. Another idea would be for Microsoft to add support for JavaScript as a first class .NET language using the Dynamic Language Runtime. A solution based on the DLR could be integrated into an HTA-like model to provide the promised access, along with the full range of features in .NET Framework. Security comes included in the Framework. And the work necessary to support this integration would tie in nicely with the effort MS has recently made providing better JavaScript and HTML5 support in Visual Studio 2010. As a bonus, a full-fledged JavaScript DLR implementation would allow single language web solutions across client and server (think node.js) and would appeal to developers who are familiar with JavaScript but have less experience with the Microsoft tech stack. We will all get a better picture after the Build conference in September. But in the mean time we know that Microsoft has a reputation for providing strong developer support. We might want to reserve our harshest judgement and consider that the press release could hint at new opportunities for .NET development.

So far we have rejected two candidates on the basis that their code, although readable and in one case rather idiomatic, suffered from buffer overflow errors due to unbounded buffer writes.     I'm using wget --mirror --html-extension --convert-links to mirror a site, but I end up with lots of filenames in the format post.php?id=#.html. When I try to view these in a browser it fails, because the browser ignores the query string when loading the file. Is there any way to replace the ? character in the filenames with something else? The answer of --restrict-file-names=windows worked correctly. In conjunction with the flags --convert-links and --adjust-extension/-E (formerly named --html-extension, which also works but is deprecated) it produces a mirror that behaves as expected. wget --mirror --adjust-extension --convert-links --restrict-file-names=windows http://www.example

  • How to find source of 301/302 redirect loop? Heroku GoDaddy Zerigo

    this should be a relatively simple problem but I'm having trouble.I hope this is the right forum to post on as I've seen people get booted off stack-overflow for this sort of thing. I've setup a web app on heroku (cedar stack) at my-web-app.herokuapp.com and I'm trying to direct my-domain.com and www.my-domain.com to it. As per instructions on the heroku documentation, I've set my-domain.com to redirect (forwarding) to www.my-domain.com and then set a C-Name from www.my-domain.com to my-web-app.herokuapp.com. But the C-Name doesn't seem to be working right and is sending back to my-domain.com, causing a loop and I can't work out why. I first configured these setting at GoDaddy.com where I registered the domain but then tried to avoid the problem by using Heroku's Zerigo DNS add-on, setting the nameservers on GoDaddy to the ones given for Zerigo. However the problem remains.     I'll try to keep this simple: I'm 29, been dabbling with computers for the past 10 years, had entry level jobs in tech support for different apps, been fixing computers for a while and now want to specialize in something. I'm not 100% stranger to programming but haven't gone past if/then/else with anything. A bit of JavaScript, PHP, Python and currently checking out the "SELECT" statement in SQL :)) I'm curious about programming, I enjoy it and I'm thinking of making a living out of it. So, while I'm at it, why not earn a bit more than the average Joe? So, that's why I'm checking what the best solution, the best learning path and the most useful languages are considering: a) how easy/fast can you find a job by knowing it b) how much would I be able to earn c) how fast can I learn it By reading 10-20 articles online I've come up with an example, but I'm here for some expert advice. Example: * ratings from a) and b) point of view #1 sql ; #2 java ; #3 html (please don't start the markup language debate) ; #4 javascript From this ratings, I'd say a good way to go is learn html/css/(javascript or php) for the web part of apps, some SQL/MySQL/whateverSQL for holding data and loads of Java for the program itself. Please let me know if this is a good idea and if so, what should be the order for learning all of the above. Else, please let me know a better way and why it would be better.   • What technology should I concentrate on for mobile development? [closed]

    Firstly, I have many years experience with C# & .NET and some with Java. But, rather than committing to Java and developing native applications for Andriod I have been researching cross-platform deployment technologies. Currently, the most powerful cross-platform technology seems to be Flash, using Adobe AIR to package software as native applications. But given Adobe's announcement that it will discontinue support for the Flash Player on mobile devices it seems foolish (at this late stage) to invest in Flash and ActionScript as a developer. There has been speculation that Microsoft are also planning their exit strategy for Silverlight in favour of HTML5. So, my questions are; What is the most appropriate technology to invest in and learn in order to build cross-platform mobile applications / games while future proofing my skills as a developer? Is HTML5 mature enough to fill the 'Flash void' and be used to start building cross-platform, rich, interactive, networked mobile applications / games now? N.B. I have noticed many JavaScript methods using single character parameter names, such as in the following example. doSomething(a,b,c) I don't like it, but a fellow JavaScript developer convinced me that this is done to reduce the file size, noting that JavaScript files have to be transferred to the browser. Then I found myself talking to another developer. He showed me the way that Firefox will truncate variable names to load the page faster. Is this a standard practice for web browsers? What are the best-practice naming conversions that should be followed when programming in JavaScript? Does identifier length matter, and if so, to what extent?

  • Making simple forms in web applications

    How do you work with forms in your web applications? I am not talking about RESTful applications, I don't want to build heavy front-end using frameworks like Backbone. For example, I need to add "contact us" form. I need to check data which was filled by user and tell him that his data was sent. Requirements: I want to use AJAX. I want to validate form on back-end side and don't want to duplicate the same code on front-end side. I have my own solution, but it doesn't satisfy me. I make an AJAX request with serialized data on form submit and get response. The next is checking "Content-type" header. html - It means that errors with filling form are exists and response html is form with error labels. - I will replace my form with response html. json and response.error_code == 0 - It means that form was successfully submited. - I will show user notification about success. json and response.error_code != 0 - Something was broken on back-end (like connection with database). other - I display the following message : We have been notified and have started to work with that problem. Please, try it later. The problem of that way is that I can't use it with forms that upload file. What is your practise? What libraries and principles do you use?

  • Why do we keep using CSV?

    Why do we keep using CSV? I recently made a shift to working the health domain and despite the wonderful work in data transfer standards, all data transfer is in CSV, both for reporting to external organisations, and for data migrations when implementing new systems. Unfortunately the use of CSV is the cause of the endless repetition of the same stupid errors, with the same waste of developer time. (bad escaping, failing to handle null fields etc.) I know we can do better, and anything between JSON and XML (depending on the instance) would be fine. (Most of the time this is data going from one MS SQLserver 2005 to another!) I feel as if each time I see this happening I am literally watching one developer waste anothers time. So why do we keep shafting each other? When will we stop?
