• Places to find free software projects who need developers/project managers?

  While I have plenty of project management "booksmarts" and a handful of PM experience, I don't seem to have enough experience to get the sort of job I want. Since "I read another PM book/blog today" doesn't really count, I was thinking I could find some free/open source software (FOSS) projects who are looking for/hiring project managers or developers and see if there was anything I could volunteer for. Does anyone know of any FOSS employment sites where I might be able to find such projects? Something similar to careers.stackoverflow.com. I know I could just go to sourceforge/freshmeat and look around, but I was hoping to find some site that fills this need (and if any such sites exist, my google-fu is apparently VERY weak at finding them).

• Schema.org vs microformats

  They both server the same purpose: providing a vocabulary for semantic markup. Schema is recognized and standardized... but microformats are open. Schema exploits microdata, while microformats go on classes. (Of note: microdata means that an element must be of a single itemtype, while microformats allow several classes to apply to the same element. I can markup xFolk+hAtom with classes, but not with microdata.) Is this a black-and-white situation? Google says I can't use both "because it may confuse the parser". What's the consensus on these?

• Change guest username

  Now, looking around on Google shows me some ways in which to customise the settings of the Guest session. But, I would love a way to change the name of the Guest account. Basically, I'm planning to take some laptops out to a school in Africa and want to rename the "Guest" account in 14.04 to "Student" so the students use that. They tend to store stuff on USB sticks and they're using the Guest account so they can't break anything. EDIT: I'll expand on this slightly. They're using the guest account simply for the reason it doesn't save anything after logoff. This was a specific thing the teachers have asked for. I don't mind if the actual username remains guest behind the scenes, but as long as it shows up as Student to on Unity. Any way of going about this?

At the moment I track these in a google doc, but ideally like a system where I can browse the teams objectives, add a team objective and it automatically appear on members personal objectives. Also where team members can add/manage their own objectives, browse colleges public/team objectives. Ideally it would also have option for people to add personal out side of work objectives for personal dev projects. Anyone used a tool to do this? our a combination of existing tools like gdocs, rtm?

  How does one fix (or report an error) on an 'immutable' help.ubuntu.community wiki page? I am a registered member of the wiki. On http://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeNX under the section: Installing the FreeNX server on Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) and higher, step #2, bjorn-nostvold erroneously changed on 2013-01-24 "add-apt-repository" to "apt-add-repository". The original "add-apt-repository" is correct - at least on my Karmic (9.10) version of Ubuntu. By the number of confused people I've found via google search, this seems to be throwing off a lot of people, myself included.

• Will URL encoding the image names

  Just wondering if it makes any difference to Google whether or not I URL encode the image names when linking to them. For example if I have an image named "test-1234-!.jpg", does it make a difference if I name it refer to it as "test-1234-%21.jpg"? The reason I am asking is because I am doing a major shift in the way my website works and while all new image names will not be URL encoded, all of the past ones are. I want to see if it is worth it renaming all of them or if I should just leave it like that.

  I'm trying to evaluate the usefulness of Google Adwords for a friend's site. I'm trying to count the number of sales per month, and see how many have found her page because of the Adwords campaign. Her site has an online order system, but she also gets customers that buy just via the email contact and never use the online order system. There aren't many conversions per month (usually only one to three), so I don't want to miss any conversions when I want to gauge the effectiveness of a campaign. Is there a good way to also include those conversions?

  Possible Duplicate: Send and Receive SMS from my Website I would love to have a feature on my site that sends Email reminders and SmS(text messages) to people mobile phones. I been searching around and all I am finding is api's that charge money per SmS message(as low as 1cent per message). However even at 1cent per message that is still too much. The amount of money I am charging per year could be servilely eroded by just the Sms messages along. I could of course charge more money for my service or have an add on for SmS messages but I don't think either would work as most people expect it to be free feature and if they have to pay anything that is because of their carrier charging them not the website. How do other sites do it? I guessing companies like google have their own gateway providers or something like that. But how about smaller sites what do they do? I can't see them paying per sms text message.

• Resources for creating a turn-by-turn navigation system

  I'm trying to create a kind of turn-by-turn satellite navigation system using the iOS SDK. I get the directions from the server and draw them on the map, then I keep getting location updates from the iPhone's GPS chip. Currently I start by finding the nearest turning point then, each time the user comes within a certain distance of the next turning point, a verbal cue is given and the turning point index is incremented. This is a delicate system and I'd like to make it more robust so I can tell when the user is going the wrong direction etc. Basically I'm looking for some literature about turn-by-turn navigation, in terms of tracking the user's progress and whether they're going the right direction. I'd have thought there's a lot of research out there but I can't seem to find anything apart from simple tutorials on how to use a given SDK or directions API. Can anyone direct me to a good run-through of the various techniques used in software such as TomTom or Google Maps Navigation?

• Would it be possible to build a client portal on Squarespace6?

  I'm helping a family member set up a site which will need to include a secure client portal, providing access to documents and a simple database. I have been encouraging them to go with a more established, open source CSM like drupal or joomla, whose capability in this area is evident. However, they have a strong preference for Squarespace. Does any one know if it would be possible to accomplish this with the new developer platform for squarespace 6? I've spent well over an hour searching google, the squarespace site and stackexchange, but can't seem to find any clear answer to this question. I'm grateful for any insight you all can provide.

• How can I fix my problems with fonts in Firefox?

  Ever since I reinstalled Ubuntu a few hours ago, I've experienced major visual artifacts with smaller font sizes in Firefox. The fonts end up looking like this: Or even like this: This only occurs in Firefox; other applications are unaffected. I run chromium and used this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~chromium-daily/+archive/stable I just realized that it seems to be abandoned and I'm running a quite outdated version of this browser. There have not been any updates since the first of May this year. Do you know of any PPA thats actively maintained? Thanks, trmpa (Yes, I know, I could use google chrome but i would like to go with chromium if possible. Building from source is also not a good option. It's not my own machine and I need updates to work reliably without much intervention from the user)

  I have some old articles on my blog that get quite a bit of traffic, but are very outdated. I want to remove them from Google's index using the noindex tag, but I'm not sure what the best approach will be to send the same traffic to my new article on the subject without using a redirect (as I want to keep them in my blog archives). I was intending to just put a link at the top of the article pointing to the new one, but was wondering if it was appropriate to use a canonical tag instead; the new article is on the same subject but doesn't contain the same content, so isn't really a copy.

In order to be really useful, such application should have: -basic CRM functionality to track who is providing the ads -multilingual multi country support: have the ability to specify for the same ad, different versions for multiple languages/countries -predefined ad formats (google Ads, flash ads...) and sizes with corresponding PHP helpers so as to insert in the HTML code the necessary markup to properly integrate the ad. Ideally if that application could be desgined for Zend Framework that would be awesome (but I think I'm dreaming at this point).

  I would like some pointers to information which would help me understand how to go about providing the ability to filter a list of entities by their attributes as well as by attributes of related entities. As an example, imagine a web app which provides order management of some kind. Orders and related entities are stored in a relational database. And imagine that the app has an interface which lists the orders. The problem is: how does one allow the list to be filtered by, for example:- order number (an attribute) line item name (an attribute of a n-n related entity) some text in an administrative note related to the order (text found in an attribute of a 1-1 related entity) I'm trying to discover whether there is something like a standard, efficient way to construct the queries and the filtering form; or some possible strategies; or any theory on the topic; or some example code. • How important is to avoid name collisions between libraries belonging to different domains?

  I have written a small open source Java library for facilitating conversions between different types of objects (in the style of Google's gson, but quite more general). It seems to me that a nice natural name for my library is JConverter, after browsing in the web to see if another library with the same name already exists, I found a library with the same name for Joomla. My concrete question is: How important is to avoid naming collisions when creating an open source library if an existing library with the chosen name already exists in a complete different domain ? (in my concrete case, these are libraries even implemented for different languages).
