Bert Kleinschmidt pointed out that pins 2,3 and 10 of the Galileo are connected directly to the SOC, while pin 13, the one used for the sample sketch is controlled via an I2C I/O expander. I changed my code to use pin 2 instead of 13 (just changing the variable assignment at the beginning of the code) and latency was greatly reduced. Now each pulse lasts for 1.44ms, 44% more than the expected time, but ways better that the result we got using pin 13. I also used SetThreadPriority to increase the priority of the thread that was running the sketch to THREAD_PRIORITY_HIGHEST but that didn't change the results. When I was using the I2C-controlled pin I tried the same and the timings got ways worse (increasing more than 10 times) and so I did not commented on that part, wanting to investigate the issua a bit more in detail. It seems that increasing the priority of the application thread impacts negatively the I2C communication. I tried to use also the Linux-based implementation (using a different Galileo board since the one provided by MS seems to use a different firmware) and the results of running the sample blink sketch modified to use pin 2 and blink the led for 1ms are similar to those we got on the same board running Windows. Here the difference between expected time and measured time is worse, getting around 3.2ms instead of 1 (320% compared to 150% using Windows but far from the 100.1% we got with the 8-bit Arduino). Both systems were not under load during the test, maybe loading some applications that use part of the CPU time would make those timings even less reliable, but I think that those numbers are enough to draw some conclusions. It may not be worth running a full OS if what you need is Arduino compatibility. The Arduino UNO is probably the best Arduino you can find to perform this kind of development. The Galileo running the Linux-based stack or running Windows for IoT is targeted to be a platform for "Internet of Things" devices, whatever that means. At the moment I don't see the "I" part of IoT. We have low level interfaces (SPI, I2C, the GPIO pins) that can be used to connect sensors but the support for connectivity is limited and the amount of work required to deliver some data to the cloud (using a secure HTTP request or a message queuing system like APMQS or MQTT) is still big and the rich OS underneath seems to not provide any help doing that.Why should I use sockets and can't access all the high level connectivity features we have on "full" Windows?I know that it's possible to use some third party libraries, try to build them using the Windows For IoT SDK etc. but this means re-inventing the wheel every time and can also lead to some IP concerns if used for products meant to be closed-source. I hope that MS and Intel (and others) will focus less on the "coolness" of running (some) Arduino sketches and more on providing a better platform to people that really want to design devices that leverage internet connectivity and the cloud processing power to deliver better products and services. Providing a reliable set of connectivity services would be a great start. Providing support for .NET would be even better, leaving native code available for hardware access etc. I know that those components may require additional storage and memory etc. So making the OS componentizable (or, at least, provide a way to install additional components) would be a great way to let developers pick the parts of the system they need to develop their solution, knowing that they will integrate well together. I can understand that the Arduino and Raspberry Pi* success may have attracted the attention of marketing departments worldwide and almost any new development board those days is promoted as "XXX response to Arduino" or "YYYY alternative to Raspberry Pi", but this is misleading and prevents companies from focusing on how to deliver good products and how to integrate "IoT" features with their existing offer to provide, at the end, a better product or service to their customers. Marketing is important, but can't decide the key features of a product (the OS) that is going to be used to develop full products for end customers integrating it with hardware and application software. I really like the "hackable" nature of open-source devices and like to see that companies are getting more and more open in releasing information, providing "hackable" devices and supporting developers with documentation, good samples etc. On the other side being able to run a sketch designed for an 8 bit microcontroller on a full-featured application processor may sound cool and an easy upgrade path for people that just experimented with sensors etc. on Arduino but it's not, in my humble opinion, the main path to follow for people who want to deliver real products.   *Shameless self-promotion: if you are looking for a good book in Italian about the Raspberry Pi , try mine: http://www.amazon.it/Raspberry-Pi-alluso-Digital-LifeStyle-ebook/dp/B00GYY3OKO

• Using Vim on the ipad... Any tips?

  I'm itching to program on my ipad. With the iSSH app I was able to log on to my university's server and even open an X server window. Unfortunately, the experience within iSSH is still rather clumsy. When using vim, the bottom line is hidden by the keyboard. Does anyone have any experience with SSH connections and the ipad or iphone? Are there better applications to use? I would prefer not to jailbreak my ipad.

• Yet another php ereg fix

  I have a small chunk of coding I need to take from ereg to preg_match. Here is the code. function be_file_list($d, $x) { foreach (array_diff(scandir($d), array('.', '..')) as $f) { if (is_file($d . '/' . $f) && (($x) ? ereg($x.'$',$f) : 1)) { $l[] = $f; } } return $l; } This code works as expected even if it doesn't look too pretty (source: http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.scandir.php) but as ereg is deprecated, I would really like to make it preg_match, or something like that. I have been messing with this all afternoon and the PC is about to go out the window. I would have thought that preg_match("/"$x.'$',$f"/") would have worked but no dice. Any help would be great. • How to start a process from another application and then open a terminal to that process in gnu scre

  I'd like to be able to launch a process from a GUI application (right now I'm thinking specifically of letting an eclipse user -- possibly via a plugin -- click a button to launch a build using my organization's build system). I don't want this process to stop when I stop the parent application, and I want to be able to "switch into it" later, as though I launched it from a command line. I've seen GNU screen described as good for most of what I'm asking for, but I'm not sure about the "launch the process from another application" part. Can this be done if the GUI application was itself launched from within screen? Can this be done if it wasn't? I'd be very interested in seeing how! Update: Prepending "screen" to a command line looks like a good way to start a process in screen from a shell, but I'm trying to find a way to do this without being taken straight into that session. I want to "send" the command to a screen session, where it will be started in a new window in that session.

  OK, so it's almost a programming question - The VS2008 dialog event wizard has stopped working. Double-clicking on a button in an MFC dialog project does not fire the wizard as usual and a right-click to get to the 'Add Event Handler...' shows a dialog with no message types. Further to this the MFC message mapping and virtual class listing that generally appears in the properties window (Alt + Enter) is now empty. Has anyone elese seen this and if so, how'd they fix it? I have 'repaired' my VS08 installation ... Thx++ Jerry

• can i change the black background of an iphone app?

  My app is structured like this, a single MainWindow with window backgroundColor to white(which doesn't appear anywhere anyway), and in this nib i have a UINavigationController which doesn't seems to have a backgroundColor. Any view controller is added from code and made from code and they have a gray background. What happens is that when i rotate the iphone and the views are rotating as well, i see a black background under my views. Can this be changed? It looks ugly especially if i have a photo that is rotating in the same time with my gray background.

  I am developing a a game in Flash using the PureMVC framework. From time to time I need to show dialog pop-up window to get a user response back (e.g. "Cancel", "OK" and other kinds of asynchronous user feedback) while "locking" the background for interactivity. I need some management for my pop-ups: all pop-up notifications should be stacked up, so that if two (or more) pop-up messages are initiated at the same time I show them one by one. What's the best practice here? Should I employ a proxy to manage my pop-ups (sounds unreasonable). How do I get feedback back from my dialog? using notifications?

• How to create column width in CSS that expands with large images yet stays a default size for normal

  I am creating an HTML5 web page with a one column layout. Basically, it is a forum thread with individual posts. I have specified in my CSS file the column to be 600px wide and centered it in the window using margin: 0 auto;. However, some images that are in the individual posts are larger than 600px and spill out of the column. I'd like to widen an individual post to fit the larger images. However, I want all the other posts to still be 600px wide. Right now, I'm just using overflow:auto which will create a scroll bar, but this is less than ideal. Is this possible to have the an individual post width grow for larger content yet stay fixed for normal content? Is this possible using just pure CSS? Thanks in advance!

• Microsoft BUILD 2013 Day 1&ndash;Keynote

The keynote for the first day of BUILD 2013 was kicked off by Steve Balmer.  He made it very clear that Microsoft’s focus is on accelerating its time to market with products and product updates.  His quote was that “Rapid release” is the new norm.  He continued by showing off several new Lumias that have been buzzing around the internet for a while and announce that Sprint will now be carrying the HTC 8XT and Samsung ATIV. Balmer is known for repeating words or phrase for affect.  This time it was “Rapid release, rapid release” and “Touch, touch, touch, touch, touch, …”.  This was fun, but even more fun was when he announce that all attendees would receive an Acer Iconia 8” tablet. SCORE! The next subject Balmer focused on is new apps.  The three new ones were Flipboard, Facebook and NFL Fantasy Football.  I liked the first two because these are ones that people coming from other platforms are missing.  The NFL app is great just because it targets a demographic that can be fanatical.  If these types of apps keep coming than the missing app argument goes away. While many Negative Nancy’s are describing Windows 8.1 as Windows 180 Steve Balmer chose to call it a “refined blend” as in a coffee that has been improved with a new mix.  This includes more multi-tasking options and leveraging Bing straight throughout the entire ecosystem. He ended this first section by explaining that this will also bring more Bing development opportunities to the community. Steve Balmer was followed by Julie Larson-Green who spent her time on stage selling us on Windows 8 all over again from my point of view.  Something that I would not have thought was needed until I had listened to some other attendees who had a number of concerns and complaints.  She showed a number of new gestures that will come with Windows 8.1, and while they were cool I was left wondering if they really improved the experience.  I guess only time will tell. I did like the fact that it the UI implementation to bring up “All Apps” now mirrors that of Windows Phone.  The consistency is a big step forward that I hope to see continue.  The cool factor went up from there as she swiped content from a desktop (mega-tablet) to the XBox One.  This seamless experience I believe is what is really needed for any future platform to be relevant. I was much more enthused by the presentation of Antoine Leblond who humbled us by letting us know that there are 5k new API.  How that can be or how anyone would ever use all of them is another question.  His announcement was that the Visual Studio 2013 preview would be available today along with the Windows 8.1 bits.  One of the features of VS2013 that he demonstrated is the power consumption profiler.  With battery life being a key factor with consumer consumption devices this is a welcome addition. He didn’t limit his presentation to VS2013 features though.  He showed how the Store has been redesigned to enable better search and discoverability of apps and how Win 8.1 can perform multiple screen scales depending on the resolution of the device automatically.  The last feature he demoed was the real time video streaming API which he made sure we understood by attaching a Surface to a little robot.  Oh, but there was one more thing.  Antoine and Julie announce that all attendees would also be getting Surface Pros.  BONUS! How much more could there be?  Gurdeep Singh Pall was about to pile on.  He introduced us to Bing as a platform (BaaP?).  He said if they (Microsoft) could do something with and API that is good 3rd party developers can do something that is dynamite and showed us some of the tools they had produced.  These included natural user interface improvements such as voice commands that looked to put Siri to shame.  Add to that 3D, OCR and translation capabilities and the future looks to be full of opportunities. Balmer then came out to show us one last thing.  Project Spark is a game design environment that will be available for Windows 8.1, XBox 360 and XBox One.  All I can say is that if my kids get their hands on this they are going to be able to learn some of what dad does in a much more enjoyable way.   For those of you who want to get most out of Oracle technologies to evolve your IT to the Next Wave, I encourage you to register to the up coming Oracle Optimized Datacenter event that will take place in Paris on November 28th. You will get the opportunity to exchange with Oracle experts and customers having successfully evolve their IT by leveraging Oracle technologies. You will also get the latest news on some of the Oracle systems announcements made during OOW 2012. During this event we will make an update about Oracle and Clouds, from private to public and hybrid models. So in preparing this session, I thought it was a good start to make a status of Cloud Computing in France, and CIO requirements in particular. Starting in 2009 with the first Cloud Camp in Paris, the market has evolved, but the basics are still the same : think hybrid. From Traditional IT to Clouds One size doesn't fit all, and for big companies having already an IT in place, there will be parts eligible to external (public) cloud, and parts that would be required to stay inside the firewalls, so ability to integrate both side is key.  None the less, one of the major impact of Cloud Computing trend on IT, reported by Forrester, is the pressure it makes on CIO to evolve towards the same model that end-users are now used to in their day to day life, where self-service and flexibility are paramount. This is what is driving IT to transform itself toward "a Global Service Provider", or for some as "IT "is" the Business" (see : Gartner Identifies Four Futures for IT and CIO), and for both models toward a Private Cloud Service Provider. In this journey, there is still a big difference between most of existing external Cloud and a firm IT : the number of applications that a CIO has to manage. Most cloud providers today are overly specialized, but at the end of the day, there are really few business processes that rely on only one application. So CIOs has to combine everything together external and internal. And for the internal parts that they will have to make them evolve to a Private Cloud, the scope can be very large. This will often require CIOs to evolve from their traditional approach to more disruptive ones, the time has come to introduce new standards and processes, if they want to succeed. So let's have a look at the different Cloud models, what type of users they are addressing, what value they bring and most importantly what needs to be done by the  Cloud Provider, and what is left over to the user. IaaS, PaaS, SaaS : what's provided and what needs to be done First of all the Cloud Provider will have to provide all the infrastructure needed to deliver the service. And the more value IT will want to provide, the more IT will have to deliver and integrate : from disks to applications. As we can see in the above picture, providing pure IaaS, left a lot to cover for the end-user, that’s why the end-user targeted by this Cloud Service is IT people. ContentPane is container that contain JLabel that has contents(text, button, radio etc...). I don't know this is correct T.T Why I ask this is I failed combine the contents. I can not make TextField and InternalFrame at a time. I want to know the concept. I hope you take my question right.

• .net Studio Local Database

  Hello everyone, i am designing a local database in .net with wpf as gui. I have added a new database, and added a new table. Through the TableAdapter i generated 2 statements ( 1 statement is a select stmt and 1 is a insert) , i insert name and firstname (id is auto generated). • "Genie" animation effect in XAML

  What would the XAML look like to create a Genie animation effect? Take an object of any size/shape, and "Genie" it to another Minimized location. Kind of like the OSX window minimize. Maybe even a little fancier through a smoke-like effect where the path is more switch back, instead of a simple funnel (if that makes any sense). I'm guessing that there is some sort of Path that could be drawn, and the shape could move and transform along that path. Just a wild guess. Thanks for your ideas.

• WPF WebBrowser, unable to run Javascript and applet in Popups windows

  Hello All, I have a desktop application that has a control with a WebBrowser control inside. Everything works fine except with Siebel CMR popups. When it opens a new popup , Siebel tries to load an applet in the popup window but it doesn't work , it works fine in the main browser. This works perfectly with IE also. It seems to be related to some security setting but i am quite lost. Does anyone know if there is any way to modify or check the security when a new popup is opened? Thanks in advance! Fede

• "a valid provisioning file for this executable was not found" in XCode

  I'm trying to submit my second app to the App Store. I've followed all the instructions to the best of my knowledge, but I keep getting this error when I try to build and run: "a valid provisioning file for this executable was not found" I'm letting XCode auto select the profile automatically. The one I'd like to select is greyed out. But the dropdown selection in the Build tab of the Target window says "profile doesn't match application identifier" The other thing I don't get about this is that the selection dropdown shows "com.mycompany.myapp" and then "ABCDEDFG.com.mycompany.myapp" (both of those made up) so that I see they don't match. I have the unique identifier profile installed in the Organizer and in plist file. I'm totally confused. I have followed the instructions in my book a few times and just can't get it.

• Problem with datagridvieew in vb.net

  I'm trying to add a datagridview in vb.net, but it does not allow me to change the connection string or the database that should be imported to connect to it. The only thing that I'm seeing is the previous ms sql database that I connected with datagridview and everytime I click the new connection, the window closes and it leaves me with the datagridview with the previous connection that I have. And its not applicable because, now I want to connect it with mysql. Not ms sql. Its some sort of a cache like feature in vb.net, how do I get rid of it. so that I can add the new connection for mysql? Do I need to reinstall visual studio 2008?

• LogCat acting patchy

  The LogCat output in eclipse suddenly started weird. It sometimes shows all the output as expected. Other times it just doesn't show anything - is completely blank. After some internet research, I thought Mylyn plugin might be responsible. So I tried de-selecting "Mylyn Tasks UI" & "Mylyn Team UI" on eclipse Window -- Preferences -- General -- Startup and Shutdown -- programs that are started at startup. No Luck. Has anyone else encountered & solved this problem?

• Having an online highscore leaderboard for a Flash game

  Why, hello there. I'm trying to develop a simple Flash game using Actionscript 2 (I know its a bit dated, but its a simple project that doesen't benefict much from AS3), and I came up with an ideia of implementing an online leaderboard that records and shows the highscore of the player. This isn't anything too complicated, but I seem to be having problem finding resources online that explain how I should implement this. All I want is a call, probably to a PHP/MySQL database that records the player's name (which will be recorded via a input window) and its current score. It would also have to show the best all time scores, by order. I should remind you that I am working on a Actionscript 2 so Actionscript 3 solutions are probably not going to work. Can anyone out there help me out here? Did any of you already been through this?
