• How to choose light version of databse system

  I am starting one POS (Point of sale) project. Targeting system is going to be written in C# .NET 2 WinForms and as main database server We are going to use MS-SQL Server. As we have a lot of POS devices in chain for one store I will love to have backend local data base system on each POS device. Scenario are following: When main server goes down!! POS application should continue working "off-line" with local database, until connection to main server come up again. Now I am in dilemma which local database is going to be most adoptable for me. Here is some notes for helping me point me in right direction: To be Light "My POS devices art usually old and suffering with performances" To be Free "I have a lot of devices and I do not wont additional cost beside main SQL serer" One day Ill love to try all that port on Mono and Linux OS. Here is what I've researched so far: Simple XML "Light but I am afraid of performance, My main table of items is average of 10K records" SQL-Expres "I am afraid that my POS devices is poor with hardware for SQLExpres, and also hard to install on each device and configure" Less known Advantage Database Server have free distribution of offline ADT system. DBF with extended Library,"Respect for good old DBFs but that era is behind Me with clipper and DBFs" MS Access Sqlite "Mostly like for now, but I am afraid how it is going to pair with MS SQL do they have same Data taypes". I know that in this SO is a lot of subjective data, but at least can someone recommended some others lite database system, or things that I shod most take attention before I choice database.

• slow SQL command

  I need to take some data from one table (and expand some XML on the way) and put it in another table. As the source table can have thousands or records which caused a timeout I decided to do it in batches of 100 records. The code is run on a schedule so doing it in batches works ok for the customer. If I have say 200 records in the source database the sproc runs very fast but if there are thousands it takes several minutes. I'm guessing that the "TOP 100" only takes the top 100 after it has gone through all the records. I need to change the whole code and sproc at some point as it doesn't scale but for now is there a quick fix to make this run quicker ? • Is there a Post-Build Extensible Installer System

  We have a product that we need to create an installer for. It has a number of components which can be installed or not as the situation demands. When we ship our installation package, we want to be able to have that include any number of additional components to be installed. For example, Foo Manager Pro contains: Foo Manager Console Foo Manager Database Foo Manager Services That might be shipped as something like: FooManagerInstaller.exe FMPConsole.pkg FMPDatabase.pkg FMPServices.pkg A package might consist of something like: Manifest Files to be deployed Additional scripts to be executed (eg find file foo.config, do some XML Manipulation) If a client wants to add custom skins and a series of plugins as part of the install, they create their own packages: FMPConsoleSkins.pkg ClientWebservices.pkg If that client then ships it to someone else who wants to add more customisation - they can do so in the same way. We can build this from scratch - but wanted to check if this sort of install system already exists. We already have a set of NAnt scripts which do something not too far from this. But they're difficult to maintain, and quite complex. They don't offer any of the 'niceties' that we'd expect from an installer (like tracking deployed files and removing them if the install fails). We've been looking a little bit at NSIS and building MSIs using WiX, but it's not clear that these can offer us the capability for downstream to provide additional packages, without inventing our own installer language.

• How can I add a portrait layout on top of a landscape Camera SurfaceView?

  I need a Camera SurfaceView for my application. The camera should be set to fixed landscape view which is done by setting android:screenOrientation="landscape" for the activity in the AndroidManifest.xml. After doing some experiments and Google researches trying to use setRotation(int) inside the camera preview implementation, I came to the conclusion, that it is obviously the common practice to get a preview with correct behaviour. Now the camera preview itself looks fine for landscape orientation. But I need to have an overlay that holds a bunch of buttons. Due to usability the user interface should be in portrait view (or even better orientation aware). There seemed no other option to me, but to fix the activity screenOrientation, so that the camera preview looks normal (in portrait mode the whole view is streched and rotated to the left) Is there a workaround to get my buttons back to portrait orientation? Or another overall approach to deal with the camera view? Parameters.setRotation(int) obvisouly didnt work. I am quite new to the Android plattform programming. Of course I dont know much about the programming tricks and workarounds yet. I did a lot of research over the last two weeks, but couldnt find the right solution so far.

  Please note that this Galileo is absolutely not related to Java. Galileo is basically a set of web services which can be used to book airline tickets. Originally, it was supposed to be used via Galileo Desktop, whereby operators would enter various commands to perform required operations. For example, SA*AZ610J20JULFCOJFK will "Display seat availability map for specified flight and class". Granted, humans can get used to it and be very efficient, but here comes a problem of integrating this with other systems. For that, folks at TravelPort basically slapped a SOAP interface to this system (which must have been written in COBOL or something), without even thinking about actually embracing XML. For example, it can contain <Ind1>N</Ind1> <Ind2>N</Ind2> <Ind3>N</Ind3> ... <Ind72>N</Ind72> <!-- Yes! 72! --> or, better yet <Text>P/RU/4xxx24528/RU/11MAY67/M/23DEC12/AxxxxxxV/MxxxM</Text> In light of this, my question is as follows: are there any sane airline tickets booking systems we can integrate with? Or are there companies which have products that can abstract away all this?

  I have a console application that require to use some code that need administrator level. How can I solve this issue? Update I am able to make it work if I run the solution in Administrator or when I run the /bin/*.exe in Administrator. I am still wondering if it's possible to have something that will pop when the application start instead of explicitly right clickRun as Administrator?

• navigateToURL with GET parameters in local SWF

  I'm running a Flex application locally (local-with-filesystem or local-trusted), and I'm trying to call navigateToURL to a local page using GET parameters. Flash Player seems to be ignoring the parameters when opening the local page, though. I've been scouring the Flash security pages to find a documented prohibition for this, but haven't found anything. Pointers? How would you work around this issue? • Re-tweets and replies with JTwitter

  I have not used Twitter enough to become familiar with its terminology or the way it works, so please help me in understanding the problem I have at hand. I am getting last 20 status updates posted by some Twitter user via RSS feed, the feed XML is parsed and the statuses are displayed in a ListView. Which means that I have the original tweet in a String variable(row of ListView). When I click a ListView item, I get the option of "Re-tweeting" and "post reply". As, I understand it, when re-tweeting I will have to just update my *status* as: RT @orig-poster <original tweet> and when posting a reply I will have to just update my status as: @orig-poster <my tweet> I skimmed through the JavaDocs of the Jwitter library(Twitter class) and found a setStatus(String) method. I dont think I will have to make use of retweet() or reply() functions of the Twitter class in JTwitter library. Is my understanding correct? Please correct me if I am wrong here or missing anything. • How to parse rss from a php page, using jQuery/jFeed?

  I'm trying to fumble my way through parsing rss sensibly, using jQuery and jFeed. Because of the same origin policy I'm pulling the BBC's health news feed into a local page (http://www.davidrhysthomas.co.uk/play/proxy.php). Originally this was just the same proxy.php script as available in the jFeed download package, but due to my host's disabling allow_url_fopen() I've amended the php to the following: $url = "http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/health/rss.xml"; $ch = curl_init(); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $url); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_HEADER, 0); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); $data = curl_exec($ch); echo "$data"; curl_close($ch); Which seems to generate the same/comparable contents as the original fopen on my local machine. Now that seems to be working, I'm looking at setting the jFeed script up to work with the page and, to my embarrassment, don't see how. I understand that, at the least, this should work: jQuery.getFeed({ url: 'http://www.davidrhysthomas.co.uk/play/proxy.php', success: function(feed) { alert(feed.title); } }); ...but, as I'm sure you anticipate, it doesn't. • Issues Deploying ROOT Context in Tomcat6

  I'm working on getting an application deployed to the ROOT ("/") context in my Tomcat 6 instance. Here's what has been done: Defined another virtual host (domain.com) Created the respective folder (/etc/tomcat6/Catalina/domain.com) Set it to auto deploy WAR's Set appBase to CATALINA_BASE/domainapps and created respective folder Copied manager.xml from localhost to domain.com. Now I'm trying to deploy into the ROOT context by uploading a ROOT.war to CATALINA_BASE/domainapps. This isn't working. I don't get any exceptions thrown, but the stock ROOT page ("It works !") stays up. I have successfully deployed it into another context (by uploading domainapp.war and viewing at /domainapp), but not ROOT. Re-reading the Virtual Host setup it makes reference to CATALINA_HOME and CATALINA_BASE. My CATALINA_HOME is at /usr/share/tomcat6/domainapp while CATALINA_BASE is /var/lib/tomcat6. Which should I be using for what? Currently haven't touched CATALINA_HOME but will try messing with a few things there. A better question might be what is the generally accepted flow taken to setup a new Tomcat instance and deploy an application to the root context.

  This question made me question a practice I had been following for years. For thread-safe initialization of function-local static const objects I protect the actual construction of the object, but not the initialization of the function-local reference referring to it. Something like this: namspace { const some_type& create_const_thingy() { lock my_lock(some_mutex); static const some_type the_const_thingy; return the_const_thingy; } } void use_const_thingy() { static const some_type& the_const_thingy = create_const_thingy(); // use the_const_thingy } The idea is that locking takes time, and if the reference is overwritten by several threads, it won't matter. I'd be interested if this is safe enough in practice? safe according to The Rules? (I know, the current standard doesn't even know what "concurrency" is, but what about trampling over an already initialized reference? And do other standards, like POSIX, have something to say that's relevant to this?) For the inquiring minds: Many such function-local static const objects I used are maps which are initialized from const arrays upon first use and used for lookup. For example, I have a few XML parsers where tag name strings are mapped to enum values, so I could later switch over the tags enum values.

• iPhone: Creating a hierarchy-based table navigation.

  Hi there, I've tried to ask this before, but nothing got answered. Basically, I would like someone to explain to me how to create a table, which when a cell is tapped, pushes the user to the next view for that cell. I have this so far: Click here to view what I have. I would further like to, say when CSS is tapped, it goes to a new view which has another table in it. This table would then take the user to a detail view, which is scrollable and you can switch pages through it. I would appreciate longer, more structured tutorials on how to do each and every bit to get it to work. Here's my array in my implementation file: - (void)viewDidLoad { arryClientSide = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"CSS", @"HTML", @"JavaScript", @"XML", nil]; arryServerSide = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"Apache", @"PHP", @"SQL", nil]; self.title = @"Select a Language"; [super viewDidLoad]; } and my .h: @interface RootViewController : UITableViewController <UITableViewDelegate, UITableViewDataSource> { IBOutlet UITableView *tblSimpleTable; NSArray *arryClientSide; NSArray *arryServerSide; } My current code crashes the script, and this error is returned in the console: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: '-[UITableViewController loadView] loaded the "NextView" nib but didn't get a UITableView.' How can I make sure the file persists even after closure of the app? Update: I have changed MODE_PRIVATE to MODE_APPEND but the problem still remains.

• Learning Clojure - What should I know about Java and more.

  Hello, I have started learning Clojure recently, my main programming language is Ruby and I have no Java experience whatsoever. Which Java standard classes are a must to know when working with Clojure? Obviously Clojure doesn't come with a wrapper for everything and a lot of functionality is provided by Java's libraries. There's like a gazillion of them on javadocs - which ones should I explore? Where do I look for and how do I install third party libraries? In Ruby I'd visit Rubyforge or Rubytoolbox and then just gem install the package I found interesting. Which editor/ide for Clojure would you recommend (with the lowest learning curve)? I am trying to use Netbeans with Enclojure and paradoxally it's my biggest obstacle so far: Each generated project has some xml files, folders, library dependencies etc. the purpose of I have no clue. I am doing some labrepl exercises and wanted to try out some of the bundled libraries separately in a new project, but this simple task I cannot accomplish :/ Are there any clojure community driven blogs with news, code tips etc?

  I have been following the usage of JavaScript for the past few years, and with the release of extremely fast scripting engines (V8, SquirrelFish Extrene, TraceMonkey, etc.) the possibilities of JavaScript have increased dramatically. However, the usage share of Internet Explorer coupled with it's total lack of support for recent standards makes me want to drop a bomb on Microsoft's HQ, as it creates a huge amount of problems for any website. The game will need to be pretty dynamic client-side, with animations and other eye-candy things, but not a full-blown game like those that run directly in the OS using DirectX or OpenGL. However, this might be a little stretch for JavaScript and will certainly feel extremely slow in Internet Explorer (given that the current IE engine can be hundreds of times slower than SFX; gotta see what IE9 will bring), would it be better to just do the whole thing in Flash? I know this means requiring the plug-in AND I have no experience whatsoever with Flash (other than browsing YouTube :P). It also means I can't just output directly from PHP, I would have to use XML or some other format to pass data to it (JSON is directly integrated in JS and PHP can deal with it easily). Another idea would be to provide an alternative interface just for IE, though I don't know how (ActiveX maybe? or with Flash, then why not just provide it to all browsers) or totally not supporting it and requiring the use of other browsers, although this is plain stupid from a business perspective. So here am I, wondering what approach to take and thus asking for your advice. How should I build the client-side? AJAX in all browsers, Flash in all browsers or a mix (AJAX for "modern" browsers and something else for the "grandpa": IE).

• Java: Efficiency of the readLine method of the BufferedReader and possible alternatives

  We are working to reduce the latency and increase the performance of a process written in Java that consumes data (xml strings) from a socket via the readLine() method of the BufferedReader class. The data is delimited by the end of line separater (\n), and each line can be of a variable length (6KBits - 32KBits). Our code looks like: Socket sock = connection; InputStream in = sock.getInputStream(); BufferedReader inputReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in)); ... do { String input = inputReader.readLine(); // Executor call to parse the input thread in a seperate thread }while(true) So I have a couple of questions: Will the inputReader.readLine() method return as soon as it hits the \n character or will it wait till the buffer is full? Is there a faster of picking up data from the socket than using a BufferedReader? What happens when the size of the input string is smaller than the size of the Socket's receive buffer? What happens when the size of the input string is bigger than the size of the Socket's receive buffer? I am getting to grips (slowly) with Java's IO libraries, so any pointers are much appreciated. • Resetting a PChar variable

  Hi, I don't know much about delphi win 32 programming, but I hope someone can answer my question. I get duplicate l_sGetUniqueIdBuffer saved into the database which I want to avoid. The l_sGetUniqueIdBuffer is actually different ( the value of l_sAuthorisationContent is xml, and I can see a different value generated by the call to getUniqueId) between rows. This problem is intermittant ( duplicates are rare...) There is only milliseconds difference between the update date between the rows. • Can I return JSON from an .asmx Web Service if the ContentType is not JSON?

  I would like to post a form using ajax and jquery to a .asmx webservice and return the value from the webservice as JSON. I'm using ASP.NET 4.0. I know that in order to return JSON from a webservice the following needs to be set (1) dataType: "json" (2) contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", (3) type: "POST" (4) set the Data to something. I have tested this and it works fine (i.e. my webservice returns the data as JSON) if all *four are set*. But, lets say in my case I want to do a standard form post i.e. test1=value1&test2=value2 so the contentType is not JSON but I want back JSON {test1:value1}. This doesn't seem to work because the contentType is "application/x-www-form-urlencoded" not "application/json; charset=utf-8". Can anyone tell me why I can't do this? It seems crazy to me that you have to explicitly send JSON to get JSON back, yet if you don't use JSON (i.e. post urlencoded contenttype) then the webservice will return XML. Any insights are greatly appreciated :)
