• Very frequent "Server not found" messages

  Recently, while browsing and clicking or typing an address, I get: "Server not found", "Connection was reset", or a half-loaded page. Usually the page loads instantly after clicking reload, but this means I must reload on every page. Images on one site, but stored at a different server don't load until reloading for a second time. Clicking "submit" on many sites frequently doesn't work unless I reload many times. Sometimes sites load, but without colors and formating, appearing as if they would in Lynx. This seems to happen with every Web site. My Internet service claims everything on their end is fine. This happened a day after running an update in aptitude. I have not updated any hardware. I have tried clearing Iceweasel's cache. I do not have any router or other equipment. What could be going on? How can I troubleshoot this? PPPoE connection, Iceweasel 3.5.16, Debian 6

• Sharing files between multiple computers?

  At my school, we have 13 iMacs that we use to make our yearbook. Currently our school has some servers for us, but since we work with so many files ( thousands of pictures, most of which are ~3MB ) it slows down far too much. Is there a way to better share files between our computers? We are on a wireless network and the whole school shares the same servers, we have around probably 400 computers in the school. Is there a hardware fix I can do? Something like buying an external and hooking only yearbook computers to it?

  when the traffic for a website grows i dont think one apache server in a vps is the way to go. i would like to know more about how i then should set up the server side architecture. im not that much into hardware stuff (what kind of cables to use, different cpu architectures etc), but interested in the software architecture: what servers (apache, nginx, squid, varnish etc) to use and how they interact with each other one server in one machine? how many mysql servers. how many apache, nginx servers and so on. how the "machine court" looks like. are there any good books about this area?

• Raspberry Pi based Hadoop cluster

  Is it at least possible to build Hadoop cluster from Raspberry Pi-based nodes? Can such a cluster meet hardware requirements of Hadoop? And if so, how much Raspberry Pi nodes are required to meet requirements? I understand that a cluster from several Raspberry Pi nodes being cheap is not powerful. My purpose is to organize cluster without possibility of loosing personal data from my desktop or notebook, and to use this cluster studying Hadoop. I'd appreciate if you suggest any better ideas of organizing a cheap Hadoop cluster for studying purposes. UPD: I've seen that recommended amount of memory for Hadoop is 16-24GB, multi-core processors, and 1TB of HDD, but it doesn't look like minimal requirements.

• Hylafax with serial over IP modem

  I'm looking into virtualizing a Hylafax server which currently runs on a dedicated hardware running CentOS with a Divalogic card. The main issue obviously is, how to connect the modem to the VM. There are serial over IP devices available at digi.com. Maybe there are others? Regarding digi.com devices, as far as I understood one can install the RealPort software and then have a /dev/ttySx device presented to the Linux server. This device then can be used as serial connection to the modem. Does someone have such a configuration in place? Or does someone have another idea to virtualize a Hylafax server (outbound faxes only). Thank you in advance

• Is there a way to undo deletion of registry keys while the machine is still running?

  [ also posted from a programmer's POV at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3299230 ] I messed up big time and deleted a large portion of my registry during a programming experiment: As a result most of the contents of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ are gone. I haven't logged off or shutdown since this happened. The applications that were already running seem to be coping fine so far but I suspect that after the next reboot there won't be much happiness left... Also, System Restore tells me there are no restore points even though I'm pretty sure there should have been. Could this be another symptom of the purged registry? I wouldn't have expected this information to be stored under HKCU, though... Does anybody know of a technique or utility that can possibly restore some or all of the deleted entries? I'm on Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit. I'm not really holding my breath but you can always hope, can't you?

• Can I reprogram a microphone input to be used as an audio output? (on XP)

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists. • Audio Line-In on Ubuntu/Linux Mint

  I'm currently on Windows, and want to switch to Linux, but some hardware issues are preventing me. Mainly, I have a sound card that supports Line-In. On Windows, anything I plug into the line-in gets outputted to the speakers. However, when I installed Linux, because there is not a control application that comes with the driver, I have no idea how to set this up. I tried going to the sound settings and it doesn't seem to be there. I also want to configure it for 2.1 sound, and do not know how to do that... Anyone here done it before?   Hello. I've just bought new Eee PC 1005 (with Atom N450, 250GB and 2GB memory) without any pre-installed system. Now I'd like to install windows and linux distribution on in. What should I choose ? I am a programmer and web designer, so I need Java IDE , Python interpreters, and Photoshop (on windows). Will Win 7 Pro 32bit work ?Or should I choose Windows XP ? And what about linux distro ? Ubuntu, Eeebuntu, Ubuntu netbook edition ? btw is it true that linux's grub overrides mbr so that hardware system restore doesn't work ?

• Ubuntu Wired network(ethernet does not work)

  It was working just fine, until the other day I yanked it out. The wireless works just fine on the same router. If I login to a windows 7 instance on this dual boot laptop then the ehternet works just fine. So it's not a hardware, cable or router issue. The card even gets an ip, but I can't connect to the internet. Here are the details from route, iptables, ifconfig, ping etc. Any ideas? • Software RAID underneath ESXi datastore

  I'm building an virtual environment for a small business. It is based around a single ESXi 5.1 host, which will host half a dozen or so VMs. I'm having some doubts regarding how to implement the storage though. I naturally want the datastore to be fault tolerant, but I can't get the funds for a separate storage machine, nor expensive hardware RAID solutions, so I would like to use some software RAID (lvm/mdadm, most likely). How can this be implemented? My only idea so far would be to create a VM which has the storage adapter as passthrough, puts some software RAID on top of the disks and then presents the resulting volumes "back" to the ESXi host which then creates a datastore from which other VMs get their storage presented. This does seem kind of round-about, do I have any better options? From my research, passthrough seems to come with quite a few drawbacks, such as no suspend/resume etc.

• How can I re-create Microsoft Cluster Service resource groups on a different cluster?

  I use Microsoft Cluster Service on a cluster of Windows Server 2003 machines containing several dozen resource groups. In the process of migrating to newer hardware, I would like move resources to the new machines on resource group at a time spread out over a few days to ease the migration and minimize risk. I was wondering of there was a smarter way to do this than manually re-creating resources on the new and then deleting them on the old cluster? The cluster has already been set up properly, the only missing is the resource groups and the resources they contain (IP, network names, services...). I have looked through the options of the cluster admin GUI and cluster.exe's commandline options, but haven't found anything like an import/export feature to copy over the configuration of a resource or entire resource group. Does something like this exist?

  I have a Lenny dedicated server at Hivelocity. My server went down today. They doesn't know why. I don't know why. MTRG shows 7Mbps before went the server goes offline, ddos not probably. Hardware failure? maybe. but now is running ok. hacked? maybe. lastlog, md5sum, rkhunter, syslog and auth.log seems ok. my load is always between 0.02 and 0.3, the server runs a small website but with 2million pageviews/day and never failed before. Where can I find more information in my logs? where I start looking?

  Hi, I m a newbie to kernel programming. I am trying to boot the kernel 2.6.36 on my ECG machine.It was working perfectly on 2.6.33.2. • Can I run Ubuntu directly under Windows 8?

Since Hyper-V is a Type-0 hipervisor, may I know does this bring the same benefit if I have Ubuntu Linux install as a virtual guess OS? Meaning, if I turning the Ubuntu on (the guess OS), does the Ubuntu still able to access the hardware information like nVidia display card or processor information? I'm just curious to know can this be done?

The future provider will be responsible of to secure, update and create the virtual machines (outsourcing) and with a RedHat OS's. So i want that you help me to choose a virtualisation technologie (for the i prefer KVM of Redhat RHEV, VMWare is expensive), how evaluate the hardware needs (this for evolution of 4 or 5 years) and to elaborate a good planing to don't forget any think. I'd like to find a solution which: uses minimal power. allows me to access as much disk bandwidth as possible. provides glitch-free file access to both MacOS and Windows. is as cheap as possible, while remaining reliable. Optional, but desirable extras: software or hardware RAID; open source solutions. A SheevaPlug with eSATA seems one possibility, but I'm sure there are any number of other good options.

• Windows XP crashes by GT610 driver (nv4_disp)

  I have a PC which was working fine but one day screen went dark and nothing was shown. I thought the problem is graphic card, so I replaced it with new one. I bought a new graphic card (GeForce 610) and installed it on my system. I formatted my hard-drive and installed a fresh Windows XpSp3 and its drivers. Everything was fine but after installing graphic card's driver, I got an error saying windows got stuck in an infinite loop and it couldn't get out (in nv4_disp). I uninstalled it and downloaded its last version and installed it. Unfortunately, I got the same error and windows restated! Here's my system: Pascal Motherboard PT880PRO Intel CPU Windows XPSp3 I searched this issue on the internet and I found bunch of suggestions (from cleaning hardware to installing latest version of its driver) but nothing help! • Windows 8 switch user is very slow

  I recently upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7. One major annoyance is how slow the "switch user" command is. In Windows 7 switching users was fairly fast. I've got an SSD drive with pretty good hardware, so I'm suspecting it's something with Windows 8, either a defect, or the fact that I upgraded from Windows 7 instead of doing a clean install. Anybody have this problem? My wife is complaining enough about Windows 8 and this is one of the biggest complaints.

• Switch to switch encryption over a wireless bridge (TrustSec?)

  I am planning to connect an existing Cisco 3750 switch to a 3560C switch over a wireless PTP bridge. The bridge will be WPA2 protected, but I am looking for an additional measure of security between the switches to prevent other wireless access through either switch. They do not support IPSec, only 802.1Q tunnels, and buying additional hardware is not likely an option. I am looking into using TrustSec manual mode between the switches. After some effort reading into TrustSec and MACsec, I am mostly certain this is a good choice over the wireless bridge, keeping in mind it is a shared medium. Two questions: Can I reliably prevent other wireless traffic from accessing the switches using TrustSec? Does anyone know of any better options with the 3000 series switches?

  Hello, We are developing a web application that will deal with highly sensitive (financial) data of clients (audience is medium to large sized businesses). Clients will be under scrutiny from regulators & auditors and, as such, we will be too. More importantly to give clients a level of comfort our application and related hosting arrangement should instill a lot of confidence with them. We are looking into using a cloud based service like Linode, Amazon EC2, etc. To allow for maximum flexibility We are keen on putting everything on virtual servers and avoiding having to buy our own hardware. Does a cloud based service make sense for our particular scenario? If not what type of hosting should we consider? If so what should we look out for? Thanks!

• Blurred refurbished TFT

  I got 3 refurbished PC+TFT 19". All TFT shows a very blurry image. I estimate the TFT's are 2-3 yrs old. The PC's running Windows7 Pro. The resolution is set to the TFT native values. It could be possible that all TFT's are broken but I have similiar models that are up to 5 yrs old, without any issue. I still think it could be a config issue but from the hardware it is possible that a TFT get broken I shows up a very blurry image. Update TFT HP 2035, grafic Intel Q35/GMA 3100, analog D-SUB connector, Manuf. date Sep 2005. Config. resolution 1600x1200, PPP 150% Without ClearType it is worst. Desktop Icon titles seems to be good and clear. But in Notepad for example the effect is that on the right of the characters is a pinky shadow.

  What are some good books or resources for learning automate virtual PCs on Windows DataCenter? I want to be able to build VPCs with both automated installs and from images, preferably via powershell. I would like to be able to setup an IIS environment for automated testing, and configure end user installs of different versions of Windows. I am not interested in corpnet type scenarios (active directory, domains, etc) so much for now. I'm comfortable with powershell and programming in general. I haven't yet installed Windows DataCenter, maybe once I install it will be clear enough. But looking for resources on how to managed virtual PCs programmatically I haven't found anything.

• How can I upgrade from Windows 8 x32 to x64 fastest & easiest?

  I was upgrading the hardware in a family member's computer and purchased the Windows 8 upgrade for $40 from their website. Not thinking, after I installed it I realized I now have 32bit Windows on this 64bit capable machine. Did some research and it appears that the upgrade assistant just gives you whatever architecture you were uprgading from (windows 7 32bit). Question is, what is my best option here? I have already purchased a key, will this work on x64? I'm considering installing Windows 8 Preview x64 and upgrading from there, but not sure if that will work or if it will make me purchase it again.
