• How to add nvidia drivers after previous failure with linux mint?

  Before today, I had perfectly good drivers from nvidia for my linux mint (15) box. I decided to update it because my performance in TF2 is less than stellar, and then things went south. I used synaptic to install nvidia-331 and then rebooted, but when I selected Mint in GRUB I waited...and waited...and waited. Nothing happened, but the display stayed on (a completely black video was being output). So I went into recovery mode from GRUB, went to root access, and apt-get remove --purge nvidia*'d my way out of that mess, and installed nvidia-common. Now my performance in graphic intensive stuff (read: games, blender) sucks, so I've been through the same thing a few times trying to re-install nvidia-current. I just want to get it back how it was. • SQL Import to update existing records?

  I've got a table in a database that contains costs for items that gets updated monthly. To update these costs, we have someone export the table, do some magic in excel, and then import the table back to the database. We're running MSSQL 2005 and using the built in SQL Management Studio. The problem is that when importing back into the table, we have to delete all the records before we import or else we'll get errors. The ideal situation would be for the import to recognize the primary keys and then update the records instead of trying to create a second record with a duplicate key- halting the import. Is something like this possible with the built in tools or do we have to get third party software to make it happen?

• Wiping out user and/or root password in embedded linux

  We have a security camera system running an embedded linux. It boots with Lilo as a bootloader and has no tty access once booted. I don't know any username either. SSH/22 is open, but I don't think brute force is an option. I have tried all the common tricks to reset a linux user password (boot from the bootloader in single user mode = doesn't happen, still prompts for user login, boot to a live cd = can't access the file system...it's all loop files and other binary, etc etc), but they are all not possible as it is an embedded linux setup the way it is. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

• Scripting a database copy from MS Sql 2005 to 2008 without detach/backup/RDP

  My goal is to move a single SQL 2005 database to a seperate 2008 server. The issue is my level of access to both servers. On each I can only access the database and nothing else. I cant create a backup file or detach the database because I don't have access to the file system or to create a proxy. I've tried using the generate script function of sql 2005 management studio express to restore the schema but receive command not supported errors when attempting to execute the sql on the new database. Similarly I tried using EMS SQL Manager 2005 Lite to script a backup of the schema and data but ran into similar problems. How do I go about acomplishing this? I can't seem to find any solutions outside of using the detach and backup functions.

• ffmpeg open webcam using YUYV but i want MJPEG

  I need ffmpeg to open webcam (logitech c910) in MJPEG mode, because the webcam can give ~24 using MJPEG "protocol" and only ~10 fps using the YUYV. Another codecs (mjpeg, mpeg4) works well with webcam... But this is another story.

• Any way to stop VMWare workstation from dropping SSH connections?

  I have VMWare workstation 8 with a few Linux guests. I have had problems maintaining an active SSH connection to my VMs when they are in bridged mode. I first read that the onboard realtek network cards were not well supported so I bought a Intel Pro/1000 GT card. This supposedly had support. But this made no difference. Connections via SSH are active for about the first 3 minutes then hang and die. I have changed the TCP Checksum offload on the Intel and Realtek NICs, but this only works some of the time and even then not for very long. The best I could do was about 20 minutes before the connection was dropped. Any ideas?

• Perl script and out of memory errors

  We have a midsized server with 48GB of RAM and are attempting to import a list of around 100,000 opt-in email subscribers to a new list management system written in Perl. From my understanding, Perl doesn't have imposed memory limits like PHP, and yet we are continuously getting internal server errors when attempting to do the import. When investigating the error logs, we see that the script ran out of memory. Since perl doesn't have a setting to limit the memory usage (as far as I can tell) why are we getting these errors? I doubt a small import like this is consuming 48GB of ram. We have compromised and split the list into chunks of 10,000, but would like to figure out the root cause for future fixes. This is a CentOS machine with Litespeed as the web server.

• SQL 2008 Mirroring, how to failover from the mirror database?

  I have configured a database mirroring setup in SQL 2008 using the High-safety, Synchronous mode, without automatic failover. I don't have a Witness instance. Regarding high availability, I understand Mirroring is a better strategy than Log Shipping (faster and smoother failover), and cheaper than Clustering (because of license and hardware costs). According to the MS docs, to do the failover you need to access to the Principal database and in the "Mirror" options click the "Failover" button. But I want to do this from the Mirror database, because what would be the benefit as all this setup is being done in case the Principal server knocks down? Evidently I am missing something. If Mirroring is not a solution for server downtime (as would be Clustering, if I understand correctly), then which practical (i.e. real world examples) cases would benefit from Mirroring for high-availability purposes?   I work in the IT department of a training center, we still offer XP and Office 2003 trainings but also offer Vista and Win7 and Office 2007. Currently, we use VMs on VMware Server but this is obviously not a superb choice. We're thinking of implementing something like VDI (brainstorm phase, we hardly have any details) but I decided to check here if people would have some clever alternatives. Requirements: * Flexible when it comes to deployment * Centralized management would be a big plus * Allow for different software, whether they be compatible or not (all of office except for outlook can be installed simultaneously. for outlook you need to choose between 2003 or 2007) * Allow for different OS We have a big enough budget to implement a proper SAN environment to accomodate the virtualization of the solution, whatever kind it may be. A support contract will probably be necessary as well, because we need to be able to offer quick solutions to problems and with only 2 sysadmins that is simply impossible to guarantee.

• Windows XP SP3 install keeps rebooting

  The base fonts on my Windows XP Pro were corrupted. A suggested fix was to "install" XP again, essentially just to overwrite the WINNT folder hence resetting all the fonts. I downloaded the XP Pro SP3 installer from our corporate MSDN account, ran it straight from the HDD and at the very end it crashed and rebooted. Now it just keeps rebooting over and over after saying "Continuing installation...." I can't boot in Safe Mode, I can't get to a command prompt or anything. I'm out of ideas. Formatting the drive and performing a fresh install is NOT an option.

• Windows 8.1 clean install keeps failing with Oxc0000005 error

  I'm encountering the error Oxc0000005 when making a clean install of Windows 8.1 x64 on a Samsung 840 SSD. I don't know where the error is coming from, I'v already tested several solutions/workarounds I found online and nothing seems to work. The SSD is healthy, I can install Linux (Ubuntu) on it, but apparently the Windows install reports the drive as "locked" when trying to "refresh" the install. According to diskpart, however, the SSD is not in read-only mode, so I don't understand what is going on. I had Windows 8 installed before formatting the drive.

• Unable to log into Ubuntu

  I have Ubuntu 12.04.1. Last time I did nothing especial, but suddenly some problem appear: I have a login screen (using lightdm), when I attempt a login, I get a console session and returned to the login screen. I see that it is a known issue, so I tried everything from following steps: To removed .XAuthority Configure to use gdm Reinstall lightdm To include my user to nopasswdlogin group But nothing help... • Centos and dell PowerEdge Rxxx Series.

  hi we lately purchase few dell servers all of them from Rxxx series couple of R410 and R710 the OS we used on those servers is: CentOS 5.4 we're getting very weird error messages and we lost network connectivity couple of times (restarting the network interface was needed to fix it) the messages we're getting are: Message from syslogd@ at Wed Nov 18 12:07:08 2009 ... servername kernel: Uhhuh. • Virtual Box fails my OSes :(

  I have a little problem with Virtual Box latest version in which i have installed Mint (also latest version).During creation of a new vdi partition I chose settings as default, that is, I don't create any tiny partitions myself. The installation works. But later while the new OS is running (not in Live mode) I try installing/updating new software available, the system automatically fails, it reports an error of DISKFULL, I close the message box then power off my system. Later on I can't boot it up again anymore. It hangs with a black screen and the PAUSE status. I have no idea why. I have installed 2 OSes and both fail at the same error. I doubt something is not right about the current version of VBox. Thank you . My host OS is Windows7 and my Clients are Mint and CentOS

• Plugging GlusterFS and Openfiler together

  Has anyone had experience plugging GlusterFS and Openfiler together or something similar? Here is the motivation: Disk space on multiple server regrouped using GlusterFS Centralized access using LDAP/AD and quota management using Openfiler as the GlusterFS client SMB/CIFS server for easy sharing to multiple users on Mac and Windows I know I can have Gluster installed on Openfiler (rPath Linux) successfully but Openfiler seems to be very picky on what it can use as a shared drive. Mounting the Gluster volume inside an existing share does not seem to allow quotas with the mounted folder free space. If this is not possible, is there any alternative to give the same capabilities?

• Exchange 2003 Sending Double E-mails?

  Hello there, We have an exchange 2003 single-machine setup that is behaving very oddly. For various users it sends the same e-mail twice (I've checked the logs and each e-mail has a unique mail identifier which confirms that the problem is not the same e-mail being received twice, but it being sent twice) I've done a quick search and found tons of information regarding POP3/IMAP connectors etc, however these Employes are using Outlook 2003/2007 in Cached Mode. The Symantec AntiVirus for Mail is also not causing the issue, it's correctly scanning both e-mails coming through. Any ideas?

• securing source code with bitlocker

  We need to deploy a web based application at a client site where it will be within their local intranet. Part of our requirement is to provide some basic security to protect our IP. I realise that nothings a 100% guaranteed fix but we are just looking to make it a bit harder for most people. The server will be running server 2008 and I was considering using bitlocker as a cheap and nasty way to protect it. From what I understand assuming the mobo supports it we can use the Transparent bitlocker mode and this means that moving the hdd to another pc will mean the hdd will be unreadable in that machine baring some sort of cold boot attack to steal the encryption keys. Is this assumption correct and in the case that the motherboard or any other component fails in the pc and we need to replace it do we lose access to our data or is there a way to unencrypt it (obviously accessible to only our company) EDIT: we do have legal documents that cover this and we will be locking the pc physically and the client will not have access to the pc (windows login) other than via the website we host on it

• Getting FC11 to run under VMware Server, converted from physical machine

  I have a FC11 installation that I have converted to a VMware disk image to run om my VMware Server. I converted it with qemu-img, as the VMware Converter software apparently only converts Linux hosts to VMware Infrastructure servers. The disk image boots fine (grub is loaded and boots the kernel) but it seems like the disk is not found by the kernel, and the boot process stalls. Hotplugging USB devices work (the kernel prints debug information) and I'm able to press keys (Ctrl-Alt-Delete for instance). The VMware guest OS is set to RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 (32 bit), and I have tried both the LSI Logic, LSI Logic SAS and VMware Accelerated SCSI SCSI controllers, to no avail. I'm able to boot an installer disk and get into rescue mode and mount the filesystem, so my question is, what do I need to do to the guest kernel / initrd image to make it recognize the virtual disk?

• Linux Mint does not start after renaming home directory

  I am new to linux and was just trying to rename the only directory in home from rk to rhk. I messed up the whole thing and the settings. Created some new thing named rhk which I can't remember as it got all messed up and Now I am getting nothing after Linux Mint 10(julia) boots up - no start menu, no panel, no taskbar nothing. I tried to work in the recovery mode and got some(downloaded) 216mb of something(in the repair broken packages) hoping that it might help but didn't help. Moreover whenver I have booted in it shows messages like Could not update ICEauthority file /home/rk./.ICEauthority there is a problem with the configuration server. (usr/lib/libconfig24/gconfsanitycheck2 exited with status 256) The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID: GNOME_mintMenu" The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID: GNOME_IndicatorApplet" Naulitis could not create the following reqiured folders: /home/rk/Desktop, /home/rk/. Naulitis Moreover Alt+F2 gives Run application or run with file and nothing seems to be working.

• Remote desktop use two out of four monitors

  I've recently upgraded my home workstation and now have four monitors on it. I work remotely most of the time and need some way to get remote desktop onto only two of those four monitors. The top two monitors (monitors 4 & 3, going from left to right) each have a maximum resolution of 1680x1050. The bottom two monitors (1 & 2) each have a maximum resolution of 1920x1080. In my .rpd file for this remote desktop connection, I have the following keys (I've clipped it for brevity) screen mode id:i:2 use multimon:i:1 desktopwidth:i:1920 desktopheight:i:2130 session bpp:i:32 winposstr:s:0,1,3,75,1655,675 Previously I was able to get away with just doing "mstsc /span" when I had only two monitors, but that isn't working now (and isn't desirable). I'd like for the new setup to only use two of my monitors. I don't really care which two. How do I alter the .rdp file to accomplish this?

• How to use new disk space after extend attached SAN disk

  I have extended the space of my SAN vDisk from 1TB to 1.2TB, but Windows Explorer doesn't show the new size. After resize the vdisk in the SAN Manager, the Disk Management utility shows the 200GB unallocated space, then I resized the partition to use the unallocated space to get a 1.2TB partition, the process was succesfully, but in the Windows File Explorer the disk still have 1TB of total space. Win version: Windows Storage Server Enterprise 2007. Do I need to restart the server? How can I use the new extra space without rebooting?

• Why do my numbered headings break when I apply a watermark?

  I have an MS Word 2010 document. I am editing it in compatibility mode. I have heading 1s as a numbered list. When I apply a watermark to the document the headings break. The number and background shading remain correct, but the text "collapses" - so the word "Introduction" appears one letter wide with all letters drawn one on top of the other (you can open Font properties for the headings and see the entire word in the preview; font spacing shows as normal). Why does this happen? Windows 7, SP1. Opening doc over network from Sharepoint.

• Possible to get SSD TRIM (discard) working on ext4 + LVM + software RAID in Linux?

  We use RAID1+0 with md on Linux (currently 2.6.37) to create an md device, then use LVM to provide volume management on top of the device, and then use ext4 as our filesystem on the LVM volume groups. With SSDs as the drives, we'd like to see the TRIM commands propagate through the layers (ext4 - LVM - md - SSD) to the devices. It looks like recent 2.6.3x kernels have had a lot of new SSD-related TRIM support added, including lots more coverage of Device Mapper scenarios, but we still can't seem to get it to cascade down properly. Is this possible yet? If so, how? If not, is any progress being made?

• A PDF viewer for large margins in fullscreen

  I am looking for a way to pleasantly read PDF files on my widescreen (22" 1680x1050) monitor. My problem with all pdf the PDF-viewer applications I have tried is that they do not handle wide and high margins well. If I go to fullscreen mode in my viewer and zoom in so that the extra margins are cropped, I can view the pages nicely, the annoyance however is that I have to reposition the pages every time I navigate to another page. I am sure there must be a way to make a PDF viewer that can solve this problem and perhaps there is one you know of? I am aware of something called PDF Reflow in Acrobat Reader but that only works with certain specific (tagged) files. I want a PDF viewer with a smarter zoom/next page function or an automatic margin-crop function. Is there such a thing?
