• Updating Banshee to 2.4

  I have banshee 2.2.1 with Ubuntu 11.10 I have been trying to update banshee to 2.4 (released yesterday) but it just isnt working, I have been using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa in terminal, from the Banshee.fm website. but after running through terminal it says this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa You are about to add the following PPA to your system: PPA for Banshee Team This PPA contains the latest stable debs of Banshee for Ubuntu. To install Banshee, you must first enable the PPA on your system: 1. Open Software Sources (System->Administration->Software Sources) 2. Navigate to the "Third Party Sources" tab. 3. Click "Add" 4. Enter the APT line below that corresponds to your Ubuntu version that starts with "deb". 5. Click "Add Source" 6. Click "Close" 7. It will prompt you to reload your software cache. Click "Reload". 8. Now install the package "banshee" from Synaptic, or using the command below: sudo apt-get install banshee For those who wish to compile from trunk, add the deb-src line and then run "sudo apt-get build-dep" to install all required dependencies before starting to compile. • An Overview of Batch Processing in Java EE 7

  Up on otn/java is a new article by Oracle senior software engineer Mahesh Kannan, titled “An Overview of Batch Processing in Java EE 7.0,” which explains the new batch processing capabilities provided by JSR 352 in Java EE 7. Kannan explains that “Batch processing is used in many industries for tasks ranging from payroll processing; statement generation; end-of-day jobs such as interest calculation and ETL (extract, load, and transform) in a data warehouse; and many more. Typically, batch processing is bulk-oriented, non-interactive, and long running—and might be data- or computation-intensive. Batch jobs can be run on schedule or initiated on demand. Also, since batch jobs are typically long-running jobs, check-pointing and restarting are common features found in batch jobs.” JSR 352 defines the programming model for batch applications plus a runtime to run and manage batch jobs. The article covers feature highlights, selected APIs, the structure of Job Scheduling Language, and explains some of the key functions of JSR 352 using a simple payroll processing application. The article also describes how developers can run batch applications using GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4.0. Kannan summarizes the article as follows: “In this article, we saw how to write, package, and run simple batch applications that use chunk-style steps. We also saw how the checkpoint feature of the batch runtime allows for the easy restart of failed batch jobs. Yet, we have barely scratched the surface of JSR 352. With the full set of Java EE components and features at your disposal, including servlets, EJB beans, CDI beans, EJB automatic timers, and so on, feature-rich batch applications can be written fairly easily.” Check out the article here.

The lists are supplied by PwnedList, a massive database of security breach data, and securely indexed against your accounts within the LastPass system. If there is a security breach and your email is on the list, you’ll receive an automated email notice indicating which website was compromised and that your email address was one of the positive matches from the breach list. • Problem with SNMP and MIBs

  I am installing Zabbix to monitor via snmp some devices from a machine running Ubuntu 12.04 server. There is a problem with MIB definitions, since snmp commands do no properly translate some of the MIBs. I have already installed the "snmp-mibs-downloader" package, so the files containing the MIB descriptions are properly installed. The MIB are only translated to obtain the numeric key (the MIB files are accessible to the snmp commands), but the results returned by the snmpget command do not properly translate the key. The zabbix templates that I am using do expect the key translated (SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0) , so, the current results are not recognised and these are ignored. Test case: $ snmptranslate -On SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0 .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 $ snmpget -v 2c -c public 192.168.1.1 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 iso.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 = Timeticks: (2911822510) 337 days, 0:23:45.10 On another machine (running a very old Red Hat based distribution), the snmp commands perform both, the directe and reverse traslation, as expected: # snmptranslate -On SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0 .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 # snmpget -v 2c -c public 192.168.1.1 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0 = Timeticks: (2911819485) 337 days, 0:23:14.85 What is the problem on my Ubuntu box? • Change Password vs. Reset Password-Week 42

  You can find this week’s video here. The differences between change password and reset password are not well known. This week's video walks through the differences and shows them in action. Tune in to find out more about password management. It wasn’t until fairly recently that I realized that there is a difference between a change password and a reset password. One is safe, while the other not so much. I remember when Windows Server 2003 was first released and resetting a user’s password had a distinct warning about irreversible loss of information. I wondered why it wasn’t mentioned in previous operating systems, but I also wondered if it was true since I never personally noticed any impact. It wasn’t until about a year ago when I really dug in to understand this topic better. This week’s lesson covers the differences between a change password and a reset password. In this video we also take a look at it in action so that we have a solid understanding of the topic, and briefly discuss how it works for programming APIs too. • Creating a new project for Team Foundation Server Basic.

  We have installed and configured TFS, we have connected to it using Visual Studio.  Now it is time to get a project created. From Team Explorer, we will right click on the servername\Collection item in the tree to select New Team Project. Once selected, this will open the New Team Project dialog.  Provide a name, then click Next.   The next step is to select a Project Template.  By default you will have 2 available (but there are many downloadable options).  It is important to understand what the templates bring and what options we will live with in the Lifecycle Management option we select. Once selected, click Next. Now we are at the point to specify where our code will be collected, Source Code settings part of the wizard.  Since we are starting new, we will select an empty folder. Click Next. Next we get a Summary view of the options selected. Click Finish. Once the template is downloaded, applied and our choices processed, we have completed the project creation.   This should be our final product …

  In a fresh new Ubuntu machine, I have installed ruby with sudo apt-get install ruby1.8 and then installed rubygem1.8 with : sudo apt-get install rubygems and after that installed rails3.2.8 with : gem install rails The procedure was very simple. But here comes the problem. So I: Installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop x86 on a VMWare virtual machine, Installed eclipse-cdt and linux-headers-2.6.38-8 using Synaptic Package Manager, Created a C Project named TestDriver1 and copy-pasted above code to it, Changed the default build command, make, to the following customized build command: make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/build M=/home/isaac/workspace/TestDriver1 The problem I get an error when I try to build this project using eclipse. Here is the log for the build: **** Build of configuration Debug for project TestDriver1 **** make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/build M=/home/isaac/workspace/TestDriver1 all make: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic' make: *** No rule to make target vmlinux', needed byall'. Stop. make: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic' Interestingly, I get no error when I use shell instead of eclipse to build this project. To use shell, I just create a Makefile containing obj-m += TestDriver1.o and use the above make command to build. So, something must be wrong with the eclipse Makefile. Maybe it is looking for the vmlinux architecture (?) or something while current architecture is x86. Maybe it's because of VMWare? As I understood, eclipse creates the makefiles automatically and modifying it manually would cause errors in the future OR make managing makefile difficult. So, how can I compile this project on eclipse?

It was well attended - the feedback was that it was a little short - thats probably because in writing it I bacame very time-concious after the ASM/ACFS on Solaris extravaganza I ran last year which was almost too long for mortal man to finish in the 1 hour session. Also included is the creation of zpools and zfs file systems - the basic building blocks of the technology, and also Compression which is the compliment of Deduplication. The exercises are just introductions - you are referred to the ZFS Adminstration Manual for further information. From Solaris 11 onward the online manual pages consist of zpool(1M) and zfs(1M) with further feature-specific information in zfs_allow(1M), zfs_encrypt(1M) and zfs_share(1M). The lzjb compression algorithm is optimized for performance while providing decent data compression. Setting compression to on uses the lzjb compression algorithm. The gzip compression algorithm uses the same compression as the gzip(1) command. You can specify the gzip level by using the value gzip-N where N is an integer from 1 (fastest) to 9 (best compression ratio). Currently, gzip is equivalent to gzip-6 (which is also the default for gzip(1)). Create a second filesystem with compression turned on. With the property enabled duplicate data blocks are removed synchronously. The result is that only unique data is stored and common componenents are shared. • How to install OpenCV without nVidia drivers

  I have a laptop with on-board Intel graphics. I have been using OpenCV for years with this machine and I have managed to avoid manual compilation so far. But in Ubuntu 13.10, when I try to install libopencv-dev from the repositories, it brings along libopencv-ocl, which seems to be dependent on nvidia drivers. Letting the driver install messes up my xserver completely and when I do glxinfo afterwards, I get this: name of display: :0.0 Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". To solve this, I purge all nVidia drivers and reinstall xserver, much like it has been suggested here, and when I purge the nvidia drivers, OpenCV development libraries are also removed, as apt-get tells me they are no longer needed. This is foreign to me, because I expected a warning that I have installed packages that depend on this, but how can removing a dependency automatically remove the package I installed without warnings or asking? I understand it has something to do with nVidia being the provider of the libopencv-ocl in the repo. How could I get around it? I would rather not compile OpenCV if I can help it. I have seen similar questions, but not a suitable answer.

• How to implement Facebook leaderboard game for mobile?

  I am in the final stages of developing an indie C# mobile game that I will deploy to iPhones and Androids using Mono. I wish to add push notifications and a Facebook leader board feature into the game, such that the user will be presented with a list of all his/her friends that are playing the game and their weekly scores in the main screen. I have ZERO experience with web development/networking/databases. I recently started researching the field and formed a basic understanding. Facebook has SDKs in PHP, JavaScript, obj-c and java, tho reading the documentation examples still feels cryptic to me since it involves web/server tech. After researching some more, I understood that my options for server side are basically PHP or ASP.Net. It seems that ASP.Net is more favorable in my case since I am already proficient with C# (but there is no ASP.net SDK from Facebook... I am not sure if this implies that I cant interact with Facebook using ASP.Net). On the down side some have mentioned higher costs for ASP.Net, tho I havent looked further into that aspect yet. I also understood that JavaScript is client side technology. I started going through tutorials of ASP.Net, I was thinking that ASP.Net is a purely server side management language, but it started feeling more like WPF as those tutorials started getting into very lengthy discussions about creating website interfaces and styles. I am not interested in that, I just want to have a web server which my app can somehow communicate with and get friends/scores. Am I learning the right technologies for my goal? should I be learning something else? I am posting this in hopes that someone who knows this field well can see through my problem and help guide me, otherwise I could spend months studying something that might not be the right solution to my goal. • Web workflow solution - how should I approach the design?

  We've been tasked with creating a web based workflow tool to track change management. It has a single workflow with multiple synchronous tasks for the most part, but branch out at a point to tasks running in parallel which meet up later on. There will be all sorts of people using the application, and all of them will need to see their outstanding tasks for each change, but only theirs, not others. There will also be a high level group of people who oversee all changes, so need to see everything. They will need to see tasks which have not been done in the specified time, who's responsible etc. The data will be persisted to a SQL database. It'll all be put together using .Net. I've been trying to learn and implement OOP into my designs of late, but I'm wondering if this is moot in this instance as it may be better to have the business logic for this in stored procedures in the DB. I could use POCO's, a front end layer and a data access layer for the web application and just use it as a mechanism for CRUD actions on the DB, then use SP's fired in the DB to apply the business rules. On the other hand, I could use an object oriented design within the web app, but as the data in the app is state-less, is this a bad idea? I could try and model out the whole application into a class structure, implementing interfaces, base classes and all that good stuff. So I would create a change class, which contained a list of task classes/types, which defined each task, and implement an ITask interface etc. Put end-user types into the tasks to identify who should be doing what task. Then apply all the business logic in the respective class methods etc. What approach do you guys think I should be using for this solution?

  I tried to install minidlna on my machine but it appeared to me that it's not in repositories anymore. Well then I decided to compile it myself. After downloading version 1.1.3 I tried to compile but I needed libav headers which I couldn't install via apt - no idea why there has been a lot of broken packages: $ sudo apt-get install libavcodec-dev Reading package lists... This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming.
