    I'm working on a 64-bit Windows and my applicaiton runs with elevated privileges. I have a problem with the following very simple piece of code: myKey = Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey(@"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"); if (myKey != null) { string[] HKLMvaluenames = myKey.GetValueNames(); } But for some reason HKLMvaluenames array is populated with values from the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Is there a way around this problem?

It's DataNavigateUrlFormatString property is set to View.aspx?id={0}&isTechnical={1} Select command of appropriate SqlDataSource returns columns of type INT and BIT (from SQL Server 2008). So displayed string becomes something like View.aspx?id=1&isTechnical=1. But I want to display isTechnical=true|False, i.e. Convert.ToBoolean(row["isTechnical"]).ToString().ToLowerInvariant(). How to implement such conversion in page markup?

  • Script to UPDATE STATISTICS with time window

    I recently spent some time troubleshooting odd query plans and came to the conclusion that we needed better statistics.  We’ve been running sp_updatestats but apparently it wasn’t sampling enough of the table to get us what we needed.  I have a pretty limited window at night where I can hammer the disks while this runs.  The script below just calls UPDATE STATITICS on all tables that “need” updating.  It defines need as any table whose statistics are older than the number of days you specify (30 by default).  It also has a throttle so it breaks out of the loop after a set amount of time (60 minutes).  That means it won’t start processing a new table after this time but it might take longer than this to finish what it’s doing.  It always processes the oldest statistics first so it will eventually get to all of them.  It defaults to sample 25% of the table.  I’m not sure that’s a good default but it works for now.  I’ve tested this in SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008.  I liked the way Michelle parameterized her re-index script and I took the same approach.   • HOWTO Turn off SPARC T4 or Intel AES-NI crypto acceleration.

    Since we released hardware crypto acceleration for SPARC T4 and Intel AES-NI support we have had a common question come up: 'How do I test without the hardware crypto acceleration?'. Initially this came up just for development use so developers can do unit testing on a machine that has hardware offload but still cover the code paths for a machine that doesn't (our integration and release testing would run on all supported types of hardware anyway).  I've also seen it asked in a customer context too so that we can show that there is a performance gain from the hardware crypto acceleration, (not just the fact that SPARC T4 much faster performing processor than T3) and measure what it is for their application. With SPARC T2/T3 we could easily disable the hardware crypto offload by running 'cryptoadm disable provider=n2cp/0'.  We can't do that with SPARC T4 or with Intel AES-NI because in both of those classes of processor the encryption doesn't require a device driver instead it is unprivileged user land callable instructions. Turns out there is away to do this by using features of the Solaris runtime loader (ld.so.1). First I need to expose a little bit of implementation detail about how the Solaris Cryptographic Framework is implemented in Solaris 11.  One of the new Solaris 11 features of the linker/loader is the ability to have a single ELF object that has multiple different implementations of the same functions that are selected at runtime based on the capabilities of the machine.  The alternate to this is having the application coded to call getisax() and make the choice itself.  We use this functionality of the linker/loader when we build the userland libraries for the Solaris Cryptographic Framework (specifically libmd.so, and the unfortunately misnamed due to historical reasons libsoftcrypto.so) The Solaris linker/loader allows control of a lot of its functionality via environment variables, we can use that to control the version of the cryptographic functions we run.  To do this we simply export the LD_HWCAP environment variable with values that tell ld.so.1 to not select the HWCAP section matching certain features even if isainfo says they are present.  For SPARC T4 that would be: export LD_HWCAP="-aes -des -md5 -sha256 -sha512 -mont -mpul" and for Intel systems with AES-NI support: export LD_HWCAP="-aes" This will work for consumers of the Solaris Cryptographic Framework that use the Solaris PKCS#11 libraries or use libmd.so interfaces directly.  It also works for the Oracle DB and Java JCE.  However does not work for the default enabled OpenSSL "t4" or "aes-ni" engines (unfortunately) because they do explicit calls to getisax() themselves rather than using multiple ELF cap sections. However we can still use OpenSSL to demonstrate this by explicitly selecting "pkcs11" engine  using only a single process and thread.  $ openssl speed -engine pkcs11 -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 54170.81k 187416.00k 489725.70k 805445.63k 1018880.00k $ LD_HWCAP="-aes" openssl speed -engine pkcs11 -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 29376.37k 58328.13k 79031.55k 86738.26k 89191.77k We can clearly see the difference this makes in the case where AES offload to the SPARC T4 was disabled. The "t4" engine is faster than the pkcs11 one because there is less overhead (again on a SPARC T4-1 using only a single process/thread - using -multi you will get even bigger numbers). $ openssl speed -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 85526.61k 89298.84k 91970.30k 92662.78k 92842.67k Yet another cool feature of the Solaris linker/loader, thanks Rod and Ali. Note these above openssl speed output is not intended to show the actual performance of any particular benchmark just that there is a significant improvement from using hardware acceleration on SPARC T4.   • How do I set Internet Explorer 64-bit as my default browser?

    Windows Vista x64. It defaults to IE 32-bit, and will not allow me to set 64-bit as the default with the "Make Default" button. I'm currently forced to workaround by starting IE 64-bit manually, and leaving it up with an empty window. Then when links are fired from apps, they open in that 64-bit version. Problem being is that sometimes I forget and get a bunch of stuff opened in 32-bit without realizing it. Then I have to remember all the links I clicked, close ALL of them, open IE 64-bit, and put them all back in. Trying to avoid all that re-work when I forget to do the workaround. Unfortunately, all the forums I've googled that discuss this just have a bunch of people saying "don't do that" and "you don't want to do that". Yes, I do want to do this. The particular feature I use only works right in my 64-bit version, and I don't use 32-bit plugins. I fully understand the implications of what I'm doing. :-)

    Trying OCR with Tess4J and able to make it work as a standalone application on 64 bit windows. I am using eclipse for the same. Now I am trying to create a war of the same code and deploy it in Tomcat7 and call the api using a servlet.   • Breakpoints are ignored when debugging in Visual Studio 2008 on 64-bit system

    I'm trying to debug an ASP.NET web application in this environment: Windows Server Standard 2008 SP2 x64 Single-core CPU 4GB RAM Visual Studio 2008 with Remote Debugger SP1 .NET 3.5 Web Application running in IIS in 64-bit mode The code I am trying to debug is a simple event handler with some basic sequential code. What I observe is that breakpoints get randomly ignored and VS often exits debug mode when I try to step through the code. The code is compiled in debug mode. I've tried all the usual steps: iisreset, reboot VM, rebuild solution, reinstall Visual Studio. Any ideas?

  • determine if parity bit representation in MIPS

    Is there some instruction in MIPS that will determine the parity of a certain bit representation? I know to determine whether a "number" has an even parity or an odd parity is to XOR the individual bits of the binary representation together, but that seems computationally-intensive for a set of MIPS instructions... and I need to do this as quick as possible. Also, the number I'm working in is represented in Grey Code... just to throw that in there. So is there some pseudo-instruction in MIPS to determine the parity of a "number" or do I have to do it by hand? Thanks, Hristo

  • OPOS not working on 64 bit system

    Anyone have experience with OPOS? I can't get my app to recognize the LDNs for the devices running on a 64 bit machine. I've got down to the point where I know that the OleforRetail stuff is now under Wow6432Node in the Registry. I suspect the common controls can't find the LDN because of this. Is there any kind of workaround? Failing that, is there a centralized OPOS development forum somewhere? BTW: I work with the common controls supplied by Monroe Consulting. Thanks!

    I realize that I am attempting to go beyond the "supported" behavior of the manf's released drivers for perl, after all they have only released it in package with x86 .so's. However, since I cannot use their package with x64 Perl on a RHEL 5.4 x86_64 box, and maintaining a seperate install of x86 perl just for this one package, I have made an attempt to get this puppy working thanks to released 64-bit .so's that accompany other driver packages for Advantage. What I have done to this point: download beta 10 DBI drivers, in 32 download beta 10 PHP extension (it contains 32 and x86_64) copy the required DLLs into the ads-lib location (eg /usr/local/ads/lib64) compile the Perl DBI driver with the path to the lib64's .so's Good compilation, good install, good use. The problem is that I always get : failed: [iAnywhere Solutions][Advantage SQL][ASA] Error 6060: Advantage Database Server not available on specified server. axServerConnect (SQL-HY000)(DBD: db_login/SQLConnect err=-1) Does anyone have any ideas?   • What's a good bit of JS or JQuery for horizontally scrolling news ticker

    Hi, I am looking for a little bit of JQuery or JS that allows me to produce a horizontally scrolling "news ticker" list. The produced HTML needs to be standards compliant as well. I have tried liScroll but this has a habit of breaking (some content ends up on a second line at the start of the scroll), especially with longer lists. I have also tried this News Ticker but when a DOCTYPE is included the scrolling will jolt rather than cycle smoothly at the end of each cycle. Any suggestions are appreciated. Edit So thanks to Matt Hinze's suggestion I realised I could do what I wanted to do with JQuery animate (I require continuous scrolling not discrete scrolling like the example). However, I quickly ran into similar problems to those I was having with liScroll and after all that realised a CSS issue (as always) was responsible. Solution: liScroll - change the default 'var stripWidth = 0' to something like 100, to give a little space and avoid new line wrapping.

  • VS2008 on Win7 64-Bit: Debugging a Windows Service

    Hi all, I'm trying to debug a Windows Service using VS2008 on Win7 64-Bit. The problem I'm having is that none of my breakpoints are being hit, regardless of which build configuration I choose: x86, x64 or AnyCPU. Using "Attach to Process" after the service has started, none of the breakpoints are hit - yet the IDE doesn't inform me that they won't be hit (by making the solid red circle and outline, for instance) - it simply seems to act as if the breakpoints weren't even there. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Thanks /Richard.

I am not interested in 64bit version of VS (I am wanting to install a 32bit version of VS2010 professional on a 64 bit XP machine). I am aware that XP will require SP3. Any warnings? Horror stories? Advice?

  • 80x86 16-bit asm: lea cx, [cx*8+cx] causes error on NASM (compiling .com file)

    Title says it all. The error NASM gives (dispite my working OS) is "invalid effective address". Now i've seen many examples of how to use LEA and i think i gots it right but yet my NASM dislikes it. I tried "lea cx, [cx+9]" and it worked; "lea cx, [bx+cx]" didn't. Now if i extended my registers to 32-bits (i.e. "lea ecx, [ecx*8+ecx]") everything would be well but i am restricted to use 16- and 8-bit registers only. Is here anyone so knoweledgeable who could explain me WHY my assembler doesn't let me use lea the way i supposed it should be used? Thanks.

  • PHP: Replace umlauts with closest 7-bit ASCII equivalent in an UTF-8 string

    What I want to do is to remove all accents and umlauts from a string, turning "lärm" into "larm" or "andré" into "andre". What I tried to do was to utf8_decode the string and then use strtr on it, but since my source file is saved as UTF-8 file, I can't enter the ISO-8859-15 characters for all umlauts - the editor inserts the UTF-8 characters.   • About enumerations in Delphi and c++ in 64-bit environments

    I recently had to work around the different default sizes used for enumerations in Delphi and c++ since i have to use a c++ dll from a delphi application. On function call returns an array of structs (or records in delphi), the first element of which is an enum. To make this work, I use packed records (or aligned(1)-structs). However, since delphi selects the size of an enum-variable dynamically by default and uses the smallest datatype possible (it was a byte in my case), but C++ uses an int for enums, my data was not interpreted correctly. Delphi offers a compiler switch to work around this, so the declaration of the enum becomes {$Z4} TTypeofLight = ( V3d_AMBIENT, V3d_DIRECTIONAL, V3d_POSITIONAL, V3d_SPOT ); {$Z1} My Questions are: What will become of my structs when they are compiled on/for a 64-bit environment? Does the default c++ integer grow to 8 Bytes? Are there other memory alignment / data type size modifications (other than pointers)?

  • Help porting a bit of Prototype JavaScript to jQuery

    I have already implemented some AJAX pagination in my Rails app by using the example code for the will_paginate plugin--which is apparently using Prototype. But if I wanted to switch to using jQuery for future additions, I really don't want to have the Prototype stuff sitting around too (yes, I know it's possible).   • Cheap windows driver signing for 64 bit Windows 7

    I need to install the libusb-win32 driver on Windows 7 64 bit machines. This driver is open source so it is not digitally signed so I want to do this my self but I wonder if this can be done WITHOUT paying lot of money. Is it possible to use a certificate which is NOT signed by Verisign or GlobalSign? Maybe self-signed or by using StartSSL instead? And if yes, how do I do it? According to this howto I have to use a "cross-certificate" (And there are only six available on the Microsoft list and most of them are for CAs which are no longer active) I don't care if the user is confronted with a warning message. I can even accept if the user has to install a special CA certificate first. I only require that the driver runs without manually disabling the signature check on each windows startup.

    I am reading a book and I am not sure if its a mistake or I am misunderstanding the quote. It reads... Nowadays every PC you can buy has hardware that can render images with at least 16.7 million individual colors. Rather than have an array with thousands of color entries, the images instead contain explicit color values for each pixel. A 24-bit display, of course, uses 24 bits, or 3 bytes per pixel, for color information. This gives 1 byte, or 256 distinct values each, for red, green, and blue. This is generally called true color, because 256^3 (16.7 million) He says 1 byte is equal to 256 distinct values. 1 byte = 8 bits. 8^2 bits = 64 distinct colors right ?? It's not adding up right to me. I know it might be something simple to understand, but I don't understand.
