  • Local User & Local Admin User Server 2008

    Hi I had a test recently and one of the questions was to create a file and local user and give the local user write permission to that file. I created the local user successfully however when I went to add permission to the file it would not find the local user when name was entered correctly, and idea what could have prevented this. Secondly I was asked to create a local admin account and give full permissions to the file, to my knowledge server 2008 has a built in admin account, and neither was the server a domain controller. Could you tell me what you would do in this situation? Many Thanks!

  • Is it a bad idea to run SELinux and AppArmor at the same time?

    My corporate policy says that Linux boxes must be secured with SELinux (so that a security auditor can check the 'yes, we're extremely secure!' checkbox for each server). I had hoped to take advantage of Ubuntu's awesome default AppArmor security. Is it unwise to run both Apparmor and SELinux? (If so, can this bad idea be mitigated with some apparmor and/or selinux tweaks?) Update 1/28 -- Kees Cook has pointed out in his answer the dead simple reason why it's a bad idea to run both -- the Linux kernel says you can't1. [ 1 More precisely, the Linux Security Modules interface framework is designed for a single running implementation, and does not support more than a single running implementation. ] Update 1/27 -- I've accepted the answer from kenny.r , though I would be happier with some more technical reasons of why this would fail, or examples of actual conflicts that this would cause.

  • How to create a password-less service account in AD?

    Is it possible to create domain accounts that can only be accessed via a domain administrator or similar access? The goal is to create domain users that have certain network access based on their task but these users are only meant for automated jobs. As such, they don't need passwords and a domain admin can always do a run-as to drop down to the correct user to run the job. No password means no chance of someone guessing it or it being written down or lost. This may belong on SuperUser ServerFault but I am going to try here first since it's on the fuzzy border to me. I am also open to constructive alternatives.

  • Cannot login in account with encrypted home after update from 11.04 to 11.10

    After upgrading from ubuntu 11.04 to 10.10 I cannot access my encrypted home partition anymore. I can login, however all data stays encrypted. ecryptfs-mount-private gives: ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly Any idea how to fix this? Update I have several kernels installed (after the upgrade my menu.lst looks like this: http://paste.org/pastebin/view/35591) the problem is the same for all kernels. Booting from 2.6.32-27-generic and adduser --encrypt-home tes gives: Adding user `tes' ... Adding new group `tes' (1008) ... Adding new user `tes' (1007) with group `tes' ... Creating home directory `/home/tes' ...     Trying to regain access to a Facebook account I haven't used in years which was set up while I was in school with my school email account, which no longer exists. Don't know the password to the Facebook account. I went here and made a request. Got an email within minutes and and replied to it. That was over week ago. Anyone gone through this before? How long did it take? Any way to expedite the process? Any alternate way to contact Facebook team and get some help with this?

  • AD account locks out when using Outlook 2007?

    Hi, I/we have a problem with our Windows Server 2008 forest and Exchange. We are buying Exchange hosting from another firm and Exchange Server is in their Windows Server 2008 forest. So, we have two forests and there isn't any trusts between these two forests. Our own forest logon name is [email protected] and we also use the same email address to logon to the Exchange mailbox. Everything works fine if both our AD account and Exchange mailbox account have the same password, but if the passwords don't match, our AD account gets locked out. I have tried to figure out why Outlook sends false logon attemps to our AD. If someone can help, please do.

  • Is using ELSE bad programming?

    I've often come across bugs that have been caused by using the ELSE construct. A prime example is something along the lines of: If (passwordCheck() == false){ displayMessage(); }else{ letThemIn(); } To me this screams security problem. I know that passwordCheck is likely to be a boolean, but I wouldn't place my applications security on it. What would happen if its a string, int etc? I usually try to avoid using ELSE, and instead opt for two completely separate IF statements to test for what I expect. Anything else then either gets ignored OR is specifically handled. Surely this is a better way to prevent bugs / security issues entering your app. How do you guys do it?
