  • Cloud Sample Code on OTN

    In recent months our blog has covered many aspects of the overall Oracle Cloud platform, whether it's PaaS (Java Cloud Service, Database Cloud Service) or SaaS (Sales Cloud Application Composer). Teams within Oracle have been busy building demos and proof-of-concept applications using the same technologies, and we have now started posting some of these as code samples on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN).  The zip files include both the source code and helpful information to get you started using the code.  Everything is covered under a BSD license.  In future blog posts we will dive deeper into some of these applications.   • Which is more effective in coding? Reducing line of code and execution of code?

    I have this doubt many years. I am wring some code to achieve some functionality. For example I am writing 20 lines of code to achieve the functionality and my co worker writing the code for the same functionality with just 5 lines. Since he used some looping statement to achieve that, but that code will execute around 30 to 50 times. So which is best way of coding? As per my knowledge I always try to reduce coding length as much I can.

    The final step is to put an object into the Lookup on key listening in each of the JEditorPanes, e.g., a "City" object for the CityEditorPane and a "Country" object for the CountryEditorPane. Then, within the CompletionProviders, only add items to the CompletionResultSet if the object of interest is in the Lookup.   • What are the design principles that promote testable code? (designing testable code vs driving design through tests)

    Most of the projects that I work on consider development and unit testing in isolation which makes writing unit tests at a later instance a nightmare. My objective is to keep testing in mind during the high level and low level design phases itself. I want to know if there are any well defined design principles that promote testable code. One such principle that I have come to understand recently is Dependency Inversion through Dependency injection and Inversion of Control. I have read that there is something known as SOLID. I want to understand if following the SOLID principles indirectly results in code that is easily testable? If not, are there any well-defined design principles that promote testable code? I am aware that there is something known as Test Driven Development. Although, I am more interested in designing code with testing in mind during the design phase itself rather than driving design through tests. I hope this makes sense. One more question related to this topic is whether it's alright to re-factor an existing product/project and make changes to code and design for the purpose of being able to write a unit test case for each module?

  • How to separate and maintain customer specific code

    I am implementing customer specific code and currently following simple approach like if (cusomterId == 23) do it. I want to separate out all the customer related code in separate place. But I have following problems. In code is in 1. Stored procs 2. Plain old classes. 3. Controllers 4. Views I came up with two solutions. First is to create table CustomerFunctionlity with columns CustomerId, FunctionalityName, method/Proc, inputs/outputs With this table I can simply check if exists, execute given function. Another way is creating a factory which returns customer related object for an interface. I am writting small end to end customer specific functionalities. How can I write maintenable code. Thanks

  • Is testable code actually more stable? [closed]

    A google scholar search turns up numerous papers on testability, including models for computing testability, recommendations for how ones code can be more testable, etc. They all come with the assertion that more testable code is more stable, however I can't find any studies which actually demonstrate this. I tried looking for studies evaluating the effect of testable code vs. quality, however the closest I can find is Improving the Testability of Object Oriented Systems, which discusses the relationship between design flaws and testability. Is testable code is actually more stable? And why, or why not? Please back up your answers with references or evidence to back up your claim.

To make my code more readable, I decided to replace this code: if(arg1==NULL || arg2==NULL || arg3==NULL...) { return SOME_ERROR; } With that macro: NULL_CHECK(arg1,arg2,...) How should I write it, if the number of args is unknown and they can point to different structs?(I work in C99)

  • How can I help fellow students struggling in programming classes?

    I'm a computer science student finishing up my second semester of programming classes. I've enjoyed them quite a bit, and learned a lot, but it seems other students are struggling with the concepts and assignments more than I am. When an assignment is due, the inevitable group email comes out the day or two before with people needing some help either with a specific part of the problem, or sometimes people just seem to have a hard time knowing where to start. I'd really like to be able to help out, but I have a hard time thinking of the right way to give them help without giving them the answer. When I'm having trouble understanding a concept, a code snippet can go along way to helping me, but at the same time if it makes a lot of sense, it can be difficult to think of another way to go about it. Plus the Academic Integrity section of each assignment is always looming overhead warning against sharing code with others. I've tried using pseudo code to help give others an idea on program flow, leaving them to figure out how to implement certain aspects of it, but I didn't get too much feedback and don't know how much it actually helped them out, or if it just confused them further. So I'm basically looking to see if anyone has experience with this, or good ways that I can help out other students to nudge them in the right direction or help them think about the problem in the right way.

    This IS NOT a Homework question! While building my current student database project I realized that I may want to identify comprehensive information about a database design in the future. More-so if I am fortunate enough to get a job in this field and were handed a database project how could I break down certain elements for identification... In all of my previous designs I have been using MySQL Community Server (GPL) 5.1.42, I thought (duh) that I was using the MyISAM based on most of my text-book instruction and MySQL 5.0 Reference Manual :: 13 Storage Engines :: 13.1 The MyISAM Storage Engine I determined that this was in fact incorrect for this version and the use of "SHOW ENGINES" at the console... No problem, figured out why they have "versions" the need to pay attention to what version is being used, and the need for a means to determine what I am about to mess up "if" I do not pay attention to detail... Q1. Specifically what statement will identify the version used by someone elses initial database creation? (since I created my own databases I know what version I used) Q2. Specifically what statement will identify the storage engine that the developer used when creating the database. (I specified a particular database in my collection then tried SHOW Engine, did not work, then tried to just get the metadata from one table in that database: mysql SELECT duck_cust, table_type, engine - FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.tables - WHERE table_schema = 'tp' - ORDER BY table_type ASC, table_name DESC; as this was not really what I wanted (and did not work) I am looking for some direction from the pros... Q3. (If you really have the inclination to continue helping) If I were to access a database from an earlier/later "version" are there backward/forward compatibility issues for maintaining/updating data between versions?     I got the following, quite puzzling error today when running a unit test: java.lang.ClassFormatError: Absent Code attribute in method that is not native or abstract in class file javax/servlet/http/Cookie A google search found this post, which explains that it is caused by having an interface in the classpath, and not an actual implementation. In this case it’s the java-ee interface. To fix this I added the jetty servlet api implementation to my pom: jetty javax.servlet test Piece of cake. I have run in to this before, so I figured I would capture the fix here in case I run in to it again.

  • Advice on selecting programming languages to concentrate on? (2nd year IT security student)

    I'm in the process of considering which programming languages I should devote the majority of my coding studies to. I'm a 2nd year CS student, majoring in IT security. What I want to do/work with: Intelligence gathering Relational databases Virus design Snort network IPS Current coding experience (what I'm going to keep): Java - intermediate HTML5 - intermediate SQL (MySQL, Oracle 11g) - basic BASH - basic I'm going to need to learn (at least) one of the following languages in order to be successful in my field. Languages to add (at least 1): Ruby (+Metasploit) C++ (virus design, low-level driver interaction, computationally intensive applications) Python (import ALL the things) My dilemma: If I diversify too broadly, I won't be able to focus on, and improve in a specific niche. Does anyone have any advice as to how I should select a language? What I'm considering + why I'm leaning towards Ruby because of Metasploit support, despite lower efficiency when compared to Python. Any suggestions based on real-world experience? Should I focus on Ruby, Python, or C++? Both Ruby, and Python have been regarded as syntactically similar to Java which my degree is based around. I'm going to be studying C++ in two years as a component of my malicious code class. Thanks, Tyler

  • How does a CS student negotiate in/after a job interview?

    Alright, I've gotten to the second step in the interview process. At this point I'm working under the assumption that I might be offered a position -- flying my butt to Redmond would be quite an expense if they weren't at least considering me for something (*crosses fingers*). So, if one is offered a position, how should a CS student negotiate? I've heard a few strategies about dealing with software companies when you are being considered for a hire, but most of them are considering the developer in a powerful position. In such examinations, (s)he has lots of job experience, and may even be overqualified for what the employer is looking for. (s)he is part of a small job market of qualified developers, because 99% of applications companies receive are from those who are woefully under qualified. I'm in a completely different position. I think I compare favorably to most of my fellow students, and I have been a programmer for almost 10 years, but often I still feel green compared to most of my coworkers. I'm in a position where the employer holds most of the chips; they'd be doing me quite a favor by hiring me. I think this scenario is considerably different than the targets for most of the advice I've seen. Above all, I don't want to be such a prick negotiating that it damages my chances to actually operate in a position, even if it means not negotiating at all. How should one approach a scenario like this? P.S. If this is off topic feel free to close it -- I think it's borderline and I'm of the opinion that it's better to ask and be closed than not ask at all ;)

I followed the instructions (or so I thought) and the code signing claims to be done right, however when I try to verify the tool shows an error. I have no idea what it means and no idea how to fix this. Any comments would be appreciated.   • What does the status code of the Perl interpreter mean?

    Hi, This might sound slightly confusing, but please bear with me. I'm trying to execute a copy of the Perl interpreter using Java's Runtime.exec(). However, it returned error code 9. After running the file a few times, the perl interpreter mysteriously started to return code 253 with no changes in my command at all. What does code 253 / code 9 mean? A google search for perl interpreter's exit codes turned up nothing. Where can I find a list of exit codes for the Perl interpreter? Thanks!

  • Compiler is able to find function without matching .h file is updated?

    Hello Friends, I'm writing a C University project and stumbled upon a compiler behavior which I don't understand. In this file http://code.google.com/p/openu-bsc-maximveksler/source/browse/trunk/20465/semester/tasks/maman14/alpha/maman14/assembler/phaseOne.c?r=112 I've added a call to function named freeAsmInstruction(). This function is defined in file named lineParser.c, yet I haven't updated the matching lineParser.h header file to include this function declaration. Why does this code compile? I would expect that gcc would fail to compile phaseOne.c until the correct lineParser.h is updated with the declaration of freeAsmInstruction(). I would appreciate an explanation. Thank you, Maxim

  • How can I use Code Contracts in a C++/CLI project?

    I recently stumbled upon Code Contracts and have started using them in my C# projects. However, I also have a number of projects written in C++/CLI. For C# and VB, Code Contracts offer a handy configuration panel in the project properties dialog. For a C++/CLI project, there is no such panel. From the documentation, I got the impression that adding Code Contracts support to a C++/CLI project should be a simple matter of calling some external tools as part of the build process (namely ccrefgen.exe, cccheck.exe, and ccrewrite.exe). However, the number of command line options and restrictions concerning the call sequence have me somewhat intimidated. Can anybody point me to a simple way to run the Code Contracts tools as an automated part of the build process in Visual Studio?

What's a good tool / business practice for me to move my PHP web-application code from DEV to TEST to the PROD environment? Realizing that my TEST environment still only connects to my TEST database; whereas, I need to PROD environment to connect to my PROD database. So the code is mostly the same, except that I need to change my TEST code once moved into PROD to connect to the PROD database and not TEST database. I've heard of people taking down Apache in such away that it doesn't allow new connections and once all the existing connections are idle it simply brings down the web server. Then people manually copy the code and then manually update the config files of the PHP application to also point to the PROD instance. That seems terribly dangerous. Does a best practice exists?
