  • Trying to get Hobbit clients to show cpu, mem, disk, etc

    - by Bryan Agee
I have a Hobbit server set up with a handful of hosts using conn, http, ssh, and sslcert services, but would like to add the other tests as well. I've installed hobbit-client on a server, and added: # CLIENT:fqdn.example.com to it's host line in bb-hosts, and added: HOST=fqdn.example.com before the default configuration in hobbit-clinets.cfg, but no joy. Does anyone know what else I need to do for those tests to register?

  • Deleting large no of files on linux eats up CPU

    - by Sanjay
I generate more than 50GB of cache files on my RHEL server (and typical file size is 200kb so no of files is huge). When I try to delete these files it takes 8-10 hours. However, the bigger issue is that the system load goes to critical for these 8-10 hours. Is there anyway where I can keep the system load under control during the deletion. I tried using nice -n19 rm -rf * but that doesn't help in system load. P.S. I asked the same question on superuser.com but didn't get a good enough answer so trying here.

  • CPU fan twitching phase leds blinking - computer won't boot

    - by SooX
I have a big problem that I got today. Yesterday computer was "on" normally, I went to sleep without shutting it down. When I woke up, I heard a strange sound and was unable to bring it up from hibernate. I unplugged the PSU. When I plugged the PSU back in, the sound came back. When I opened the case, I saw the fan "twitching" like it is about to start and fan LEDs were blinking. Also, motherboard LEDs were blinking in the same pattern - the first green one has more of luminosity then others. When I cut down the power with 0/1 button on PSU, the fans continue to make sounds like the machine is trying to boot before the capacitors run out and the power dies. Does anyone have a clue what to do? I tried disassembling everything but that doesn't work. I will try with friend's PSU later today.

  • Gateway MX6440 CPU Upgrade

    - by BPugh
I have received an a Gateway MX6440 laptop as a freebie, but I'm interested in upgrading its AMD Turion 64 ML-32 (socket 754) to something faster (and more cache). I know the range of processors that could work based on the family list in Wikipedia. However, this computer has the stock bios, and any updates I haven't applied from Gateway doesn't specify processor support. I'm looking to go to at least a 2.2 (ML-40). Has anybody upgraded the processor in this model or other in the series success or failure and do you happen to have any guides handy for working with the heat sink? Any Googling I have done keeps hitting RAM marketers. Update Computer died before I had a chance to try this out.

  • Home Server: cpu virtualisation, what to choose?

    - by Huygens
I'm looking for virtualisation solutions for storage and OS for a home server. A sort of private cloud where I manage the storage space independently of the VM one. This question focus on VM (or compute instance) management and what would best suit my needs. (I have another question related to the storage management). My use cases are: A backup server: rsync and other services running. A personal cloud server: a kind of owned dropbox system, à la ownCloud. " users foreseen. A media server: streaming videos and displaying photos. Here my environement and wishes: Server: HP Proliant MicroServer with 8 GB RAM (AMD Turion dual core with AMD-V technology) OS types: only Linux (perhaps a *BSD VM in the future) Linux distributions do not matter, I'm familiar with RHEL, Fedora, Suse, Ubuntu, but any other recommandation will be fine 2-3 VMs foreseen: backup server, owncloud server and media server (optional). Those are only servers, so no graphical console needed (I don't need VirtualBox) By VM I mean a virtualised environment like KVM, Xen, etc. or a compute instance like with OpenStack storage should be "virtualised/cloudified" see my other question. VM should be able to be migrated to another server in the future if performance cannot be fullfilled anymore by the current server It does not matter if installation of such setup is complicated as long as management tools allow for easy maintenance I don't have Windows at home, so solution should be Linux friendly and would be nice to be web based. But native apps are OK too. System should be easy to enhance: by adding a new server to migate some of the VMs to it. So it's really a kind of private cloud on which I could run some Linux OS. I would prefer free (libre, as in a free speach) and open source tools. But it does not have to be free as in a free beer. So Xen, KVM, VitualBox or OpenStack? What would you recommend?

  • A lots of Apache processes are using my CPU uses always more than 70%

    - by Barkat Ullah
I am running a plesk panel in 1and1. I have 120 sites running and all are using pligg cms, each site has 600 visitors per day. Please see the details of my server below: HDD-1000GB RAM-16GB Processor-6 Core I always see a lot of apache processes running in my # top view, so the server seems overloaded. If I can reduce the amount apache processes I think the server will be ok. But I don't know why too many apache processes are running. Please see the link below for the screenshot of my # top view: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26967109/%23Top-2.jpg Sometimes I saw too many connection error in my plesk control panel, so I added the below line in my [mysqld] section: set-variable=max_connections=416 But I didn't find a solution yet. I have also added maxclients and serverlimit 416 in the config /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf But no solution yet. I am researching around more than 7 days but don't get any solution. Please help me to solve the problem. In peak hours my sites are taking too much time to load, but off-peak hour it is ok. Please help me to find out the actual problem.

  • Suggested benchmark for testing CPU footprint of antivirus software

    - by Alex Chernavsky
Our organization is currently running Symantec Corporate Antivirus, which is rumored to be a big resource hog. I know that we do have a lot of older machines that are running slow. Our PCs are all running Windows XP Pro and are used only for business applications (mostly Microsoft Office), e-mail, and web surfing. They're not used for gaming (one would hope not, anyway). I'd like to take one of the old PCs and do a speed benchmark test while it's running Symantec AV, then another test with no antivirus, and a third test with ESET NOD32. As I said, I don't care much about graphics performance. What would be an appropriate benchmarking program program to use? Freeware is best, of course. Thank you for considering my question.

  • CPU cores and workers / maxservers

    - by user80666
I'm trying to optimize my apache and nginx installations and have been looking for information on how to setup correct number or min/max servers and connections in Apache and worker processes in Nginx. I was wondering whether or not Apache and Nginx take advantage of multy core processors and how to set configuration in Apache and Nginx? For example, lets say I have a 4 core processor, should I set workers to 4 in nginx? what should I set spare server in apache to?

  • CPU Configuration Issue for 2 Servers (Server 2008 R2)

    - by Bill Moreland
I have 2 servers running the exact same Classic ASP code with Access DBs (yes, not ideal, but it is what it is, for now). 1) Xeon 5520 @ 2.27 GHz (6 GB Memory) 2) Xeon E5-2620 @ 2.00 GHz (2 processors, 32 GB Memory) For most pages the newer E5-2620 processes the pages between 10-15% faster. On pages requiring heavy and/or multiple complicated access stored procedures (queries) the older 5520 does a much better job. I believe the servers are configured nearly identically. My question: is it possible that the newer, multi-processor server is not as good at handling Classic ASP as the older single processor? Is there a configuration difference that needs to be in place that I'm missing since I'm shooting for identical implementations?

  • How to make one CPU to be used simulataneously be three different users

    - by beginning_steps
As a bootstrapping start-up we are thinking of saving on the IT hardware cost by making more use of the hardware that we have. As a solopreneur I have a laptop config : intel core2duo processor, 3Gb RAM and 250 GB RAM. Now we are planning to increase our team to 3 members. Will like your suggestions on the nest cost-effective step that I can take so that I can use the computing power of the existing laptop to act as a kind of server and then buy to more monitors where the new recruits can do the daily work on and they need to have different login id and access and they dont need access to all the files/applications as are available in my laptop. We use internet intensively to do our day to day activity. Please share you experience, whether you think this is a good ploy or there is any other more effective way of achieving the same result.

Q is: is it obvious where the bottleneck will be? Would I ever need 24GB of RAM, even with lots of concurrent users?

  • C socket programming: select() is returning 0 despite messages sent from server

    - by Fantastic Fourier
    Hey all, I'm using select() to recv() messages from server, using TCP/IP. When I send() messages from the server, it returns a reasonable number of bytes, saying it's sent successful. And it does get to the client successfully when I use while loop to just recv(). Everything is fine and dandy. while(1) recv() // obviously pseudocode However, when I try to use select(), select() returns 0 from timeout (which is set to 1 second) and for the life of me I cannot figure out why it doesn't see the messages sent from the server. I should also mention that when the server disconnects, select() doesn't see that either, where as if I were to use recv(), it would return 0 to indicate that the connection using the socket has been closed. Any inputs or thoughts are deeply appreciated. #include <arpa/inet.h> #include <errno.h> #include <fcntl.h> #include <netdb.h> #include <netinet/in.h> #include <pthread.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string.h> #include <strings.h> #include <sys/select.h> #include <sys/socket.h> #include <sys/time.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <time.h> #include <unistd.h> #define SERVER_PORT 10000 #define MAX_CONNECTION 20 #define MAX_MSG 50 struct client { char c_name[MAX_MSG]; char g_name[MAX_MSG]; int csock; int host; // 0 = not host of a multicast group struct sockaddr_in client_address; struct client * next_host; struct client * next_client; }; struct fd_info { char c_name[MAX_MSG]; int socks_inuse[MAX_CONNECTION]; int sock_fd, max_fd; int exit; struct client * c_sys; struct sockaddr_in c_address[MAX_CONNECTION]; struct sockaddr_in server_address; struct sockaddr_in client_address; fd_set read_set; }; struct message { char c_name[MAX_MSG]; char g_name[MAX_MSG]; char _command[3][MAX_MSG]; char _payload[MAX_MSG]; struct sockaddr_in client_address; struct client peer; }; int main(int argc, char * argv[]) { char * host; char * temp; int i, sockfd; int msg_len, rv, ready; int connection, management, socketread; int sockfds[MAX_CONNECTION]; // for three threads that handle new connections, user inputs and select() for sockets pthread_t connection_handler, manager, socket_reader; struct sockaddr_in server_address, client_address; struct hostent * hserver, cserver; struct timeval timeout; struct message msg; struct fd_info info; info.exit = 0; // exit information: if exit = 1, threads quit info.c_sys = NULL; // looking up from the host database if (argc == 3) { host = argv[1]; // server address strncpy(info.c_name, argv[2], strlen(argv[2])); // client name } else { printf("plz read the manual, kthxbai\n"); exit(1); } printf("host is %s and hp is %p\n", host, hserver); hserver = gethostbyname(host); if (hserver) { printf("host found: %s\n", hserver->h_name ); } else { printf("host not found\n"); exit(1); } // setting up address and port structure information on serverside bzero((char * ) &server_address, sizeof(server_address)); // copy zeroes into string server_address.sin_family = AF_INET; memcpy(&server_address.sin_addr, hserver->h_addr, hserver->h_length); server_address.sin_port = htons(SERVER_PORT); bzero((char * ) &client_address, sizeof(client_address)); // copy zeroes into string client_address.sin_family = AF_INET; client_address.sin_addr.s_addr = htonl(INADDR_ANY); client_address.sin_port = htons(SERVER_PORT); // opening up socket sockfd = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, 0); if (sockfd < 0) exit(1); else { printf("socket is opened: %i \n", sockfd); info.sock_fd = sockfd; } // sets up time out option for the bound socket timeout.tv_sec = 1; // seconds timeout.tv_usec = 0; // micro seconds ( 0.5 seconds) setsockopt(sockfd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_RCVTIMEO, &timeout, sizeof(struct timeval)); // binding socket to a port rv = bind(sockfd, (struct sockaddr *) &client_address, sizeof(client_address)); if (rv < 0) { printf("MAIN: ERROR bind() %i: %s\n", errno, strerror(errno)); exit(1); } else printf("socket is bound\n"); printf("MAIN: %li \n", client_address.sin_addr.s_addr); // connecting rv = connect(sockfd, (struct sockaddr *) &server_address, sizeof(server_address)); info.server_address = server_address; info.client_address = client_address; info.sock_fd = sockfd; info.max_fd = sockfd; printf("rv = %i\n", rv); if (rv < 0) { printf("MAIN: ERROR connect() %i: %s\n", errno, strerror(errno)); exit(1); } else printf("connected\n"); fd_set readset; FD_ZERO(&readset); FD_ZERO(&info.read_set); FD_SET(info.sock_fd, &info.read_set); while(1) { readset = info.read_set; printf("MAIN: %i \n", readset); ready = select((info.max_fd)+1, &readset, NULL, NULL, &timeout); if(ready == -1) { sleep(2); printf("TEST: MAIN: ready = -1. %s \n", strerror(errno)); } else if (ready == 0) { sleep(2); printf("TEST: MAIN: ready = 0. %s \n", strerror(errno)); } else if (ready > 0) { printf("TEST: MAIN: ready = %i. %s at socket %i \n", ready, strerror(errno), i); for(i = 0; i < ((info.max_fd)+1); i++) { if(FD_ISSET(i, &readset)) { rv = recv(sockfd, &msg, 500, 0); if(rv < 0) continue; else if(rv > 0) printf("MAIN: TEST: %s %s \n", msg._command[0], msg._payload); else if (rv == 0) { sleep(3); printf("MAIN: TEST: SOCKET CLOSEDDDDDD \n"); } FD_CLR(i, &readset); } } } info.read_set = readset; } // close connection close(sockfd); printf("socket closed.   • Removing Little Snitch completely (Mac OS X Snow Leopard)

  • Why does my computer crash randomly?

    - by Donavon Decker
The other day I went out to my van to get my Tower and when I opened the trunk it fell out. I brought it into the house and opened it, and everything looked ok. When I started it up, about 1-3 minutes afterwards it would crash. It did this over and over until I reseated the cooler. Everything seemed normal again, until after about 10 minutes of gameplay (any game), it would crash. I reseated my GPU + reinstalled the drivers, however I still get the same error. A while back, I'd check my 'Windows Rating' periodically, and all of them were in the '6.0-6.9' range except for my hard disk usage (always been like that [not relative]). Today I went in and looked, and my Processor and Memory was rated 5.4. I reseated my cpu and my memory, refreshed the windows rating, and then my processor and memory went from 5.4, to 5.1. A few minutes ago I reseated them once again, and now it's back to 5.4. Note: Not sure if this is relevant to the issue, but I updated my bios earlier today I honestly have no idea what the issue is, but I'm getting aggravated at the problem. Here are some images which contain images of my specifications: i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj623/donxdeck/1_zps09f0607c.jpg i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj623/donxdeck/4_zps381cd00a.jpg i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj623/donxdeck/3_zps54bba720.jpg i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj623/donxdeck/2_zps945d3d72.jpg Thanks for the help

  • fail2ban log parsing too slow on Raspberry Pi - options? [migrated]

    - by Gordon Morehouse
I'm running fail2ban on a Raspberry Pi at 950MHz which I cannot overclock further. The Pi is occasionally subject to SYN floods on particular ports. I've set up iptables to throttle the rate of SYNs on the port of interest; when the throttle limits are exceeded, hosts which send SYNs are dropped into the REJECT chain and the particular SYN packet which exceeded the limit is logged. fail2ban then watches for these logged SYNs and, after seeing a few, temporarily bans the host for a short time (this is a transient issue in the app I'm working with). The problem is that the SYN floods can occasionally reach rates which are too fast for fail2ban to keep up with; I'll see 20-40 log messages per second, and eventually fail2ban falls behind and becomes ineffective. To add insult to injury, it continues consuming a LOT of CPU as it tries to catch up. I have verified that DROP chained packets from hosts already banned by fail2ban are not logged, and thus do not add to its load. What are my options here? I have a few ideas, but no clear path forward. Could I make the log-parse regex "easier" so it takes fewer cycles? Would using iptables --log-prefix to put a token near the start of the log message, and/or otherwise simplifying/altering the fail2ban regex help? Here is the current fail2ban config line containing a regex: failregex = kernel:.*?SRC=(?:::f{4,6}:)?(?P<host>[\w\-.^_]+) DST.*?SYN Is there a faster way for fail2ban to watch for the packets exceeding the limits than parsing kern.log? Could fail2ban be run under PyPy instead of CPython with minimal nonstandard wizardry (the OS is Raspbian 7, so, mostly Debian 7)? Is there something better than fail2ban that I could use to watch for the packets which exceed the SYN limits, and after N exceeds in X seconds, temporarily put the offending IP into the iptables DROP bucket, and take it out when the ban timer expires? Again, I'd vastly prefer a solution that uses as much software available in Debian as possible, though I can build Debian packages in a pinch.

  • does my machine configuration make sense?

i couldn't think of a better place to ask this question, so here it goes. we're putting together a dedicated server for a website that will initially host the web server and the mysql database. as the website grows, we'll move the database to a different server and this machine will eventually only server the actual website. so the question is ...does my configuration look okay? it's the first time i'm building a server from scratch so i want to make sure i don't combine components that don't fit or something. things like ..do the drives i picked work for the hot swap ..etc. what do you guys think? am i good to go with this configuration? :) Chassis: Supermicro SuperServer 6016T-MTHF (6x DDR3 SDRAM - ECC DIMM 240-pin, 2x LGA1366 Socket, Power Provided: 600 Watt, 4 (free) x hot-swap - 3.5") CPU: Intel BX80614E5620 Xeon E5620 Processor - 4 Core, 2.40GHz, LGA 1366, 5.86GT/s QPI 12MB Cache, 64-Bit, 80W, HyperThreading Memory: Crucial CT51272BB1339 4GB PC10600 DDR3 Memory - 1333MHz, ECC, Registered, 1x4096MB (possibly 3 or 4 of them) Hard Drives: Western Digital WD2002FAEX Caviar Black Hard Drive - 2TB, 3.5", SATA 6Gbps, 7200 RPM, 64MB (possibly 2 or 3). thank you very much for any professional advice :)

Processor: Intel i5 4430 4-Core 4x3Ghz Motherboard: msi h87-g41 Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX760 Power supply: eps-750 cm RAM: 8GB I bought a new assembled gaming PC which worked fine for a few days. Then it started rebooting without warning. After it restarts windows 7 gives me an bbc 116 error code. Apparently it's something to do with my video card, either it overheating or wrong drivers. I've installed the latest driver from Nvidia for my graphics card. Since it's brand new it can't be dust, I'm running it with its lid open to see if the problem persists. I'm also running prime95 now to see if it tells me anything else. Using core temp it tells me that my CPU reaches up to 95° celsius with the blend stress test from prime95. Aaaand it just peaked to 100°. Of course it doesn't reach these temperatures at all while idle/gaming. I'm gonna let prime95 run for a night and to see what happens. Until then does anyone know what I should do next?

  • Linux Scheduler (not using all cores on multi-core machine) RHEL6

    - by User512
    I'm seeing strange behavior on one of my servers (running RHEL 6). There seems to be something wrong with the scheduler. Here's the test program I'm using: #include <stdio.h> #include <unistd.h> #include <stdlib.h> void RunClient(int i) { printf("Starting client %d\n", i); while (true) { } } int main(int argc, char** argv) { for (int i = 0; i < 4; ++i) { pid_t p_id = fork(); if (p_id == -1) { perror("fork"); } else if (p_id == 0) { RunClient(i); exit(0); } } return 0; } This machine has a lot more than 4 cores so we'd expect all processes to be running at 100%. When I check on top, the cpu usage varies. Sometimes it's split (100%, 33%, 33%, 33%), other times it's split (100%, 100%, 50%, 50%). When I try this test on another server of ours (running RHEL 5), there are no issues (it's 100%, 100%, 100%, 100%) as expected. What's causing this and how can I fix it? Thanks

  • 5 year old server upgrade

    - by rizzo0917
I am looking to upgrade a server for a web app. Currently the application is running very sluggish. We've made some adjustments to mysql (that's another issue in itself) and made some adjustments so that heaviest quires get run on a copy of the database on another server was have as a backup, however this will not last that much longer and we are looking to upgrade. Currently the servers CPUs are (4) Intel(R) XEON(TM) CPU 2.00GHz, with 1 gig of ram. The database is 442.5 MiB, with about 1,743,808 records. There are two parts of the program, the one, side a, inserts and updates most of the data. Side b, reads the data and does some minor updates. Currently our biggest day for side a are 800 users (of 40,000 users all year) imputing the system. And our Side b is currently unknown, however we have a total of 1000 clients. The system is most likely going to cap out at 5000 side b clients, with about a year 300,000 side a users. The current database is 5 years old, so we can most likely expect the database to grow pretty rapidly, possibly double each year (which we can most likely archive older records if it comes to that). So with that being said, should we get a server for each side of the app, side a being the master, side b being the slave, any updates made on side b are router to side a. So the question is should i get 2 of these or 1. 2 x Intel Nehalem Xeon E5520 2.26Ghz (8 Cores) 12GB DDRIII Memory 500GB SATAII HDD 100Mbps Port Speed And Naturally I would need to have a redundant backup so it could potentially be 4 of them.

  • New i7 is slower than old Core 2 Duo? Why? (BIOS programming)

    - by DrChase
I've always wondered why the companies who make BIOS' either have terrible engineering psychologists or none at all. But without wasting your time further with random speculative questions, my real question is as follows: Why does my new computer run slower than my old computer? Old Computer: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 3.0 Ghz (stock) 4GB OCZ DDR2 800 RAM Wolfdale E8400 mb nVidia GeForce 8600 GT New Computer: Intel Core i7 920 @ ~3.2 Ghz 6 GB OCZ DDR3 1066 RAM EVGA x58 SLI LE motherboard nVidia GeForce GTX 275 Vista x64 Home Premium on both. "Run slower" is defined as: - poorer FPS performance in the same games, applications - takes longer to start up - general desktop usage (checking email, opening up files, running exe's) is noticeably slower At first I thought I must've not set something up in the BIOS or something. But I have no idea how to set anything in the bios except for "Dummy O.C.", which brought me to ~3.2 Ghz. But beyond that I have no idea. I've been reading stuff about "ram timing" and voltages and the like but I really have no idea about that stuff. I'm a psychologist who has a basic understanding in building his own computers, not a computer scientist. Can someone give me some wisdom that might guide me to the reason my new computer is worse than my older one? I'm sorry if this is a bad question, or not appropriate to SO. I'm just pretty frustrated now and you all have helped me in the past so I figured I'd give it a shot. Thanks for your time.
