• Using www-data through SSH

  For development purposes I'm using www-data (on an ubuntu 11.10 server) to ssh in and fire git commands and basic stuff against the webroot. I don't have things like command history, coloring, etc like I do when I ssh in as any other user, so I'm curious how to get this working. I'm assuming I need a `.bashrc' file, but I'm not sure what to include or (more importantly since I could just copy the one from another user) where it goes.

• Should I keep investing into data structures and algorithms?

  These days, I'm investing heavily in data structures and algorithms and trying to solve some programming puzzles. I'm trying to code and solve with Java and Clojure. Am I wasting my time? should I invest more in technologies and frameworks that I already know in order to gain deeper knowledge (the ins and the outs) and be able to code with them more quickly? By studying data structures and algorithms, am I going to become a better programmer or those subjects are only important during college years?

  Hi all, I had a Windows Home server machine that crashed. Before doing anything I decided to get data out of it. So I took the hard drive and connected it to Windows7 pc. What I get is that I cannot access almost any file! I do see directory structure, I can open small files like .txt and .ini but bigger files like .iso and video - no go. Same goes for Ubuntu and OS X - I can see files and even copy them - but they are corrupted. Any ideas for what the problem is?

• PHP ODBC MDB Access on a Cloud Server

  Hey! Hopefully quick question.... I have a .MDB file stored on my webserver and I'm trying to connect to it. I have no way of "registering" it with a name in ODBC. • Easiest way to decrypt PGP-encrypted files from VBA (MS Access)

  I need to write code that picks up PGP-encrypted files from an FTP location and processes them. The files will be encrypted with my public key (not that I have one yet). Obviously, I need a PGP library that I can use from within Microsoft Access. Can you recommend one that is easy to use? I'm looking for something that doesn't require a huge amount of PKI knowledge. Ideally, something that will easily generate the one-off private/public key pair, and then have a simple routine for decryption.

  There's no obvious entry point for implementing a custom provider for an ADO.NET Data Service using IDataServiceMetadataProvider, and then telling a Data Service to use that provider. Has anyone had any luck in this area? I've tried implementing this interface on my Data Source class, but none of my breakpoints are hit. There is also no (obvious) way to set the provider from the Data Service's DataServiceConfiguration parameter passed in to the InitializeService function. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Whenever you call a method that implicitly uses it, it fails with a NotSupportedException, that can be resolved with a configuration switch that makes it fall back to the old behavior. We have a common library that's used in both .NET 3.5 and .NET 4, so we need to be able to tell whether or not we should use the CAS method. For example, in .NET 3.5 I should call: Assembly.Load(string, Evidence); Whereas in .NET 4 I want to call Assembly.Load(string); Calling Load(string, Evidence) throws a NotSupportedException. • How to determine MS Access field size via OleDb

  The existing application is in C#. During startup the application calls a virtual method to make changes to the database (for example a new revision may need to calculate a new field or something). An open OleDb connection is passed into the method. I need to change a field width. The ALTER TABLE statement is working fine. But I would like to avoid executing the ALTER TABLE statement if the field is already the appropriate size. Is there a way to determine the size of an MS Access field using the same OleDb connection?

• SQL code to insert multiple rows in ms-access table

  I'm trying to speed up my code and the bottleneck seems to be the individual insert statements to a Jet MDB from outside Access via ODBC. I need to insert 100 rows at a time and have to repeat that many times. It is possible to insert multiple rows in a table with SQL code? Here is some stuff that I tried but neither of them worked. Any suggestions? • MS Access Draw line around detail section that can grow

  This really shouldn't be hard, I just can't figure out how to do it. I am making a proposal report that needs to have a border around it. The problem is to get the vertical lines on the side. I can't figure out how to get a line to grow and shrink based on the height of the detail section. I have used Crystal reports and sure wish Microsoft would learn a few things in regards to MS Access report writing! I am very comfortable with VBA so have no fears there. :-) Thanks, Jeff

  Hi folks, I'm helping out a business by providing an Access DB to manage requests of various types. As they are a construction company, they have one machine in an 'office' on the building site, plus 3 based in their main office. The machine on site has no internet connectivity. Is there any (reasonably simple) way to synchronise these databases every so often? I realise the tables could be merged, but each has an autoincrement field which must be synced between instances (i.e. when merging two tables the autoincrement should be reassigned based on the combination of records). • Can't access web service when connected to the network :: HTTP 407

  Hi All, I have a console application that communicates with a web service. Both of them are on the same machine. When I am accessing the web service with the LAN disabled, it connects without a problem. But if the LAN is enabled and connected to our office network, I receive this error: "HTTP 407 Proxy Authentication required - The ISA Server requires authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy service is denied." We've been hunting the source of the problem for three days now. We have tried everything that we can think of. Any ideas what's causing the problem? Additional notes: - The machine is in a Workgroup setup but with DNS suffix (computer.local). When accessing the web service, we type the address as "http://machine.computer.local/service.asmx" I talked to the IT guys and they said that we don't have an ISA server installed There is no "proxy" set in IE. The machine is in mint condition.

  I am newbie to Java. I have some design questions. Say I have a crawler application, that does the following: 1. Crawls a url and gets its content 2. Parses the contents 3. Displays the contents How do you decide between implementing a function or a class? -- Should the parser be a function of the crawler class, or should it be a class in itself, so it can be used by other applications as well? -- If it should be a class, should it be protected or public class? How do you decide between implementing a public or protected class? -- If I had to create a class to generate stats from the parsed contents for eg, should that class be protected (so only the crawler class can access it) or should it be public? • MS Access Print Report using VBA

  I have a very VBA intensive report. When I preview it everything is great but when I print it after previewing things go wacky. I have spent many hours narrowing down the possibilities and I have conclude with a certain level of confidence that it is a but in MS Access. Up to this point my method for printing reports was to open the report using docmd.openreport "report". I then use the docmd.printout command so that I can set the page range, collation etc. Is there a way to print a report directly and still be able to set options like page rage, collate etc without doing a preview first? • Change a subform's recordsource from another subform in Access

  I am using MS Access 2003 and I have a form with two subforms (subform1 and subform2) which are not nested. They both display tabular data on them so they cannot be nested. I would like to change the recordsource on subform2 based on a value in the current record on subform1. I have tried to put the code in the oncurrent event of subform1 but I cannot seem to refer to the recordsource in subform2 from subform1. From subform1 I have tried me.parent!subform2.form.recordsource but I get a runtime error ‘2455’ You have entered an expression that has an invalid reference to the property form/report. Any ideas?

• JQuery Datatable Question: Centering column data after data insertion

  I have a data table that is initially empty and is populated after a particular Javascript call. After the data is inserted into the table, I'd like to center all of the data in one of the columns. I tried specifying this at the initialization step in this way: dTable = $('#dt').datatable({ 'aoColumns': [ null, null, { "sClass" : "center" }] }); The data in the third column was not centered after the insertions were complete. I tried modifying aoColumns after the insertions and redrawing the table as well: dTable.fnSettings().aoColumns[2].sClass = "center"; dTable.fnDraw(); This did not work either. So my question is simply how should I go about telling the data table to center the data in the third column? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Chris

  I want to use document.createDocumentFragment() to create an optimized collection of HTML elements that contain ".data" coming from jQuery (v 1.4.2), but I'm kind of stuck on how to get the data to surface from the HTML elements. I suspect it's probably something with .cloneNode() not carrying over the data when the element is appended to the documentFragment. Sometimes there are tons of rows so I want to keep things pretty optimized, speed-wise. Thanks!

  I have an Access database for a media rental company which includes the following tables, among others; LOAN: customer_id (pk), loan_datetimeLeant (pk), loan_dateReturned (pk) LOAN_ITEMS: customer_id (pk), loan_datetimeLeant (pk), item_id (pk), loanItem_cost ITEM: item_id (pk), product_id, item_availability PRODUCT: product_id (pk), product_name, product_type MEDIA_COST: product_type (pk), product_cost So basically the 'product type' (DVD, VHS etc) determines the cost. The 'product id' determines what movie, platform etc each item is. My question is: When creating a form for the Loan_Items table, how can I populate the loanItem_cost field (so it is stored) whenever a new Loan_Item record is added? I need to store it as the cost of the item (product_cost) may change over time and I'd like to record what the customer paid at the time the loan was made. Thanks in advance

• Workflow for statistical analysis and report writing

  Does anyone have any wisdom on workflows for data analysis related to custom report writing? The use-case is basically this: Client commissions a report that uses data analysis, e.g. a population estimate and related maps for a water district. The analyst downloads some data, munges the data and saves the result (e.g. adding a column for population per unit, or subsetting the data based on district boundaries). The analyst analyzes the data created in (2), gets close to her goal, but sees that needs more data and so goes back to (1). Rinse repeat until the tables and graphics meet QA/QC and satisfy the client. Write report incorporating tables and graphics. Next year, the happy client comes back and wants an update. This should be as simple as updating the upstream data by a new download (e.g. get the building permits from the last year), and pressing a "RECALCULATE" button, unless specifications change. At the moment, I just start a directory and ad-hoc it the best I can. I would like a more systematic approach, so I am hoping someone has figured this out... I use a mix of spreadsheets, SQL, ARCGIS, R, and Unix tools. Thanks! PS: Below is a basic Makefile that checks for dependencies on various intermediate datasets (w/ ".RData" suffix) and scripts (".R" suffix). Make uses timestamps to check dependencies, so if you 'touch ss07por.csv', it will see that this file is newer than all the files / targets that depend on it, and execute the given scripts in order to update them accordingly. This is still a work in progress, including a step for putting into SQL database, and a step for a templating language like sweave. Note that Make relies on tabs in its syntax, so read the manual before cutting and pasting. • MS-Access VBA: form_error vs on error

  I am trying to set up error handling for a MS-Access application. The standard method to do this seems to be with an On Error statement in each subroutine/function. It seems simpler to me to use the Form_Error function to catch all the runtime errors in that form as opposed to an On Error statement for each sub/function called by an event on that form. (Obviously, for code in modules, there is no Form_Error function and therefore the only method is the On Error statement) What are the pros and cons of using On Error vs Form_Error?
