  • Reconnoiter - Anyone using it?

    Reconnoiter is a new tool in the world of monitoring. It is not only a trending tool but also alerting/fault detection one. In my particular case, I reckon that it's in the trending capacities that Reconnoiter has a very huge potential. One of the premises Recoinnoter is built upon is that RRDTool large installations are very inneficient regarding I/O and I think this is RRDTool major problem. One of the things that would make me change from Cacti is, obviously, the cost of change and the learning curve. So, any of you has experience with Reconnoiter? How's the learning curve? Was it difficult to move from RRDTool frontend applications (Cacti, Munin, Ganglia) to Reconnoiter? I'm looking forward to read your opinions.

  • zabbix monitoring mysql database

    I have a server running multiple instances of mysql and also has the zabbix-agent running. In zabbix_agentd.conf i have specified: UserParameter=multi.mysql[*],mysqladmin --socket=$1 -uzabbixagent extended-status 2>/dev/null | awk '/ $3 /{print $$4}' where $1 is the socket instance. From the zabbix server i can run the test successfully. zabbix_get -s ip_of_server -k multi.mysql[/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock] and it returns all the values However the zabbix item/trigger does not generate the graphs, I have created a MACRO for $1 which is the socket location {$MYSQL_SOCKET1} = '/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock' and i use this key in items to poll the value multi.mysql[{$MYSQL_SOCKET1},Bytes_sent] LOGS: this is what i get on the logs: 3360:20120214:144716.278 item [multi.mysql['/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock',Bytes_received]] error: Special characters '\'"`*?[]{}~$!&;()<>|#@' are not allowed in the parameters 3360:20120214:144716.372 item [multi.mysql['/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock',Bytes_sent]] error: Special characters '\'"`*?[]{}~$!&;()<>|#@' are not allowed in the parameters Any ideas where the problem could be? FIXED {$MYSQL_SOCKET1} = /var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock i removed the single quotes from the line and it worked...

  • SBSMonitoring.mdf reached limit

    I have SBS 08 Standart. I have some Error in my Event Viewer with MSSQL$SBSMONITORING Event id 1105, 1827: Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.EventLog'.'PK_EventLog' in database 'SBSMonitoring' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 4096 MB per database. I tried to schrink the database, worked for SBSMonitoring_log.LDF but nothing for the SBSMonitoring.mdf, still 4096MB. I don't know how to reinstall the monitoring. Thanks for your help.

  • Monitoring/logging a malfunctioning internet connection

    I have a mysterious internet connection problem: Every 15-20 minutes, the connection will become very slow, and take 2-3 minutes for anything to load. I've had a technician from the ISP over here to test the hardware, and everything is in pristine condition. They have no other explanation than a configuration error on my machine, a possibility I can exclude 90% because I'm experiencing the same problems with another machine. I will have to monitor the situation now, and I would like to run a program that logs when internet connections become slow. I thought about putting something together using at and wget. Does anybody know of some other tool for this that does this out of the box - maybe something with an adjustable request frequency, logging connection speeds etc.?

  • Spawn phone call from EC2 alerts

    I have a system setup on AWS/EC2, it currently is using their CloudWatch alert system. The problem is this sends just to email, when ideally I would like this to be making a phone call and/or sending text messages to certain phone numbers when an alert fires (Note that I do not need the phone call to actually say anything, just call the person). We are trying to solve the problem that Amazon alerts are only useful if people are checking their email, which isnt always the case because all server problems love to happen at 4am on saturday... Please respond with any possible solutions/ideas, ideally I do not want to implement an entire monitoring system (IE: Nagios) on top of everything to handle this.

  • External USB disk drive cannot be remounted in Windows XP

    I have Maxtor Basics Desktop 1TB external USB drive connected to Windows XP. The dirve's firmware puts it to sleep after 10-20 min of inactivity and then the drive cannot be mounted unless I reset it via power connector. While in sleep mode I can see the device in the Device Manager under both Disk drives and USB sections. Is there a way to get the drive out of sleep mode without hard reset? Thanks

  • What's the best way to monitor a large number of application pools in IIS7?

    Some background first - We're running IIS 7 on Windows 2008. We're running around 250 websites per server with each site in it's own application pool. I need a way to monitor each application pool for crashes and hangs and to send an email alert if an application pool is unresponsive for more than say 2 minutes. I thought about having a virtual directory mapped into each site with an ASP.NET page that we could poll via our existing monitoring system (HostMonitor). Does anyone else have experience in this area?

  • Munin - apache_watch_ plugin, does not show any data in the graphs that shows activity for per vhosts

    I am using Munin for monitoring my server. I installed the apache_watch_ plugin so that i could see apache related activity. The graphs for apache_accesses, apache_processes and apache_volume work fine. But the graphs for Apache Documents served, Apache Input/output (bytes), Apache Requests don't show any activity in the graph. The important thing is that these graphs that don't show anything are supposed to show the data divided per vhosts. I am on Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (Lucid Lynx) and the munin version is 1.4.4. One thing that I think may be the cause for issue is that I have a separate config file for every vhost, which are included in the main config. But I can't really figure out any solution. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

  • Web page change monitoring for Mac OS X

    There is a site that I need to monitor for changes and pop an alarm if the change is over a certain threshold. Ideally it would use Growl to pop the notification but I'm open to alternatives. If there is an application out there that does this for purchase, I'll just buy it. If not, pointers to any Linux / Java / other recompilables that I could just add Growl support to would be very helpful!

  • USB stick appearing as hard disk drive, not removable storage device

    I just plugged in a very simple 1GB USB stick from the office in hopes of making it a Fedora Live USB stick. For that to work, I need a removable storage device, or else it won't appear in LiveUSB Creator's list. Explorer lists my USB stick as a hard disk: LiveUSB Creator indeed doesn't show it in the device list: Is there any way of forcing Windows to see the stick as a removable storage device?

  • Best filesystem choices for NFS storing VMware disk images

    Currently we use an iSCSI SAN as storage for several VMware ESXi servers. I am investigating the use of an NFS target on a Linux server for additional virtual machines. I am also open to the idea of using an alternative operating system (like OpenSolaris) if it will provide significant advantages. What Linux-based filesystem favours very large contiguous files (like VMware's disk images)? Alternatively, how have people found ZFS on OpenSolaris for this kind of workload?

We want to ignore some of them so that the report is all green and any alert will stand out. For example, we want to ignore the alert regarding the firewall being off on the server. I created an item using the following details: Host: Zabbix server Description: logger_test Type: Zabbix agent (active) Key: log[/tmp/scribetest/test3/test3_current,error,,100] Type of Infromation: Log Update interval (in sec): 1 sec Keep history (in days): 90 Status: Active Applications: Log files I created a trigger and attached it with the item logger_test using the following details: Name: logger_test_trigger Expression: {Zabbix server:log[/tmp/scribetest/test3/test3_current,error,,100].str(error)}=1 Severity: disaster The above settings works fine for the first time but next time the trigger shows ZBX_NOTSUPPORTED and after that item also shows "not supported" message. Can you please tell me if anything I am doing wrong here ?

  • How much packet loss is normal?

    I started monitoring our network using SmokePing. Users occasionally complain about bad network connections, but the problems went away after some minutes usually. I now wanted to get some more quantitative information about those problems. SmokePing regularly pings servers inside our network, in a connected network and outside hosts. I only have a limited amount of control over our internal network and none at all for the connection to the outside and to the second network. I now see quite often (2-4 times a day) that packets to the second network and the outside are dropped. Most of the times it is 1-2 packets out of 20, sometimes more. Inside our internal network no packets are dropped. Is this an expected amount of packet loss, or does it indicate that something is wrong? I'm mainly wondering if I should bother the university IT department about it, or if I should just accept it as it is.

  • AppFabric &ndash; where are all the monitoring events?

    When you’ve just gone through a setup of AppFabric and you’ve got some WF/WCF things happening, if you start looking at the Dashboard and you see nothing, it might be as simple as restarting SQL Agent. I generally don’t reboot my system for several days and after installing AppFabric the SQL Agent jobs didn’t start firing right away.  Yes, even running a boot to VHD, you can still put the machine to sleep (just logoff and click on Sleep)… So, after spending time looking through the SQL monitoring DB that AppFabric was configured to use, I saw a bunch of records in the [AppFabric_Monitoring].[dbo].[ASStagingTable] table.  This table is the stopping point before the SQL Agent job (or Service Broker in SQL Express) pushes the items to their final resting place.
