• Hobbyist transitioning to earn money on paid work?

  I got into hobbyist Python programming some years ago on a whim, having never programmed before other than BASIC way back when, and little by little have cobbled together a, in my opinion, nice little desktop application that I might try to get out there in some fashion someday. It's roughly 15,000 logical lines of code, and includes use of Python, wxPython, SQLite, and a number of other libraries, works on Win and Linux (maybe Mac, untested) and I've gotten some good feedback about the application's virtues from non-programmer friends. I've also done a small application for data collection for animal behavior experiments, and an ad hoc tool to help generate a web page...and I've authored some tutorials. I consider my Python skills to be appreciably limited, my SQL skills to be very limited, but I'm not totally out to sea, either (e.g. I did FizzBuzz in a few minutes, did a "Monty Hall Dilemma" simulator in some minutes, etc.). I also put a strong premium on quality user experience; that is, the look and feel matters much to me and the software looks quite good, I feel. I know no other programming languages yet. I also know the basics of HTML/CSS (not considering them programming languages) and have created an artist's web page (that was described by a friend as "incredibly slick"...it's really not, though), and have a scientific background. I'm curious: Aside from directly selling my software, what's roughly possible--if anything--in terms of earning either side money on gigs, or actually getting hired at some level in the software industry, for someone with this general skill set?

• What is a good Foxit reader equivalent (or other PDF editor)?

  On Windows, I have found Foxit Reader to be quite handy when I need to highlight texts in PDF document, make annotations, etc. etc. Unfortunately, I have not yet found product as user friendly (which also does not corrupt PDF files...) and full-featured as Foxit software... Any recommendations? ** UPDATE ** I just tried the Open Office PDF import extension. It seems to work ok... If anyone used it for a while, I'd appreciate your feedback on that one. Thanks! ** UPDATE ** You can't highlight text with OpenOffice's PDF extension. Doesn't matter, I was reading this thread and found out about Xournal . As it turns out, it's in the repository. It does not natively save in PDF, but once all edits are done, the document can be exported to PDF (and overwrite the old one, just like Gimp with the native .XCE format and original PNG file, for example) I realize that this question is no longer a question in itself, but could be migrated to community wiki. However, feedbacks are still welcome! ** EDIT ** So... to close up this question, I have to say that I adopted Xournal . It is light and works pretty well, even on multi-page PDF documents. • Is it appropriate to run a complex enterprise-system configuration and migration project in a similar way to a Scrum development project?

  I'm just starting out on the implementation of a large enterprise-wide system, which has complex requirements and many stakeholders. The company has been through high-level evaluation and tender process and determined to purchase a highly configurable "off-the-shelf" product rather than building an entirely bespoke system. The system will replace several existing systems and will require a significant amount of data migration. I'm thinking that the implementation of this system (which is expected to take over 2 years) could be run in a similar way to a Scrum software development project. With the first sprints targeted at building the minimal possible functionality needed (across all functional areas), and then iteratively deepening the level of functionality according the stakeholder feedback. I think this will de-risk the project and help ensure a balance of stakeholder needs within the available time. The user stories are still the same, it's just that to implement them we have work within the constraints of the pre-purchased system. When it comes to 'building stuff', instead of writing custom code the team will be configuring the off-the-shelf package, writing data conversion scripts and the like (and it should be a lot quicker!). Does this sound like a sensible approach? Does the Agile approach makes sense here?

• Weird bug in Visual Studio 11 Beta when running on Windows 8

  With the Windows 8 Consumer Preview version out in the open and the Visual Studio 11 Beta also available, I’ve been putting some more effort into trying them both out. The first impression of the new Visual Studio 11 build was: Why doesn’t it work at all on Windows 8?! The issues I encountered were odd to say the least. Visual Studio did install correctly, which was a good sign, but when I started it, I was greeted with a multitude of popups each telling me that some package could not be loaded. So I clicked away for quite some time to finally be greeted by the new default visual style of Visual Studio. The next thing I wanted to do was start a new project so I pressed “New Project” and got the “Microsoft.VisualStudio.Dialogs.DialogInitializationException” exception. After some pondering and even submitting a bug report I found another already reported bug “http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/727578/vs-do-not-work-with-finnish-number-format-on-w8-64-bit”. It turns out that the dialog initialization failure has something to do with the packages no being loaded and following the presented workaround helped. The trick is to change the negative number sign to “-“ (U+002D) from the additional settings of your regional settings. This issue appears to have a wider reach than just Visual Studio as I heard at TechDays Finland 2012 that the same fix has to be made when using Hyper-V.

• If I send an IPA over TestFlight, can it be used to deploy to the app store?

  I am currently working for a small startup. I was previously under contract, now I am working for equity (no pay). The thing is, there is not yet a signed agreement in place as the details are being worked out. I may finish development before the contract is ready. I'm not currently under any contract or agreement, so the other party doesn't have any legal claim (that I know of) to the code I'm writing now, other than NDA (which just precludes me from cutting him out and releasing on my own). He already has the old code that I wrote under contract. I've made it clear to the other party that I won't submit the app or turn over the code until there's something signed to protect my interests. I've stopped pushing commits to the company repo (I'm now the only developer actively working on the project). However, I would still like to send builds over TestFlight for feedback and testing purposes. The other party has access to the developer portal and iTunes Connect for code signing, etc. Things are amicable and I don't foresee getting burnt on this, but I'm not going to put myself in that position. My concern is that if I send a finished build via TestFlight, it could be extracted and submitted to the app store without my participation. They wouldn't have the source for future maintenance and updates, of course, but it could be reverse-engineered by another developer later working from the old code base. Is this technically feasible at all? If so, is there a way I can send builds for testing while protecting my interests?

• How can we best petition to bring Adobe creative software to Ubuntu?

  Now I know its not as simple as asking for Adobe to support their design software on Ubuntu, but is there a way for the community and Canonical to make known to Adobe the rapidly growing amount of Linux users, and their desire for this great set of tools OFFICIALLY? I know that many of the answers I receive might be of the fashion "Its not going to happen", "use the free tools provided" or "Who knows it might happen in the near future", but this IS not what I am looking for. I have noticed, on sites like www.OmgUbuntu.com, there are links to pages where people can "like" the idea. Is there a way to try and get the whole community on board with this one, even Canonical, and as stated above, put forward this proposal to Adobe. The current requests for an Adobe CS, for Linux, are in dribs and drabs scattered all of the internet. Now is the best time to come up with productive solutions on how we can best gather statistics on the amount of people willing to buy the Adobe CS. These are the words of an Adobe employee: "I have forwarded this feedback on to the appropriate team who will consider it for future releases of Adobe software." The larger amount of people we have unified in the ONE community proposal, the greater chance we have of getting the software. How can we make this happen?

• One good reason for a rewrite

  I have a personal web project I cut my teeth on learning how to program. I wrote it in PHP and learned as I went. I eventually I re-factored it to use MVC and removed all mixing of php/html. Right now it has no users, save myself, and it makes no money. I have a strong desire to rewrite the entire app. Which really isn't that large of an app. I have a lot of reasons why I should not rewrite it. I know that I should move forward. It's a working app now and it will only set me back to rewrite it. But I can't shake this feeling that I would be better off using a different programming language in the long run. That I'd enjoy it more. That I'd feel comfortable with it. I feel like my one good reason to rewrite my app is that I have a gut feeling that I should. PHP seems like a hack thrown together. I want to use a language that feels more elegant to me. Any feedback you have would be welcome.

Pull Request Conversations Previously, the only way for project members and users who submitted pull requests to converse was via e-mail. This complicated the review process and made conversations isolated and difficult to track. For this release, we’ve added functionality that enables you to have those same conversations within the pull request page. When you view a pull request, you’ll now see “Comments” and “Changes” tabs, with current comments displayed. Inline Diff Enhancements We tweaked the inline diff experience to make it easier to traverse diff blocks. When you open up the inline diff experience, you’ll now see up and down arrows. To move between the diff blocks, you can use those arrows or utilize the available keyboard shortcuts. Lastly, we have also brought the inline diff experience to the source control changes page for project and fork changesets. • How can I define custom keyboard mappings to resize, move, and manage windows?

  I just returned to ubuntu (13.04) after a year using OS X exclusively. I love the improvements that have come to ubuntu and unity, and I'm glad to be back. There's just one thing, though... Slate is a simple OS X tool that allows users to quickly create powerful keyboard macros and really take advantage of their screen space. I have to say I was spoiled by it. Even on a tiny laptop, my workflow was never interrupted by changing workspaces or leaving the keyboard to adjust a window, because perfect adjustment was a keystroke or two away. For example: bind h:ctrl;alt;cmd resize -10% +0 # this increases the window's left width by 10% bind h:shift;alt nudge -10% +0 # this moves the window left by 10% You make a big config file, and like vim, tmux, and everything else, it just becomes muscle memory. I can't seem to find a way to achieve anything close to this in linux or ubuntu. I've tried to make do with compiz window settings and the built-in stuff Ubuntu offers, but it's not even in the same realm. Although to be fair, this level of tuning isn't something most people care about. Thanks, guys. :) Any feedback would be appreciated.

  I am developing a back link tool for Chinese SEO (our web site URL is: http://link.aizhan.com just like ahrefs.com. I encountered a problem which is how to handle multiple pages of the same site with the same out links. For example: Most pages of bbs.chinaz.com have the same out links such as: bbs.chinaz.com/Tea/thread-6293993-1-1.html bbs.chinaz.com/Tea/list-1.html bbs.chinaz.com/alimama/thread-6265032-1-1.html bbs.chinaz.com/alimama/thread-6265032-2-1.html?userid=-1&extParms= bbs.chinaz.com/Shuiba/list-1.html bbs.chinaz.com/FeedBack/thread-4456753-1-1.html etc.. All of the pages have the same out links in the top of the page: www.cnzz.com(anchor text:????) www.313.com(????) www.idc123.com(????) Suppose I store these outlinks into database. The SEO will find there are six backlinks from bbs.chinaz.com of www.cnzz.com. This is obviously no sense for the SEO. Can you tell me how do you deal with this problem?

• How to implement Restricted access to application features

  I'm currently developing a web application, that provides some 'service' to the user. The user will have to select a 'plan' according to which she/he will be allowed to perform application specific actions but up to a limit defined by the plan. A Plan will also limit access to certain features, which will not be available at all for some plans. As an example : say there are 3 plans, 2 actions throughout the application users in plan-1 can perform action-1 3 times, and they can't perform action-2 at all users in plan-2 can perform action-1 10 times, action-2 5 times users in plan-3 can perform action-1 20 times, action-2 10 times So i'm looking for the best way to get this done, and my main concerns besides implementing it, are the following(in no particular order) maintainability/changeability : the number of plans, and type of features/actions will change in the final product industry standard/best practice : for future readiness!! efficiency : ofcourse, i want fast code!! I have never done anything like this before, so i have no clue about how do i go about implementing these functionalities. Any tips/guides/patterns/resources/examples? I did read a little about ACL, RBAC, are they the patterns that i need to follow? Really any sort of feedback will help.

• Help deciding on language for a complex desktop - web application

  I'm about to start working on a fairly complex project needing a desktop GUI as well as a web interface and I need to decide on a language(s) to use. This is from an electrical engineering/robotics background. These are the requirements: Program will have to read data from multiple sensors and inputs (motion sensor, temperature sensor, capacitive sensor, infrared, magnetic sensors, etc) through a port on a computer - so either through USB or ethernet. Program will have to be able to send control signals based on this input. Program will have to continuously monitor all input signals at all times - so realtime data. Program will require authentication. Program will need to be controllable from a web interface from anywhere via logging in to a website. Web interface will also need to have realtime feedback once authenticated. What language do you think would best accomplish this? I was thinking maybe saving everything into a database which can be accessed by both the desktop and web app? And would Python be able to do all of this? Or something like a remote desktop app? I know this is a complex project but let's assume I can learn any language. Has anyone done something like this and if so how did you accomplish it?

• Do I expect too much work from an employer? [closed]

  I recently switched jobs because I was not challenged enough, the work would come in waves, and I HATED the people I worked with. I am a recent college grad, May 2009, and based off the 3 internships I had, and 2 full time jobs I obtained, I am finding that employers can not keep me satisfied with the amount of work. At my new job, I like the people I work with, I am challenged, but I still do not get enough work. I hate down time. I always want to have something to work on AT LEAST 6 out of the 8 hours. I was surprised that my new employer actually hired me because the majority of the technologies they implement, I had minimal exposure to. I never programmed in the technologies they use outside of one class in college. My greatest strength is that I am an extremely fast learner. I can pick up new technologies with relative ease. They gave me a project to work on by myself and I think they assumed it would take me longer to complete. Now that I finished that app, they are struggling to find something for me to do. I am not sure if it is bad timing being close to the holidays, my manager dealing with personal issues at home, how quickly I finished the first project, or that I expect too much out of an employer? If so, what are good things to do on all this downtime?! EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback! EDIT 2: I am going to "unaccept" the answer in an effort to keep the question open. As a few people have mentioned, this is a great discussion on how to grow as a new worker in the programming field. • Is The Ease Of Windows Phone Development Ruining Its Image

  I was reading an article on Mashable recently by a long time iPhone user who is living solely on a Lumia 920 at the moment and giving her assessment.  One thing that struck a nerve with me was her describing the Windows Phone ecosystem as immature.  She wasn’t saying this because of the number of apps or the big names like most people do.  She means the quality of the apps in the store. This hit a nerve with me.  I find it hard to believe that the majority of app on iOS are of any higher quality than any other platform.  I believe in any ecosystem you are going to find some high end, high quality apps, but the majority by default will be from people who are trying to solve a problem but do not have the resources to have top graphics and full blown testing.  There will also be a large number that are just there trying to trick you into giving up some cash. Does any of the mean that we shouldn’t take notice of this complaint?  Of course not!  We should always strive to publish the best quality apps possible.  Don’t do things like leaving default app icons and backgrounds.  Put a little effort into your design.  You should also spend as much time as possible ensuring against crashes and giving the user the best experience possible.  Think through your apps organization and navigation.  Go the extra step of putting it into beta and letting select people use it and give you feedback before going to full release. • Suggestion: ALLFILES option for RESTORE

  The default action when performing a backup is to append to the backup file yet the default action when restoring a backup is to restore just the first file.I constantly come across customer situations where they are puzzled that they seem to have lost data after they have completed a restore. Invariably, it's just that they haven't restored all the backups contained within a single OS file. This happens most commonly with log backups but also happens when they have not restored the most recent database backup file.It is not trivial to achieve this within simple T-SQL scripts, when the number of backup files within the OS file is unknown. It really should be.I'd like to see a FILES=ALLFILES option on the RESTORE command. For RESTORE DATABASE, it should restore the most recent database backup plus any subsequent log files. • Are small amounts of functional programming understandable by non-FP people?

  Case: I'm working at a company, writing an application in Python that is handling a lot of data in arrays. I'm the only developer of this program at the moment, but it will probably be used/modified/extended in the future (1-3 years) by some other programmer, at this moment unknown to me. I will probably not be there directly to help then, but maybe give some support via email if I have time for it. So, as a developer who has learned functional programming (Haskell), I tend to solve, for example, filtering like this: filtered = filter(lambda item: included(item.time, dur), measures) The rest of the code is OO, it's just some small cases where I want to solve it like this, because it is much simpler and more beautiful according to me. Question: Is it OK today to write code like this? How does a developer that hasn't written/learned FP react to code like this? Is it readable? Modifiable? Should I write documentation like explaining to a child what the line does? # Filter out the items from measures for which included(item.time, dur) != True I have asked my boss, and he just says "FP is black magic, but if it works and is the most efficient solution, then it's OK to use it." What is your opinion on this? As a non-FP programmer, how do you react to the code? Is the code "googable" so you can understand what it does? I would love feedback on this :) Edit: I marked phant0m's post as answer, because he gives good advice on how to write the code in a more readable way, and still keep the advantages. But I would also like to recommend superM's post because of his viewpoint as a non-FP programmer.

  After many months of deliberating I have finally gotten around to starting this blog! The reason for doing this is the large number of half finished articles lying around on my hard disk, unpublished and unloved. These articles have been of huge benefit to me, and have been written in an attempt to consolidate my own thinking, in order to help me structure my thoughts and ideas as I have tried to digest new ideas and understand abstract theories. It is my hope that by tidying up these articles and publishing them here that I can continue this learning process by getting feedback on the ideas from within the developer community. i have worked with .NET for 8 years now, and have worked with ASP.NET, SQL Server, Windows programming as well as general network administration. Since 2004 my focus has been on integration, web services, and more often than not Biztalk Server. The last two years have seen me focus on SOA and WCF, and the Managed Services Engine, so this is probably where the main focus of the blog will to start with, but there are so many fun things to play with these days that i have no idea where it will end up.....   Barry

• What to do if you find a vulnerability in a competitor's site?

  While working on a project for my company, I needed to build functionality that allows users to import/export data to/from our competitor's site. While doing this, I discovered a very serious security exploit that could, in short, perform any script on the competitor's website. My natural feeling is to report the issue to them in the spirit of good-will. Exploiting the issue to gain advantage crossed my mind, but I don't want to go down that path. So my question is, would you report a serious vulnerability to your direct competition, in order to help them? Or would you keep your mouth shut? Is there a better way of going about this, perhaps to gain at least some advantage from the fact that I'm helping them by reporting the issue? Update (Clarification): Thanks for all your feedback so far, I appreciate it. Would your answers change if I were to add that the competition in question is a behemoth in the market (hundreds of employees in several continents), and my company only started a few weeks ago (three employees)? It goes without saying, they most definitely will not remember us, and if anything, only realize that their site needs work (which is why we entered this market in the first place). I confess this is one of those moral vs. business toss-ups, but I appreciate all the advice.

They Listened to Feedback while Keeping to their Plans I am one of the people in the “bring back the start menu” camp. I want my start menu. I *like* my start menu. Microsoft heard that and put it back, fantastic. But they implemented it in a way that still pushes the Windows 8 UI – and I’m actually pretty happy with it. When you hit the Start menu, you get the live-tiles displayed overlaying the desktop. But you can also swipe from the bottom to get the “all-applications” view. This, in essense, is really what those that like the Start Menu want. I believe it was mentioned that you can configure the all-applications view to be the default. They’re Committed to Improving Windows 8 The commitment to rapid deployments Ballmer talked about is crucial to Windows 8’s success. They need to keep it evolving quickly to maintain the interest of users and developers. I think the little improvements they showed are excellent (hands-free mode, multi window docking, better multi-monitor support, new developer controls, etc.). Hardware Vendors are Committed to Windows 8 They showed off a number of new hardware products (Windows 8 and Windows Phone). The Surface’s introduction to the market has done nothing to dissuade their hardware partners. Bing as a Platform is Huge for Developers!!! This was the biggest take-away from the keynote! • Choosing the Database Solution for Large Data Application

  I have been tasked to write an application that will be a combination of document and inventory management in VB.net which will be used to store document images in TIFF, PDF, XPS, TXT, DOC, PPT and so on as binary data that can be retrieved for viewing, printing, and possible OCR to be searchable as well along with meta data such as sender, recipient, type of document, date, source, etc. So the table would probably be something like: DOC_NAME, DOC_DATE, NOTES, ... DOC_BINARY (where the actual document will be put inside) What my concern is finding a database solution that will not become unstable due to size restrictions, records limitations and performance. Some of the options are MS_SQL, SQL Express, SQLite, mySQL, and Access. Now I can pretty much eliminate Access right off the bat as it is just too limiting and not scalable. I can further eliminate SQL Express because of the 2 GB limit and again scalability. So that leaves me with MS_SQL, SQLite and mySQL (although if anyone has other options they think would be good as well, please feel free to share them, by no means am I set on these only). So this brings me to what you guys think is the best option for what I have described. The goal is that the data is all in one place (a single file) that will make backup and portability easier. For small volume usage, pretty much any solution will hold for a while, but my goal is to think ahead and make sure its able to withstand heavy large volume usage as well. Another consideration is also the interoperability with .NET and stability of such code to avoid errors and memory leaks. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

• Community TFS Build Manager available for Visual Studio 2012 RC

  I finally got around to push out a version of the Community TFS Build Manager that is compatible with Visual Studio 2012 RC. Unfortunately I had to do this as a separate extension, it references different versions of the TFS assemblies and also some properties and methods that the 2010 version uses are now obsolete in the TFS 2012 API. To download it, just open the Extension Manager, select Online and search for TFS Build:   You can also download it from this link: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/cfdb84b4-285e-4eeb-9fa9-dad9bfe2cd10 The functionality is identical to the 2010 version, the only difference is that you can’t start it from the Team Explorer Builds node (since the TE has been completely rewritten and the extension API’s are not yet published). So, to start it you must use the Tools menu: We will continue shipping updates to both versions in the future, as long as it functionality that is compatible with both TFS 2010 and TFS 2012. You might also note that the color scheme used for the build manager doesn’t look as good with the VS2012 theme….   Hope you will enjoy the tool in Visual Studio 2012 as well. Follow us on Twitter @matthawley and @codeplex] We deployed a new version of the CodePlex website yesterday.  Redesigned Home Page with Activity Stream In CodePlex we continuously look for ways to provide our users with the most recent and relevant information they are seeking. It is with this in mind that we released our latest feature, the home page activity stream. The activity stream showcases events taking place on projects you are a part of as well as projects you are following. There are many different events in the system that causes activities to be created, including starting a discussion, creating a work item etc.   All the functionality that was available on the former home page, such as creating a new project or finding a project that needs help, is available on the right side of the new home page.     The CodePlex team values your feedback. We are frequently monitoring Twitter, our Discussions, and Issue Tracker.
