I am a student of computer science and am interested in learning development of RIAs. So which among silverlight and flex is more suitable for me and y?
I'm trying to explain to non-computer science major student with many questions.
(1)What traverses tree? Is it just logic or actual on off switch generates 1s and 0s traveling the circuit board? where is this tree and node exists CPU/Memory in between?
(2)If it is 1s and 0s HOW the circuits understand the line for example p=p.getLeft();
I said search the google or wiki.
I am in second year computer science program. This summer I am starting a quality database developer position at RIM for 8 months.
My goal is to work as a software developer (architect or consultant eventually) at Google. After this 8 months, I am still going to do 12 months of co-op. In which direction should I be trying to steer my career in? Is there any certain positions (other than software developer) or companies I should work for?
Hello everyone,
Im looking for a simple bit of code that will let me add the following html into my zend form:
<div id="wmd-button-bar" class="wmd-panel"></div>
Thats it, it needs to be above my 'method' element in the form but thats it. For such a simple action I cant find any methods that don't involve me learning rocket science (i.e Zend Decorators).
i went to a prestigeous software conference (as dominant in its own field as MS in general), one main speaker is a professor of computer science who has been teaching Java for 20 years. During question session, he seems never heard of Groovy or Scala....
He is from a decent University in US...
Is Groovy or Scala too new to attract academic attention or is this professor abnormal?
thanks.
This off-topic item refers to people with major achievements in fields such as engineering, science, and mathematics. Here's my picks:
Eric Drexler for his work on molecular nanotech. His book, Engines of Creations, is mind-blowing.
Robert Freitas for his work on molecular nanotech. The breadth of his multi-volume book, Nanomedicine, is impressive.
Richard Stallman for promoting Free Software.
Hello all, I am not a comp science guy. Managed resources are allocated on the heap. But I would like to know where unmanaged resources are allocated. If unmanaged resources are also allocated on the heap, is it the same heap used by managed resources or a different one?
Thanks in advance.

i have question how good is this book?
http://www.amazon.com/Concrete-Mathematics-Foundation-Computer-Science/dp/0201558025/
?
and can anybody advise good books about bit manipulations?
for example how good is this book?

How difficult would completing a masters in computer engineering without having an undergraduate engineering degree. Top program vs. middle of road make a difference?

I'm currently pursuing my BS in Computer Science and my school offers specializations based upon taking certain advanced electives. I was thinking about getting two of them since they are sort of on the way to my degree anyway. They are Software Engineering and Programming Languages and Compilers .
Would these specializations actually be useful in finding a job? Would employers even care about them?
Hello,
I am a Computer Science student and working on a project based on Nutch search engine, I want to develop the Java algorithms to better index and search Arabic websites?. Which part of the programming code should I optimize for this purpose, any idea?
thanks in advance

I apologize as I don't know whether this is more of a math question that belongs on mathoverflow or if it's a computer science question that belongs here.
That said, I believe I understand the fundamental difference between data, information, and knowledge. My understanding is that information carries both data and meaning. One thing that I'm not clear on is whether information is data. Is information considered a special kind of data, or is it something completely different?
How do you choose your colour schemes for your applications and/or web designs?
Is it a gut instinct thing or can logic be applied here too? I have looked at some colour theory but my combinations seemed wrong.
I am looking at a monochrome webpage. Rather than pluck colours out of the air as usual I would like to see if there is a science behind this. Links and opinions welcome.
besides Wingdings of course.
I'm not talking programming font, but for design docs, documentation, web pages etc..
What wins??? Times New Roman 10pt, Arial 12pt, Verdana? Anyone have any science to that opinion you are about to post?
I'm a computer science student, and I'm just starting to write relatively larger programs for my coursework (between 750 - 1500 lines). Up until now, it's been possible to get by with any reasonable level of modularization and object oriented design. However, now that I'm writing more complex code for my assignments I'd like to learn to write better code.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some resources for learning about what sort of things to look for when designing your program's architecture so that you can make it as modularized as possible?
Hello,
I am studying natural deduction as a part of my Formal Specification & Verification Computer Science course at University/College.
I find it interesting, however I learn much better when I can find a practical use for things.
Could anyone explain to me if and how natural deduction is used other than for formally verifying bits of code?
Thanks!
What's the deal with iPhone's GPS? I never get a good reading when i'm in my office building, or in my room. What really ticks it! and what doesn't? Please help me understand the assisted GPS science.
here's a definition of marshaling from Wikipedia:
In computer science, marshalling
(similar to serialization) is the
process of transforming the memory
representation of an object to a data
format suitable for storage or
transmission. It is typically used
when data must be moved between
different parts of a computer program
or from one program to another.
I have always done data serialization in php via its serialize function, usually on objects or arrays. But how is wikipedia's definition of marshaling/serialization takes place in this serizalize() function?
The question posed came about during a 2nd Year Comp Science lecture while discussing the impossibility of generating numbers in a deterministic computational device.
This was the only suggestion which didn't depend on non-commodity-class hardware.
Subsequently nobody would put their reputation on the line to argue definitively for or against it.
Anyone care to make a stand for or against. If so, how about a mention as to a possible implementation?
When I print an ActiveRecord of a Department, I get:
Department:0x210ec4c {
:id = 3,
:name = "Computer Science",
...
:school_id = 3
}
How can I make it give me the School instead of the School_ID? In other words, call to_s on the school found by the school_id. Just like how when I have a Department d, I can say
d.school
Right after I finished my project for my Computer Science class, I hit save and the computer froze.
When i came back, the cpp file wouldn't open through visual studio, I have the exe and object files. Please tell me I can get my source code back :(
EDIT: the .cpp file is blank, and i wasn't prompted for recovery when starting visual studio again. I already checked /documents/visualstudio/backup, nothing is there.
In an age where experience seems to be paramount, does anyone still see great value in having a college (specifically Computer Science) degree? Would those three years be better spent working in a top-shelf software company?
I am graguating in dis may in electrical engg...but i would like to learn any one of the data ware housing tools....can any one please suggest me which is the best data ware housing tool for non-computer science graduates...so that it is easy to learn...and can get job...
like (business objects, informatica, hyperion, datastage and cognos)?
Which of one is more important to a career: Certifications like Java, Oracle and Linux or a Master Degree on computer science?
I know that if I go to the academic area the Master Degree would be better, but a Master Degree will be valued by my company too. Both are good for the curriculum. So, what is more important?
Hi,
most online questionnaires today are in the form of several questions on a page and the user submits all the answers at once. The application I'm writing at the moment sends questions one at a time and receives the answers as soon as they are given.
How can I describe this characteristic? I feel I'm missing a computer science term.
Thanks.
