• Easiest way to find the correct kademlia bucket

- by Martin
In the Kademlia protocol node IDs are 160 bit numbers. Nodes are stored in buckets, bucket 0 stores all the nodes which have the same ID as this node except for the very last bit, bucket 1 stores all the nodes which have the same ID as this node except for the last 2 bits, and so on for all 160 buckets. What's the fastest way to find which bucket I should put a new node into? I have my buckets simply stored in an array, and need a method like so: Bucket[] buckets; //array with 160 items public Bucket GetBucket(Int160 myId, Int160 otherId) { //some stuff goes here } The obvious approach is to work down from the most significant bit, comparing bit by bit until I find a difference, I'm hoping there is a better approach based around clever bit twiddling. Practical note: My Int160 is stored in a byte array with 20 items, solutions which work well with that kind of structure will be preferred.

• Display DateTime in GridView using user's time

- by Rachel Martin
I have a DateTime stored in UTC time that I'd like to display to the user in their local time from within a GridView control. How can I convert my DateTime to the user's time (not my server's local time)? Here is my current field as it appears in the GridView Columns collection: <asp:BoundField DataField="RunTime" HeaderText="Run Time" SortExpression="RunTime" DataFormatString="{0:f}" />

• Safari Extension - How to respond to Settings changes?

- by Martin Marlow
Hi, I'm currently working on an Extension for Safari 5 and I want to run a listener function whenever Settings changes are made. Apple provides an example for that, but it doesn't work for me. I currently have this listener function in my global html file: function numberChanged() { if(event.key == "number") alert("Number has changed!"); } safari.self.addEventListener("change", numberChanged, false); I hope somebody can help me. Does somebody know what I'm doing wrong?

• GUI-Library for microcontroller

- by Martin Kirsche
I want to create a GUI driven application for a micro-controller (Atmel XMEGA) that is connected to a 128x64 dots graphics LCD (EA DOGL128-6) and 4 buttons for navigation. Controlling the display itself (e.g. drawing pixels and characters) is no problem but in order to prevent me from reinventing the wheel I was googling for a GUI-Library/-Toolkit that is written in c, includes its source code, will run on a 32 MHz 8-bit micro-controller and provides at least the following controls: panel (to group elements) menu (scrollable) icon label button line-graph (optional) But I didn't find any thing useful. Does anyone know (or better uses) such a library(preferably for free)?

• Debugging a release version of a DLL (with PDB file)

- by Martin
If I have a DLL (that was built in release-mode) and the corresponding PDB file, is it possible to debug (step-into) classes/methods contained in that DLL? If so, what are the required steps/configuration (e.g. where to put the PDB file)? Edit: If have the PDB file in the same place as the DLL (in the bin/debug directory of a simple console test application). I can see that the symbols for the DLL are loaded (in the Output window and also in the Modules window), but still I cannot step into the methods of that DLL. Could this be the result of compiler optimizations (as described by Michael in his answer)?

• Packaging one or two plugins as a standalone RCP application?

- by Martin Cowie
I have a handful of Eclipse plugins that I maintain. They are proving useful enough that non Eclipse users have asked for them without the overhead of a full eclipse install. I am certain this is possible, but uncertain how to make this possible. My attempts at creating a standalone RCP app and then including my plugins as dependencies have given me mixed results. More specifically, my perspective tries to instantiate a view from a plugin and fails (silently)... public void createInitialLayout(IPageLayout layout) { layout.addStandaloneView( "myPlugin.ID", false, IPageLayout.LEFT, 0.25f, editorArea); } ... but as the same plugin implements a search extension, it does show up in the standard Eclipse search dialog. Are there any resources that hardened Eclipse tars can point me to, that will help overcome this hurdle? M.

• Show duplicates in Mathematica

- by Martin Janiczek
In Mathematica I have a list: x = {1,2,3,3,4,5,5,6} How will I make a list with the duplicates? Like: {3,5} I have been looking at Lists as Sets, if there is something like Except[] for lists, so I could do: unique = Union[x] duplicates = MyExcept[x,unique] (Of course, if the x would have more than two duplicates - say, {1,2,2,2,3,4,4}, there the output would be {2,2,4}, but additional Union[] would solve this.) But there wasn't anything like that (if I did understand all the functions there well). So, how to do that?

• Is this a dangerous locking pattern?

- by Martin
I have an enumerator written in C#, which looks something like this: try { ReadWriteLock.EnterReadLock(); yield foo; yield bar; yield bash; } finally { ReadWriteLock.ExitReadLock(); } I believe this may be a dangerous locking pattern, as the ReadWriteLock will only be released if the enumeration is complete, otherwise the lock is left hanging and is never released, am I correct? If so, what's the best way to combat this?

• getting detailed information about structured exceptions

- by Martin
My Visual C++ application is compiled with /EHA option, letting me catch structured exceptions (division by zero, access violation, etc). I then translate those exceptions to my own exception class using _set_se_translator(). My goal is to improve our logging of those types of exceptions. I can get the type of exception from the EXCEPTION_RECORD structure, and the exception address. I would like to be able to gather more information, like the source file/location where the exception is thrown, the call stack, etc. Is that possible? I do create an exception minidump on structured exceptions - is there a tool to automatically get the call stack from that?

• Detecting that the stack is full in C/C++

- by Martin Kristiansen
When writing C++ code I've learned that using the stack to store memory is a good idea. But recently I ran into a problem: I had an experiment that had code that looked like this: void fun(unsigned int N) { float data_1[N*N]; float data_2[N*N]; /* Do magic */ } The code exploted with a seqmentation fault at random, and I had no idea why. It turned out that problem was that I was trying to store things that were to big on my stack, is there a way of detecting this? Or at least detecting that it has gone wrong?

• Does acts-as-taggable-on work on heroku?

- by Martin
Hello, I have a question: does the acts-as-taggable-on gem work on Heroku? I'been trying but it doesn't seem to work. In my development machine works okay. I'm wondering if it's maybe because Heroku uses PostgreSQL and my local env SQLite and for some reason postgresql is not supported by the special tagging "magic"? I couldn't find any related info to this, so I would like to know other experiences with this. I guess is pretty rare since both the gem and heroku are very popular. ActionView::Template::Error (undefined method `interests' for "#<About:0x2b35d6125728>":About): <% unless @user.about.interests.empty? %>
interests and passions
<% @user.about.interests.each do |tag| %> <%= tag %>, <% end -%>
<% end %> In my about.rb model i have acts_as_taggable_on :interests, :music, :movies, :books, :tvs Thank you in advance!

• When the Microsoft's main support phase for .NET 2.0, .NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5 ends?

- by Martin Vobr from Rebex
Hello, I'm wondering until when the .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 will be supported by Microsoft. According to Microsoft Support Lifetime page for developers products the mainstream support phase should last for 5 years and extended support phase for another 5 years. I've found a .NET Framework 2.0 entry in the Support Lifetime Index , however I was unable to find any entry for .NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5 there (or .NET 4.0). According to the .NET framework 2.0 entry mainstream support phase for .NET 2.0 will end at 4/12/2011. I have two questions: Considering that .NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5 depends on .NET 2.0 CLR does it means that mainstream support for .NET 3.x will also end in 4/12/2011? If it's not true what is the end of mainstream support for .NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5?

• Capturing a NSParseErrorException

- by Martin
Could someone tell me how I can capture a NSParseErrorException? The Situation: my app downloads a small .plist file. I convert this into dictionary using the string method -propertylist. This normally works fine. I check for a connection before going to retrieve the file, so it works fine if I've got a connection to the internet, and works fine when I don't. However, I discovered a use case that crashes. If I'm at location that requires authetication before connecting to the internet (at Starbucks, say) what's being returned by the app isn't a plist and the attempt to parse it causes the application to crash. So is there a way to transform my code so that the NSParseErrorException is caught and rather than crashing the program I can just skip over this piece of code? NSDictionary *temp = [myDownloadString propertyList]; I tried doing this if ([myDownloadString propertyList]==NSParseErrorException){ //do something } but that didn't work.

• Is the RESTORE process dependent on schema?

- by Martin Aatmaa
Let's say I have two database instances: InstanceA - Production server InstanceB - Test server My workflow is to deploy new schema changes to InstanceB first, test them, and then deploy them to InstanceA. So, at any one time, the instance schema relationship looks like this: InstanceA - Schema Version 1.5 InstanceB - Schema Version 1.6 (new version being tested) An additional part of my workflow is to keep the data in InstanceB as fresh as possible. To fulfill this, I am taking the database backups of InstanceA and applying them (restoring them) to InstanceB. My question is, how does schema version affect the restoral process? I know I can do this: Backup InstanceA - Schema Version 1.5 Restore to InstanceB - Schema Version 1.5 But can I do this? Backup InstanceA - Schema Version 1.5 Restore to InstanceB - Schema Version 1.6 (new version being tested) If no, what would the failure look like? If yes, would the type of schema change matter? For example, if Schema Version 1.6 differed from Schema Version 1.5 by just having an altered storec proc, I imagine that this type of schema change should't affect the restoral process. On the other hand, if Schema Version 1.6 differed from Schema Version 1.5 by having a different table definition (say, an additional column), I image this would affect the restoral process. I hope I've made this clear enough. Thanks in advance for any input!

• XPages Extension Library - onShow event for xe:djxmHeading

- by Martin Perrie
I am trying to add an onShow event to a Mobile Page Heading as per p. 326 oF the XPages Extension Library book. My code is as follows :- <xe:djxmHeading id="djxmHeading1" back="All Areas" moveTo="byArea"> <xe:this.label>#{javascript:param.get("Rep")}</xe:this.label> <xp:this.onShow> #{javascript:sessionScope.put("RepName", param.get("Rep"))} </xp:this.onShow> </xe:djxmHeading> which looks similar to the example in the book. But I'm getting the following error: Unknown property this.onShow. It is not defined on tag xe:djxmHeading. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks

• compare function for upper_bound / lower_bound

- by Martin Beckett
I want to find the first item in a sorted vector that has a field less than some value x. I need to supply a compare function that compares 'x' with the internal value in MyClass but I can't work out the function declaration. Can't I simply overload '<' but how do I do this when the args are '&MyClass' and 'float' ? float x; std::vector< MyClass >::iterator last = std::upper_bound(myClass.begin(),myClass.end(),x);

• Resources how to architect a iPhone application?

- by Frank Martin
What resources can you recommend for learning how to architect a iPhone application? Background of the question is that most of the resources explain the usage of a single class or concept (and i appreciate that a lot to learn something about the specific topic) but as far as i can see they lack unfortunately to describe how to put things together for typical real world applications.

• Is Win32_PerfFormattedData_PerfDisk_PhysicalDisk missing from WMI in Vista?

- by Martin
From what I understand, the following script should work in Windows XP and higher, but it doesn't work for me in Vista Business 32-bit Service Pack 2. Thus far I have been very unsuccessful googling for information about this performance class. strComputer = "." Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2") Set colApps = objWMIService.ExecQuery("Select * from Win32_PerfFormattedData_PerfDisk_PhysicalDisk") For Each objApp in colApps Wscript.Echo objApp.Caption Next Does this WMI class simply not exist in Vista? If it is just me, is there a way to fix WMI? I have already tried running winmgmt /resetrepository and winmgmt /resyncperf and neither helps.

• Compiling and using NTL c++ library for Windows

- by Martin Lauridsen
Hi there, I have compiled the NTL inifite precision integer arithmetic library for c++, using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. I did as explained, on this site, using the Visual Studio interface, rather than from the command prompt. Actually I would rather do it from the command prompt, but I was not sure how to. Anyhow, I got the library compiled, and I now want to compile a program using the library, from the command prompt. The program I am trying to compile, has been tested on a linux system, where I compile it with the following c++ -I/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/NTL-5.4.2/include mpqs.cpp main.cpp -o main -L/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/NTL-5.4.2/lib -lntl -L/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/gmp-4.2.1/lib -lgmp -lm Nevermind the gmp stuff, I dont have that installed on Windows. It is purely an optional thing that will make the NTL run faster. Anyhow, this works fine on linux. Now on Windows I write the following cl /EHsc /I D:\Downloads\WinNTL-5_5_2\include mpqs.cpp main.cpp /link /LIBPATH:"D:\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\ntl\Debug" But this results in the following errors: mpqs.cpp mpqs.cpp(38) : error C2039: 'find_smooth_vals' : is not a member of 'QS' d:\desktop\qs\mpqs.h(12) : see declaration of 'QS' mpqs.cpp(41) : error C2065: 'M' : undeclared identifier mpqs.cpp(41) : error C2065: 'n' : undeclared identifier mpqs.cpp(42) : error C2065: 'sieve_table' : undeclared identifier mpqs.cpp(42) : error C2228: left of '.size' must have class/struct/union type is ''unknown-type'' mpqs.cpp(43) : error C2065: 'sieve_table' : undeclared identifier mpqs.cpp(44) : error C2065: 'qx_table' : undeclared identifier mpqs.cpp(44) : error C3861: 'test_smoothness': identifier not found mpqs.cpp(45) : error C2065: 'smooth_indices' : undeclared identifier mpqs.cpp(45) : error C2228: left of '.push_back' must have class/struct/union type is ''unknown-type'' main.cpp Generating Code... It is as if, my mpqs.h file is not included into the compilation process? Also I dont understand why it complains about .push_back() for a vector type? Help is much appreciated!
